Editors Letter Welcome to the first exciting issue of our new, merged magazine, Chiltern View. We have listened to our readers and advertisers and put together a magazine that combines the best things from all 3 of our previous magazines. You will now have a greater range of fantastic local businesses to choose from and a much wider spread of community information. We know that many of you like to support local events and you will now be able to find even more by visiting the new events calendar on our website at www.chilterviewmagazines.co.uk. There will also be information about all our clubs and societies – something for everyone.

It wasn’t easy choosing a cover to mark our ‘new look’ but we decided to go with this stunning Common Blue butterfly. We chose it because it represents one of the many great things about the Chilterns and our expansive area of outstanding natural beauty. These beautiful butterflies can be found at many sites in the Chilterns that are managed by The Berks, Bucks and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust and you can find details about visiting these amazing venues at www.bbowt.org and following the links. We also decided that a butterfly represents new beginnings and we feel that this is just what we are doing at Chiltern View, so we hope you agree and will be as pleased with the results as we are. We do hope you enjoy reading this new magazine. Until the next time

Summer Escapes From future catastrophes to whole new worlds, this month’s reads are pure escapism. The Night Brother – Rosie Garland

Two souls – one body. Nineteenth century Manchester is home to Edie by day and Gnome by night. But as both start to resent the other’s presence, an internal war breaks out which threatens to tear them apart. Throw in suffragettes, love affairs and family dynamics, and you have a truly absorbing read. If you enjoyed Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, or anything by Angela Carter, this book is for you.

The Girl of Ink and Stars – Kiran Millwood Hargrave

Isabella’s village is under the control of the ruthless Governor Adori, but the surrounding woods are under the control of a force even more dangerous. Isabella dreams of crossing the forest and charting the Forbidden Territories. A girl is found dead, and Isabella’s friend, Lupe, goes missing. With nothing to guide her but an ancient map, her beliefs, and her determination, Isabella sets out to rescue Lupe. This children’s book has gained rave reviews and while it lacks the depth needed to truly appeal to an adult audience, it’ll keep 9-12 year olds enthralled.

Menagerie – Rachel Vincent

A travelling carnival has come to town, complete with its menagerie of fantastical beings. Delilah has always thought herself human, but her reaction at the exhibits’ treatment is anything but, and shee is locked away and put on display herself. Deelilah befriends her fellow captives, refuses to accept her slavery and forms an uneasy alliance with one of her ‘handlers’. But is escape really an opption in a world where she has fewer rights than an animal? An easy, enjoyable read, perfect for the sunn lounger.

A Wizard of Earthsea – Ursula K. Le Guin

A boy wizard learning to control hiis poweerss, mystical lands, magical battles, dragons – this book 16

has them all. First published in 1968, A Wizard of Earthsea tells the story of Ged – a boy who saves his village from attack and is sent to train to be a wizard. He learns to control his power, but accidently unleashes a shadow creature that neaarly destroys him. Like Rowling, Tolkein andd nuumerouus other fantasy writers, Le Guin’s wo ork wiill apppeall to older children and adults alike.

Naondel – Maria Turtschaninoff

19 year old Kariba falls fo or a power-hunggry young man and reveals to him m the secrets of herr family’s spring: it can foretell the future and besto ow health or harm. Once Iskaan has harnessed thee spring’s power, there is litt ttle anyone can do to stop him. He starts collectinng women to his hareem, treating them as little mo ore than playthings. Naondel is told from the point of view of Karibaa and the other women, over the span of seeveral decades. Beaautifully written, and at times quite harrowing, this wiill stay with you long afteer you’ve turned the lastt page.

The Space Between the Stars – Anne Corlett

Jamie survives a virus that’s wiped out most of humanity. Shhe’s on a planet far from m home, and far from Daniel – the man she once loved. Together with the handful of other survivors she finds, Jamie sets out on the long journey across the stars back to Earth. If you’re not a sci-fi fan, don’t let that put you off. The Space Between the Stars is much more about human relationships and fragile societies than it is about space ships. This has summer bestseller written all over it. Do I have a Honeybee Swarm? A couple of weeks ago, some residents of Kingston Blount discovered a large Honeybee swarm which was expertly dealt with by a local Swarm Collector. If you do discover a swarm then go to their website at www.bbka.org.uk and enter your postcode to find the best person available to help. Here are a few tips and information to help you identify a swarm of honeybees and what to do.

