ATASCADERO — The creative work relationship between the legendary Cher and local artistic director and choreographer Doriana Sanchez started back in 1987 when Cher saw Sanchez in the classic ‘80s film “Dirty Dancing.” Cher asked for dance lessons for a music video, and the film’s choreographer,

tic director to help promote her new holiday album “Christmas,” which dropped back in October. “We are on a promo tour for her new album, which is so fabulous,” Sanchez said. “It is the new soundtrack of the holiday season, for sure. There is something for everyone on there.” The album, simply titled “Christmas,” features collaborations between Cher and

ATASCADERO — The El Camino Homeless Organization’s (ECHO) North County Turkey Trot was back for its fifth year, and what a year it was. Not only did the Turkey Trot raise more money than ever before, but more community members than the organization has ever seen showed up on Thanksgiving morning (Thursday, Nov. 23) at 9 a.m. to the 5k fun run/walk at Atascadero Lake Park. “It was an incredible day. Our mascot, Mr. Turkey, was there, leading us in some stretches and some amazing dance moves. He really winged it,” said ECHO’s Director of Operations and Development Austin Solheim. “We had so many amazing donors and sponsors, and the community showed up in force. It was just amazing to put on such a wonderful event for our community. We had over 800 individuals from the community show up.”

Not only did community members from all over the North County come out in support of ECHO by participating in the 5K, they also competed in the yearly costume contest. Families, co-workers, furry friends, and more dressed up in their best Thanksgiving and turkey-themed outfits for all to see. Solheim said that they always look forward to seeing what the groups come up with. “We’ve had this group that’s

been showing up every year for Turkey Trot, and they showed up as the Thanksgiving meal,” added Solheim. “Every person played a different role. One person was the turkey, one person was the gravy, and one person was the pie. We even had a fork, a spoon, and a knife there, too. And it was four generations of this family, and it was about 15 family members that all dressed up as the dish and all the sides for our Turkey Trot.”

On top of the Turkey Trot having a record-breaking turnout, ECHO also raised more money for both the Paso Robles and Atascadero ECHO locations than ever before. “We actually raised over $90,000,” Solheim said. “It wouldn’t have been possible without one of our amazing sponsors, the BLoved Foundation, and they actually matched all of our community-based donations. NORTH COUNTY — Paso Robles City Park was brighter than ever Friday night on Nov. 24 for the 37th Annual Light up Downtown and 12th annual Lights of Hope fundraiser. Supporting the Cancer Support Community California Central Coast (CSC-CCC), the City of Paso Robles joined to bring in additional lights full of color, snowflakes and icicles to create a winter wonderland in the heart of downtown. The event that officially kicks off the holiday season in Paso Robles was welcomed with a park filled with people to sing carols. This year, the Paso Robles City decided they wanted to join the Paso Robles Main Street Associa-

tion in bringing more lights to the City Park. “I’ve had the privilege of attending the downtown lighting ceremonies for a couple decades now,” said City Manager Ty Lewis on the inception of the lighting plan.

“After becoming city manager and attending last year’s event, I talked with Freda Berman (our public works director) about how we might improve. We thought about some of the other communities that have some pretty fantastic lighting

events and hatched the idea to light the park better than ever.” Bigger and brighter was certainly the theme for Friday night as the Main Street Association ran out of candles that were passed out to the crowds.

Second attempt to recall SLO County supervisor initiated

Local citizen’s group files to recall District 2 Supervisor Bruce Gibson STAFF REPORT

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — A San Luis Obispo County Supervisor is facing a recall again. A local citizen’s group has re-filed recall papers against District 2 Supervisor Bruce Gibson after missing a crucial deadline and terminating its first recall effort. Gibson was originally served intent to recall papers on Oct. 27 from the Committee to Support the Recall of Supervisor Bruce Gibson (Committee). The Committee says it is a group comprised of “San Luis Obispo County concerned citizens and

District 2 SLO County Supervisor Bruce Gibson

forgotten taxpayers from all walks of life and party affiliations. The Committee firmly believes that a change in leadership is necessary to restore the values and integrity

of San Luis Obispo County.” The initial papers stated, “Gibson has abused his powers as a supervisor by getting rid of county administrative officer Wade Horton and replacing him with a political contributor.” The petition also accused Gibson of betraying the trust of voters by repealing the 2022 district boundaries in an effort to ensure his re-election. Gibson won re-election for the supervisor seat last year by 13 votes against contender Bruce Jones. Only a few weeks later, the intent to recall was terminated due to a missed deadline outlined in the California Elections Code. The recall proponents failed to submit two blank petition copies and proof of publication of intent

TERMINATION

within the required 10-day period following Super visor Gibson’s response to the recall filing on Oct. 31. According to a press release submitted by the County Clerk Recorder’s office, section 11042 requires the proponents of a recall effort to submit two blank copies of the petition to be circulated, along with proof of publication of intent “at least once in a newspaper of general circulation,” within 10 days of that answer. The deadline for submission was Nov. 13, but the petitioner only attempted to file the documents on Nov. 15. The recall proponents had the option to initiate a new effort — restarting from the beginning of the process — and they took it. After proof of publication of the intent to recall has been filed with

the SLO County Clerk Recorder’s Office, the Committee will have 10 days to file their proposed petition. Next comes collecting signatures. Since Gibson was elected in the former district boundary map, the petition may only be signed by voters in that boundary version of District 2. Then, only 20 percent of registered voters of that boundary is needed for the county to hold an election for the recall. San Luis Obispo County terminates interim CAO amid misconduct allegations

