Help Stray Animals

Our religion orders the humane treatment of animals. Unfortunately those on the streets are being tortured and sometimes even killed. Many strays were actually once pets that were not kept properly indoors and found themselves out on the streets. The numerous animals wandering around homeless are exposed to harsh weather, deadly diseases that may be contracted by humans, car accidents not to mention cruelty.

The Kingdom witnessed a rise in the number of animal shelters that take in strays and help keep them alive. These shelters provide cats and dogs out in the open with a roof over their heads, medical treatment and food. They, however, still need help keeping up with the increasing number of homeless animals and require the assistance of pet owners.

Several shelters in Jeddah are raising awareness against animal homelessness and are calling for the aid of animal lovers to adopt pets and give them comfortable homes. Save a life, help a pet and remember that these loving creatures will always be by your side. BUSINESS

FINANCIAL PLANNING WITH REEM ASAAD Money in Ramadan We tend to spend more on holidays and special seasons. Here’s how you can prevent overspending this Ramadan.

When it comes to banks, there are a few good pointers to reduce waiting time and avoid unnecessary bank visits:

This is a universal trend but given the increasing life demands and budget requirements, you can experience the fulfilling holiness of the month without the pressures of overspending and timing bumps.

• Keep enough cash safely at home or at the office. ATM machines often malfunction due to excessive usage.

• Most of us pile up extra clothes, kitchenware, unwanted furniture and other home items throughout the year. Call a charity organization to pick up your goods. Book an appointment at least one month ahead. It takes a lot of time and effort to sort through the items and prepare for redistribution. • For Eid, try to plan your gift purchases early. All consumer businesses anticipate high demand and bump up their prices. 22 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015

• Check out your account balances if you wish to compute charity dues. The Zakat (Islamic tax) rate is 2.5 percent of net profit on capital gain and idle cash over a one-year cycle. Do the math and set these amounts aside. • Ramadan banking hours are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. (with prayer times in between). It is best to visit in the early opening hours between 10 and 12. Also note that banks usually break by Ramadan 27-28 (mind the weekend) therefore, I recommend that you finish off all pending matters before mid-month.

Islam’s biggest season of the year is the Holy month of Ramadan. Not only do we spend more, but we tend to indulge in almost every aspect of daily living: staying up late, TV, food and shopping. The Author: Reem Asaad is an inspirational Saudi woman. She is a wife, mother, writer and financial adviser. Asaad was ranked the third most powerful Arab Woman in 2012 by Arabian Business Magazine. Email: Nasi7atreem@gmail.com @Nasi7atreem

SOURCE PHOTO:IMARTUAE.COM

• We don’t have to sway off the budget. Instead, plan financially for Ramadan at least two months in advance.

• Limit visits for pressing matters such as cashing or depositing a cheque. Use | online banking for transfers, statements and other needs.

Applying the skills, reasoning critically, solving problems and being an inquirer – asking questions – are the most valuable parts of learning. The most important aspect however that contributes to a successful learner, are that the opportunities significant adults in a child’s life (parents, family members and teachers) provide for our children to help them develop personal attributes. The home and school partnership contributes to individual success. AGS promotes contact between home and school in regards to developing these attributes. Nabulsi Sweets AN INTERVIEW with OSAMA NABULSI Nabulsi Sweets is the go-to destination to satisfy cravings for Arabian sweets. See what Osama Nabulsi, the General Manager, had to say. 26 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015

Osama Nabulsi begins the interview by talking about its history. The founder of the business was Sheikh Hashem Zaki Nabulsi, his father. He pursued his passion of making authentically baked Arabian sweets especially the Nabulsi kunafa. Soon enough, the first store opened in 1982 on Makkah road. The Nabulsi family sweet craft has extended across five generations. Nowadays, Nabulsi is adding a sixth branch to its name in Tahlia Street; it will be the flagship branch due to its size and prime location.

The fact that people from all over the Kingdom come to this specific sweet brand in Jeddah definitely cements its stature as a high quality Arabian sweet shop. As Nabulsi explains, “We care about the taste and the recipes of our products. We maintain these things to keep the quality consistent. Our products are very close to homemade ones. They give the same feel and taste.” He continues, “We are always experimenting with new ingredients to make the products tastier. We even use a special type of ghee, one DOWNLOAD • DISCOVER • INTERACT

that is light so our customers don’t feel heavy after their dessert.” They sometimes even conduct tasting sessions, where customers try new products and give their feedback, which is taken very seriously. What makes Nabulsi such a successful business is their delicious sweets that taste as if they have been made in the comfort of home. Nabulsi owes a huge deal of its success to its loyal workers, a lot of whom have been there for 15 years or more, also all legally under his care.

