’m going to be a bridesmaid! As you’ll have gathered, I’m giddy with excitement and couldn’t wait to share my news with you. Our dear Melissa Barker, fellow editor here at CWM, popped the question last month asking me if I’d accept this huge honour. I’m thrilled to be taking this journey with such a dear friend and we’ll be sharing our learnings every step of the way, so don’t miss Melissa’s bridal diary and moodboard over on page 112. Even bigger news of course is something that affects us all: Boris’ roadmap out of this mess. Here at CWM HQ we were thrilled to see a plan back to wedding normality. It’ll be a slow process, but with everyone pulling together and staying safe it should mean we see our beloved weddings and wedding industry back in full force by the end of June. That in itself is cause for celebration. On that note, let’s take a look at what we’ve got for you this issue as I round up my highlights across these two pages. Enjoy and keeeep planning!

Duo 2 of Harps have been busy during the pandemic, not only helping couples plan their wedding music virtually, but also developing as artists providing new content and inspiration. Between lockdowns the pair took the opportunity to spend time at a recording studio to lay down three new singles, which will be released later this year, as well as filming a music video. In addition to performing online, sharing music videos and keeping in touch with their couples, Adel and Karina have also been releasing monthly blogs and podcasts – check out Harpcast. As a wedding business they’ve had to adapt and to enable couples to continue booking live music for their micro weddings, launching a new Sweetheart Package, which includes a comprehensive personalised https://youtu.be/q_LjBtyYQSo playlist from their extensive repertoire for your ceremony, drinks reception and wedding breakfast. Click play and check out the latest single, Dawn, with the fab self-filmed music video. For further information head over https://2ofharps.com 9

Spice up your life

HEY GOOD LOOKIN’

A busy bridal boutique doesn’t have much chance to give itself a makeover, but lockdown provided a rare opportunity for the team at Dress Dreams to create a whole new brand identity, completely refurbishing the boutique in Sevenoaks, as well as undergoing a website refresh. “We’ve been busier than ever and are ready to welcome brides through our doors, wowing them with our breathtaking new interior,” says owner Kate. Check out www.dressdreams.co.uk

Outdoor dining

Now that restrictions are beginning to lift and larger weddings will soon be back on the agenda, Karara is taking bookings and is very excited to be doing so. Spicing up the Kent food scene Karara, meaning “spicy”, is the new brand name for amazingly aromatic dishes created by local chef Paul Babra. It’s the culmination of Paul’s vision of bringing flavours to life wherever you are. “I don’t want to stay inside four walls and cook, my team and I want to go to events, see people and share in their enjoyment of the healthy flavourful foods we create. These aren’t just curries, this is so much more – it’s an experience,” he says. With a loyal following across the county Paul and his team are well known for catering huge events with their capability for producing hundreds of high quality, healthy and delicious meals at venues such as Leeds Castle. So, if you’re looking for a bit of spice in your wedding breakfast why not pop along and sample the dishes for yourself at the Karara marquee set up at Macknade Food Village from Thursday to Sunday. Also check out www.paulbabra.co.uk www.facebook.com/pazspics

Tipis Restaurant launched at The Gardens wedding venue in October 2020. With restriction-free weddings unable to proceed until 21st June 2021, the team utilised this prestigious venue, professional chefs and event-planning expertise to bring a new dining experience to the local community. Tipis has now announced its plans to throw open its doors to patrons once more, offering outdoor dining from 12th April thanks to Boris’ roadmap. The Restaurant will serve seasonal and locallysourced British food from open tipis with views across the venue’s English country gardens. Local styling company Hire Love has even decorated the dining area in a rustic style that pays homage to the beauty of the Kent countryside in spring. So, if you’re eager to get back to date night, give it a try. The restaurant will be open every Thursday to Sunday until 13th June when it will temporarily close for weddings being held at The Gardens. OF A KIND Jackie and Graeme said “I do” at the beautiful Lympne Castle on 15th July, 2019 Images courtesy of Nicky’s Photography

ackie and Graeme met via a dating website, My Single Friend. “Some people are sceptical when it comes to online dating, but at the time Graeme was living in Hythe and I was living in Orpington, so without it we’d never have met,” Jackie says. After several weeks of exchanging messages, the pair arranged to meet up one Sunday lunchtime and spent the whole afternoon chatting and laughing together. “We found that we had so much in common and that there was a real connection between us, so we couldn’t wait to see each other again,” Jackie explains. After a year of whizzing back and forth up and down the M20, the couple decided to move in together, and the rest is history. To celebrate their sixth anniversary together the pair arranged an afternoon tea at the Ritz, and it was there, after the champagne had been poured, that Graeme got down on one knee and produced Jackie’s beautiful engagement ring. She tells us, “There was no hesitation in accepting his proposal as I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him.” Join us as the bride shares her account of their wonderful wedding day…

