| Description |
Manuel Carlos Piar was born in Willemstad in 1774, the son of a Spanish sailor and a Dutch/African mother. After moving to Caracas with his mother when he was 10, Piar found himself involved in a number of conflicts in the region, including the 1804 battle to restore Dutch rule in Curaçao after the English had gained control of the island during the Napoleonic Wars and the war with Spain for Venezuelan independence. The statue of Carlos Manuel Piar is located near the Fort Amsterdan in Willemstad, Curaçao. The statue was donated to Curaçao by Venezuela in 1963. |
