AUSTIN, Texas – Four standouts in the pool and in the classroom – Indiana University’s Ching Hwee Gan, Benedict Nagy of Colorado Mesa University, Alex Turvey of Pomona Pitzer Colleges, Milligan University’s Hanne te Velthuis – highlight the 2023-24 Academic All- America® women’s swimming & diving teams selected by College Sports Communicators.
 
Hwee Gan (Division I), Nagy (Division II), Turvey (Division III) and te Velthuis (NAIA) have each been named the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for their respective divisions. For te Velthuis it is her second straight year as the NAIA Team Member of the Year. She earned the honor in 2022-23 while competing for the University of the Cumberlands and now this year at Milligan.
 

NCAA Division I

Ching Hwee Gan is a Nutrition Science major with a 4.00 GPA. The junior helped Indiana University to a program-best seventh-place finish for the second year in a row at the NCAA Division I National Championships. She repeated as a medalist in the 1,650-yard freestyle following her 2023 silver with a bronze in 2024 with a season-best time of 15:46.90.
 
The native of Singapore was a two-time All-American in 2024, adding a fifth-place showing in the 800-yard freestyle relay. She also won the 1,650-yard freestyle at the Big Ten Championships as the Hoosiers came away with the conference title.
 
Gan was a three-time All-American at the 2023 National Championships. In addition to finishing second in the 1,650 freestyle she was an All-American in the 500-freestyle and 800-freestyle relay. As a freshman she was an honorable mention All-American in the 1,650-freestyle, coming in tenth.
 
She had represented Singapore at each of the last three World Championships, finishing 14th in the 1,500-meter freestyle at all three. At the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, Gan bested her own Singaporean national record with a time of 16:20.88.
 
Eleven of the 32 members of the Academic All-America® Division I women’s swimming & diving teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate work or graduate school. The 11 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.85.
 
In addition to Gan, ten other student-athletes are repeat selections on the Academic All-America® Division I women’s team – Anna Bradescu (Georgia Tech), Kaitlyn Dobler (University of Southern California), Brooklyn Douthwright (University of Tennessee), Anne Fowler (Indiana University), Josephine Fuller (University of Tennessee), Amy Fulmer (The Ohio State University), Anna Havens Rice (University of Kentucky), Mona McSharry (University of Tennessee), Emma Sticklen (University of Texas), and Gretchen Walsh (University of Virginia). Dobler is now a three-time honoree, earning first team honors last year and second team in 2021-22.

NCAA Division II

Benedict Nagy, a graduate student from Reno, Nevada, competed at the University of Nevada as an undergraduate student before helping Colorado Mesa to its sixth Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship followed by a second-place showing at the NCAA Division II National Championships. That is the highest in school history.
 
She earned All-American honors in five events in 2024, including winning national championships in the 200-yard IM (1:58.63) and 400-yard IM (4:10.40). She also placed second with the 800 freestyle relay team, and fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke and fourth in the 200-yard butterfly. She scored 70 points at the NCAA Championships, tied for the second-most of any women's athlete.
 
Nagy ranks second in Division II history in the 400 IM (4:10.40) and ninth in the 200 IM (1:58.63). She set school records in the 200 IM, 400 IM & 200 butterfly (1:58.63) at the NCAA Championships. In addition to the national championships, she won four events at the RMAC Championships, set championships records in the 400 IM (4:16.00) and 800-freestyle relay (7:19.44). She also won the 200 IM and 200 butterfly events along with a second-place showing in the 200-breaststroke. Nagy tied for the high-point award (77).
 
While at Nevada, Nagy was a three-time Mountain West Conference 400 IM champion & 2023 Division I NCAA qualifier.

Nine of the 33 members of the Academic All-America® Division II women’s swimming & diving teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate work or graduate school. The 10 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.89.
 
There are ten repeat selections on the Academic All-America® Division II women’s swimming & diving teams – Brooklyn Dressel (Cal State East Bay), Jordan Fox (Wayne State University), Zara Konstapel (University of Missouri-St. Louis), Stefanie Markwardt (University of Indianapolis), Luna Mertins (Lynn University), Victoria Murillo (University of Mary), Jorie Selig (Colorado School of Mines), Mikaela Senkus (Wayne State University), Lauren White (Colorado Mesa University), and Montana White (Azusa Pacific University). Lauren White is a three-time selection.

NCAA Division III

A Biology major with a 4.00 GPA, Alex Turvey capped an outstanding career with six All-American certificates at the 2024 NCAA Division III National Championships. She helped Pomona-Pitzer to the national championship in two relays, the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:31.54) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:20.59). The last time the school had finished as the national champion in an event was 1983-84.
 
In addition, the native of Vancouver, Canada was the national runner-up in three events – the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle, and the 100-yard butterfly. Finally, she was part of a sixth-place squad in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The showing helped the Sagehens finish seventh at the National Championships.
 
Turvey was a seven-time All-American while competing at the 2023 NCAA Division III National Championships. Her highest finish came in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing second. In addition, she was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay, fifth in the 200-yard medley relay, sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay, seventh in the 400-yard medley relay, eighth in the 100-yard freestyle, and tenth in the 50-yard freestyle. In addition, she was the 2023 Elite 90 Award recipient.
 
Nine of the 31 members of the Academic All-America® Division III women’s swimming & diving teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate work or graduate school. The 11 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.92.
 
Including Turvey, six student-athletes are repeat selections on the Academic All-America® Division III women’s swimming & diving teams – Kate Augustyn (MIT), Sloane Donovan (Emory University), Sarah Dougherty (Fairleigh Dickinson University – Florham), Kerstyn Johnson (Denison University) and Sydney McCallie (Kenyon College).

NAIA

Hanna te Velthuis is now a three-time Academic All-America® team member and was previously named the NAIA Team Member of the Year in 2022-23 while competing at the University of the Cumberlands. She competed as a graduate student this past year for Milligan University, showing a 3.77 GPA in Occupational Therapy.   
 
The native of Beerzerveld, Netherlands helped Milligan to a third-place finish at the 2024 NAIA National Championships. All told she was a eight-time All-American, topped by third-place showings in the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay. In addition, she touched fourth in three events – the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle relay, and 400-yard medley relay, along with a fifth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Finally, she was part of the sixth-place 400-yard freestyle relay and came in seventh in the 100-yard freestyle.
 
Te Velthuis helped Milligan to a third straight Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) championship.
 
A year ago, she led Cumberlands to a fourth-place finish at the NAIA National Championships, earning All-American honors five times while competing in the 200 and 400 medley relays, and 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relay.
 
Two of the ten members of the Academic All-America® NAIA women’s swimming & diving teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA. The ten members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.85. te Velthuis is one of four repeat performers on the NAIA team. In addition, Leyre Antonanzas (St. Ambrose University) and Erica Samuel (Indiana Wesleyan University) were on the 2022-23 team, and Gabby MacPherson (Milligan University) was on the 2021-22 at-large team.