Nilon was hired in May with a threemonth contract; Assistant CAO Campbell to take over interim position STAFF REPORT

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — The San Luis Obispo Board of Supervisors has terminated the contract of interim County Administrative Officer (CAO) John Nilon following an investigation into allegations of improper conduct toward

women. The decision, made in a closed-session meeting, was effective immediately. Nilon, who has been serving as the interim CAO since May 1, faced accusations of violating the county’s policy against discrimination and harassment. The termination decision was based on a zero-tolerance approach towards policy violations, as emphasized by District 1 Supervisor John Peschong. “Our policy is clear and adherence to it is mandatory by all employees. The county has a zero-tolerance policy for any violations,” Peschong

stated. “The county is committed to providing a work environment where everyone is treated with respect and professionalism. We expect all employees to adhere to the policy and expect our CAO to exhibit the best judgment when dealing with employees in the workplace.” The termination was announced on Nov. 17 following a closed-session meeting that was was convened to address charges or complaints against Nilon and to determine whether disciplinary action was warr anted. Peschong, in a letter to Nilon,

explained that the decision to terminate was made after thorough consideration of all presented information. In response, Nilon released a statement, claiming to have submitted his resignation on Wednesday and dismissing the board’s decision as a “political stunt.” He asserted that no written allegations of misconduct were ever presented to him. Nilon, with 32 years of service to Kern County, where he served as the CAO for eight years until his retirement in February 2017, had a three-month contract with

San Luis Obispo County. The termination comes amid a nationwide search for a permanent replacement. Assistant County Administrative Officer Rebecca Campbell will assume the role of acting CAO until a permanent replacement is selected. The termination of Nilon is emphasized as unrelated to an ongoing investigation involving a mid-level employee from the county’s IT department. The employee in question was placed on leave earlier in the week after search warrants were executed at their home and office, part of an internal

John Nilon

county-initiated investigation focused on the potential misuse of county funds for personal purchases.

Governor announces new legislation to prevent illicit use and trafficking of xylazine Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled new legislation on Tuesday, Nov. 28, aimed at addressing the alarming increase in overdose deaths related to the illicit use of xylazine, an animal tranquilizer commonly known as “tranq.” The proposed law seeks to elevate criminal penalties for the trafficking of xylazine while exempting legitimate veterinary use to ensure proper animal care. Xylazine, with no approved human application, has been infiltrating the illicit drug supply, contributing to a surge in overdose deaths nationwide. Newsom’s legislation categorizes xylazine as a controlled substance, intensifying penalties for its illicit trafficking. However, it safeguards veterinarians’ access for authorized animal use. In Newsom’s words, “Tranq poses a unique and devastating challenge in our fight against the overdose epidemic. This legislation will help the state stay ahead and curb dealers and traffickers, while we work to provide treatment and resources for those struggling with addiction and substance abuse.” Xylazine-related deaths have more than tripled from 2020 to 2021 across the nation, with notable spikes in the northeast and west regions. Health experts underscore the dangers of xylazine, which can cause severe wounds, necrosis, and, when combined with fentanyl, lead to amputation. Suspected xylazine overdoses prompt recommendations for administering the opioid reversal agent naloxone. In addition to the proposed legislation, the California Department of Public Health issued an All Facilities Letter to guide clinicians on addressing xylazine emergence in the illicit drug supply. The California State Board of Pharmacy and the California Veterinary Medical Board alerted licensees to adhere to dangerous drug laws, emphasizing record-keeping obligations for licensees. These measures align with Newsom’s comprehensive Master Plan for Tackling the Fentanyl and Opioid Crisis, which includes expanded CalGuard-supported operations, substantial funding, and proactive efforts to raise awareness about xylazine’s threat in collaboration with healthcare partners, clinicians, and veterinarians.

quick and courageous battle with cancer. Daniel’s father moved the family to Atascadero in 1961, where he started his barbering business, Dan’s Barber Shop, which continues today. As a true local, Daniel attended Monterey Road Elementary School, Atascadero Junior High School, Atascadero High School, Cuesta College, and then graduated in 1981 from Cal Poly with a degree in Industrial Technology. In high school, Dan played football for all four years. After graduation, Daniel started his career at Vandenberg Air Force Base as part of the engineering team on the Space Shuttle program with the goal of bringing the Discovery Space Shuttle to Vandenberg for launching. He split his time

between Vandenberg and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. In 1986, the Challenger Shuttle exploded, and Daniel left the Space Shuttle program. He returned home to Atascadero and decided to start his own business. During that year, he met his future wife, Susan Phillips (Watt), on the beach, and they were married in 1987. His career began in 1986 with Farmers Insurance Group, and together, he and Susan created a successful insurance agency that is still in operation. In 1993, they welcomed their son, Daniel J. Phillips. Daniel caught the surfing bug as a teenager and never stopped. He loved and was proud of the fact that he had surfed the ROCK in Morro Bay for over 50 years and could still hold his own in the lineup. His buddies

gave him the surf moniker “MONGO” and he could be found way on the outside of the lineup. Dan is survived by his parents, Daniel and Ramona Phillips, his wife, Susan Phillips (Watt), and his son, Daniel J. Phillips. He was preceded in death by his sister, Denise L. Phillips.

