Tory support for Heathrow now entirely unacceptable I

n the light of Heathrow’s latest shocking expansion plans, Spelthorne Labour Group has insisted the ruling Tory councils in Spelthorne and Surrey, must think again and review its position on airport expansion. Cllr Sue Doran, Labour Leader on Spelthorne Council said the group would like to see the Spelthorne Conservatives unreservedly supporting all their residents of all ages, in a renewed fight to protect all aspects of their health and lives from the impact caused by the proposed expansion of Heathrow and the infrastructure required to support expansion.

‘This is no longer just about a third runway,’ said Cllr Doran, ‘it’s about enormous on-going disruption to our whole community for at least thirty years.’ Last week Heathrow Airport presented its new consultation and explanation of the impact on the local area. Labour says it is imperative that Conservative councillors stand up for local people and not just big business as every part of Spelthorne will be adversely affected. ‘Heathrow themselves, admit we can expect airport construction work to be going on 24 hours a day, seven days a week,’ noted Cllr Jenny Vinson (Staines South) – this will gener-

ate a very large increase in the number of lorries in the Staines area and across Spelthorne.’ The report says this will impact on the whole borough, with air quality being affected by ‘dust and vehicle emission.’ This is an environmental disaster developing before our eyes,’ argued Cllr Veena Siva (Staines) affecting all aspects of our physical and mental health. ‘As a mother, I’m especially worried about the impact on my young daughter’s health and other children in the borough.’ A newly elected councillor, Veena added, ‘I am utterly staggered that the Tory Spelthorne Borough Council is supporting the third runway despite the litany of adverse effects on Spelthorne including the environment, noise pollution, physical and cognitive wellbeing and lack of compensation for the residents to name but a few!!” Cllr John Doran (Stanwell North) said, ‘There are two primary schools and a children’s

centre within a few hundred yards of the southern runway as it is.’ ‘Under Heathrow’s plans the perimeter road becomes a six lane ‘motorway’ and the village gets a 24,000 space car park on its border as well.’ Labour claims Spelthorne is getting all the negatives and no compensation for years of misery, traffic jams and negative impacts. ‘It’s unacceptable for Heathrow to say Stanwell and Stanwell Moor do not qualify for compensation from Heathrow. It just doesn’t make sense,’ complained Surrey County Councillor Robert Evans (Stanwell and Stanwell Moor). ‘None of Spelthorne has been included in the Wider Property Offer Zone (WPOZ) and yet this area is going to take the full brunt of the expansion with huge traffic, noise and health impacts for years to come.’ ‘Labour is standing up for local people, families, children and older people as they face a major challenge and potential catastrophe.’

Stone deaf, he, the composer of nine masterly (this was his last) symphonies, had no self-pity. ‘I shall hear in heaven.’ It is tempting after this obscenity to wish thankful good riddance to ‘Leaver’. The Trumpite Tory Boris Johnson crew. Such louts shame our nation. But where is the justice in requiring ‘Remainers’ such as my family (including an awaited great ‘European grandchild) to be shackled to such lowlife and thrown over the same abyss? Though proud to present Labour s case, this letter goes far beyond that duty. I am sure decent ‘Leavers’ will share my shock. Yours truly, Harold Trace Parkland Grove, Ashford. Sir º‘I am the most fanatical EU remainer ever.’ ‘I am a raving Euro-federalist … of a most violent dyspeptic and incurable disposition.’ Who wrote this? Clue: He published the above in his book ‘Life in the Fast Lane when he was the pro-EU ‘GQ motoring magazine correspondent. Answer: Boris Johnson, your choice for prime minister! Possible explanation: When he pledged ‘Leave or die in October’ maybe he meant 2039? Yours Baffled (Name and address supplied).