SETTING THE SCENE After looking at several different venue styles Jackie and Graeme decided their location of choice would be somewhere with an abundance of character. They booked an appointment for a viewing of Lympne Castle and fell in love with it as soon as they set foot inside the main gate. “It’s a beautiful Grade I building, dating back to the 12th century, set in stunning grounds with the most amazing views. Plus, there’s a summer house, which can be used for outdoor ceremonies. This was something we particularly wanted, and we were fortunate that the weather was good enough to make our wish come true,” Jackie explains. The wedding’s colour palette was inspired by a beautiful old bicycle the couple saw at a wedding fair at Detling. It had a large basket on the front filled with hydrangeas, foxgloves, roses and other gorgeous blooms, all in a mixture of lilacs and mauve. “As soon as we saw it, we knew it was exactly what we wanted,” Jackie remembers. As the Castle’s Great Hall is so full of character, with high ceilings, wood panelling and ornate windows, the pair decided to avoid gilding the lily. They opted for tall antique gold candelabras, which were decorated with hydrangeas, roses, lavender and gypsophila and adorned three of the tables. The remainder were dressed with low centrepieces, which comprised a mirror base, candles and the same flowers. Further decoration included a gorgeous floral garland on the Hall’s old fireplace mantelpiece and their beloved bicycle, which sat outside in the courtyard holding a welcome sign. The table plan and numbers boasted the same floral theme and palette as the invitations. The former was displayed on a white easel at the entrance and the table numbers sat in antique gold stands, which complemented the candelabras beautifully. Graeme loves cake, so it simply had to the be the highlight of the day! Jackie tells us, “We chose The Cake Witch after meeting her at a wedding fair where her skill in cake making blew us away.” The couple opted 37 

Knowlton Court is a beautiful country estate located in the heart of Kent, the garden of England. It is an exceptional venue to enjoy for your wedding weekend.

Knowlton Court, Nr Canterbury, Kent CT3

www.knowltoncourt.co.uk

REAL WEDDING for a four-tier semi-naked bake in three different flavours – rich chocolate madeira with chocolate buttercream, carrot cake with an orange cream frosting, and lemon with lemon curd and buttercream. The showstopper was decorated with halos of gypsophila, lavender, herbs and foliage for a whimsical look. Lympne Castle does its own catering and provided a selection of canapés for the drinks reception, followed by a wedding breakfast menu featuring a choice of three starters, main courses and desserts. Later in the evening, guests were served an array of accompaniments to go with the cheese and pork pie wedding cake. Jackie says, “All our guests were very impressed with the quality of the food and the way in which it was served, some even said it was the best they’d ever had at such an occasion.”

LOOKING THE PART Jackie and one of her daughters headed to Victoria’s Bridal Boutique in Orpington for the big dress shop and selected Goldie by Stella York. “I wanted a colour and style to complement the castle setting and being a pale antique gold, it suited perfectly,” the bride explains. Since the gown was already quite detailed, Jackie didn’t feel the need to accessorise much more. She simply wore a hair clip and a gold locket, which belonged to her mum, along with a gold bracelet, which belonged to Graeme’s mum. The final touch was another gold bracelet given to her by her daughters on wedding morn. Graeme asked his son, Harry, to be his best man and since it was an intimate wedding, they chose not to have any other groomsmen. The gents hired navy suits from Well Suited, which they paired with brown shoes. Harry’s waistcoat matched his suit, whereas his dad’s was a fine blue check. They accessorised with ties and pocket squares to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. The bridal party consisted of two gorgeous bridesmaids: Gemma and Jess, Jackie’s daughters. Although the dresses were identical in style they opted for two complementing hues: one in sweet pea and the other in lilac. The bouquets and buttonholes were all carefully planned and coordinated beautifully. Jackie’s bridal bouquet contained amnesia and quicksand roses, purple clematis, lavender, gypsophila and eucalyptus tied in a loose, natural style. The bride tribe’s bouquets were smaller versions of this, and the chaps’ buttonholes tied in with amnesia rose, lavender and eucalyptus for Graeme, with gypsophila for Harry.

TIME TO CELEBRATE Classical trio Trifonics brought an elegant ambience to the ceremony and drinks reception with the melodic strains of the violin, flute and cello. For the evening bash acoustic duo The Jetters entertained the newlyweds and their guests. Jackie recalls, “They were very talented and played a great mix of music that got everyone up on the dancefloor.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS The bride tells us, “When our guests started to arrive a mixture of emotions took over. I’d been planning and looking forward to this for so long and I wanted to take everything in as I knew it would go by so quickly. As I walked across the lawn and all eyes were on me, all I could think about was seeing Graeme waiting for me and I knew this was going to be the best day of my life.” Graeme says, “I didn’t feel nervous as I waited in the Summer House for the ceremony to begin. I had time to think about my life with Jackie and it was the first time I can honestly say I was 100 per cent sure I was doing the right thing. I was buzzing with excitement!”

“As I own my own travel business the honeymoon was left to me. We decided that doing a safari in South Africa would work well with a visit to Cape Town and the Winelands.” – Jackie WORDS OF WISDOM “Throughout the planning process we had lists on our phones, which we shared, updating one another on our progress. We found this invaluable as we knew exactly what had to be done and when so nothing was ever forgotten. “When choosing suppliers, make sure you’ve got a good rapport with them, as you’ll probably need to make changes and seek reassurance. On the day it’s important to have great suppliers by your side like our wedding coordinator, Aimee and our photographer, Nicky. They’ll take control so that you don’t need to think about anything other than enjoying yourself.” 39 

exter proposed to Lauren in one of her favourite places, the beach at Camber Sands. “He told me the trip was a birthday present, and even though it was a couple of weeks before the actual day, I wasn’t suspicious at all,” she tells us. She woke up one morning in Seascape, the holiday property where they were staying and went downstairs to find breakfast laid out with the ring on the table. He’d chosen their anniversary as a couple and got down on one knee to propose. The pair spent the rest of the day walking along the beach and enjoyed a celebration dinner in

the evening. “It was perfect,” Lauren says, “And so was the ring.” The choice of wedding venue was simple as the pair have always held a soft spot for Hever Castle, having visited it on many a date. Lauren explains, “It’s always been our dream to get married there.” Despite having to scale back guest numbers in the wake of the pandemic, the couple still had their dream day in September 2020 and are hoping to have a bigger bash in June 2021. Join us now as we get the lowdown from the bride… 43 

I travelled to the venue in an open-top Routemaster bus with my bridesmaids, mum, dad and grandad who used to be a bus driver and regularly drove these vehicles. It was decorated throughout with flowers.