t is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our mom. Belen Wilhelm was a beloved wife, mother, nana, sister, and friend to many. With her beautiful smile, warm heart, and kindness, she made all whom she met feel special. She was dedicated to her family and took much joy in being around her grandkids and great-grandkids. She always had a kind word to say, a smile that lit up

the room, and the most beautiful heart. She was such a loving person to her family and extended family that included many of our friends. We always knew how much she loved us all unconditionally. She taught us so much and we were so lucky to have her in our lives as long as we did. Belen and her husband Earl raised their family in Atascadero. They were fortunate to spend many years in

their RV enjoying retirement. During that time, they shared many great experiences while exploring the United States. She had an amazing 89 years on God’s earth. She is survived by her husband Earl, her kids Toni (& Joe), Kent, Anissa (& Scott), and Denise (& Mike), five grandsons, eight great-grandchildren, a brother and sister, and many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed.

Ephesians 4:2 Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowances for each other’s faults because of your love. John 4:11-12 Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us.

by his partner, Colleen Juarez; daughters Anne (Kris Varanelli), Christy (David Criswell), Katy (Ryan Sedgwick) and Elizabeth (David Ward); and grandchildren, Gabriel, David, Rowan, Madison, Elizabeth, Teagan, Kaden, Ethan and Hollyn. Steve grew up in Monrovia, CA. He was the eighth of nine children of Dr. Darrell “Red” Holman and Mary (Hayes) Holman. He attended Mayfield Junior School in Pasadena and Foothills Junior High School in Arcadia. As one of eight Holman boys, Steve grew up playing many sports in the family’s “lower lot.” Steve was

class president of Arcadia High School and was well-known for being a varsity athlete. Recently, he enjoyed reuniting with his class at their 50th high school reunion. Steve majored in Business Administration in 1979 from Cal Poly and was a member of Alpha Sigma fraternity. After graduating, Steve moved to Paso Robles with his wife, Janie. He began his career as a real estate agent, earning Realtor of the Year in 1990. He was known for contributing to community events including neighborhood parades, St. Rose BBQs, Pioneer Day horseshoe tournaments, and coaching

youth sports teams. He was an active member of the Paso Robles Trail Ride for over 20 years and enjoyed sharing this with his friends and family. Steve played adult softball for 35 years. Everyone knew Steve and his “laser” strong arm that could get an out from anywhere in the field. Later in life, he joined the Baker Boyz, a traveling softball team that won many championships, including the 2013 Senior Softball World Championships. Steve’s lifelong passion was backpacking in the Eastern Sierras. He loved to bring friends to the cabin on Gem Lake–his favorite place on

Earth. He loved Doc Moyles and Amanda’s Camp, and topographic maps. He counseled many fellow backpackers to stay off the trail and take the “topo lines” across the ridges. He knew the best swimming holes, where to find the golden trout, and where Ansel Adams took his iconic shots. He was always planning his next softball tournament if he wasn’t planning a backpacking trip. Steve is preceded in death by his mother and father, and his three older brothers. His funeral mass will be held at St. Rose Catholic Church on December 7th, at 11:00 with a celebration to follow.

thing, we had that support, which was pretty incredible.” The Turkey Trot, which has become a huge part of how many are celebrating Thanksgiving, will be back next Thanksgiving, for it’s sixth annual year. “It was just amazing to see that many community members come out. Not just community members but businesses, different groups, and families that just really wanted to come out and spend the day with us,” Solheim said. “It’s become such a tradition for so many people, and we just heard so much positive feedback. we just can’t wait until next year to put this event on again. It’s just really fantastic to have these amazing community members come out and participate with us.” To learn more about ECHO and all the ways they support the local community, go to echoshelter.org.

LIGHTS OF HOPE

received a winner from Los Angeles Christmas Light Installers who came out to create the “winter wonderland” display. “We elicited support from Main Street, Travel Paso, and, of course, the [Paso Robles and Templeton] Chamber of Commerce,” added Lewis. “The chamber ultimately helped sponsor the awesome Selfie Display. Overwhelmingly, our community stakeholders encouraged us to ‘own the

holidays’ and felt this was a fantastic way to draw attention to our lovely downtown while bringing some holiday cheer to our community.” Lewis says the city hopes that this new and improved light tradition will grow each year so long as they can fund it. They are currently looking at options for offering community sponsorships for the future but that will come in due time. “A big thank you to Freda Berman

and her PW team, as well as the Chamber of Commerce, Main Street, Travel Paso, and the Wine Country Alliance for their wonderful support and promotion,” he said. The Light up the Downtown event coincides with one of the Cancer Support Community California Central Coast’s (CSC) largest fundraisers of the year, Lights of Hope. While CSC did not make their fundraising goal this year, Executive Director at CSC-CCC Candice Sanders says they are still thankful for the event. “We are definitely shy of our goal, but every little bit helps, and this is a great opportunity for people to learn about cancer support community and for people to know that we are here,” she said. “It’s not just about raising the money, but it’s also about raising awareness.” The mission of CSC-CCC is to help those affected by cancer and their loved ones. They offer support through numerous programs “so that no one faces cancer alone,” according