Adding Nabulsi cheese

However, today it is hard to find competent workmanship that is up to Nabulsi’s standards. Even though it was proven to be hard to integrate women into the business, they plan on involving women at work after setting up the proper accommodating environment Finally, since Ramadan is upon us, Nabulsi is getting ready with our alltime favorites such as cheese, date and cream kunafas, gatayif, along with baklavas.

PAPERMOON Wrapping with Love By Sahrish Ali

The concept was born out of necessity. Gift giving had always been the norm in their family. However, Alomari noticed that they weren’t being presented in an appropriately elegant way, which killed the whole idea of giving. This inspired the idea of Papermoon. Papermoon turns 25 this month. Alomari speaks about the memories that come from such a long history. “The memories that matter most are the simple ones: our first shop, the first few transactions, the first night we stayed up to count the sales and then my husband proudly announcing the SR 300 achievement.”

Nehal Alomari, founder of Papermoon Giftwrapping Company, created a trend of gift giving that adds a different meaning to the concept. 30 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015

Finally, she adoringly recalls the time when their eldest stood as a proud salesman for a week and served customers. So many little memories that really make Papermoon what it is: a place for a group of strangers who are now family to serve many other families.

COURTESY PHOTO

Alomari reminisces about how she and her husband would do last-minute preparations in their one-room warehouse pricing, counting and cleaning products. Her two boys would be running around, excited about all the chaos and sometimes actually helping out.

Challenges

Future Plans

With every new venture there are roadblocks. Alomari mentions the obstacles she faced in the making of Papermoon as mere bumps. “At that time, believe it or not, I never looked at them as obstacles. Perhaps I was too focused on giving my project wings and that motivated me to cut down any obstacles that wouldn’t let it soar.”

There are nine Papermoon branches between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. “For the longest time, Papermoon was like a strong young horse with its bridle in my hands; with me holding it in place while I cared for it and groomed it.”

Every society has its own limitations on its people. “My society did put a few limitations on me, but not to the extent that it hindered my chances of success. Of course, if it weren’t for my husband’s full support, I couldn’t have done it.”

Alomari expressed future plans of serving a larger number of customers and offering products that would satisfy all tastes and needs.

Community Involvement Papermoon has been involved in community betterment for a long time. At Papermoon, all celebrations and promotions are planned with at least one charity organization in mind. CSR is a relatively new venture and they started theirs a couple of years ago with a similar open empowering approach.

Papermoon always encouraged local artists by opening doors of collaboration through their Local Designers program or through occasional custom gift giving promotions. This helps them pave their paths into the real market. They were part of Faisal Sheraiff’s @outlanders on several occasions. At the opening of their flagship store in Bahrain they held an event where invited guests chose a pre-assigned gift for a cancer patient child, self-wrapped it and had it delivered completely anonymously. Papermoon is also the official sponsor of an initiative called @alsoroor_, which is basically making someone happy all year long.

Startup Advice

On Sacrifice and Priorities

Alomari offers some golden advice for those looking to start their own ventures:

Alomari realized the importance of making the right choices from the start. “At the time of creating Papermoon I had two boys and my daughter arrived a couple of years later. The priorities were clear as day for me; family comes first. I deliberately chose to stay within a manageable limit without affecting my priorities.” There were of course long work hours at times and occasional business trips away from home.

1. Before you start a business ask yourself, why? Any sort of business requires commitment. If you are in it for the wrong reasons, you are setting yourself to fail and you might eventually lose your investment. 2. Choose something you’re passionate about. Do not choose because it sells well. How can you manage and develop your business if you do not understand it inside out? 3. Innovate, do not imitate. Do it if it’s your passion, but do it your way. 4. A clean business with clean dealings will be heaven for all your staff, investment and customers. Make yours an art of really serving the consumer and serve to the best of your ability. It all pays off in the end.

32 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015

Alomari works fulltime at her office in Bahrain. She mentions how fortunate she is to have a wonderful team by her side. She expresses how they work all day, but never without fun and happiness all around.

Ramadan for Children Encourage children to immerse themselves in the Ramadan spirit. By Sahrish Ali and Sohila El Saadany

INTRODUCE RAMADAN To start off, you as a parent must teach children about Ramadan so they grasp the concept behind it. It is not only about abstaining from food and drink; it is specially for cherishing the blessings bestowed upon them.

Activity: Celebrate the spirit by asking them to help decorate the house. You can reuse old magazines or papers to make paper lanterns and hanging garlands. Place different Ramadan facts illustrated creatively all around your house.

FASTING They can begin by fasting for only a few hours. By the middle or end of the month they would have enough willpower to fast the entire day. Activity: Help your kids craft a Ramadan calendar where they write down one good deed they did for each day. They could also write down the number of hours they fasted everyday. A large wall calendar made with construction paper and glue would give them a more tangible feel of the month.