Dexter arrived in a classic VW Campervan.

44

The bridesmaids looked beautiful in lilac dresses and my flowergirl wore a white dress from Victoria’s Bridal Boutique where I also purchased my own.

We both felt ecstatic that after months of anxiety due to the pandemic, our day had finally come.

I wore Eva by Stella York. I tried on a lot of different styles, but this dress made me feel so special that I didn’t want to take it off! I paired it with a long veil by Richard Designs.

REAL WEDDINGS

I accessorised with bespoke flower hair pins by Eden B Studio. They were perfect and matched the undertone of my dress, plus they had a pearl in their centres to match my earrings.

Dexter wore a custom-made Ted Baker suit. It was grey with lines of lavender running through it. He accessorised with his JW Benson antique pocket watch and Ted Baker shoes. The groomsmen were all dressed in grey suits to complement the shade of the groom’s.

After the ceremony we had a drinks reception overlooking the lake. We had a sit-down three-course meal in the evening followed by teas and coffees.

The top table was decorated in drapes with fairylights around the pillars.

45 

“Concentrate on what you both like. It’s your day and you don’t need to please anyone else.”

Due to restrictions, we were limited in what we could do for an evening reception, but we had 26 guests and we all had a great time.

We had two favours, one was a packet of seeds labelled “let love grow,” and the other was a box of matches that read “the perfect match.” These were to be used for lighting the sparklers in the evening. The place names were small wooden plaques engraved with our guests’ names.

https://vimeo.com/467665071

We just wanted to get married. In the end we didn’t care about having the big party with 140 guests, we just wanted to be husband and wife. We had the best day with the most important people there and we wouldn’t change a thing

Having our pictures taken outside the castle in the dark with nobody else around was so surreal!

“The highlight for me was seeing Lauren walking down the aisle, and it was great to be able to celebrate with our closest friends and family around us.” – Dexter

We’d originally booked a honeymoon stay at Walt Disney World Florida for two weeks, but the pandemic had different plans. Instead, we went to Rhodes, Greece, and stayed in a beautiful hotel for 10 nights.

REAL WEDDINGS

PERFECT

S

cott proposed to Dominique on holiday in Austria, while celebrating her 30th birthday. The pair were visiting Zell am See and had hired a little boat to cruise the lake in. “Getting down on one knee was a bit of struggle in such a small boat, but he did the best he could and asked me to marry him,” Dominique remembers. Scott had been carrying the ring around with him the entire holiday looking for the perfect spot, and he certainly found the most romantic, there in the centre of the scenic lake. Join us as the bride shares her account of the gorgeous wedding day…

SETTING THE SCENE Dominique and Scott fell in love with Broome Park as soon as they saw it. “It’s so grand and beautiful, yet has such a warm and welcoming atmosphere,” the bride explains. Not to mention the golf course, which suited enthusiast Scott to a tee! However, the pandemic struck and they were forced to scale back plans in favour of a bigger bash for their one-year anniversary at the “Having a small same venue. So, they set about carefully wedding meant we selecting a small band of wedding experts to craft their intimate occasion. “We went could spend real time from more than 100 guests, to 30, then with our guests, as well down to 15 just two weeks before the actual day,” Dominique tells us. But, the as with each other.” one thing that never changed was the original wedding date – 10th October, 2020. “I was worried whether a wedding of 15 would even feel like a wedding at all, but it was the most magical day,” the bride recalls. Dominique’s bouquet featured a palette of pinks and orange, with green foliage, arranged in a loose meadow-like feel. Scott’s buttonhole was a white rose and the others were dark pink. These were all created by Louise at East Kent Flower Company. Dominique says, “We were lucky to be able to meet with her when the restrictions were relaxed during the summer. She really took the time to get a feel of what we wanted.” The table plan was an old cork pinboard that the couple painted and the talented mother-of-the-bride calligraphed all of the guests’ names on it. Dominique found some beautifully coloured tapered candles for the centrepieces and borrowed candlesticks from various family members to put them in, which created a lovely eclectic feel. They’d had some trees felled in their garden and used log slices from those as the finishing touches, which the candlesticks sat on. The venue was also decorated with tall faux flowers, along with lanterns and electric pillar candles. “It was simple, but Broome Park being such a beautiful venue, it was very effective,” Dominique tells us. The big-day bake featured the cake topper from Dominique’s parent’s wedding, which her sister had also used. So, it was part of a lovely family tradition. A fabulous meal followed the ceremony, catered by the venue. “The food was incredible and the service from all members of staff was top notch. They made us feel so special and welcome,” Dominique says. The newlyweds and guests then stayed on into the early evening to enjoy a few drinks together. 50

REAL WEDDINGS “Everyone had the best time. The atmosphere was amazing and the whole group laughed from start to finish.”

LOOKING THE PART

THE GETAWAY

The bride wore Josie by Rebecca Ingram. “I loved the elegance, simple lines and neckline,” she explains. She accessorised with a stunning detailed veil and head piece, with earrings and a necklace belonging to her mother – something borrowed. Completing the look was a bracelet Scott bought for his bride to open on the morning of the wedding. For the reception, Dominique changed into a floorlength bridal dress from ASOS. Scott was dressed in a tailored suit with orange detailing to complement the autumnal theme. His groomsmen’s attire was made from the same navy fabric minus the detailing. The adult bridesmaids looked beautiful in floor-length navy dresses with a bow at the back, while Dominique’s young niece wore a navy dress, also with a bow on the back for the ceremony before changing into a white dress for the evening.