NBC, and Warner Brothers records,” Sanchez said of getting ready for the performance. “I worked on the creative concept with Macy’s, then her [Cher’s] manager, and I pitched it to her [Cher]. Once we had her approval, it was like being shot out of a cannon. I did my pre-production from here at Class Act Dance in Paso, with Oscar Gutierrez, Jonathan Ritter, and Jenevieve Crossett as original choreography assistants. “At that same time, I was going in and out of Atascadero to Cher’s house in LA to finalize the performance details with her and do some rehearsals. We brought in the St. Johns Dance team from NY, who were the world champion hip hop team, and also the beautiful Black Haus Creative team. So in all, with Cher’s four dancers, we had 60 people in the performance.” This year, the parade was the high-

est-rated it’s ever been, with 28.5 million viewers tuning in to watch. And everyone got to see Sanchez’s choreography and Cher’s much-loved vocals. “The most fun and something I will never forget is our big blocking day [for Macy’s]. Our only blocking day,” Sanchez said. “It happened in the nighttime, and they only closed the street for a few hours. We only had like 45 minutes to block the entire performance. That is with all 12 cameras, lighting, set pieces, etc. There was a huge downpour, and it rained freezing cold rain the whole entire time. All 60 of us were soaking wet and freezing, but we were dancing in the rain and having the best time. “This whole experience has been a huge blessing to everyone involved. Our only mission for this performance was to spread love, light, and joy. The world needs music, art, and

dance now more than ever to help lift people’s hearts, so I feel we used our art for good. The best part is that Cher is happy, and that makes me happy.” Right after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the whole company, including Cher and Sanchez, headed to Germany, where Cher performed on “Wetten, dass.. ?” After that, they headed to London, England, where they will be through early December. There, Cher will perform at “The Graham Norton Show,” “The Royal Variety Show” for the Royal Family, and “Strictly Come Dancing,” which is the original version of “Dancing with the Stars.” “We have had so much fun on this [promo tour],” Sanchez said. “Super hard work because the traveling is crazy. Lots of rehearsals in different countries and time zones, but all of it is a true blessing, and she [Cher] is one of the closest people to me in

life. I love her and am very grateful to her for all of our years of creating together.” You can watch Cher’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade performance at youtube.com/watch?v=pzJltQjuibA.

on how agencies comply with current state regulations. In June of this year, the county appointed a committee to revisit joining back into IWMA as a member. In early Oct., the IWMA Board approved a path forward for San Luis Obispo County to rejoin, and later that month, that county approved the item presented to the City Council at the meeting. “All the other member agencies of

IWMA are tasked with going before their elected officials with this same agreement, and it’s been discussed both at the IWMA board and at the county. [They] reviewed that resolution and recommend the council to allow the county to essentially come back into IWMA,” added Betz. Originally, San Luis Obispo had five voting seats on the IWMA, but as proposed in the new agreement,

that has been reduced to one seat and one vote. Current representative to IWMA, Councilmember Charles Bourbeau, stated that he would expect and hope, but not guarantee, that the fiscal impact of rejoining next year’s rate, which is currently 4.4 percent, would drop again next year. “There should be, not only no cost to our residents, but there should

be some small financial gain in the future if everything works out, and everything has been working out very well,” added Bourbeau. Bourbeau then made the motion to approve the agreement, with a second from Mayor Pro Tem Susan Funk. The motion passed unanimously. The next Atascadero City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 6 p.m.

Some people arrived around 3 p.m. to claim their seats near the park gazebo where City Councilmembers and Mrs. Claus led the crowd in carols. “I had been to the tree lighting in previous years but this was spectacular,” said newly appointed Councilmember Sharon Roden. “I love Christmas, so this kind of event hits home for me. So many turned out for the occasion, and in every direction I looked, there was a sea of smiles and candlelight. The Grinch outdid himself this year and was a kid’s favorite. A big thank you to all those who made this event possible. And a special thank you to Norma Moye, who continues to be an inspiration to us all for her hard work and love of our town.” Lewis explained the process in getting the lights to the park. After Berman and her team drafted proposals and sent out bids, they

Stevie Wonder, Darlene Love, Michael Buble, Tyga, and Cyndi Lauper. Not only does it have brand new original holiday tracks, but it also has covers of some of your holiday favorites, and it’s one of the best holiday albums I’ve heard in a very long time. The promotional tour for the album started with a performance at the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting that later premiered on TV on Wednesday, Nov. 29, and a spellbinding performance of Cher’s single “DJ Play a Christmas Song” at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Both performances had Sanchez at the helm as artistic director. “There are so many parts to this machine and this promo tour. For Macy’s, there was the Macy’s team,

to Sanders The nonprofit still has three small trees and four large trees available for sponsorship. However, Sanders stresses that any donation of any size is appreciated. New this year is a tree in the center of the park has been dedicated to those lost to and affected by cancer. One of which that was on many people’s minds Friday night was the late Mayor Steve Martin, who passed away on Monday, Aug. 14, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. “Mayor Martin was in our thoughts and definitely on everyone’s mind this year during the celebration,” added Sanders. Turning on the lights is just the beginning of Christmas festivities in Paso Robles. On Saturday, Dec. 2, the 62nd Annual Christmas Lights Parade will bring the arrival of the big man in red and light up downtown Paso Robles once again. Specs by Kyla Takes on Paris and attends eyewear trade show