READING THE QUR’AN Read the Qur’an with them. Help them recite short verses. You can give them rewards for that. Activity: Make Ramadan bookmarks and have them understand one verse of the Qur’an per day; its lesson or story related to it.

36 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015

KINDNESS Children should be kind all year round. However, explain to them that their extra kindness would beget even more rewards during this special month. Help them understand the importance of donating; they can give away clothes and toys to those in need.

Activity: Make goodie bags and meal packages together with your kids. Further involve them by going to local mosques and places where you can distribute food. SELF-CONTROL They must also learn how to control their temper, so no temper tantrums are allowed. This is a lifetime lesson, not just a one-month thing. Activity: Keep calm, it’s Ramadan. Have your child identify 114 things they’re thankful for to Allah. The number correlates with the number of chapters in the Qur’an. This would help them see the little things that make life joyful.

MATS AND BEADS Let them pick their own prayer mats and beads. They choose their own colors and styles. These will give them the sense of being responsible adults as they can call them their own. Activity: Let them make their own prayer beads by giving them string and beads of their choice.

GOOD DEED TREE Why not build a good deed tree? Each time they do something considerate, they get to write it on the leaves. At the end of the month they will notice how lush the leaves are. They will definitely be proud of that. IFTAR AND SUHOOR Engage your children in preparing iftar and suhoor. Ask them what would they like to have and then allow them to help you around the kitchen.

Activity: It’s a cardboard tree with cardboard branches and green paper leaves. You can even use old papers or newspapers to make the leaves to encourage reusing.

FAMILY TIES Help them call relatives to check up on them and wish them a blessed Ramadan. This will teach them how important family ties are from a young age. Activity: Handmade phone books with relatives’ numbers and a schedule of when to call each would motivate them to get in touch.

Remember that children almost always imitate their parents, so set the best example. DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 37

AMINA ATELIER

Amina Atelier is a unisex casual wear brand made in Jeddah combining a mix of ethnic inspiration with contemporary fashion. Here’s our chat with the creative mind behind the brand. By Zareen Muzaffar

Please tell us about your company?

The brand is dedicated to Dada Amina in her loving memory. She was a hard working and charitable woman who loved to sew during her free time. Growing up my cousins and I would visit her in her room for some tea on occasional afternoons. I recall it was packed with knickknacks that she had collected over the years, along with pillows and tissue box covers that she had sewn. We’d tiptoe inside her colorful room with amusement admiring her collection while she warned us of some of her missing sewing needles. She had lots of character, warmth and kindness and was an influential figure in my childhood may her soul rest in peace.

52 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015

Who’s the creative head behind the designs?

Where can people buy Amina Atelier designs?

Amina Atelier employs CSR. Please tell us more about it.

Tell us about the charity organizations you have worked with.

I am currently the creative head and designer behind the designs but hope to add more designers to the team in the near future.

For each collection we offer a collectable charity item that is made from the excess fabric and reflects the story behind the collection. All proceeds from these items are donated to a chosen local charity organization that also suits the collection’s theme.

Most of the time it is available at HomeGrown Market at the The Store but at the moment it is available to view at the Atelier by appointment.

For the first collection I created voodoo dolls and donated the proceeds to Al Bir Orphanage. As for the second collection titled Amina’s Love Song, I made heart sacks and donated the proceeds to Al Zawaj Org. Mob: +966-561505118 Email: aminaatelier@gmail.com @aminaatelier

Skip Exfoliation

We usually exfoliate our skin twice a week. But I feel it’s better to skip exfoliation if you are breaking out. Don’t Touch and Pick

Some people believe popping pimples is the best way to get rid of them. Ask any doctor and they will tell you otherwise. Squeezing not only causes irritation and flare-ups, it further aggravates pimples.

Choose Cleanser Wisely

There are some cleansers that over dry the skin causing more breakouts. Harsh cleansers strip the skin of its protective barrier leaving it exposed to bacteria that causes pimples.

Please don’t forget squeezing breakouts has more chances of leaving scars on your face.

Recommended: Use a mild cleanser such as La Roche Posay Derma Cleanser or Bioderma’s Sebium cleansing gel; both available at Nahdi Pharmacy and Boots Pharmacy.

No direct link has been established between dairy products and breakouts but dairy does contain components that may stimulate oil glands. The additional androgen hormones in cow’s milk can potentially cause hormonal imbalances in women that lead to breakouts. Next time you break out try cutting out dairy for a week or two and see if it makes a difference.