Middletons Moanings 127 Sir, The year is 2023 “Darling Boris” has been head of the Government now for four years, and in that time has made some radical changes to the British way of life. It was amazing how he almost single-handed managed to convince members of Wimbledon, Royal Ascot and the steering Committee of Henley Regatta to complacently accept some of his new innovations. In future all three organisations will only be selling food provided for by local food banks. Strawberries and cream have been completely out-lawed. Anyone found consuming Pimms (of all numbers), will be liable for three months in prison. He has set up a City of London special “Slush Bank”, which encourages overseas investors to accumulate any ill-gotten funds, criminal profits from nefarious schemes such as prostitution, people trafficking, and provision of class a drugs. Already Mr. Putin holds one of the Prime accounts at the bank with a swift deposit of some $52 billion U.S. dollars. The new President of the United States Mr. Donald Trump has had his recent attempt to discredit him outlawed by the Senate in a ploy to impeach him. This huge case provided Mr. Trump with a lump sum of $182 Billion compensation, these funds also seem destined for the coffers of the “Slush Bank” whose motto is “You deal! — We steal”. Meanwhile the ever popular Nigel Farage has at last found recognition as the “Slush Bank” has produced millions of postage stamps with his head printed on them instead of the Queen. George Middleton.

Sir Kwasi Kwarteng, Spelthorne’s MP, has chosen as next PM the degenerate charlatan Boris Johnson. So has the unstable Donald Trump, US president. So has Vladimir Putin, Russian leader. Their agenda? To weaken the EU and in Trump’s case to hasten Britain’s relegation two the 51st state of America. In several US states, the Ku Klux Klan terrorise black people. And in many more women are relegated to Hitler’s KKK model, fit only for kitchen, church membership and child production. Johnson s behaviour is not entirely different. Kwasi Kwarteng has the intelligence and the historical grasp to be well aware of the far better benefit of our country to be welcome in the 28 nation Euro partnership. Every one of his Tory party leaders, from Churchill to Theresa May and rival Jeremy Hunt were staunch remainers. Trump describes the Klan murderers as ‘good people’. Kwarteng supported the ‘hostile environment’ and was official Tory party defender of the organised persecution of 13000 ‘Windrush’ elderly, blameless ‘black British’ residents for decades. It is the worst scandal in our history. Deportation, detention, loss of jobs, denial of access to NHS and premature loss of sanity was the consequence. KKK on British soil. All backed by Johnson for votes. How Kwasi Kwarteng could have used his native gifts of wealth and brain to stand or support a nobler candidate. Mr Kwarteng is still young enough and talented enough to bring back the once envied Conservative party of Churchill, Eden and Macmillan. Yours Harold Trace Spelthorne Labour Party.

Close Bronzefield women’s prison Sir The size of our prison population, 84,000, is at an all-time high. Its cost at £46000 per offender per year is gigantic. Its re-offending rate, after Tory incompetent minister Grayling reforms breaks all records. The squalid state of jails, if imposed on animals, would be stopped by the RSPCA. If a group now lobbing MPs succeeds, a start to civilisation will return. ‘Women in Prison’ notes that Holloway Prison has been sold for £80 million. It urges that as a start, spending plans to use it for a new jail will be scrapped. Let other jails, such as Bronzefield, also be shut down. Instead, say WIP, invest in probation officers, women’s centres, addiction counse3llors and mental health access. Stop welfare cuts. 85% of women prisoners have committed non-violent offences. Women prisoners are almost all among the poorest in the land. ‘Porridge’ is not for the posh. Boris Johnson’s screaming, object throwing, breach of the peace, and affray woman friend was never likely to be prosecuted. She is an upper class Tory activist. Johnson himself faced no charges of obstructing the police enquiries when he produced back-dated lovey dovey photographs of the pair, to mislead TV viewers and Tory members. Driven by debt, ‘universal discredit’ benefit removal after their second child (Johnson admits sometimes to five, sometimes to six) many were driven to prostitution to feed their children. Punishment, often at the hands of a violent partner, they have no further need of, Basic humanity and financial commonsense support the WIP cause. Yours G Gray Feltham Hill Road, Ashford.