Eyewear owner and enthusiast explores SILMO Trade Show, Fashion Week, and more By CHRISTIANNA MARKS

ATASCADERO — Atascadero’s very own eyewear specialist, Kyla Skinner (Specs by Kyla), headed out on an international trip to Paris to attend the SILMO Paris eyewear trade show. Her excursion included visiting brands she carries in her own shop, people-watching on the streets of Paris, and even having some run-ins with Fashion Week, as she was there from Sept. 28 through Oct. 6. “I’ve always wanted to go to this trade show in Paris, specifically,” Skinner said. “I’ve never traveled in my life either, so it was just fun to have this be a reason to go for my business and then also experience traveling and seeing different parts of the world.” The SILMO Paris trade show is an international trade fair that features everything optics and eyewear, so it only makes sense that Skinner, who owns Specs by Kyla, would travel halfway across the world to dive into all the fabulous frames

and ingenuity packed into two huge convention centers. “There were two buildings full of tons of frames and lenses and everything that is related to my field. It was super fun,” added Skinner. “Most of my brands were there, so I was able to look at their new releases and just did a lot of walking around.” While there, Skinner acquired a new frame line, Masunaga, from Japan while also creating a wish list of lines to add in the future. She also ordered new frames from the existing lines that she already carries. “It’s really fun to be able to see things in person vs. just looking at websites and to be able to touch and feel and try things on and see the quality of the materials and meet the people behind it too. They are taking pride in their brand, and so it’s fun to see the personal connections behind the companies,” added Skinner. While Skinner was trying on the newest eyewear in Paris, it was also Fashion Week, which created the perfect option for optimal people-watching. “I didn’t feel out of place, oddly. I don’t know, I

felt good,” Skinner said about being in Paris during some of its biggest fashion moments of the year. On top of the days taken up by the trade show, Skinner, who was joined by Atascadero native Zoe Zappas, also explored the streets of Paris, mostly on foot. “We ended up walking like 50 miles, and we saw the Eiffel Tower,” she said. “I was like, I should probably see that, but we saw it from a distance. We just walked and walked and walked, and it was so fun to see the style there. I could have probably just people-watched the whole time.” The girls also made a little side trip over to Antwerp, Belgium, while Skinner was in Europe. It ended up being a last-minute addition that brought even more eyewear fun into the trip. “One of my frame companies, Theo, is based there, and they invited us to come and did a whole two-day experience in their headquarters. They did a class for one full day of that, and we went to tour their shops there. they also have an archive in their basement, and it was like thousands of vintage frames from the ‘80s and ‘90s, from when they started,” continued Skinner. “I was able to look through all of those. That was a

EVENTS

Embrace the cozy moments: Atascadero’s December delights await! What is happening in Atascadero this December By Kyla Skinner Guest Contributor

ATASCADERO — Oh, December, what a busy month for most of us! Let’s not forget to just take in the quiet moments too, to cuddle in with our families and pets, warm indoors during the long dark e ve n i n g s . Wa t c h movies, bake, light candles…ahhhh…I write this article in advance it’s actually still hot outside, but writing this makes me so excited for all the cozy! I know your calendar is full already, but as always, there are some super fun events planned for us downtown. Side note: I recently traveled to Europe to an optical trade show, and while I had the most amazing time and absolutely fell in love with Paris, especially, I was also so grateful to come home to my life here in Atascadero. What is the saying, “Create a life you don’t need to vacation from”? That is honestly what I could say as I flew into SLO and drove home to Atascadero. I was grateful for our quiet town, our beautiful rolling hills, our

majestic oak trees. For my family. For my business. For the supportive community and for our City who, works hard to plan fun events, to collaborate with us business owners, and for my fellow supportive tribe of business owners. Sappy, but I always am–I’m sure you’ve noticed, and my heart swelled to realize this is my life, and I love it. Paris was dreamy, but my real life is too. Atascadero, I love you! Okay, sappy ramble over. Onward to events for December! First thing, starting off the month right, we have Light Up the Downtown combined with the Holiday Sip & Shop. Enjoy an evening of community entertainment, Santa, complimentary Model-A-Firetruck & Hay Rides, hot chocolate, and more! The event begins at 5:30 p.m., December 1, in the Sunken Gardens and continues throughout the Downtown with the First Friday Holiday Sip & Shop. Shops will be open late, and wine and beer tastings will be available from participating merchants. A great way to enjoy shopping and strolling Downtown along with the festivities of the season! For Sip &

Shop ticket information, visit atascaderochamber.org or Call (805) 466-2044. One of my favorite new businesses, The Pottery on Entrada, is already moving into a bigger space! Go check out their new digs at 5800 El Camino Real. They have created an amazing community of pottery lovers, classes for beginners and experienced artists. They will be open to shop for handmade gifts on December 2 and 3; pottery makes the best gifts! For more details, please email hello@thepotteryatascadero.com. Head out of town a few miles to The Fableist Wine Company, technically in Templeton, but I’m sneaking it in here as this event last year was truly magical. A wreath making workshop will be held Tuesday, December 5 at 5:30 p.m. It is an idyllic spot, a beautiful farmhouse nestled in the vineyards. You’ll cozy up with a table full of local foraged greens, the smell of bay leaves fills the air, and you will be guided by one of my favorite florist friends, the talented Kr ysti Jerdin, to create a beautiful wreath that will last all winter. Tickets are $65 and include a glass of wine and