& wasps. There are also other insects that may be mistaken for honeybees so it’s always good to check first. What do the insects look like? Honeybees are small and vary in colour from golden brown to almost black. Does your resting swarm loo ok like e th his picture? If you think you have gott a swarm and our pictures look like the one you have noticced, then please contact your local Swarm Collecctor who will provide approppriate help or advicce with your honey bee swarm m. We would like to thank Gayle Spiller, who watched the whole proceess and kindly supplieed all these photos which show the care taken to relocate the beees and make sure these exxtremely valued creaatures are protected.

Beekeepers are often approached about winged, flying creatures, especially in the spring and summer period when they are their most activee, simply working and are no cause for alarm. However, if you are worried about a potenntial threat to the public or the bees, then thee best place to get advice for this is on the BB BKA website at www.bbka.org.uk, wherre they can help you find out what kind off insect you have and therefore what to do abbouut it. Travelling Abroad With Pets Dr. Kathryn Miller MRCVS Summer is here and it’s time to start thinking about your 2017 holidays! This doesn’t necessarily mean your pet has to be left at home. The PETS travel scheme makes it easy for your dog orr cat to come along on vacation with you - so lonng as you they meet certain criteria. Your pet will need a passpport, a microchip andd a rabies vaccination. He will then neeed to wait 21 days until he can travel, so make suree you leave yourself plennty of time. In order to re-enter the UK at thhe end of the holiday your dog will need to see a veet to have a tapeworm tablet administered. Although not a legal requirement, it is recommended that your pet is up to date with his annual vaccinations as well as his flea and tick

CROSSROADS

treatments to protect him from catching exotic diseases. Extra protection against diseases that are not within the UK may also be required, for example leishmania and heartworm. If you are travelling outside of the EU the process of preparing your pet can take longer and a blood test after the rabies vaccination may be required. A health certificate may be required and a vet may need to certify that your animal is fit to travel. If you are thinking of taking your pet abroad talk to your vet as soon as possible to ensure you leave yourself enough time to prepare your pet for travel. We at Crossroads Veterinary Centre are happy to help prepare your pet for travel.

Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Hello, my name is Tugal, I’m about 6 years old and I am a female lurcher type. I previously lived with 2 other females in the home and had no issues; but I cannot live with cats or other small furry animals. My prey drive is incredibly strong and I will neeed experienced owners who are used to thhis. I would love access to a large encloseed garden so that I can run around and burn off my energy as I will not be ablee to go off lead in public. I do have a slightly worrried side to me, so it can sometimes take a little whilee to o warm to some people. I wouuld benefitt from having a quiet area that is just fo or me, a safe place I can go to when visitors ennteer the home.

Your Bone Health

It is estimated that around 3 million people in the UK have osteoporosis. In the UK, one in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 will fracture a bone, mainly due to poor bone health, and with an ageing population, these figures are likely to increase.

Frustratinglyy though, osteoporrosis is often a silent condition, givving no pain or otheer symptoms to alert patients to its presence until the worst happens and a bone breaaks. As such, many people living with osteoporosiss are unaware that theey have fragile bones until this happens, sometimes with devastatiing consequuencces. Osteopaths arre often seen by the general public as experts in the field of bone health, and ass such,, they are well placed to screen paatients for this condition and offer pracctiicaal advice on risk factors, prevention and treatment. Osteoporosis affects an estimated 3 million people in the UK. It is a condition of the bones

that causes them to become fragile and break more easily. The condition itself is usually silent, those with osteoporosis are often unaware that they have it until they suffer a broken bone, which in turn can cause pain and loss of mobility. Osteopaths are working with the National Osteoporosis Society to help you find out if you are at risk and what you can do to help yourself. Osteopaths like David, are well placed to screen paatients for osteoporosis and offer practical advice on risk factors, prevention and treatment. Ask your osteopath about osteoporosis screening and management as well as other ways to keep your bones & tissue’s healthy.

Hereweareenjoyingthelongdaysofsummer, albeitnotalwayspredictableweather. Time to start thinking about an Autumn/Winter break! Looking for something a little different? We are featuring Scandinavia and all it represents – great hospitality, great food and so much more. Choose Sweden – great city breaks to Stockholm and Gothenburg. Stockholm is widely considered one of the most romantic cities in Europe. Out of the city you can find an archipelago of 30,000 islands and skerries and the stunning countryside. Gothenburg in the west is a cosmopolitan city with over 10,000 islands, pretty villages, vast forests and beautiful lakes. We must not forget that in the winter, Lapland is the perfect family destination to meet Father Christmas and is so popular that it is recommended to book early.