Spot Treatment

For very mild acne or some breakouts, spot treatments can work wonders. Tea Tree oil at Body Shop or products that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can be used to treat the pimple.

Recommended: Danube or Manuel carry these spot treatments but Nahdi pharmacy specialists can assist you with finding the best one too.

Keep Hair Away

Keep your hair tied and away from your face, especially if you ’re breaking out on the forehead, back or neck. Shampoos and conditioners contain harsh chemicals and fragrances that can be harmful for sensitive areas on your face. 58 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015

Avoid Dairy Products

Increase Water Intake

Water intake helps improve digestion and flushes out the toxins in your body. All this helps in clearing up the skin and gives you a glowing radiance.

Recommended: Replace cow milk with almond milk available at Manuel and Danube.

Clean your Makeup Brushes

Some of us use make up brushes as part of daily makeup routine but we tend to forget the bacteria that gets accumulated in those brushes. Wash your brushes at least once a week and leave them to dry. To wash brushes you can use your cleanser mixed in water. Recommended: Real Technique makeup brushes available at Noura Pharmacy.

Shuraik is seasonal bread associated with Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr in the Muslim world.

66 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015

It is worth mentioning that shuraik, simit and bagels are all close cousins with very minor differences. Their textures are similar to each other as well as the shape and even the preparation process isn’t that different.

STAFF PHOTO/MOHAMED FAWZY

RAMADAN’S BAKED GOODS

It takes a lot of work to achieve the right texture, which is a bit chewy while still soft inside with very light crispiness on the outside. The circular dough with a hole in the middle should be a bit smoky and the sesame seeds generously sprinkled on it compliment its overall taste.

DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 67

Method of Baking Shuraik takes a long time to make, sometimes up to 12 hours. The preparation consists of two crucial stages; first is fermenting and poaching the dough. The second stage is baking by following certain techniques that involve the type of oven being used and whether it is a stone taboona and also the type of fire (wood or gas). The results are obviously shown in the end product. History Shuraik came to Hijaz area in Saudi Arabia’s western region, and was embraced well in Madina. They named it suhairah, which is derived from the Arabic word, suhoor and it stands for the last meal of the evening during the Holy Month of Ramadan. Nowadays, the names shuraik, suhaira and ka’ak refer to the same bread, although there are certain differences. For instance which kind contains chickpeas and which doesn’t. However, the name, shuraik is most popular in the whole region originating from Madina. The name suhaira also comes from Madina, but it is slightly popular in Jeddah. Ka’ak and shuraik are the most popular names in Makkah. 68 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015

Despite a lot of history being written on food, the exact origins of this bread remain unknown. However, after tracking down some leads I found that this bread reached us from the Ottoman Empire via Egypt, specifically from the city of Tokat in Turkey. The Turks have preserved this tradition until today; they bake shuraik during Ramadan annually. Actually they even name it gevrek, which is a close pronunciation of shuraik.

Local Bakeries These days the process of making shuraik is commercially abused. Thankfully, there is one bakery in Jeddah that makes the closest possible taste and texture as the real deal. Forno Bakery, with branches in Al Salamah Street and Hira Street, presents several products that are famous in Madina, including shuraik. I strongly recommend this bakery. As a second recommendation, there’s Hamada Bakery that serves a smaller sized shuraik, and they call it suhaira.

The best way to have shuraik during regular days is to eat it for breakfast while it’s hot and crispy from the outside, along with cheese and red tea. Others prefer having it for Ramadan iftar with fool mudammas, which is a traditional dish made with crushed fava beans. Fool Mudammas

King of Ramadan’s Iftar Table

By Ahmad Mesawa

Mudammas refers to the cooking method where fava

beans are buried inside an oval pot with a small nick, specialized for preparing the fool slowly over low flame for around 12 hours. It is not an actual burying but the conditions in which it is cooked simulate burying something in a dark environment. There are a lot of odd techniques involved in the preparation of this famous dish.

Despite the Central Asian region being the main place of origin of fool, the first recorded use of this dish dates back to pharaohs in Egypt.

Nowadays it’s considered the most popular food in Egypt. It is consumed on a large scale as a main meal for breakfast or even in sandwiches, and most of the time it is eaten for dinner. Egyptian fool is cooked more often as whole pieces and some prefer it partially mashed.

70 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015

SOURCE PHOTO/PHAROAHS: HTTP://ZHURNAL.LIB.RU

The Arabic word, fool stands for fava beans, while mudammas is a Coptic word, which translates to being buried.

Fool mudammas is food for the rich and the poor alike.

DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 71

FOOL MUBAKHAR IN SAUDI ARABIA,

however, it is mostly mashed with very few whole bean pieces. Fool mudammas is served with certain types of bread, like the Afgani tamees or the traditional Ottoman shuraik.