FROM HEROES TO ZERO Sir, Such is the appalling state of our nation’s values that we are now faced with the prospect of a scruffy, foul-mouthed oaf in the form of Boris Johnson vying for the position of Prime Minister. No politician should ever resort to using the ‘F’ word in public, let alone in numerous, inane outbursts. Anybody proposing even 20 years ago that this disgraceful scenario could be seriously contemplated would have been considered suitable for admission to a lunatic asylum. What has happened to the morality which governed public life in Britain after the War? During WW2 and in the immediate post-War years two eminent statesmen defined the spirit of that age – Winston Churchill and Clement Attlee. Churchill and Attlee had both served in the First World War and they worked together in the War Cabinet from 1940. These were two exceptional men, one Conservative and the other Labour. They had the experience, wisdom and ability to accept the challenge of protecting our country. Churchill became a founding father of the EU and Attlee became our greatest post-War Prime Minister. Both politicians had their faults but it was then recognised that public service demanded, at the very least, an observance of traditional social etiquette, a maintenance of good manners and a defence of ordinary human decency. A gutter-mouthed product of our degenerate, unchristian media such as Boris Johnson is the very antithesis of these men. How have British morals fallen so far? Name and Address Supplied

WHAT - NO CONSULTATION? Sir, I was absolutely flabbergasted to see that Ashford is not included in the current final series of consultations on Heathrow expansion. Shouldn’t the company be consulting all communities affected? It seems Heathrow now want to overfly Ashford. As a result local residents surely have a right to express themselves on this and indeed on the many other issues relating to the proposed 3rd runway. The time is now WI tell John McDonnell

WI members from Harlington WI have travelled to Parliament to meet with their local MP, John McDonnell, to call for him to back efforts to halt climate change and pass ambitious new laws benefiting people and wildlife. Sarah Wilson, Anna East and Alison Fremantle made the journey to London on Wednesday 26 June to join more than 15,000 people from every UK constituency – including school children, nuns, farmers, doctors and surfers – urging MP’s to back action on climate change and plastic pollution. ‘The Time is Now’ mass lobby was organized to call on politicians to put in place policies to end the UK’s contribution to climate change and ensure an upcoming Environment Bill includes ambitious legal requirements to improve air quality, protect wildlife and tackle plastic pollution. Sarah, Anna and Alison who are members of Middlesex Federation of WI Public Affairs committee and Sarah is a Climate Change Ambassador said: The climate crisis is not something that will wait and it was amazing to see so many people from so many walks of life unite to call on our politicians to take urgent action on the issue. The mass meeting, which was held in the area surrounding the Houses of Parliament, was organised by campaign groups The Climate Coalition and Greener UK. The two coalitions consist of more than 130 organisations representing over 15 million people – including the WI. John McDonnell, Member of Parliament in Hayes and Harlington, added: Climate Change is no 1 priority of all the Labour Departments His is the Treasury, the most powerful and he has meetings with a wide range of representatives from Industry and it is a key part of discussions. He described the Green Industrial revolution which Labour fully support and will increase use of solar, water, wave, wind energy sources. Their aim is 60% of electricity and heat comes from renewable sources and described use of Barrage energy used in Mersey river. With regard to the Environment Bill he would make amendments and described many examples of working behind the scenes, Cross party work that was effective. There are many local issues eg: fracking, Labour are adamantly against this. On being asked about pollution that the development of the third runway would generate during its construction. John’s response was that he did not think the Third Runway would go ahead as the legal arguments against it are so strong. The lobby was held following an announcement by the government that it will set in law a target of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases to ‘net zero’ by 2050. Campaigners at the lobby called on politicians to support measures aimed at achieving the goal. This would mean gases emitted by cars, planes, buildings and farms would have to be cut and not exceed the amount that could be removed from the air through measures such as tree-planting. Scientists say this is necessary to avoid temperature rising more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels,

beyond which climate change will make floods and heatwaves worse in the UK and jeopardise food and water supplies for poor communities overseas. The organisations involved in the lobby argue that emissions should reach net zero by 2045 because of the need for urgent cuts and because of falling costs and technological developments. Lynne Stubbings, Chair of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes, said: “Climate change is the single biggest threat to the people and places we love, both here in Britain and overseas. “Hundreds of WI members travelled to Westminster to ask their MPs for urgent action on climate and protecting the environment. “We need cleaner air, healthier soils and oceans that are havens for marine life. “In order to safeguard our world for the future, government needs to make its net-zero pledge a reality and commit to ending plastic pollution by 2042.” Neil Thorns, Chair of The Climate Coalition, said: “We’ve seen with the government’s commitment to a net zero target how much of a difference people can make when they speak up on an issue. “Now our politicians have to back the policies which will meet that target, as well as pass the laws we need to protect wildlife and clean up our rivers. “The people who have travelled to Westminster to speak to their MPs are going to play a hugely important role in persuading them to do this.”