The newlyweds managed to get away for a week-long UK mini-moon following the wedding. This was a surprise present from both sets of parents and Dominique’s grandparents. The pair had the best week at Dabinett Treehouse in Wells and, blessed with glorious weather, spent the week exploring.

“It’s such a stressful time to plan a wedding, but if you can find suppliers that you can build a good rapport with, it really helps.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Dominique and Scott were surprised at how excited and emotional they felt on the day. “We both said we’d never been happier. I felt so giddy from beginning to end!” the bride remembers. She continues, “The ceremony so was beautiful and natural. Then the photos – I don’t think I’ve laughed to much in ages. We were so lucky to have such a great photographer and videographer. They blended in and felt like guests. The whole day felt so relaxed. Even though I was running late, the Broome Park team were so accommodating, they really went above and beyond for us.” 51

“We were so grateful to have the option of getting married, and ours was the wedding day we didn’t know we wanted!”

“If you want to get married just go for it. You might be surprised and find your perfect day is actually a small simple wedding after all.” THE W-DAY TEAM Venue and catering, Broome Park, www.broomepark.co.uk Photographer, Emma Migden Photography, www.emmamigdenphotography.com Videographer, BBV Wedding Productions, http://bbvweddingvideo.co.uk Dress and accessories, Brides by Solo, www.bridesbysolo.co.uk Hair stylist, Jessica Ross Hairstylist, www.facebook.com/JessicaRossHairstylist Make-up artist, Make-up by Mrs L Carter, www.instagram.com/makeupbymrslcarter Suits, Moss Bros, www.moss.co.uk Flowers, East Kent Flower Company, https://eastkentflowercompany.com Wedding rings, Bliss Rings, www.blissrings.co.uk 52

edding planner, Gloria Darko of My Wedding Fixer set out to pay homage to African wedding culture by planning and designing this Afro-chic wedding shoot. Gloria says, “We delivered a subtle fusion of traditional West African-style art and décor with the modern contemporary feel of Western Europe and North America. Afro chic is the point at which these two ideas meet, blend and amalgamate.” Captured at The Orangery, Maidstone, the venue’s Garden Room creates a naturally stunning, bold, opulent and vibrant space to encapsulate the theme. The bespoke floral designs were an opportunity to include elements that sensitively draw upon cultural heritage in a way that’s both respectful and authentic, whilst marrying the design with the chic, fashionforward interests of many a modern-day couple. The fabulous dresses speak of inclusivity and diversity, with the Afro-chic story perfectly echoed in the boutique’s values to help brides from so many different cultures and backgrounds. Then, the beautiful venue styling, cake and stationery all work in perfect harmony with model Jocelyn’s hair and make-up look embodying an effortless spirit of independence. 55

CAKES

bake www.jamirahphotographers.com

he wedding cake has always been a much-loved tradition, whether served as a dessert or as a take-home treat for your guests. Not only does it offer a delicious delight it also serves as a showstopping centrepiece to your reception space, which nowadays is nothing short of a work of art. We chatted to some of the county’s wedding cake makers and asked whatever could be next in the wonderful world of big-day bakes.

BLESSING ENAKIMIO, BLÉ COUTURE CAKES www.blecouturecakes.com

TREND PREDICTIONS Blessing says: “I think the over-riding trend will be edgy and four-dimensional – cakes that appeal to more than the sense of sight and taste. Big cakes in 2021 will transcend the norm as couples are getting bolder with their choices. For more luxurious weddings the chandelier cake will feature as the grand edible centrepiece. Ruffles, rustic, metallic touches, geode, sharp edges, and hollow will still be in play, but I predict staged cakes will trump them all.“

www.jamirahphotographers.com

Based in Ashford, Blessing specialises in creating an edible experience with every cake. It all began with a princess cake she made for her daughter years ago. She felt restricted by recipes in her ancient cake book and set out to explore new tastes and ideas. It wasn’t long before she’d turned her passion into a homebased registered cake business. Flavours range from the traditional to the brave with fillings to complement each bake, plus a little bit of something extra…love!

BLESSING’S TOP TIP “Remember to include the actual eating of the cake on your wedding agenda. As you stage your cutting ceremony, do the same for the eating! Add your cake to the menu, either as a dessert or serve it with tea and coffee at a set time. That way it’s not overlooked.” 63

KAREN KER, ICED IMAGES CAKES For Karen, making cakes is a passion, an obsession even! After baking her first cake in 1992 for her mum’s birthday she decided to enrol in cake decorating classes at a local evening school. Iced Images opened its doors in 1996, as a hobby business in partnership with two of Karen’s classmates, and 16 years on she was able to go it alone as a full-time venture. Now, providing amazing customer service she specialises in wedding cakes and adores getting to know her couples while collaborating with them.

https albanephotography.com

TREND PREDICTIONS Karen says: “Many couples are still asking for naked and semi-naked cakes thanks to their simplicity and rustic feel. Meanwhile, buttercream bakes are also extremely popular, especially when decorated with fresh or dried flowers. Watercolour and marbling designs feature in many a couple’s vision for their sweet centrepiece and I’m receiving a lot of requests for sunflowers.“

https ghweddingphotography.co.uk

www.icedimagescakes.co.uk

KAREN’S TOP TIP “Think seriously about the size of your cake, don’t be pushed into having one that’s far bigger than you’ll need. It isn’t necessary to have a slice of cake for every one of your guests as some won’t have any. You’ll have looked after and fed your loved ones throughout the day, and especially if there’s an evening buffet, some will already be comfortably full or simply don’t have a sweet tooth. Find a cake maker you love, set a realistic budget and stick to it. They’ll be happy to work with you to achieve your goals.”

