AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State tennis team fell to the Kansas Jayhawks 6-1, at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center on Saturday. The Jayhawks, 3-8 overall and 1-2 in the Big 12, took five of the six singles matches against the Cyclones. With the loss Iowa State falls to 4-4 (0-4).
In doubles action, the Cyclones battled the Jayhawks down to the final point. In the No. 1 slot, KU's tandem of Elizaveta Avdeeva and Edina Horvath defeated ISU's Kara Hickey and Eve Soriano, 8-6. In the No. 2 slot Kansas' Lauren Hommell and Yuliana Svistun defeated Iowa State's Jill Palen and Caitlin Loprinzi, 8-6.
"I thought Jill and Caitlin played really well in their doubles match," head coach Michele Conlon said.
In the No. 3 slot, Kunigunda Dorn and Stephanie Smith held on to defeat ISU's Chrissy Derouin and Alyssa Palen, 9-7.
In singles action, ISU's Jill Palen battled hard against KU's Avdeeva before falling 7-5, 6-3.
"I was very pleased with the way Jill played today," Conlon stated. "She has been under the weather lately so I was very pleased with her overall performance."
In the No. 2 line, KU's Dorn defeated Hickey 6-2, 6-3, while in the No. 3 slot KU's Horvath defeated ISU's Loprinzi 6-1, 6-1. Iowa State's Derouin won by default in the No. 6 slot.
The Cyclones will hit the courts next on March 13, as they travel to Wilmington, N.C., to taken on UNC-Wilmington.
