Penn's Social Planning and Events Committee has announced the four artists performing over the first weekend of Spring Fling on April 9 and 10.

Gryffin, a DJ and music producer, and Cherub, an electro-indie duo, will perform on April 9, and pop singer-songwriter Rina Sawayama and EDM duo Louis the Child will perform on April 10. The other four artists, who will perform for the second weekend of Fling on April 16 and 17, have yet to be announced.

Gryffin released his debut studio album, "Gravity," in 2019, which featured collaborations with artists like Carly Rae Jepsen, MARINA, and Aloe Blacc.

Nashville-based group Cherub formed in 2010 and consists of two members, Jordan Kelley and Jason Huber. The group is known for its 2012 single "Doses & Mimosas."

Japanese-British singer Sawayama released her debut album, "SAWAYAMA," last year, which was listed by many publications as one of the best albums of 2020. She is known for her songs "XS" and "Commes Des Garçons (Like The Boys)."

Louis the Child formed in 2013 and released their debut album, "Here for Now," last year, which featured songs like "Little Things" featuring Quinn XCII and Chelsea Cutler.

Nursing senior and SPEC Concerts Director Shanaya Cross said that because Fling is taking place entirely online this year, SPEC was able to host EDM artists, which would have been much more difficult if the performances were in person because of the expensive production equipment required.

Cross added that in the past, Fling has never hosted more than four artists. This year, between the two weekends, Fling will host eight artists total.

“We were in a really unique position this year where, because it was virtual, we could book more artists,” she said.

Cross said that she hopes students will appreciate the number and variety of artists at Fling this year.

"We really wanted to try to appeal to as many audiences as possible," Cross said.

SPEC announced in early March that Fling would be held over two weekends for the first time, on April 9, 10, 16, and 17. After Fling was canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic, SPEC wanted to make the virtual Fling a two-weekend event “to build the hype around the concert,” College junior and SPEC Concerts Director Kayla Johnson previously told The Daily Pennsylvanian.

Cross said SPEC has not yet determined when they will announce the artists performing during the second weekend of Fling.

Tickets for both weekends are free this year, unlike in past years, but students must register for the Zoom performances by reserving a ticket. Students only need to register once to reserve their spot to view both weekends' concerts.