NICOLA PETERS, SUCH FUN CAKES www.suchfuncakes.co.uk

www.tonbridgephotoshop.co.uk

Baking has been a passion for Bexley-based Nicola for as long as she can remember. Encouraged by her family and friends she set about gaining various qualifications and eight years on, the rest is history. Creating delicious and delightful flavour combinations has taken years of practice and it fills her with profound joy when clients “ooh and ahh” over the taste of her bakes.

64

TREND PREDICTIONS Nicola says: “The point of being creative with the design of your wedding is to set your own trends – individuality is what sets you apart. My passion is flowers. I love their imperfections and in nature you rarely find two identical. That’s why I view them as a metaphor for marriage: we learn to accept each other’s imperfections and live side by side. You do have to know what you’re doing when decorating a cake with fresh blooms though as some can be poisonous. So, I love to craft flowers from edible paste and my work has earned me a reputation for exactness. It’s hard to believe they’re not real!“ NICOLA’S TOP TIP “Don’t forget to arrange a cake tasting and take advice on the number of tiers required, although at the end of the day it’s up to you how large your cake is. The design should complement your venue, flowers and style. My advice would be to follow your heart, be an individual and have courage in your convictions.”

CAKES

CHELSEA PRIOR, CHELSEA BUNS CAKE DESIGN

TREND PREDICTIONS Chelsea says: “With restrictions on and changes to weddings over the past 12 months, there’ll be a bigger focus on intimate occasions. However, this doesn’t mean they won’t pull out all the stops for their perfect day. Tall, elegant bakes will be huge in 2021, creating the impression of a large cake without the corresponding portion numbers. This is something I’ve done for years and they create a beautiful silhouette. Painted cakes will also be popular. Hand-painted florals, mixed with beautiful sugar flowers is one of my all-time favourite looks and I have lots of designs coming up this year that incorporate these elements.“ CHELSEA’S TOP TIP “Your big-day bake is an edible piece of art so consider where and how it will feature in the set up. It’ll probably be the most expensive one you’ll ever buy, why would you want it to be hidden away in dark corner? It’s there to be enjoyed by all, so go all out and have a table fully styled or simply add candles and decorative elements to enhance the setup.“

YVONNE TURNER, THE CAKE PLACE www.thecakeplaceashford.com Yvonne has been baking and decorating wedding cakes for many years. With a passion for bringing her couples’ ideas and dreams to life she loves nothing more than seeing their smiles at the end result. The Cake Place, a destination to create, opened in 2018 offering workshops and classes developed for all abilities. Yvonne and her team pride themselves on being friendly and helpful, fully equipped to create the cake of your dreams. TREND PREDICTIONS Yvonne says: “Following the impact of Covid-19 over the past year, I expect weddings in 2021 to lean towards the simple, small and elegant, with beautiful wedding cakes to match. Personally, my dream cake would be the ever-popular semi-naked bake, decorated in fondant roses and freesias.” YVONNE’S TOP TIP “Never lose sight of the fact that your big day is all about the two of you, so as with every other element of the wedding, your cake design should be devoted to your personal vision. It should be whatever you’d like it to be.” 67

Escape 2021 and travel back 100 years to the 1920s for some effortless elegance and glamorous escapism

T

he roaring 20s was a period of social and artistic dynamism, so when better to turn to create a sense of much needed escapism with a bit of glamour? New Kentish venue Edenwood Place lent itself beautifully to the plan with its characterful blend of industrial chic and botanical elegance. We’re always excited to see the launch of a new local venue here at Your Kent Wedding, but it’s an even bigger cause for celebration in such trying times. Nestled in the Bluebell Hill area between Maidstone and Rochester, even on a cloudy day miles of undulating landscape is visible from Edenwood Place’s courtyard, providing a stunning backdrop for any wedding. At the time, autumn had well and truly settled in meaning these incredible surroundings were brimming with rusty oranges and blue-grey clouds, and thus the team’s colour palette was born. Models Hollie and David are a real couple who had planned to tie the knot in August 2020, but like so many, have postponed their celebrations. The shoot not only gave this stunning new venue an opportunity to showcase itself as a gorgeous new wedding hotspot, and the suppliers a chance to show off their talents, but also it gave this lovely couple the chance to celebrate their love. 68

n open-front tipi, super-bright colours, glitter, smoke bombs and a cosy campfire – this local shoot is positively bursting with cool festival wedding vibes. The venue offered the main source of inspiration for coordinators Lou Finn of Bake To The Future, and photographer Florence Berry. “After visiting and seeing the vast open space and amazing tipi, we knew we needed to embrace the festival spirit, with an edgy vibrant feel to complement our real couple models.” they tell us. Believe it or not, this project was pulled together in just

three days, mirroring the sentiment of our couples that some things are just meant to be. Everything evolved naturally and the bright and bold palette pops against the surrounding landscape building layers of fun and happiness. The team also succeeded in creating a relevant intimate vibe, achieved through shots of their couple roasting marshmallows in front of a bell tent. This certainly made us even more excited to see our beloved weddings back on track and celebrated in full force. Enjoy! 73

T

o veil or not to veil? Gold or silver? Tiara or hair vine? These may well be the next batch of questions whizzing around your head once you’ve said “yes” to the dress. So, we talked to the county’s experts on all things bling to bring you the lowdown on completing your all-important look with flair. “Veils are heavier than you might expect, so how you wear your hair is something to consider. Ideally you’ll need an up do or a half up half down style to give you somewhere to pin it or the weight will cause it to slip.” – Victoria’s Bridal Boutique

www.victoriasbridalboutique.co.uk

Hayley Paige Bridal

“Choosing the perfect veil is all about balance – finding one that complements your gown without detracting from it. It’s worth enquiring whether the dress designer makes a matching veil.” – Victoria Elaine Bridal Disney Fairy Tale Weddings