Travelling as part of a group or taking a short cruise is the perfect way to experience this region – remember it will be slightly cooler here. Denmark – the smallest and southernmost country of Scandinavia. With its rich Viking heritage, endless countryside, glorious sandy beaches…. not something you would perhaps expect; the vibrant capital city of Copenhagen, provides a great short break destination. Surrounded by a myriad of lakes, canals and waterways, the heart of the city is jampacked with medieval buildings, colourful harbours, narrow cobbled streets and The Royal Palace. Places to stay – there is something to suit every ry budget. Simple hotel rooms to more luxuurio ous abodes with spa facilities. How abouut moree traaditional accommodation in the form of caabins and lo odgess overlooking stunning scenery? There are gennerallyy good reductions for children aged 2-12 years. It would be remiss not to menntion the remarkablle and unusual Ice Hotel in Sweden – this ho otel is spectacularly re-built eveery winter from freshh ice. How to get there – direct flights from m London, with some regionall options. Generally transfers are included to annd from your hotel. For cruises, there are a multittude of options – morre details are available at Speaar Travels.

Norway – stretching from the North Sea coastline to the borders of Finland and Russia, this delightful country is largely unexplored. The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) make this a perfect place to visit for a unique experience. They are generally visible between November and March, although this can never be guaranteed. Assk Spear Travels for details of the various options to o experience the Northern Lights, from an evenning excursion to a longer stay. Visit the city of Oslo – known as one of the most liveable cities. Take your breatth away with a trip to the magnificent Fjords and Trondelag.

YOUR FINANCIAL YEAR I’ve said it before, but that’s not going to stop me saying it again! Financial Planning is essential when it comes to running a successful business and when I say Financial Planning I don’t just mean working from month to month but actually being aware of your whole year in respect of your business - the months behind you and the months ahead. Whilst planning and implementation of those plans does of course go on during a , .I twelve month period, to conduct a couple of overall reviews of where you’ve been and where you’re going. This could be at the end of the year, perhaps over the Christmas period and then again perhaps in the Summer, possibly July, which is obviously not bang in the middle but which often coincides with a slightly quieter period. Setting up of these reviews at roughly the same times in your working year means you’re taking a step back to ensure that, as far as possible, you’re on top and ahead of things and that you business rather than the business running you. If there’s one thing that my years of experience of working closely with small businesses and sole traders has taught me, it’s that all too often there’s too much focus on the here and now and not nearly enough on what’s coming up in the future nor on where things might have gone a bit awry in the recent past. Running a small business inevitably means that at any given time you’re wearing any number of different hats including marketing, selling, innovating, client contact, supplier research and of course bookkeeping so it’s hardly surprising that there are cracks into which things can slip from time to time. Dates vary depending on your business but a few ideas are highlighted below: • January 31st. Final date for online submission of self-assessment. Late • During March. used up all your personal allowances, re your pension contributions, ISAs and anything else you might want in place prior to April 5th. • April 5th. The end of the tax year. • During April. If you make July payments, get your tax return done and ready. You may reduce the amount of tax you have to pay in July. • During June. to the last minute for your end of year tax return. • October 31st.

Summer Saving! The long days of summer are not just lazy for us, they are also a quiet time for many tradesmen.

Other businesses with a quiet period d during the summer

Think about it; as soon as the temperature drops at the end of Septembber people will beggin to think about cold snapps and central heatting. They’ll probably arraange for their boiler to bee serviced... along with eveeryone else. So get ahhead of the game and book now.

Summer is traditionally a quiet time for financial advisers and companies specialising in investments. Perhaps you could benefit from a financial makeover.

Whhile you’re at it, if you havve an open firee or a solid fuel range, order fuel now w, in bullk while youu can take advantage of low wer summer prricess. Summer is also a good tiime to organise a chimnney sweep. There arren’t too many about and they tend to be sw wamped in the autumn as people think about using thheir fireplace again.

