Nicolaas Pieneman, Hand Study

Nicolaas Pieneman, Hand Study

An intriguing hand study of a lady holding a book by Dutch artist, Nicolaas Pieneman. It's probably after a 17th-century portrait so perhaps it’s a copy of an Old Master. It’s tricky to track down the original painting but the long fingers are a little reminiscent of Van Dyck.

The portrait is signed on the book and housed within a later frame.

Conservation & History

We care profoundly about our role as custodians and every piece in the collection has been assessed by our conservator. When required, we undertake professional restoration carefully using reversible techniques and adopt a light touch to retain the aged charm of each work. We also restore frames rather than replace them as many are original and selected by the artists themselves.
