[ chanting ] it's not over till it's over. the new fight to keep the a's in oakland. good morning and happy wednesday. i'm nicole zaloumis. stay in oakland. those were the chants, they said it was like a wwe wrestling event. people were so animated and standing room only i think it's going to happen, g. >> it's -- it feels like it's a possibility once again and you know, a's fans we are rooting for you and hoping okay land gets to keep a team. good morning, i'm gianna franco and reed cowan has the morning off. we have to get you out the door and out and about and jess, how's the forecast looking?
5:02 am
you know, yesterday i was over in your neck of the woods, gianna, over in pacifica and it was so windy. crazy windy. the same trend today along the coastline with wind gusts anywhere up to around 30 miles per hour this afternoon. this is what we're starting off with this morning. a lot lighter as we're waking up this morning. we're sitting in the 40s throughout the bay. and nice and cool down into livermore all the way into the santa clara valley. with these clear nights, oh my gosh, i mean the overnight lows really dip down fast and we were forecasting that all week long. these overnight lows are getting really chill little so as you head out the door this morning you are definitely going to notice it especially if you have a routine in the morning. if you walk the dog or if you have to walk to the car, turn it on as soon as possible to get the heat going and it's a chilly morning for us even into san francisco. sitting at 53 degrees. now here's what we're looking at as we e head into the next couple of days. high pressure is moving its way in. we'll continue to see the offshore wind allowing for a little bit drier conditions into this afternoon. to add to that, the offshore winds will get pretty breezy in areas like
5:03 am
half-moon bay and pacifica anywhere up to around 25 miles per hour this morning alone. we continue to see that trend into this afternoon. so breezy conditions for us today along the coast. lighter conditions in our inland areas. but daytime highs today, unlike yesterday, now they're above average. so let me drop this and show what it's gong to like like as we head into this afternoon. we're starting to see 70s return into the forecast just north of the golden gate bridge. upper 70s in the forecast -- excuse me, lower 70s for us widespread throughout the bay area. so slowly this week we're going to start warming up a little bit more. for now over to you, g. all right, thank you. let's talk about the freeways this morning. if you are getting ready and out the door early, bay bridge toll plaza, live look here. it's off to a great start. metering lights are off. and no delays heading into san francisco easy ride right now across the upper deck. getting on b.a.r.t. this morning. early trains just getting under way and in fact three minutes ago. so so far, so good. yellow, blue, red, green lines all moving along no troubles or issues. so if that is your commute this morning, we're
5:04 am
looking pretty good. and over here, live look at 880. you can see both directions of the roadway everything is moving along nicely if you are headed northbound towards the bay bridge, clear ride there. southbound no delays as you head over down into hayward. now taking that ride over to the san mateo bridge, definitely maybe plan for just a couple of extra minutes making that connector on to 92. but if you are up early out of san jose, everything is clear 101, 280 and 87. nicole? do you ride b.a.r.t.? half a million people a day used to. but the pandemic and crime scared most away. >> it's lost about 60% of its average daily riders. >> now b.a.r.t. is on the brink. all this week we expose what's wrong and what it will take for b.a.r.t. to survive. >> we're taking a closer look this week on all of b.a.r.t.'s problems. and potential solutions. right now, there's
5:05 am
no connection to livermore and the san joaquin valley and at one point, it was considered a missed opportunity. but now a former east bay mayor who fought hard for the extension no longer believes b.a.r.t. is the best option. and in fact, he says point-blank b.a.r.t. is a train wreck. so now the valley is coming up with its own solution, a missing link that could be a win for both b.a.r.t. and commuters. here's juliette goodrich. >> reporter: let's take a ride back five years to 2018. our lead story? b.a.r.t. to livermore. >> should trains run all the way to livermore? east bay commuters waiting on a key decision tonight. >> reporter: that key decision a proposed b.a.r.t. extension that would run along 580 from the dublin, pleasanton station to a new station near livermore. at the time, livermore's mayor was john mar shand. >> we have been working to bring five miles of b.a.r.t. for 40 years. it's time. >> reporter: but according to
5:06 am
the b.a.r.t. board, it wasn't time. and voted against a b.a.r.t. to livermore extension. mayor marshand's view on b.a.r.t. now today? five years later? >> b.a.r.t. is a train wreck. >> reporter: we talked to the mayor just after he rode b.a.r.t. from pleasanton to oakland to attend an alameda transportation commission meeting. >> there's a guy smoking crack on my car. i'm going to fold it out and start -- you know, smoking right on the train. >> reporter: he took photos. >> so this is -- this is monday and this is the guy smoking crack. >> reporter: mayor marshand says he would still like to see more public transit options. but he joins other residents who are convinced b.a.r.t. just isn't the best option for them. let me ask you, last time you rode b.a.r.t.? >> i'd say about a year and a half ago. >> reporter: took you a while to remember? >> i would use it if i felt like it was a viable option. that it was safer. >> people no longer think of b.a.r.t. as safe. you know b.a.r.t. used to be fun. but b.a.r.t. is now -- is become an