treats. Call (805) 246-1431 or visit fableistwine.com. See you there! December 8 (5 to 9 p.m.) is one of my favor ites, Winter Wonderland, complete with REAL snow! (Snow sponsored by the Kiwanis, thank you!) I loved hurtling down the slope on a sled with my daughter last year; we may have crashed into a hay bale at the end. Cold red noses and fingers are warmed up by hot chocolate and other treats offered by over 50 vendors here for this event. Centered around Sunken Gardens and the entire downtown, this year’s event includes bungee jumps, obstacle courses, community entertainment, Santa and Mrs. Claus, and more! I’m also always mesmerized by watching them MAKE the snow. I love sneaking out of my shop to watch t h e m on Pa l m a turn it into a literal wonderland. If you are around earlier in the day, stop to watch them make it from thousands of blocks of ice and a blower. Fascinating. Thanks for reading, and thanks for supporting my little eyeglass shop in my little corner of downtown Atascadero! I appreciate you!

very inspiring experience to meet with them and to learn their story. They were very much about building a relationship and a connection with us and also building [relationships] with clients that purchase their frames. It was very much personal. They tell stories around their frames and have it become more of an experience.” Skinner said she learned a lot and felt like Theo’s company culture resonated with her and the way she runs Specs. She added that seeing the fashion and traveling over to Paris and Antwerp definitely had a lasting effect on her eyewear selections and how she wants to run her shop in the future. “I think travel opens our eyes to culture, to setting goals, and enthusiasm about what we do at home,” she said. “I came home feeling very enthusiastic and inspired in little ways that I want to implement.” While Skinner was away, she said that she got a ton of support for her local clients. “I just felt so grateful that my business has survived and thrived and to be able to go to this amazing place and to come home to Atascadero. It just felt good,” she concluded.

Applause Children’s Theater captivates audience with performance of ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ Annual show delights sold-out crowd, showcasing young talents and community spirit By Mike Pirozzi Guest Contributor

PASO ROBLES — Applause Children’s Theater (ACT) knocks it out of the park once again with its annual performance of “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” With an uncanny knack for casting and the ability to turn young children into high-quality performers, “Charlie Brown” delighted the audience. The crowd was bustling as the preshow raffle and prizes were handed out. It certainly came as no surprise to this writer that opening night, Nov. 17, was once again sold out. The quality and effort expended by ACT into these shows is unparalleled in the North County. This year’s show was directed by Vikky Mullin and Junior Director Madison McCrain. “It was an incredible experience to be able to be the junior director, and I’ve honestly found it amazing to watch these growing actor’s abilities,” Madison said. Wanda Kennard and Nora Glunz (Lucy) both agreed, saying “We like playing a kind of sassy character and doing all the dances.” Both Sid Kennard and Oliver Edsall played the role of Charlie Brown and said, “It’s been a lot of fun having so many lines and learning all of the dances. Also, Miss Vikky teaches so well that it ends up being a really joyful experience.” One of the most impressive things about ACT perfor-

The 2023 Charlie Brown Christmas cast is shown. Photo courtesy of Applause Children’s Theater

mances is the amount of additional legwork that’s involved in turning out high-quality performances with limited resources for materials. The ability to put on a show of this quality without an unlimited bank account for props and stagehands in one of the things that certainly makes ACT stand out from the crowd. You can feel that their hearts are into the show more than just throwing dollars at it. The crowd was in stitches as Lucy doled out her unconventional brand of straightforward psychiatric advice to Charlie Brown from the psychiatrist booth. Lucy also made a stellar performance while delighting the crowd with her song to Santa about her Christmas wish list that was asking for none other than real estate, while Snoopy (Quinn Newman) and Woodstock (Navy Newman) danced to the jazzy song, “Suppertime.” With a variety of unique Christmas songs added to the traditional Charlie Brown story, it was a perfect way to usher in the holidays. Hot chocolate and Christmas cook-

ies were even distributed as a thank you for attending at the conclusion of each show. There you have it folks: a short wrap-up of another outstanding performance by Applause Children’s Theater. The 23-child cast was rounded out with Sid Kennard, Oliver Edsall, Nora Glunz, Wanda Kennard, Rudd Larson, Evelyn Walla, Navy Newman, Quinn Newman, Aaron Faulstich, Callahan Irvin, Kayla Bournonville, Chloe Bournonville, Jackson Hamm, Hannah Thompson, Delaney Dineen, Aurora Andahl, Isabella Narelli, Helen Tracy, Sofia Nino, Analie Solis, Gwen Sturgeon, Emily Stimson, and Jackson Dineen. Be sure to stay up-to-date on future performances from ACT, and also support the local community theater by attending the shows. ACT appreciates the community support for these performances, and also the outpouring of time from all the community members who volunteer to help make these performances possible. Giving Tuesday prompts support for Paso Robles Youth Arts Center Over the past year, Youth Arts has offered 200 classes covering a diverse range of artistic expressions STAFF REPORT

