Situated in a dense urban neighborhood near downtown Bandung, Indonesia, the site is a 186-square meter lot with 2.8-meter wide alley as its main road, which can only accommodate one small car at a time. The client, a pediatrician who grew up in the neighborhood, along with his wife and their only son, requested a small house with library.
Given a 4-meter building setback regulation and left with a little breathing room, we try to make the layout as compact as possible in order to encompass setbacks, openings, and courtyard for passive cooling on this particular site. The main idea is to design a simple C-shaped layout around the green void. We put transition spaces on the longer west edge while maximizing the rest of the spaces by foregoing extra rooms to maintain good airflow and natural light through east side courtyard. Services area and public uses such as the living and dining room are set on the ground floor. The upper floor contains private area where master and second bedrooms are at the back and front volumes respectively. A study room that doubles as a family room and library occupies the space in between.
To maintain privacy, we limited the façade to opaque and translucent elements; a plain white wall concealing the private functions, a segment of glass block that serves natural light to the kitchen, a see-through screened terrace on the left of the upper floor and steel grilled front door that fuses the indoor-outdoor boundaries. The interior spaces, however, maximize openings via terraces and operable windows to the courtyard. Lastly, we gave the house a little accent with extended red beams to complete the house silhouette where the voids are located.
