KUALA LUMPUR: UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMW Toyota) has launched the Toyota Hilux 2.5-litre dual cabin pickup truck with Intercooler Variable Nozzle Turbo (VNT) in the D-4D common rail turbo diesel engine.

The new VNT technology replaces the conventional turbo engine and thus provides the 2.5-litre Hilux with a substantial boost in power and torque, ensuring the reliability of the fuel system without compromise.

The newest member of the Hilux family of pickup trucks (assembled locally at the company’s manufacturing facility here) now has the same turbocharger technology as found in the Toyota Hilux Double Cab 3.0G.

With the Intercooler VNT, the power of the 2.5-litre engine has now been significantly boosted from 102PS (75kW) at 3,600rpm in the previous engine to 144PS (106kW) at 3,400rpm.

The torque has also seen a sharp increase from 260Nm to 343Nm at a broader torque band of 1,600rpm to 2,800rpm; this peak torque is similar to that of the Hilux 3.0-litre engine which has an even broader torque band from 1,400rpm to 3,200rpm.

The VNT improves the engine power and torque output by optimisation of the exhaust gas pressure and flow speed into the turbine according to demand conditions such that efficiency is at peak levels at all times.

Another feature to note is the fuel cooler which lowers the temperature of the return fuel to the fuel tank, ensuring the viscosity of the fuel is not compromised and enforcing the reliability of the fuel system.

The robust four-wheel (4×4) drive has undergone ongoing improvements to ensure durability and reliability, proven traits that have made the vehicle a trusted ‘business partner’ by fleet operators in challenging driving environments.

In terms of features, the appearance of the front has been made to look more powerful and commanding with the adoption of a hood bulge space (or scoop) that is similar to the 3.0-litre variants.

This feature is also highly functional as it allows air to flow directly into the intercooler which is placed on top of the engine for maximum cooling efficiency.

According to a press statement from the company, this current Hilux model was launched in 2005 and has been the market leader in its segment, with more than 120,000 units sold.

With the introduction of the 3.0-litre Hilux in 2010, the company has reached record sales of more than 21,400 units.

The Hilux looks to be set for another record year with sales figure increasing more than 40 per cent year-on-year as at September this year.

The four variants of Hilux 2.5-litre VNT come with a three-year, 100,000km warranty. For individual private purchases, on the road prices (with insurance) in Sarawak range from RM77, 963.50 (single cab manual transmission) to RM101,532.40 (2.5G automatic transmission).