That’s the beauty of living in Hijaz; it brings all flavors of the Muslim world together to form a delicious mix. The art of Hijazi fool doesn’t just stop with bread; many more traditions are adopted from other cultures, like using spices and condiments such as garlic, cumin and olive oil or ghee. Sides are also added, such as pickles, onions, tomatoes, parsley, duggus (parsley in hot chili sauce) and tahini.

Ayman Al Junaid, owner of the four branches of Taibat Al Hijaz, meets his customers’ demand by presenting this dish throughout the year. This is one of the very limited local spots that also have a family section.

We actually went to the extent of making Fool Mubakhar, which is smoking the fool. Ramadan is the most popular time when smoked fool is savored. Fool mubakhar stands for smoked fava beans. The basic technique is to create a tiny pond of oil or ghee in the middle of the fool or in a

tinfoil, then to dunk a little piece ofcharcoal in it and seal the dish tightly for ten minutes. The smoky flavor gives the dish a grilled effect and the feeling is sensational to your taste buds. Changing Lives

More Than One Way As the renowned founder of IMC, Dr. Walid Fitaihi is passionately involved in numerous philanthropic projects. His most prolific one being his show, "Mahiyayi." Are people ever surprised that Dr. Walid Fitaihi— an accomplished medical practitioner and founder of a state of the art medical facility is associated with a show such as Mahiyayi?

Those who are surprised are still living in the old paradigm thinking that a hospital should just deal with treating patients. But at IMC the concept is dedicated towards having a holistic mind, body and soul. Thus, the show Mahiyayi is a natural expansion of the mission of IMC.

What was the primary reason for starting this show? The clear need for helping individuals understand their role towards their mind, body,

76 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015 ADVERTORIAL

heart and soul. In this part of the world there is a lack of such programs.

Your past two seasons have dealt with aspects of science and spirituality along with their significance in one’s life. What can we expect in the third season due to air this Ramadan? This season is what can be called ‘the jewel’ of Mahiyayi so far. In this season, I’m not lecturing, nor am I trying to educate people on what to do, rather it’s a conversation with one’s self. The spotlight is on ego, which everyone has in some form or another. This in reality is your true enemy; if every person understands why ego is their enemy, their lives

would change drastically. My target is to raise the conscious of human beings across the globe. I’m not speaking here only to Gulf citizens or Arabs in general; I’m speaking here to the conscious of every individual worldwide. And to do so, we have plans to air the show in numerous languages.

In which way do you believe that Mahyayi has added value to people’s lives? We do get a slight understanding of how it affects people’s lives through the responses we receive on social media, and I thank Allah (SWT) for guiding us. Moreover, I believe that the long-term effects of Mahyayi on people’s lives are much more significant.

How does your experience as a successful entrepreneur help your work as a philanthropist? What upsets me is that the majority of CEOs have very good companies which conduct their activities in a highly professional manner, but when it comes to nonprofits or charitable projects, they don’t function as efficiently. It’s almost as if such activities are secondary. I’ve been trying to instill professionalism in such projects on a personal level.

Looking ahead, what are your future philanthropic plans?

We are trying to build an academy as a spin-off of Mahiyayi in which we plan

to have a collection of books and prepare a set of knowledgeable teachers. I also run an Islamic cultural center in Boston, which is now being expanded to house a university by the name of Imam Institution. It will prepare Imams to communicate with the people of the Book. Moreover, we plan on establishing a non-profit medical school in Jeddah, which will emphasize on bringing out a new generation of doctors. On top of that we are expanding the IMC hospital hoping it would further revolutionize health services and patient care.

The instructors there are more than efficient, they truly work hard to help members become the best versions of themselves.

It is with Arena’s aid that I lost a lot of weight in three months; I lost fat and gained muscles. Don’t make the mistake of overeating and eating food that lacks essential nutrition, such deepfried foods, high-sugar and high-fat foods and high-fat cooked foods. This will only cause an adverse effect to the training and cause you to become lethargic and lose motivation.

Keep the Weight Off

F O R E V E R!

1 Never Skip Breakfast

By Maya Daaboul

3 Keep Track Keeping a journal handy will help stop you from reverting back to old habits, keeping you aware and conscious of each and every move. How many times have you exercised today? What and when did you eat today? Did you slip up on a certain occasion? Make sure you also keep note of your weekly-weighins to monitor your progress.

Skipping breakfast will only make you eat more and pile up more calories throughout the day. Instead, have your breakfast within one hour of waking to jump-start your metabolism and provide you with the energy boost you need for the day.

