Anita Wilson Sings her Soulful Roots!

Uplifting, light hearted, and fun; Anita Wilson’s music gives us soul and satisfaction. Recording artist and songwriter, Anita Wilson stepped in to talk to us about music and inspiration.

I first realized I wanted a career in music the night I recorded my first album”.  Anita went to explain how her parents made her sing when she was younger, but she didn’t really have a love for it at the time. “Music has always been a huge part of my family and my life but I wasn’t enthused to DO music”. Anita continued, “I later began to develop as a songwriter, so I had aspirations to write and have my songs recorded by other people”.  Anita knew she had to get her demo out to different artist so she could pitch her songs. “When I reflected on how the recording went, I knew in my heart something special took place and that I was supposed to move forward in the lane of not only being a songwriter but being a solo artist as well”.

Anita expressed her love for music and how it influenced her sound and personal experiences. “I am a music lover”.  “That includes ALL music. R&B Soul, Gospel, Jazz, Pop, Folk, etc”. Anita added, “My parents played it all in the house growing up. The record player was always spinning amazing music for which I’m so incredibly grateful”. Anita continued by explaining how at an early age music gave her a strong appreciation for these genres. “This love has persisted and grown over the years. 90s R&B/Soul is my favorite era and genre of music. I also love 80s/90s Gospel, 70s Soul, 80s Pop…I love it all!” Anita continued by saying, “SO, inevitably, when creating music, all of these influences are naturally and organically infused without even trying. It’s quite a fun process because it results in nostalgic and familiar vibes in my original music that (hopefully) resonates with the listeners”.

When they press play, I really want my “SOULdiers” to feel my music and not just hear it”. Anita replied when asked what kind of experience she’d like her listeners to have while listening to her music. “I want the music to connect to their hearts, minds and souls giving them exactly what they are in need of: uplifting, light-hearted and fun vibes, encouragement, music that moves them to praise and worship God, or enjoy their solitude”. Anita added, “I like to create music that makes people want to play it over and over again and share it with others because of how good it makes them feel. My goal has always been to create music of substance that will last long after I’m gone”.

Growing up with roots in a Baptist church, Anita spoke about her experiences. “Having roots in the Baptist Church has had a huge impact on my music especially being the daughter of a Pastor who was also a singer and musician”. Anita continued, “My Dad and Mom were my first ‘music teachers’.  I learned traditional Gospel choir music, hymns and classic songs that have stuck with me all these years and always prove to be a solid foundation, not only for me to draw from for musical inspiration but also to stand on and be encouraged while on my life’s journey”. Anita added, “There’s just something about traditional Gospel music that reaches the heart.  Growing up hearing sermons and Sunday school lessons fueled my faith in God which has continued to grow stronger along my journey. I’m truly grateful for my roots and foundation in the Baptist Church”.