46

Bizarrely it’s a quiet time for train and coach travel so you might be able to pick up a bargain ticket or two. The summer is generally a good time to check out your local high street for great deals on electrical goods. By Tom Hancock

SUMMER HEARING It’s been a long cold winter and at Aston Hearing we are looking forward to a summer of barbeques, festivals and summer holidays. With fun activities and (hopefully!) good weather to enjoy, taking time to think about your ears and hearing will help you to make the most of the summer months without worrying about developing problems later on. Swimming is one of the best parts of a summer holiday, but you need to watch out for ear infections from dirty water. ‘Swimmer’s ear’ is a common infection that causes ear pain, itchiness and some temporary hearing loss. Frequent exposure to water can irritate the ear canal and make it more vulnerable to inflammation. Usually these infections are cleared up easily with antibiotic drops, but if you swim regularly and your ear canal is often exposed to water, you may find that the infection returns. If you like to surf or do other water sports in the summer, you may also be at risk of ‘surfer’s ear’. This is where cold water causes bony growths to develop inside the ear canal, which over time blocks the ears and reduces hearing. If the problem becomes severe, you may need surgery to correct it.

Festival season is another great part of the summer, but your hearing could be at risk when listening to very loud music. Some noise levels at concerts can reach 120dB – the equivalent to a jet plane taking off! At this level, your hearing could be permanently damaged within minutes. If you have ever noticed ringing or buzzing in your ears after a gig it could be a sign of noise damage. These noises and muffled hearing are usually temporary, but over time you could live with constant tinnitus and permanent hearing loss. Our customised plugs for noise protection are a great option for listening to live music without risking your hearing. The filter allows for all frequencies to be reduced equally, so the sound quality will stay exactly the same, just with the effect of turning down the volume. By wearing protection, you reduce your risk of noise damage and make sure that you can continue to enjoy music for years to come.

To keep doing the activities you love and prevent the risk of ear conditions, customised swim plugs could be the answer. At Aston Hearing, we take an impression of your ear canal and make plugs to fit your unique shape. These are comfortable and durable, and stop water from getting into the ear, minimising your risk of swimmer’s and surfer’s ear.

With the majority of ear conditions, prevention is better than a cure, and by simply taking time to think about protection you can continue to enjoy all the summer offers with healthy ears and hearing. To find out more or book a consultation for customised plugs, please call 01494 733840 or email hear@astonhearing.co.uk. WWW.ASTONHEARING.CO.UK

Midsomer Walks Tall in Thame Thame is one of the most frequently used filming locations for the popular ITV series Midsomer Murders. It regularly features as Causton or as one of the many villages in ‘Midsomer County’. Midsomer Murders is still going strong after 20 years with regular screenings in the UK and round the world. Sarah Osborne of Tourism Angles, Midsomer tourism specialists, says, ‘Midsomer Murders is watched by 6.5 million people in the UK and millions more in over 100 countries. It’s one of our biggest TV exports - people see the show on TV and want to come and visit the beautiful towns and villages of Midsomer.’ Many Thame landmarks have been featured, including the Town Hall, Market House, Rumsey’s Chocolaterie, the Swan, Black Horse, and Spread Eagle hotels. Thame’s cricket ground and Prebendal

Exclusive Competition 58

House were filmed recently for further episodes. New since May are weekly Midsomer walking tours of Thame, taking in many of the filming locations, led by specially trained Midsomer guides. Tony Long, tour coordinator, said, ‘These new tours developed from a tour originally created by David Dodds of Thame Museum. They’re being held under the auspices of 21st Century Thame, an organisation bringing local businesses, community groups and councils together to keep Thame vibrant, and follow a successful Midsomer Workshop held last year, which recommended promotional ideas to develop Midsomer tourism. Tony continued, ‘The tours last about an hour and take place weekly between May and October, alternating between Saturdays at 2.30pm and Wednesdays at 11.00am. They start from inside Thame Museum (79 High Street, Thame, OX9 3AE), one of the filming locations. These tours will add a new facet to tourism locally, attracting more visitors from the UK and overseas to our historic town.’ Tickets cost £7.50 each and may be purchased online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/thamemidsomer. Alternatively, simply turn up on the day. The tours are being run by volunteers and part of the proceeds goes to Thame Museum and other charitable causes. We have 3 pairs of tickets up for grabs, so if you would like a chance to go along to one of the tours, please answer the following question correctly:

Where do the Midsomer tours start from? Email your answer, along with your name and address to Steph at villageview@live.co.uk by Thursday 10th August 2017.