2 Lead an Active Lifestyle Along with your regular, sustained exercise, keeping an active lifestyle is a must to help counterbalance the drop in metabolic rate that usually accompanies weight loss. For example, take the stairs and dedicate more time playing sports instead of video games. 82 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015

Congratulations! You have now reached the weight you have strived for BUT how will you maintain your new figure?

4 Go for a Balanced and Realistic Eating Plan The key for weight maintenance is to consume fewer calories compared to the amount consumed pre-weight loss. Watch for your portion sizes and opt for low energy dense foods such as soups, fruits, vegetables and whole cooked grains when preparing your meals to control satiety and limit energy intake.

6 Plan for Setbacks 5 Dining Out Avoid appetizers including bread, olives, nuts and butterthey will only fill you up and add unnecessary calories. Start off with a salad and order the dressing on the side to control the amount added. For dessert, go for either a fruit based option or skip it for tea or coffee instead. If you insist on something sweet, share it with someone to have up to three bites only.

Whether it’s stress, not enough support around you or lack of motivation, know that new habits are not easy to adopt but rest assured it will only get easier with time. Have a coping plan set in place such as meditating, talking to a friend or simply taking a walk for some fresh air. Put in place a strategy that will help keep you focused and on track, deterring you from resorting back to food and bad habits for comfort.

By Mohammed Mirza

84 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015

Tell us a little bit about your background.

I am a Saudi national and was born and brought up in Saudi Arabia. I have a BA in linguistics from King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah and a high diploma in Islamic Studies from Umm Al Qura University. I was an English teacher for 15 years, a public relations manager in an MNC for seven years and then four years a director of Human Resources in a mining company. And I have continued to be an Imam for the past 28 years.

SOURCE PHOTO/ PBS.TWIMG.COM

Famous for appearing on TV and Islamic conferences around the world, Sheikh Assim Al Hakeem is one of the most renowned Saudi Islamic speakers today.

What is the best way to understand the Qur’an? The best way to understand the Qur’an is through the sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) as he was a loving manifestation of what Allah wants from us. It would add a tremendous advantage when a person knows Arabic as non-Arabs rely and depend entirely on the understanding of the translator, which is not always correct.

What are some of the common mistakes Muslims commit during the Holy Month?

Amongst the most famous mistakes is when people refrain from eating and drinking, which is normally halal yet indulge in haram activities such as gossiping, dealing with riba (interest), watching movies, listening to music or engaging in inappropriate behavior such as fighting or swearing. Others may have split personalities; they are good Muslims while fasting, and totally different after breaking the fast.

How can we incorporate Islam more in our daily lives even after the Holy Month?

We need to understand that the Lord of Ramadan is the same Lord of the rest of the months. We must worship Him and obey His commands, as He is all hearing and all seeing. Not a single thing takes place in this universe without His knowledge.

How can we make nonMuslims see the true teachings of Islam?

The best way of portraying Islam and communicating it to non-Muslims is to be real Muslims by walking the talk.

A lot of the non-Muslims are disappointed when they read about Islam, and then look at the reality of Muslims nowadays. They have a lot of respect for Islam, but not for the Muslims. If you look at the largest Muslim country in the world in terms of population; Indonesia, you will find that not a single soldier has set foot there and they accepted Islam, as Muslim traders treated them in an Islamic way. Compare this today, where we have stand up comedies exposing how Muslims are so unrelated to their religion. Web: assimalhakeem.net assim.l.alhakeem

PURPOSE OF THE SHATHRAWAN

Abdullah Ibn Al Zubair (RA) built the shathrawan (the marble foundation circling the Kaa’ba) during his rule over Makkah. It was built in order to protect the Kaa’ba against flooding during the rainy season and also to keep the cloth coverings of the Kaa’ba, or the kiswah, safe. Fifty-five rings of copper were used to attach the coverings of the Kaa’ba to the shathrawan as a means of further protection.

They had been the traditional key keepers of the Kaa’ba for centuries, and the Prophet (PBUH) confirmed them in that role till the end of time by these words “Take it, O Bani Talha, eternally up to the Day of Resurrection, and it will not be taken from you unless by an unjust, oppressive tyrant.” And to this very day, the keys to the Kaa’ba remain in the hands of the same family. 88 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015

BECOME AN ACTIVE CITIZEN

DO SOMETHING! There’s a growing social awareness movement going on about major issues in today’s age. Consequently, there is a need to take a stance on becoming an active citizen in your immediate and extended social environment. By Zeyad Haj Bakry

As members of our communities, we see a lot of problems around us, yet only few do something to fix them. Funnily enough, we keep complaining and blaming others. Becoming an active citizen means that each one of us gets out of our comfortzones to tackle social issues, which results in a solution that benefits the overall society. 90 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015

So how does one become an active citizen? Social responsibility is at the core of this concept. Any act that fixes a society-level issue is active citizenship. Why don’t we get a little out of our way for the poor and less fortunate people in our community? These are just little examples of how a person can become an active citizen. Change doesn’t happen overnight, it’s gradual and in small steps. Instead of complaining about dirty roads, take a stand and involve the community in cleaning them up. If potholes in neighborhood streets annoy you, call Riyadh Municipality (940); tell them about these conditions and follow-up with them.

networks to communicate about an issue and let others participate.