PASO ROBLES — Paso Robles Youth Arts Center (Youth Arts) is commemorating its success in providing free arts education to 500 San Luis Obispo (SLO) county youth this year. As the world celebrated Giving Tuesday on Nov. 28, Youth Arts is urging continued support. Over the past year, Youth Arts has offered 200 classes covering a diverse range of artistic expressions, including urban dance, video production, theatre, voice camp, culinary arts, and mosaic. The initiative has been made possible through the generous support of donors, contributing to the cultural enrichment of the community. Arts education has proven to be pivotal for children’s cognitive de velopment, particularly in times of uncertainty and upheaval. Youth Arts serves as a crucial outlet for the mental well-being of kids and teens, countering the prevailing mental health crisis among youth. Former student Mariah Higuera, a testament to the impact of Youth Arts, highlights the profound change it brought to her life. Starting as a shy 5-year-old, Mariah

found a nurturing environment at Youth Arts that fostered her growth into a resilient, well-rounded adult. Now an instructor, she imparts the same inspiration to a new generation through contemporary dance. This Giving Tuesday, Youth Arts aims to raise $35,000 to expand its mission and reach more children. The funds will be utilized to maintain free and inclusive classes, ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to experience the positive impact of arts education. Founded 25 years ago by artist and philanthropist Donna Berg, Youth Arts has been a beacon for over 10,000 students. The organization’s commitment to providing a safe space for children, regardless of socioeconomic status, has resulted in numerous success stories. Youth Arts not only fosters artistic talent but also instills confidence, resilience, and life skills vital for navigating adulthood. As the holiday season approaches, Youth Arts expresses gratitude to its supporters and encourages the community to contribute to the continued success of this transformative initiative. Donations can be made at donorbox.org/youth-artsdonate. For more information about Paso Robles Youth Arts Center, visit pryoutharts.org.

About: The Atascadero Greyhound Foundation has been serving the Atascadero community for more than 20 years, gradually adding more events that serve its mission. We have grown, and continue to give because of the generous donors, sponsors and participants of our events. Our events are a benefit to the community in healthy activity — either athletically, musically, educationally, or in the fight against addiction.

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before

you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. (2) GIBSON has (a) exhibited contempt for property owners who live on fixed incomes and rely on the protections of Proposition 13; and (b) favored the interests of Sacramento over San Luis Obispo County voters. (3) GIBSON has violated the Ralph M. Brown Act on multiple occasions obfuscating transparency and suppressing public comment. (4) GIBSON was silent about (a) the bribery, extortion, and corruption of deceased Supervisor and political ally, Adam Hill, as well as (b) the County’s mushrooming county employee pension debt, totaling nearly $1 billion. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if ap-

plicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 800-280-2832 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this internet website http:// www.qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-21895542-CL. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. First, 48 hours after the date of the trustee sale, you can call 800-280-2832, or visit this internet website http://www.qualityloan. com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-21895542-CL to find the date on which the trustee’s sale was held, the amount of the last and highest bid, and the address of the trustee. Second, you must send a written notice of intent to place a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 15 days after the trustee’s sale. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. NOTICE TO PROSPECTIVE OWNER-OCCUPANT: Any prospective owner-occupant as defined in Section 2924m of the California Civil Code who is the last and highest bidder at the trustee’s sale shall provide the required affidavit or declaration of eligibility to the auctioneer at the trustee’s sale or shall have it delivered to QUALITY LOAN SERVICE CORPORATION by 5 p.m. on the next business day following the trustee’s sale at the address set forth in the below signature block. ave you ever heard anyone challenge a request by saying, “Only one person has ever walked on water.” Not true. If you have spent any time in church, or even Sunday School as a child, you should be familiar with the story of Jesus walking on water. Do you know who else walked on water? Peter. Sermons on this passage from Matthew 14 have been preached many times over. There is quite a lot to unpack in the 11 verses that cover this story. A whole bunch of life lessons and spiritual nuggets. I’m only going to dive into two. The story immediately follows the feeding of the 5000. After the

expect a real gully washer, and if he predicted rain, it would be so hot the chickens would pluck themselves. I’d completely forgotten about the weatherman when one day, out of the blue, he called, acting like we were long-lost buddies. It seems the guy had been a victim of multiple career disorders because since I’d last seen him, he’d been a realtor, a telemarketer, a pet food taster, a portable toilet cleaner, and a taxi cab driver. He’d come back home to take advantage “of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sell a product that was going to change the world.” He sounded so excited I wondered if someone hadn’t spiked his five hour energy drink. And what, was this revolutionary product, you might ask? Solar panels! He explained that he was going to be in the area making appointments and wanted to make sure I didn’t miss out on the greatest thing since the Segway®. I told him I was busy for the next few months but he showed up on my doorstep anyway. After getting his proverbial foot in the door he told me that if I signed up for solar panels on my house that the state would pay for all

the labor and all I had to do was buy the panels. But I must act quickly because the offer expired soon. I’d been wondering why I was seeing a host of new solar installations recently but I just figured that the panels were the latest status symbol and a way to say that you were greener than your neighbor. I told the weatherman that there were five reasons why I didn’t want solar panels. First of all, I didn’t want anyone putting holes in my roof that might leak. Secondly, I didn’t want to disfigure the look of my house. Most of the installations I’d seen made the roofs look like the scoreboard at a major league baseball game. I expect them to flash an instant replay at any minute. Also, I knew that most, if not all, of the panels were made in China and I’d recently vowed not to buy anything made by communists or by slave labor. I’ve also always had a deep distrust of the government, especially when they start giving stuff away. Getting subsidized by the government to put panels on your house just seemed to me like shoplifting for rich people. Finally I said, “I might be

cleanup of that gigantic picnic, Jesus sends His disciples into a boat right away as He dismisses the crowd. He then goes up a mountain to pray and have some alone time with His Father. He spent the rest of the day there. By the time night came, the boat had already drifted pretty far out and then the wind started kicking up making the boat quite rocky. It’s safe to assume that the disciples were getting a little anxious and wondering how Jesus was going to catch up with them. Somewhere super early in the morning between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m., Jesus comes sauntering up on the waves towards the boat. Seeing this incredulous sight, the guys started freaking out and screaming that it was a ghost! But Jesus being the comforting Savior that He is tells them to rest assured and not to be afraid that it was only Him. Peter then calls out to Jesus, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”