“If you want to break from tradition why not go for a coloured veil or even a cape?” – Victoria Elaine Bridal

To know a veil Who better to turn to for advice on choosing the right veil than bridal boutique owners? Allow us to introduce the lovely Victoria Lamb of Victoria’s Bridal Boutique in Orpington (www.victoriasbridalboutique.co.uk) and Victoria Walton of Victoria Elaine Bridal Boutique in Maidstone (www.victoriaelainebridal.co.uk). They’re here to guide you through this potentially confusing minefield. “Veils range from elbow-length all the way to cathedral-length with the option to have custom lengths too. For long veils a popular choice is a veil opposing the detail on your wedding dress, either to avoid detracting from an embellished train, or to enhance a simpler one. Shorter veils tend to complement the wedding dress detail. For a more modern look, opt for a single-tier veil. It will fall away and flow beautifully down the back of your dress. But blushers are still popular amongst brides looking for that grand reveal, or extra volume.” – Victoria’s Bridal Boutique

Victoria Lamb of Victoria’s Bridal Boutique (www.victoriasbridalboutique.co.uk) says “Hair accessories can complete your look. If you've opted for understated elegance, a simple vine twisted into a soft bun works beautifully, but if you’re going full princess then a tiara or crown placed neatly into a half up half down style makes a real statement.”

www.victoriasbridalboutique.co.uk

www.victoriasbridalboutique.co.uk

www.victoriasbridalboutique.co.uk

She continues, “If sparkle isn’t for you, opt for a flower crown for a boho vibe. Alternatively, a flower slide or comb can give that hint of whimsy, while helping to incorporate your wedding’s palette. We recommend getting your accessories on your first fitting, about 12 weeks before the big day. By this point you’ll have a clear vision for your look.”

Victoria Lamb says, “The simplest dress can be transformed by a diamanté belt giving your lace dress a lovely waist feature too. It’s also a gorgeous way to add a little extra twinkle in the evening once you’ve removed your veil.”

Victoria Walton of Victoria Elaine Bridal says, “Look for shoes you’re going to be comfortable in all day. It’s best to buy a pair from a bridal company as they have lots of extra padding. You could even go for the on-trend block heel or bridal trainers. Above all, remember when you have your dress alterations your hem will be measured according to their height.”

JEWELLERY AND ACCESSORIES

www.navettejewellery.co.uk

Natalie Towell of Navette Jewellery in Ashford (www.navettejewellery.co.uk) says, “Metal tones are a personal preference, but with the vintage look still going strong, rose gold is a popular choice. Combining a modern design with soft gold tones creates that gorgeous blend of old and new.”

www.navettejewellery.co.uk

WE CAN’T DECIDE BETWEEN A TRADITIONAL BAND OR SOMETHING MORE MODERN. WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST? Natalie says, “There’s a real interest in personalised wedding rings and gents are being more expressive with textures influenced by nature and feature patterns. Ladies tend to favour diamond-set rings with a characterful twist such as an arch or pinch to the band.” www.navettejewellery.co.uk

WHAT METAL SHOULD MY WEDDING RING BE? Olivia Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald Jewellers in Canterbury (www.fitzgeraldjewellers.co.uk) says, “Don’t be afraid to mix up the colours. Make a feature of the contrast between yellow and white gold. If you want your partner’s ring to match your own but they’re not so keen, consider a ring made from half and half. It will complement your wedding band while maintaining its own character.”

WEDDING RING Q&A

www.fitzgeraldjewellers.co.uk

Olivia says, “When we think of wedding rings we quite often imagine our parents’ traditional polished bands, but there are options that defy convention. Look for something with a matte finish or ask your jeweller to engrave something special on the inside like your partner’s fingerprint or even their heartbeat. What’s more, if you’d like diamonds, but can’t afford them right now, start with one or two and add more at a later date, perhaps one with each wedding anniversary.” WE’VE HAD A QUICK LOOK AT SOME RINGS, BUT HAVEN’T SEEN ANY WE LIKE. WHAT ARE OUR OPTIONS? Olivia says, “Your wedding rings are something you’ll have for the rest of your lives, so make sure you choose something you really love. Buying from a jeweller like ours means your wedding ring is handmade exactly to your specifications. So, if you have an engagement ring that needs something shaped to fit next to it, you can have it made bespoke. It might sound expensive, but it’s really not and you won’t regret it.” 83

STYLE AND PERSONALITY

How do we go about finding a photographer that’s the right fit for our style and personalities? I’ve always thought it must be such a difficult decision for couples to choose their photographer for one of the most important days of their lives. But, in a nutshell what you need to concentrate on is style and personality when selecting the right person for the job. Simply ask yourselves the following questions: ❤ What style do I really like? Candid, natural, fine art… ❤ Do I want my day to be organised photographically so I get the shots I really want? ❤ Do I want a fun, sociable photographer or someone who will just blend into the background ❤ Will they fit in with my friends and family?

www.davidkingphotographer.co.uk

EXPERT ADVICE

❤ What kind of photography package do I want? There should be a pre-wedding meeting with your photographer as they’ll need to know the finer details of the day and listen to your ideas and direction so that you can enjoy the perfect day you’ve planned. You’ll want to make sure your photographer is organised and, above all, experienced so that you get the group shots you’re looking for along with lovely posed couple imagery – stunning photographs that capture the real emotion of the day. So, I can’t deny that there are lots of things to think about before you make your final decision, but it really will be worth the time and effort when you’re presented with the most beautiful images of your wedding day. COMING UP ROSES