5:07 am
ordeal. >> reporter: but driving in heavy traffic is also an ordeal. so this is 580 heading toward livermore on a good day. but there is always traffic. and trucks driving along this route. and no public transit. once you pass the dublin pleasanton b.a.r.t. station. >> i think b.a.r.t. in a death spiral and i think one of the really saving graces for b.a.r.t. may be to actually -- it's another project that i'm working on. and that's valley link. >> reporter: valley link is a proposed commuter rail from the dublin pleasanton b.a.r.t. to the san joaquin valley adding stops along the way. tracy, and north lathrop. the regional rain authority is leading the effort is. valley link full speed ahead? is this a go? >> we are full speed ahead. currently in the environmental and preliminary engineering pace. >> reporter: how far along are we down the tracks so to speak, to seeing a valley link? >> so our goal is to complete construction by the end of 2027. there are currently
5:08 am
approximately 200,000 vehicles a day going over the altamont pass coming from the san joaquin valley. and there is not a rail transit station. this is much like an e b.a.r.t. style train. except it wouldn't be run by b.a.r.t.. simply be delivering the commuters to bart's front door and that's -- in essence would bring the fare revenues back up because we're bringing the customer to their front gate. >> reporter: mayor believes it is just the link b.a.r.t. needs. >> so the real saving grace is going to be transit. and that's going to be valley link and hydropowered train. zero pollution. coming over the altamont pass and carrying thousands of people. to connect with b.a.r.t.. and as i said that's i think going to be b.a.r.t.'s saving grace. >> and we know all too well that altamont pass commute is a tough one for the mornings. but right now, let's get a live look from a b.a.r.t. train the morning commute is officially under way. we're seeing a few people out there. this is the

green line. which connects people all the way towards sfo all the way into antioch. we continue the look at the experiences of different vieders around the bay area here on the morning edition. and our shawn chitnis is live today at the millbrae b.a.r.t. station with a perspective of someone who uses the red line when traveling to and from sfo. hey shawn, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning. and so yeah, this was really interesting to hear someone who doesn't really have a direct connection from b.a.r.t. to their community. but still makes the effort and finds it a convenient option when possible to travel to the airport from her home. passengers making their way to sfo by b.a.r.t. can get dropped off right at the airport's international terminal. >> i'm just getting back from a long flight from singapore. and i'm use it to get home to palo alto. >> reporter: among those using the red line to get home, who says she tries to use b.a.r.t. when she can even though she has to transfer from caltrain in-between her home and the
5:10 am
airport. >> i use it pretty frequently. not wean i'm on a time crunch because it takes a little bit longer. >> reporter: she lives in an area not directly connected to b.a.r.t. but she uses the service not just to get to the airport, but also to get around san francisco. >> i like it when i'm going into the city and like when i'm trying to go to the mission. and you know, going to restaurant and get to parts of the city that caltrain can't access. >> reporter: she knows safety concerns remain for many riders and financial challenges have left b.a.r.t.'s future uncertain. but even without more access around the region, she plans to keep riding b.a.r.t.. >> i like it and you know, i realize it's a lot to build more like -- you know, infrastructure to get it more places. but overall, yeah. i -- i think it's a good public transit system. >> reporter: and so yesterday when we were there at the airport station in the late morning, we didn't see too many people using b.a.r.t. to head into their particular community from the airport. there were a decent number of people who were arriving into the airport. because it is worth noting she

ultimately travels a short distance we melt somebody else also using it to come here to millbrae. but still it's worth appreciating that after a 13 hour long international flight, she was still waiting patiently to use b.a.r.t.. back to you. >> sometimes the airport ride makes it pretty easy to get back to the city. >> from some of the comments that we have heard from viewers, seems like many are ready to just write the system off altogether. but they may not have stopped to really think about what a bay area without b.a.r.t. would look like. >> cloudy really erode the overall quality of life here. >> i would say my life would be slower and be more expensive. >> it's not going to go away. but what if it did in our max darrow takes a look at that scenario tonight at 11:00. stay with us through the week for more of our series "b.a.r.t. on the brink." you can find all of our stories on a special section on kpix.com. time is 5:11. the home of the san francisco giants is getting a new and one of a kind