The other aspect to becoming an active citizen is communication and it is also vital for problem solving. Let others know about problems the society is facing, create groups to educate public about the negative impact of these social problems and encourage people to take initiatives.

Saudi Arabia is one of the top countries in the world in social networks use, and it would work wonders if people would use these networks creatively to inform people on how to contribute to their society. The ALS “ice-bucket challenge” was a perfect example of how active citizens have used social

Active citizens should also take responsibilities for their actions. We can’t tell people about the dangers of reckless driving and then do the complete opposite. We can’t expect everyone to become active citizens overnight, but here’s a thought:

A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.

A WALK THROUGH

OMAN

Travel gets you in touch with yourself and gives you perspective on the world outside your own. Here’s an account of my long overdue trip to Oman. By Sahrish Ali

This was my first solo trip after over fourteen years. My friend greeted me at the airport upon my arrival along with an Omani driver by the name of Ahmed. He proved to be an excellent tour guide during my week there. We made way to our lodgings at Bareeq Al Shatee, which is an apartment and mall complex. Muscat was one of the first inhabited cities of Oman. The Babylonians and Assyrians settled there to control the trade route linking Asia to the Mediterranean shores. Omani empire later expanded

94 DESTINATION JEDDAH JUNE 2015

to include the cities of the African coast. Hence the local population is very diverse and full of people who settled from different eras. Sultan Qaboos bin Said brought a dawn of a modern renaissance in the Sultanate. A visitor to the cities of Oman would observe the efforts to preserve the traditional architecture, characterized by its simple lines and color scheme. It avoids high rises, but maintains an understated elegance of its own. During the first day, my friend and I went for a walk along the coastline surrounding area and then to the cinema. It was my first 3D cinema experience. We watched Jupiter Ascending and geeked out over the amazing CGI and women with empowering roles in movies.

Grand Mosque of Qaboos

Close to the road leading to the heart of the capital, Muscat, stands the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Bawshar District, like a radiant lighthouse attracting its visitors to interact with the spirit of Islam as a religion, science and civilization. Its construction took six years and its total capacity is about 20,000 worshipers. The corridors seem like a secure wall surrounding the mosque’s building and meet through the five minarets that delineate the borders of the mosque’s location and symbolize the five pillars of Islam. The mosque’s prayer hall floor is topped with a single piece Persian carpet composed of 1,700 million knots which

took more than two years to make, covering an area of 4,200 square meters. Twentyeight different colors made from plant or natural dyes, in varying gradations, are used in this carpet’s weave. Non-Muslims are allowed to visit the mosque every day, except for Friday, from 8:30 until 11 a.m. Visitors are asked to dress modestly and in a way befitting places of worship. One of the many beautiful sights to see.

Souq Muttrah

Every place has a distinctive flavor and every city has a market that relates its stories, embraces its history and accompanies its evolution. Souq Muttrah is one of the oldest markets in Oman, wdating back to 200 years. The market starts at a gate facing the Sea of Oman and the Muttrah Corniche. The souk is a prototype of old eastern markets, characterized by narrow winding alleys roofed with wood.

The Omanis call it the Market of Darkness due to its myriad alleys and roads lined by shops that block the sun during the day. The Muttrah Souq is

Most of my work hours were spent at Caribou Coffee. The place has very cool and homey vibes. There are hand-drawn doodles all over the place; on the walls, napkins and cups. They present you with a question of the day when you enter and if you get it right, you get a free drink.

Doodles everywhere at the Caribou Cafe.

Al Quram Beach

This lies in Al Quram in the heart of Muscat and extends over a large area. A number of hotel chains are built next to it, such as Hotel Muscat InterContinental and Crowne Plaza. This beach is considered

one of the busiest in Muscat due to its location near shopping centers and restaurants. Walking enthusiasts can enjoy the boardwalk along the beach and then rest on the numerous chairs and umbrellas scattered throughout the place.

I said my goodbyes on the fifth day and headed towards the airport. Fortunately the airport had Caribou Coffee. Walking on the beach with clear blue waters and collecting seashells on the shore is one of my favorite memories of Oman. It’s a place you go to wind down from the hustle and bustle of city life.