I had my heart set on having peonies in my bouquet, but at the time we’re getting married they won’t be in season. What can you suggest as alternatives that will have a similar look and impact? As soon as peonies go out of season the input of beautiful garden roses is absolutely perfect. There are so many different varieties and the wonderful Alexandra Farms offers a wide selection of colour palettes and shapes, with many of the roses beautifully scented too. In fact, there’s such a wide range that roses can be used according to any season. Quite a few varieties do have a similar look to peonies and they last for a long time since they arrive in a tight bud before opening fully to show you how gorgeous they are just in time for your big day with glorious layers of colours, textures and scents unlike any other. Also boasting a similar cup shape to peonies, along with an irresistible fragrance, they make a showstopping focal point in your bouquet. With ample charm, these roses can also transform a space and create the most enchanting ambience, weaving their magic throughout your special day. THANK YOU VERY MUCH

I have five bridesmaids and want to thank them all for their support without breaking the bank. What can you suggest? There are many ways to thank your bridesmaids without stretching your budget. You could write a small card to express how important they are to you, thanking them for their love and support leading up to your big day. Words say and mean so much and cost just the effort you put into writing them. Flowers, often presented at the reception are lovely and colourful, but sadly don’t last very long. Giving your best gals a gift of jewellery on the other hand, which they can wear on the day, doesn’t have to be expensive. Whether you choose a set or one beautiful piece, it will be worn with love for many months and years afterwards, evoking happy memories of your wedding day. These silver-plated and freshwater pearl bracelets (pictured) are perfect for bridesmaids, flowergirls and the maid-of-honour. They come attached to a card with a nice sentiment and there’s room on the back for you to write a personal message too. Gift boxed and presented in a ribboned bag, at £14.99 they won’t break the bank and will be a lasting and meaningful thank you gift.

RIGHT HAND MAN

What are the benefits of hiring a toastmaster versus using our venue’s MC or a family member? Toastmasters enhance the day, adding extra personal touches throughout that make it all the more special for you and your guests. For me, being a toastmaster is about making special memories for people. What’s more, I can act as an extra pair of hands, not only helping to organise the day, but keeping guests entertained and helping the photographer by gathering guests for formal photos. A good toastmaster needs patience, a fun-loving, friendly personality and experience in hosting live events. They also need a good microphone technique, and ability to ad lib with confidence, and excel in stressful situations. You’ll always have a lot of input into what I do. We’ll meet a few weeks before the big day and talk about how you’d like everything to run. I have a checklist I like to go through that helps us decide how to structure it all. Do be wary of the drunk relative or DJ! A lot of couples tell me their uncle or another relative is taking charge of managing the speeches, but I’ve seen this get out of hand many times, particularly when drink is involved. They can get carried away, offending other guests and rather than enhancing a wedding, people end up remembering it for the wrong reasons. Remember too, a DJ is a DJ not a toastmaster, they don’t add what we can, having another very different role to perform. Similarly, venue staff are great at coordinating the day, but they have no expertise in the talking and entertaining the guests. Hire a toastmaster – it takes away so many headaches!

We’re tying the knot at a stately home venue. How can we style it tastefully without going overboard since it’s already very ornate? Here in Kent, we have so many licensed stately homes and manor houses – it’s amazing what you can do in such ornate spaces. It’s important to take into account the existing décor; most stately homes have prominent features that you can base your design on. Take the time to observe them prior to selecting your styling. Pay attention to the accent of the colours and textures in the space including the floors, curtains, lighting and ceilings. Draw from the existing colour palette and incorporate those hues into your design. For instance, the ornate lighting feature in the room might be gold, so include that as your design’s metallic shade. You might use gold rimmed glass- and tableware or gold candelabra as centrepieces. Concentrating your design means you don’t have too much everywhere, just in specific areas. For your tables, go for textured and coloured table linen – it goes beautifully in embellished rooms and accentuates the latent colours already present. Opt for bold floral arrangements, nothing too small or low or they’ll get swallowed up, and nothing too high to distract from the room’s opulence. Most importantly, play close attention to the size of the space and avoid overcrowding it. You and your guests need to feel free to roam without the sense of being stifled by the décor.

Look and feel your big-day best with advice from our beauty professionals

ALL ABOUT THE BASE I’ve been through endless foundations. How can I pick the right one for me, once and for all? Elizabeth says: What a question! Indeed, foundations are an absolute minefield. Choosing the right one for you can be a frustrating and confusing process that’s costly if you get it wrong. To find the one for you, you’ll need to consider both your skin and the desired result. Check out my five-point guide… Skin type – normal, dry, oily or combination. Skin tone – fair, light, medium or deep. Skin undertone – cool (pink, red or bluish undertones and you burn easily in the sun), warm (golden, olive or yellow undertones and you tan easily), or neutral (both blue/purple and blue/green veins and you tan lightly). Foundation coverage – lightweight, medium, or full Foundation finish – matte (powdery and best for oily skin), satin (between matte and dewy, best for combination skin), or luminous (dewy and best for dry or mature skin). When you know where you stand with these five pointers, you’ll be able to approach the make-up counter with confidence. Always aim to match a potential shade to your jawline, not the back of your hand. Take a small mirror with you and look at the swatch in natural daylight as well as under the shop lighting. If the colour stands out on your skin, it’s the wrong shade – it’ll be invisible if matched perfectly. You may even want to consider investing in a summer shade and a winter one, you can even mix them together to get the correct tone for the season. Finally, for the best finish, always choose a moisturiser or primer that suits your skin type. Psst… Check out Elizabeth’s foundation recommendations at www.yourkent.wedding/beauty-news-headlines