comes to the city deep, deep down knows it too. especially during summertime when everyone is dealing with triple digits and san francisco is in the 60s. but hey, let's take a quick look at what's going on this morning. it is chilly as we're starting off the day and we see clear skies outside right now. temperatures sitting in the 40s and this is a lot cooler than yesterday morning so definitely find something to bundle up in. it's off to a cool start this morning and we're sitting in the upper 40s near san jose. 50s in the forecast for us in the heart of san francisco. and stretching all the way north from novato all the way up intopetaluma. more 40s for us this morning and daytime highs today, they're not going to warm up too much more compared to yesterday. now here's the thing. on futurecast, we're seeing clear skies. we see clouds slowly starting to roll into the forecast into thursday and friday. but other than that, i mean we don't have a rain in the forecast as of now. it's just going to be cloudy skies heading into our weekend setup and temperatures right around average. upper 60s lower 70s. and see this system that just swept its way throughout? that's going to bring in the clouds and it's going to bring in rain to the north of us closer to the pacific northwest but buy the time it hits us
5:19 am
we're just seeing cloudy skies and the next chance of showers actually rolls its way in next week. so we'll watch the long-range models and i mentioned it earlier. daytime highs today around average. but match that with the gusty conditions we see today along the coast, it's a mild day for us here in the bay. despite the fact that we have some gusty conditions just along our coastline. so if you live near half-moon bay, you definitely noticed it yesterday. it was breezy as can be in pacifica but inland areas, nothing over the pass. 60s along our peninsula for daytime highs and 70s off into inland areas and 70s in the north bay stretching all the way down into the santa clara valley. it's a mild fall forecast for us here in the bay area. let me show you the next seven days. as we extend into this weekend, we're going to see a little bit of mix of clouds and sun. cloudy skies as we head into thursday and friday. as that frontal system moves its way in. that will cool us off just a little bit with the temperatures and then we're right back to 70s and sunshine as we head into
5:20 am
saturday. it's not until next tuesday that's the next chance that we'll actually see the showers return into the forecast. and that's not only in for the inland forecast, it's a very similar trend for the bay too. notice how we see gist a little bit of a cooldown into thursday and friday. then showers as we head into next week. right around the corner as early as tuesday. so we're starting to get into that wet season that we've been anticipating and it's finally here in the bay. we had a little bit this week and we're going to get a lot more as we head into midportions of next week. for now over to you, g. thank you. let's talk about the freeways right now. and a live look as we kick things off this time around with the golden gate bridge. which is looking beautiful this morning. no delays or any backup right now. in fact, visibility looks great and not an issue at all for anyone making that ride out of marin county. headed over into san francisco, via the golden gate bridge, now is a good time to be out there on the roadways. that's the advantage of waking up early right? less cars out there and less delays and you will get there a little bit faster. that same story goes for the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights are off. no delays. clear ride over into san francisco this morning. if you are coming out of the city on the lower deck which is
5:21 am
countercommute, very lightly traveled right now and no construction either the upper or lower deck this morning. everything is moving along pretty nicely. skip the roadways right now. a lot about b.a.r.t. as the "b.a.r.t. on the brink" series continues. checking in on travel times. everything is good to go for now. no delays. everything is right on time. b.a.r.t. just getting rolling at 5:00 a.m. this morning. all right, live look here at 880. the nimitz freeway. so far, everything is moving along pretty nicely. not too far from the coliseum, this is a live look near hegenberger. traffic though looks pretty good. taking 880 down to the san mateo bridge live look here and you can see there's a few cars making their ride westbound over to 101 but the travel times only about 13 minutes. that is it to go from the nimitz over to the peninsula side. so if you are crossing the bay that way, traffic is moving along really nicely with no delays or issues. newspaperrers, jags, both teams coming off the bye weeks and niners trying to salvage their season. they're going to be all right. can they get back on track? we'll have that in
5:22 am
the "red and gold report." but before we head to break, how about a live look at the green line? it's moving smoothly on this wednesday. as we continue our "b.a.r.t. on the brink" series. all week long. we'll be right back.