Hillingdon Council wins top award for children’s services

Hillingdon Council has won the top award for innovation in children’s services at the Municipal Journal (MJ) achievement awards. The awards event took place in central London on Wednesday 26 June. The MJ is a leading information, intelligence and news resource for local authorities. It’s prestigious annual awards event recognises the very best local government services, and is judged by influential commentators from the private and public sectors. The council’s AXIS project (so named because it supports young people at a crossroads in their lives) is making a real difference to children at risk of exploitation, and is fast becoming a beacon of good practice for local authorities and the police. AXIS collates,

A WASTE OF MONEY Sir, The Opposition’s idea to create a new Spelthorne Ministry of Propaganda (sorry, Sandra, “a new role for Communications and Social Media”, your report page 6) seems to me to be a waste of money, but otherwise your new Staines South Councillor correspondent (page 2) has a good point. Do what her newish colleagues in Richmond have done, and involve every Councillor in decision-making by having cross-Party committee scrutiny of all aspects of Council governance. Of course, the majority Party will hold sway, but that’s what elections are all about. The relatively recent and entirely sensible streamlining of Spelthorne’s internal administration lends itself easily to having a committee to oversee each branch. Overarching and rather grandiose Cabinet portfolios such as “Community Wellbeing and Housing” and “Economic Development, Customer Service, Estate and Transport” simply unsimplify the process of delivering high quality local services for local people. Please remember that Spelthorne is a District Council, with very limited powers. Yours faithfully, Chris Frazer, Camilla Close, Cavendish Road, Sunbury

organises and applies information in a way that helps to identify young people at risk of exploitation and informs meaningful interventions delivered by skilled practitioners. Data mapping is the ‘engine’ driving the AXIS programme, and is seen as the future of targeted intervention and joint commissioning to keep more children safe and free from statutory intervention. Judges looked for councils that had developed partnerships with an integrated and joinedup approach, delivering forward-thinking services and demonstrable positive impact for local children, young people and families. Cllr David Simmonds, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, said: “I’m delighted that the AXIS project has been recognised for tremendous benefits it delivers. We have longsince recognised that multi-agency working is the best way to safeguard our children and young people from exploitation of all types. “It was the single minded dedication and commitment of managers and practitioners in our youth offending service that took it from being a good idea to being a powerful analytical tool for shaping interventions for vulnerable young people. “Ultimately, this award recognises that vulnerable children and young people in Hillingdon are receiving the level of help and support they need and deserve.” The AXIS project represents a sea change for Hillingdon, specifically in terms of exploitation, as the council can

now pinpoint where support is required much earlier and target

its community safety and young people’s services more effectively.

FAMILY FUN DAY AT CLARENDON SCHOOL A family fun day was staged at Clarendon School, Ashford, on Saturday 29th June. The event was organised by ADHD Surrey UK and 195 Staines (PWRR) Army Cadet Force and funded by Heathrow Community Fund. It brought together Spelthorne families who have children with Autism and ADHD.. The Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Spelthorne attended and spent the day walking around talking to families about what it is like for them and their experiences. Katie Baker, of ADHD Surrey UK told the Villager: ‘We had fun activities for the

children to take part in such as football, tag rugby, egg and spoon races, sack races and face painting. We also had a family BBQ and refreshment stand. ‘All the families that attended had a great day and it was lovely to see the children relaxed and enjoying themselves with other children that they felt comfortable with.’