TUESDAY MARKET TREASURE HUNT AT ABHA’S SOUQ AL THULATHA By Elizabeth Davis

The market is open seven days a week, but vendors and crowds swell on Tuesday, which is how the market got its day-of-the-week moniker. Located in the Al Muftaha district off King Khaled Street, the market sits adjacent to the Asir Tourism office and the Al Muftaha Art Village. The circular-shaped souq is flanked by produce vendors that line the surrounding side streets with boxes and crates brimming with regional fruits, vegetables and herbs. Ripened vibrantly-hued mangoes, grapes, tomatoes

and eggplant are among the most common selection of produce for sale but shoppers can also find less pedestrian items like mangosteens, figs, leeks and even small containers of lichens, frankincense and myrrh. A few vendors sell fresh chickens, which are plucked and slaughtered on-site, so it’s recommended that the faint-ofheart steer clear of this area. The main market area is down a few modest stairs which open up to a corral of shops with two rows of free-standing shops in the middle.

When in the market for unique gifts or locally made home décor pieces, a day trip to Abha’s Souq al Thulatha or Tuesday market is a must.

Whether you’re interested in whipped or creamed honey or a kilo of sticky sweetener to add to your chamomile tea, prepare yourself for a bit of sticker shock. Prices range from SR 40 to SR 600. For visitors interested in learning more about the region’s precious nectar, spend the day chatting-up the vendors to learn more about the fragrance, color and consistency of the world’s greatest and most expensive honey. Moving beyond the honey, shoppers interested in handicrafts, jewelry and home goods should stick to the vendors in the outer loop,

as the two center aisles of vendors feature mostly textiles, apothecary-like goods and clothing. Beautifully crafted clay pots and traditional tandoori ovens are sold throughout the market at several vendors with some surfaces colorfully painted with flowers or tribal patterns. Large gourds, traditionally used for water, are adorned with colorful rope and also make great home décor pieces. Bedouin teapots with various shades of patina can be used as home accent pieces, adding a rich dimension to a house’s interior. From petite to grand,

Upon entry, an impressive assemblage of honey traders greet shoppers. Asir honey is world-famous and honey at the Tuesday Market trades hands much like stockbrokers on the New York Stock Exchange. It’s a hotly traded commodity. Not your run-of-the-mill supermarket syrup dispensed from a plastic honey bear, Asir’s tawny humectant fetches top dollar and with good reason. The highly prized Sidr honey has been used throughout history for many medicinal purposes. This rare honey is thought to cure everything from liver disease, skin infections, respiratory illnesses to obesity. DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 99

the variety of brass teapots for sale is plentiful, but can take a little hunting to find something unique or antique. As ubiquitous as Bedouin teapots, handwoven straw baskets are available at many shops. From small and brightly colored boxes with leather tops to large bucket-shaped handbags, there is a strawwoven item for every taste. A short stretch of shops cater to women, and their goods are worth a nice long look. If the shopper can look beyond the made in China necklaces and scarves they are likely to find some truly unique jewelry, but it takes effort. Many of the larger, older Bedouin necklaces and head ornaments get top dollar, so don’t expect to get a steal. Be prepared to pay a fair market price for

jewelry with real stones or made of silver. You can find hand-strung necklaces made of coral, turquoise and a variety of quartz, but it takes patience and time. Smile and ask questions. You will find some very unique pieces for sale if you know what to look for. A good selection of henna powders, Kohl liners, primitive clay vases and locally made animal skin drums are also found in the women section. It may take a full day of perusing stalls, but Tuesday Market offers the opportunity to find one-of-a-kind items, as well as learn more about Asir’s people and history. One of the best ways to learn more about the world around you is to venture into your local market and have fun.

HISTORIC SAUDI

Al Amarah Palace in Linah

Built in 1935, Al Amarah Palace resides in the small town of Linah which is 105 kilometers south of the city of Rafha. The modest palace is one of the scanty tourist attractions in the Northern Borders region.

A mosque stands within the secure confines of the palace that is made from palm trees. In addition to the mosque, the palace also houses an ancient well.

HOW TO GET THERE Coordinates: 28.761059, 43.737916

By Mohammed Mirza

Linah’s souk was a vibrant trade center in the past, sitting in the middle of the trade route between the Najd region and Iraq. King Abdulaziz commissioned Al Amarah Palace in this ancient town soon after the unification of the country. It carries inscriptions that bear testimony to its history and construction year.

Four soaring turrets guard its four corners, while a robust wooden door on the southern side of the palace secures the mud enclosure. In the center of the palace there is a bailey, which has private rooms and stables encompassing it. The number of rooms in the palace amount to a whopping 52.

Built using mud and stone, over the years the palace has fell into disrepair, however it has recently been restored.