Jesus says, “Come!” Peter gets out of the boat and walks on water towards Jesus. Before I move on — whose idea was it for Peter to walk on water? Hearing this story so often a lot of people immediately say it was Jesus who called Peter. But that is not what scripture says. It clearly shows us that Peter asked to come out there! Do we dare ask the Lord for something supernatural? Do you have the boldness to ask the Lord for that miracle? If He responds with “Let’s go for it!” He is able to meet you there! “But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, ‘You of little faith, why did you doubt?’” Matt. 14:30-31. Peter was walking on water towards Jesus; he had his sights on the Master. As soon as he started looking at his

interested if they’d provide energy during the many blackouts we have since our energy provider went bankrupt. But I know that any electricity generated by my panels would go right back into the grid and if I wanted power during blackouts I’d have to pay $20,000 extra for a battery that might keep my refrigerator light on for a day or two. He had no reply to my objections but instead pulled out a calculator and started showing me how much money the panels would save me and how they’d pay for themselves in just five years by lowering my electric bill. I explained that I planned to be decomposing by then. “I know how much you like to save money,” the weatherman accurately said as he kept pounding numbers into his hand held calculator. “Darn it,” he said, “I was going to show you what a great deal this is but my calculator keeps going dim because there’s not enough light in here to power it.” ‘Hmmm. That sounds vaguely familiar,” I said smugly. Lee Pitts is an independent columnist for The Atascadero News and Paso Robles Press; you can email them at leepitts@leepittsbooks.com.

circumstances he started to sink. When Peter originally made that request, he had his vision locked on the Lord. It’s so easy for us to be seeking God hardcore when we are in need or want of something — we’re in the Word, we’re worshipping every day, praying hard in church, and even fasting! Then, how quickly after God meets that request do we turn away and start getting distracted by all of life and life’s stuff? We need to keep our eyes on Jesus and keep seeking the face of God and not just His hand. We need to be going after Him, and not just what He can do. So, remember: Be daring enough to ask God for great things! He has the power to call you to do it! Keep your eyes on the Lord after you have received your blessing and request, even more so! Paso Robles to break ground soon on new beach volleyball court

Construction costs being covered by community donations STAFF REPORT

PASO ROBLES — Paso Robles High School (PRHS) is one step closer to fulfilling the need for a regulation beach volleyball facility in North County. Paso Robles Joint Unified School District (PRJUSD) has approved the new three-court regulation facility, with plans to break ground before the end of the calendar year. The facility is estimated to cost $120,000. All the construction costs are being covered by community donations from Garrett Thiessen Construction, Advanced Concrete Construction, and The Bowman Family, along with program sponsorships from Borjon Auto

Center, Paso Robles Waste & Recycle, Bearcat Boosters, and Paso Robles High School Athletic Department. The new facility will be located across the street from PRHS, between the District Office and the softball field. “This is a great opportunity for our Bearcats,” said PRHS Athletic Director Michael Sauret. “Bringing this facility to PRHS is helping to solidify the commitment to our beach volleyball athletes.” During the Tuesday, Oct. 24, PRJUSD board meeting, trustees also approved the receipt of the “Bearcat Beach Donation” from donors Allen G. Bowman and Garrett Theissen of Theissen Construction to complete the construction plans for three beach volleyball courts in the turf area to the east of the district office. According to staff, the donors have completed

a topographic survey and plans that include demolition, grading, and erosion control, along with the installation of equipment for the new courts. The new courts will accommodate the PRHS girls’ beach volleyball team, which currently holds its practice on a grass court. Athletes on the team expressed concerns for not being properly prepared for games due to not practicing on a sand court. Trustees unanimously approved the donation for the beach volleyball courts. Beach Volleyball Director of Sport and head coach Vickie Werling said about the new facility, “I am so happy for our athletes to get a proper and most importantly a safe facility to practice and compete on. This will help us grow our program and allow Paso Robles High School to have a home field location easily

accessible to our athletes and spectators. Our goal will be to encourage our local surrounding high schools to join the beach program as well, so we can offer the youth of the North County a sport that ages with you beyond high school and college.” Girls beach volleyball became a recognized CIF sport in 2022. In the 2023 beach volleyball season, the Bearcats earned second in the Ocean League and took first place in the gold bracket at the end-of-season tournament with the duo of McKenzie Cobb/Olivia Heinbach being named first team All-League and Ashlee Wescom/Kayley Mills being named second team All-League. The 2024 season begins in February. If you are interested in becoming a Bearcat beach volleyball sponsor, please reach out to Coach Werling at vwerling@pasoschools.org.