So what’s this all about? It’s about trust and integrity and ultimately having had enough of Heathrow Airport’s false news and broken promises. On the 18th June 2019, Heathrow Airport released statutory information on what expansion means for our community and we are shocked. Not only is the impact much greater than we have ever been led to believe, we are also being offered derisory compensation and precious little else. We, perhaps naively, trusted Heathrow’s senior management and the assurances they have given us. They portrayed themselves as trustworthy, having the best interest of ours village and neighbouring communities. We now realise this was purely lip service and PR spin – for Heathrow Airport it’s business as usual, increasing their £3 billion company turnover at local community expense. Despite Heathrow Airport’s claim that they have engaged with local communities and that their plans align with the local aspirations, the truth is that we find ourselves at the epicentre of an airport dumping ground for a host of unsavoury pollution generating activities, allegedly critical to the airports expansion. Heathrow Airport’s true expansion plans show that an elevated motorway access roads will cut across the northern edge of our village, serving the world’s largest car park to the east, and a huge dirty-water treatment plant will obliterate our moorlands to the west. Moreover, the plan also surrounds us with construction sites for decades and intensifies by 25,000 flights per year on the current two runways even before the third ever gets operational. It is clear that Heathrow Airport has kept us in the dark locally whilst nationally it has self-professed its ‘sustainability’ credentials. There is nothing sustainable about polluting our very existence. Heathrow Airport also has the audacity to suggest that somehow, our community will be better off under their expansion plans. Shame on you Heathrow Airport!

Proposal for White House Hostel Kingston Rd Staines planning application 19/00815/FUL Please can I ask residents to raise concerns and issues with regard to this planning application so that all views can be considered and discussed with planning officers. HGV impact There is increasing concern locally regarding the speed and loading of HGVs using local waste sites and the detrimental impact on our roads and quality of life. Please could you advise details of any HGV that appears to be in breach of suitable driving/operating behaviour. Environment May I sincerely thank the residents that have been watering our recently planted trees on our greens and verges in Ashford, Staines and Laleham during the hot weather. The success of our ongoing tree planting programme is dependent on a true partnership between the Spelthorne Tree Wardens and ourselves as we look to improve air quality, create wildlife habitat and soften

What makes all this worse is that senior managers at Heathrow Airport, from the very top, have consistently assured us, our MP Kwasi Kwarteng as well as our Borough Council, that we would have a world-class compensation package befitting the impact that expansion would have on the fabric and cohesion of our village community and our well-being. Below are a few of the realities of expansion, • Increased aircraft noise. • More aircraft movements = More noise. • Increased taxis using our village as a rank • Increased HGVs using village as a rat run. • The tarmacing of our green spaces. • Moorland used to filter polluted water. • Our fields turned into construction sites. • Europe’s biggest car park 100m from village. All of the above creates additional blight, health and safety concerns, 24h-work, noise and disruption for already hugely impacted by the Heathrow Airport. Mortgage Adviser - Resident Quote I’m arranging a straight forward re-mortgage for someone on Stanwell Moor. The house value has dropped from £450K to £390K, valuers comment “airport and road traffic”. Will make resale difficult. To sum up, according to Heathrow, the above is not disruptive, the above does not impact our quality of living and the above is not compensated for. Heathrow pride themselves as a community friendly airport. It would seem this is questionable. SMRA Chairman, Jim McIlroy said “We are only a small community, but we stand in solidarity with the communities from all around Heathrow’s perimeter that will be adversely impacted by this £30 billion plus expansion. We call upon the future Prime Minister (whoever that may be) and the new Secretary of State for Transport, to uphold and safeguard the interests of Stanwell Moor residents”.

and enhance our streets in our local area. Floral baskets will continue to be provided as requested by residents. Community pride I have been heartened by the letters reflecting the value that we place on our community - we care about where we live, how our area looks and how we behave towards each other. Residents have written about Ashford, Staines and Laleham and the desire to look after our local area. I would be grateful if you would contact me with any issues, concerns or suggestions for improvements denise.turnerstewart@surreycc.gov.uk 07970 350473 I hope to hear from you and thank you for your support. Heathrow holding rooms require better facilities In its annual report on the short-term holding facilities, the Heathrow Airport IMB welcomes the marked improvements to the physical conditions in the holding rooms during the year since Mitie C&C took over the contract, but these facilities still fail to provide satisfactory overnight sleeping accommodation at a time when lengths of detention for some people have become unacceptably long.