EMBRACE THOSE CURLS My hair is curly and rather unruly. How can I ensure it’s looking it’s best for W-day and what bridal style should I choose? Angela says: Curls are effortlessly romantic offering a relaxed glamorous look. Finding the right haircare routine and products will be your key to success. Humidity is often a bride’s number one concern and if hair is already dry or damaged, when you step outside in these conditions, it will absorb that moisture leaving it fluffy or frizzy. The process of taming it starts in the shower. It’s vital to pick products that will gently cleanse and moisturise the hair, using a sulphate-free shampoo will do just that, and never skip that crucial conditioning step. Also, be mindful of the water temperature as washing your hair in very hot water can also make it dry. Once out of the shower, avoid rubbing your hair with a towel as this can damage it, leading to frizz, so gently pat using a soft cotton t-shirt instead. Then, to detangle start from the ends moving up to the mid lengths then upwards to the roots. When the hair is wet it’s also more fragile, so try a detangling brush or comb. There’s plenty of curly wedding hair inspiration out there, so don’t be afraid. Soft curls gathered low and central is a trendy way to wear naturally curly hair up, or if you’d prefer to wear your hair free flowing consider pinning just one side back. Whatever look you opt for, it’s vital to finish it with a product that’ll seal the hair. Hair spray or antihumidity sprays are always popular choices. A combination of investing in the right products, caring for your curls and guarding against humidity should bag you that perfect curly bridal look.

SILKY SMOOTH

I’d heard about the wonderous effects of silk on hair, but was slightly sceptical until I discovered British brand, This Is Silk. I can tell you I haven’t looked back since. If, like me, you’re growing concerned about the increasing knot of hair wrapped around your hair band, check out the silk skinnies. Made from 22 momme mulberry silk, they protect your hair from friction, kinks and damage, offering strong hold without the unwanted effects of a standard elastic hair band. No longer do I pull a clump of hair out of my head whenever I take my hair down and it already looks in much better condition overall. The bunny skinnies are my supercute personal favourites, worth every penny. Head over to https://thisissilk.com, you won’t regret it!

Ring-a-ding-ding County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

L

ike many of you, I’m currently trying to plan my wedding during a global pandemic – there’s a sentence I never thought I’d say! My partner Dave and I have been together just under three years, and we’d talked about getting engaged a few times over the course of our relationship. My work colleagues were also giddy every time we went away thinking he would propose; after a fantastic trip to the Northern Lights and coming back ring-free none of us had any idea when it would be – but I kind of liked it that way! He had planned to propose last July but, due to COVID-19, his dreams of a romantic trip abroad were quashed. He had several backup plans, all of which were ruined by lockdowns and restrictions, so in the end, he asked me in front of my family (virtually) on

Christmas Day. It was a lovely moment, and we were both really excited and couldn’t wait to start planning.

PLAN, PLAN, PLAN! Having worked in the wedding industry for the last few years, I had a rough idea of where to start with the planning process. I’m highly organised and a big fan of making lists – there isn’t a folder in our house that isn’t colour coded, so the first thing I did was purchase a wedding planner to keep track of everything. I also looked through local wedding magazines, made a Pinterest board and joined a few Facebook groups, which are full of community spirit. Next, Dave and I sat down and made a list of the people we wanted to come to our wedding. A great rule we followed was to only invite people that we’d spoken to in the last six months. It might sound harsh, but we both have large extended families and were concerned it may quickly turn in to a big list of people who we don’t really know! We narrowed it down to 40 day guests and an additional 40 in the evening. Once we had the list, we were able to start focusing on the dreaded budget, which has been one of my least favourite parts of the process so far. We looked through guides online and over-budgeted for everything to ensure we don’t have any nasty surprises further down the line.

THE PERFECT SETTING After we had decided on our rough numbers 112

and budget, we began the exciting part – looking at venues. Due to the restrictions, this was a bit unconventional, with many properties only offering virtual viewings or only communicating via e-mail. Luckily, we managed to view our favourite venue in person the day before lockdown 3.0 began, and I’m so glad we did! We fell in love with it right away, and the staff have been amazing throughout the initial planning process. They were more than happy to answer all of our questions, in particular the dreaded COVID-19 related ones, and quickly set our minds at ease. It was exactly what we wanted with a gorgeous outdoor ceremony space and a barn area for the reception, perfect for our desired summer nuptials. We’re so excited to visit again, and for my mum, who is in full planning mode, to finally see it. Based on our venue’s advice we reserved the date, checked that our local council had a registrar available and once that was confirmed, we paid our deposit – yipee! I’ve since seen online a few brides who have booked their wedding but have been unable to secure a celebrant or registrar for their date. I’m thankful we followed the advice and checked first, it’s meant we have had a drama-free start to the wedding planning and are excited to see our plans unfold! Next issue, hear all about our plans for the food – my favourite bit – and finding our photographer!

BRIDE’S DIARY

Dave and I want quite a simple cake that’s full of delicious chocolate – yum! I love the idea of incorporating log slices throughout the day to add a rustic touch.

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

I adore macrame and have been learning how to do it in my spare time. We’re planning to make an arch to place behind us when we get married.

Our plan is to hire long wooden tables mixed with a few round versions.

Hanging lights are a popular trend that we’re thinking of using in our venue’s grounds.

We’ve decided on a sage green and blush pink colour scheme and want to incorporate lots of foliage.

Gold or rose gold cutlery is a must have!

This elegant envelope is exactly what we’re looking for. 113
