噤む 単体では使わず、「口をつぐむ」という形でのみ使います。(また、常用外漢字のため、読めない人が多く、基本的にひらがなで表記されます。)
意味合いは同じですが、黙る のほうが頻用されます。

辞書では同じような意味で出てきますが、「噤む」には、本人が意図的に喋らない感じを出しているニュアンスがあります。