• Over nine months, 1609 people were kept in a holding room for more than 12 hours, and a small number for over 24 hours. People seeking political asylum are likely to be detained for longer periods, frequently overnight. Some detainees are held for two hours or more in the arrivals halls before being admitted to a holding room. When Border Force staff are fully stretched dealing with large numbers at passport control, those being detained have even longer to wait. • Without fresh air and natural light, the holding rooms are unsuitable for the detention of children, whether with their families or unaccompanied, beyond the very briefest period. In the same nine months nearly 1500 children, either in family groups or unaccompanied, spent time in the holding rooms, some of them for twelve hours or more. • Despite recent improvements there continue to be concerns about the facilities available, when mentally ill people have to be detained. • The Home Office has still failed to find any solution to the problem of detained passengers not being allowed to take medication in their possession. This can be seriously detrimental to an individual’s health. It is unacceptable that this situation has continued for three years without a satisfactory outcome. IMB Chair, Angela Taylor said: “Overall we have found many detention and escort staff to be caring and sympathetic to the detainees they have to manage, including vulnerable individuals and families. However, the holding rooms can never be a friendly environment, especially for those individuals who are waiting for long periods, are tired and anxious after their flights, and in some cases are fearful of what will happen to them if they are sent back to their own country.”

Hostel for the homeless in Spelthorne A PLANNING APPLICATION has been made for a four-storey development, on the site where the White House Lodge stood, at the junction of Kingston Road and Laleham Road. Allegedly the aim would be to temporarily house single people in need of support, such as mental health, complex support needs, drug or alcohol issues, rough sleeping or offending background. Leaving aside, overshadowing/overbearing; adequacy of parking. Loading and turning; Layout and density of buildings and road access. It is unlikely for these reasons plus the fact its next to a rubbish recycling area, that property developers would have any interest in it. However initially it would appear that the council were about to make a positive step to fulfilling their obligation to reduce homelessness in the borough, but on further study of the information given out, this seems to be far from the case.

Council officers stated ‘that to provide fewer than 25 units plus 8 move-on flats would result in avoidable under development of the site.’ In other words its less important to consider the fact that a large number of vulnerable people with various social issues would be house together. The wording on the information sheet carefully suggests the hostel would be for homeless people with a connection to Spelthorne. As the ringed-fenced grant would come from Surrey County Council, it would be reasonable to suppose that we would be taking in homeless people from other part of Surrey and else where too. We could in fact be increasing our homeless number. Not reducing it. Many rough sleepers have tried homeless hostels and have found them dangerous and unpleasant. Some Big Issue vendors prefer to sleep in back packer hostels, where they can get a good night s sleep.

What people want is a secure permanent residence, not a hostel where you are tufted out during the day and have to aimlessly wait around, possibly in local parks or the nearest parade of shops until they re-open. If the development goes ahead the risk of a serious incident occurring in the hostel or in the neighbouring area would be greatly increased. The planning committee must take

this into consideration as hey would bear some of the responsibility. You cannot house so many people with complex needs all under one roof, not even if its being run by the Salvation Army. A better idea would be to build really affordable social homes on the site for some of some of Spelthorne’s working residents who can t afford to pay their rent and buy food too. A word of advice to

all of the newly elected opposition councillors and Tories too, it you back this scheme it could have ongoing repercussions. People with problems should be first treated and then rehoused in permanent accommodation. It ’s cheaper and better in the long run. A concerned Ashford Road resident (Name and address supplied).

Over 70% would get the jitters in a car that drives itself While the car industry invests billions into the development of self-driving cars, a survey by road safety charity IAM RoadSmart has found that drivers have other ideas – with over 70% saying they would not feel safe travelling in one. IAM RoadSmart, the UK’s biggest independent road safety charity, asked more than 1,600 visitors to its website if they would feel ‘confident and safe travelling in a fully self-driving vehicle, where there is no driver input.’ Just over 70% would feel ‘unsafe’ or ‘very unsafe’ with only 4% feeling ‘very safe.’ In addition, three-quarters (75%) expressed some level of disagreement with the statement that the vehicle should ‘always be in ultimate control,’ with 40% strongly against it. There was an overwhelming view that the driver should always be able to take over from a selfdriving car should he/she need to. Over 90% of respondents agreed this should be the case. Those surveyed were also very definite over a future where there is no human involvement in driving. When asked if they agree that ‘all human drivers should be banned from driving on the roads once fully autonomous vehicles are widely available,’ over 82% either ‘disagreed’ or ‘strongly disagreed.’ A future where the car takes over more of the

