Knights men's soccer clips Screaming Eagles 2-1 behind goals from Workman, Linscott

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team scored once in each half in defeating Southern Indiana 2-1 on Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Senior forward Joe Workman and freshman midfielder Micah Linscott tallied the goals for Bellarmine (5-1, 3-1 GLVC), which has won three straight matches. Senior midfielders Nathan Jones and Ryan Fagan notched assists against the Screaming Eagles (2-3, 0-3).

Bellarmine had an impressive 25-9 advantage in shots against a USI squad that was idle on Friday while the Knights won an overtime affair with McKendree. Bellarmine had 11 shots on goal to the five of the Screaming Eagles and a decisive 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.

After some near-misses, Workman scored his third goal of the season in the 16th minute. Jones made a short pass ahead to him from the right wing, and Workman chipped the ball over charging USI goalkeeper Adam Zehme and into the net.

Bellarmine came up empty on several prime scoring chances in the second half before Linscott converted his second goal of the season in the 74th minute. Fagan did a tremendous job down the right sideline of keeping a ball inbounds, and he raced down toward the corner and fired a cross to Linscott, who lined in a header for a 2-0 lead.

Linscott's goal proved to be the game-winner. Eric Ramirez rebounded a save by Bellarmine junior goalkeeper Zach Pogue and pushed in a goal to cut the Knights' lead in half in the 80th minute. Bellarmine did a fine job of milking the clock for the remainder of regulation to secure the win with little drama unfolding over the final 10 minutes.

Bellarmine is idle Friday and will play Sunday at Indianapolis.