Hearing Dogs

for Deaf People sponsor pup Romeo is nearly there… but not quite. As you know, having followed Romeo’s journey, he is a bright little dog whom everyone loves. However, he needs a bit more time to mature. What we’re finding is that if somethhing unexpected happpens – a door slammingg, a truck apppearing from nowhere – he can be start rtled annd take a shorrt while to compose himself. It would be a pity to lose so much potential. So, his traiiner Helen is giving him more experiences of ttyypiccal daily life. This includes hospital appointments, shhopping centres, going in lifts and so on. “He’s a lovely little man”, Helen says. “He is choc-full of charm. We just need to make sure he is

happy, every day, in every situation.” So, for Romeo, it’s more of the same until we’re confident that he’s confident. Rest assured we will tell you when Romeo has completed his journey. Between then and now, it’s a case of giving him time to grow into the dog we really believe he can become. Summer Gardening This is the time of the year when a gardener can sit back a little and enjoy the rewards of all the hard work carried out in the Spring. The planting has been done, everything is blooming and the vegetables are ready for the table. Yes, you can relax a little - but not too much, there are still lots of jobs to do to ensure your garden continues to look a picture. The most obvious task is to water. Even if the temperature is relatively low and the sun is hiding away behind the clouds, at this time of year you must make sure your plants don’t dry out. More often than not it’s the breeze that can be the problem. Hanging baskets are especially vulnerable to a dry breeze, even if you have added water retaining gel to the compost prior to planting, you really must water them at least once a day to prevent the plants suffering. If we do get a prolonged warm, dry spell, your plants will benefit from a dressing of mulch. Apply a mulch immediately after watering, this will keep the moisture in the bed around the roots and really help the cause. Mulching also helps to prevent weeds taking over. You only have to turn your back on the garden for a few days, and the weeds will invade! They will be everywhere - so keep a close eye on things, weeding little and often is the key to it. Once you have won a battle with the weeds, again, apply a mulch. Your lawn also needs keeping an eye on, at this time of year it’s preferable to mow at leeast once a week - don’t let the grass get too lonng then cut it back very short, this will damage itt. If the summer does become a real scorcher, it’s best to set youur mower to a higher setting to leavve the grass a litttle longer then you normally wouldd.

76

If you have recently turfed a lawn, keeep the newly laid turves as moist as possible. A reguular sprinnkler or hose session is a must to sttop the grasss from drying out. As well as weeds, this iss the time the garden pests are at their busiest. Prrevention is betterr than cure with aphids and catterpillars etc - but if you’re not a fan of using chem micals in the garden and you didn’t apply any anti bug mixture earlieer in the year, it’s not too o late to do battle witth the pests. There are a nuumber of organic, pett safe products on the markeet these days to keep your plants bug free. Vegetaables are prone to attaccks from not only buugs andd pests but birds andd slugs too. Again there are safe slug pellets avaiilable, and netting your cabbages and otther brassicas and fruit will keep them safe from m any aerial interferennce! Happy garrdening, see you soonn,

Simon, Alison,Edith theJack Russell andall at AskettNurseries.

Lungworm – Should we be worried?

The growing spread of reported cases adds to the evidence that lungworm is endemic throughout much of the UK and continues to pose a significant threat to dogs. Lungworm m (Angiostrongylus vasorrum) infection, when picked upp by our pet dogs, results in a number of different sympptoms including breathing difficulties, lack of energy, co oughing and persistennt bleeding. However, the clinnical signs can be varied and so ome dogs may appear healthy in the early stages of infection. Infection is acquired by coming into contact with slugs and snails

or thheiir sliime, which carry the lunggworrm larvae. Dogs eat these common garden creattures, either deliberately or acccidentally in grass or undeergrowth, drinking from pudddles or outdoor water bow wls, or picking them up m their toys. from Prevention must be monthly. Treatment every three months leaves your dog unprotected, risking disease and even death. This is why vets are encouraging monthly lunggworm preventative treatm ment to avoid the tragedy of losing an animal. Prevention which stops larval shedding in dogs faeces will also help to limit the geographical spread of the disease.

of lungworm (Aelurostrongylus abstrusus). Speak to your vet about the types of prevention available. Dog owners can check the risk in their area by looking at the map of real time reported cases, by visiting www.lungworm.co.uk Dr Mandy Elgin BVMS MRCVS

The Comedy Triple Bill

on Sunday 23rd July at 7.45pm The Comedy Triple Bill from the Baroque Theatre Company features three short plays in one hilarious evening. 1. Last Tango in Little Grimley written by David Tristram, one of the UK’s most popular and respected playwrights. Membership of the local amateur dramatic society has dwindled drastically so time for dramatic action. “There’s only one thing that sells tickets these days” argues the Chairwoman. “Sex!” But how will the locals react to the promise of a sizzling sex comedy? 2. A Jolly Sinister Jape by writer Elliot Strange, is a pastiche 1920’s thriller with a plot that defies description. This is Famous Five fun for adults as Stubby, Ophelia, Biffy and Fatty find themselves trapped in a mysterious house during a thunderstorm. 3. David Tristram’s Last Panto in Little Grimley, a sequel to Last Tango in Little Grimley. Last Panto features the same incompetent characters. The society members tackle the Christmas Pantomime with predictable riotous results. It’s Dick Whittington...but not as you know it! The cast features Baroque Theatre Company founder and actress Claire Bibby from Kent, Plymouth born Patricia Derrick, Talitha Willsea from Norwich, and Hampshire born Sally Blouet who makes her Baroque Theatre Company debut.