driver functions also didn’t fill those surveyed with joy. When asked if they were ‘concerned about the progress towards a future where the vehicle takes over more and more functions previously controlled by the driver,’ two-thirds said they were ‘concerned’ or ‘very concerned.’ Even current technology in new cars does not fill some of those surveyed with confidence. When asked if they would be ‘comfortable using current technology features on many cars such as adaptive cruise control, lane-assist and self-parking’ more than a quarter (27%) said they would be ‘uncomfortable’ or ‘very uncomfortable.’ However, over 50% were ‘comfortable’ or ‘very comfortable’ with using them. Neil Greig, IAM RoadSmart director of policy and research, said: “It’s clear from the results of our survey that the motor industry has a big job ahead in convincing drivers of the safety virtues of selfdriving vehicles. While on paper they offer significant advantages in eliminating human error from collisions, there is a lot of confusion, misinformation and an over-abundance of terminology which has made the public distrustful of it. “Some 44% of our respondents felt poorly or very poorly informed on autonomous vehicles with only 6% feeling very well informed. SPORT Brentford new signings Brentford have completed the signing of defender Pontus Jansson from Leeds for an undisclosed fee. The Sweden international made 120 appearances for the Elland Road club but has now completed a switch to Leeds’ fellow Sky Bet Championship side. Brentford said the central defender had completed a medical in London on Monday before signing a three-year contract, with the option of an extra year. “We are very pleased with Pontus’ arrival. The defence is an area that we have been looking to strengthen and we feel that Pontus will bring a lot to the group,” Brentford head coach Thomas Frank told the club’s website. “Pontus will add to the quality and competition for places that we need to adapt to different situations over the course of the season. “Pontus is a top defender who brings immense professionalism, a great attitude, experience, defensive robustness, leadership qualities, and threat from set-pieces to our side. • Brentford are set to complete the signing of the Blackburn goalkeeper David Raya in the region of £3m. Bentley, who along with Daniels had entered the final year of his Brentford contract, has since signed for Championship rivals Bristol City on a four-year deal. Catalonian-born Raya has made over 100 appearances for Blackburn since graduating from their academy. Brentford have already completed three deals so far this summer, signing centreback Ethan Pinnock from Barnsley, Danish midfielder Christian Norgaard from Fiorentina and centre-back Kane New signing centre-back O’Connor from Hibernian. A new look BAA FC With the 2018-19 season now firmly behind us work has begun for the 2019-20 season and there is a new look for BAA Heathrow (Sunday) Football Club. There has been a big reshuffle at the club as managers step down and new ones are appointed. The club is also moving two of its teams back to the Thames Valley Sunday Football League. The first team

has a new manager with Jordan Phillips taking his first role as manager. Jordan has been at the club a number of years and played under some of the clubs most successful managers. Despite his young age he has a vast amount of experience at the club and has won two league titles and part of two cup finals, one which was a county cup final. The Reserves also have a

new manager with Sunny Gill taking over the role, also in his first management role. Sunny is also a long time servant of the club, he has won a league title and was part of the 2015 County Cup Final team. For the last two seasons he has fulfilled an assistant managers role and helped the team finish as runners up in Division three of the Middlesex league. The

CHARITY BOWLS MATCH RAISES £495

On wed evening 26th June, Stanwell bowls club entertained The Five Bells, Stanwell, in their annual charity match. Once again, the wellattended event was a huge success even though the Saharan weather promised soon turned foul, and players realized summer wear and freezing conditions are incompatible. Unfortunately for the unconditioned Five Bells players the stalwart bowlers of Stanwell proved too much with an emphatic win even though two of the four matches came to a draw. There were a couple of superb first-time performances by rookie bowlers Lonnie Groves, and Five Bells man of the match Bradley Coy. The money raised is being donated to SHINE (Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus), as sponsorship for Michelle Culver in this years Great North Run. The event attracts 57,000 runners and is live on BBC 1, Sunday 8th Sept 2019 10.00am. Four other local Five Bells customers are also in the race, Nicki Maynard, Jo Bardini, Teresa Davis and Tracey Mills. Organisers of the bowls are grateful to everyone who donated prizes to the event especially local businesses Skippers, Phoenix House,Snowdrops and The Stanwell Hotel.

The first team will play in Division three and four of the TVSFL and will be in four cup competitions each, so plenty of football for anyone who is interested.