Lost For Words...?

Local Poet Helps Raise Funds For Local Charity When you need to write a special greeting in a card or perhaps make a speech at a family occasion it is extremely important that you say something that is both memorable and distinctive. Sometimes the standard run-ofthe-mill salutations are too trite and formulaic. So why not get someone to write something bespoke and unique - that perhaps will be remembered and cherished for some time? “I first started to write poems in birthday cards that we sent to our six grandchildren,” said Monks Risborough resident, Jeff Galatin. “Not only did they get a carefully selected card, but also a handwritten greeting that was very personal to them - with a touch of humour and a big pinch of love!” Over the years the number of recipients of these poems have grown, first with his own children’s cards and then his first challenge, the ‘Father of the Bride’ speech at his daughter, Polly’s wedding. “I didn’t want to make the usual boring speech so I wrote a poem. It was emotional both writing it and saying it on the day, but everyone seemed to like it. So, I’ve kept on writing poems!” said Jeff. He has just written one for his 13 year old granddaughter to perform at an afternoon event for senior citizens on the theme ‘Young and Old’, which definitely made an impression on the audience. And also one for his 11 year old granddaughter who has just had a brace fitted on her teeth!

Jeff will take a brief from a client and write a poeem that promises to deliver everything that is waanted to give the right message. “My fees are not expensive as I take a very responsible view of whaat the words should relay” said Jeff. And, as an added bonus, Jeff will givve 25 percennt of his fee to a local charity - Child Beereeaveemeent U.K K. - who are based in Saunderton. They offeer suppport to families and educate professionaalss when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying, orr wheen a child is facing bereavement. 84

Local poet, Jeff Galatin, with Ruth Sanger of Child Bereavement UK

“We are so grateful to Jeff for choosing to support Child Bereavement UK through his exciting new venture, Poetry Emotion. As a charity which supports families at a local and national level, we rely on the generosity of the local community, and love to hear new and interesting ways in which to fundraise. We wish Jeff every success, and through his generosity we will be abble to o help families to rebuild their lives aftfter the devastation of child bereavemennt,”ssaid Ruth Sanger, Senior Fundraising & Communicatiions Officer (www.childbereavem mentuk.org). So birthdays, christeninggs, engagementss, weddings, anniversaries, eulogiess, epitaphs, graduatio ons, sporting achievemennts, new jobs, presenntations, retirement etc. are all occasions for whiich Jeff could write an apt and suuitable poem. He hass called his venture ‘Poetry Emotion’ and can be contacted on galatin@live.co.uuk Being stuck foor words can be a bind. If the right ones don’t come to mindd Annniversary, Thank You, Weddingg or Birthdayl You neeed to find what’s best to say On a card or making a toast Especially if you are the host Express your feelings with new flair Just to show how much you care A life remembered - so much to recall Loving sentiments on ears to fall That soften the tone of solemn silence And lighten hearts from tearful absence Memories, thanks and congratulations Messages for all celebrations Words that reach out with the deftest touch So use the ones that mean so much To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk

To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl. Add the butter and rub in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, add the egg and water, then stir with a knife until the mixture begins to stick together.

2.

Gather the dough with one hand, turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for a few seconds until smooth. Flatten into a round, wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes.

3. 4.

Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up.

Roll out about two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface to the thickness of a one pound coin and use to line a 23cm round pie dish.

5.

Toss the peaches in a bowl with the sugar and cornflour then pile into the pastry case. Roll out the rest of the pastry to a 20cm circle and use a lattice pastry roller to cut slashes in the pastry (see tip).

6.

Brush around the edge of the pastry case with a little water then drape the pastry circle over the filling, pulling it gently to create the lattice effect. Press the pastry edges together to seal and trim off any excess pastry.

7.

Glaze the pastry with milk, then place on the hot baking sheet in the oven and bake for 35-45 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar.
