ROOTED IN AND ROOTING FOR THIS COMMUNITY SINCE 1909.
In 1909, our founders didn’t simply open a bank; they planted themselves in this community. Today, those roots run mighty deep. We’re proud to say we’ve been serving our friends and neighbors in the Guthrie area for 111 years. Our founders probably never dreamed we’d be around so long, but we doubt they’d be surprised. We’re still operating the same way they did—starting with giving each person, each business, our undivided attention.

It is a town filled with fantastic Victorian Architecture and bubbling with the sights and sounds of Bluegrass Festivals, Territorial Christmases and Red Brick Nights, where we “close the city streets, pull up a chair and just listen to the music”! No wonder 11 films have been produced here JUST LAST YEAR! People SETTLE in Guthrie to enjoy all of these things plus a quality of life and life style that is progressive yet comfortable and easy! How about 10 parks, two lakes, two splash pads , handicapped accessible play grounds and a disc golf course. Visualize 405 acres of “greenbelt” and miles and miles of walking paths --- yup, right here in Guthrie America. The three-story downtown building at the corner of Harrison and Second Street will remain a museum first and foremost. Rehabbing the structure hinges on fundraising efforts and volunteer work. For more information on the State Capital Publishing Museum or to find out how you can get involved, visit publishingmuseum.org. 7) Excelsior Library The first African American library in Oklahoma and the midwest, the Excelsior Library, was founded by Judith Carter Horton in 1908. In 1967, desegregation combined libraries in the community and the building fell into disrepair. The Friends of the Excelsior Library are working to rehabilitate and reopen the building as a museum located at 323 S. 2nd St. Ph. 405-282-2083

PLAYGUTHRIE It’s hard not to notice the changes to Mineral Wells Park in Guthrie while driving past on Division Street. There are new play structures visible from the street that intrigue and excite younger passengers. The basketball court has been redone, new play structures are completed, a new splash-pad is visible, and parking, sidewalks, and pavilions are built.
Cordray said that a lot of time and effort went into the planning of the improvements, including the “old-timey” theme. “Someone found a postcard from the turn of the century, and it had a picture of the old pavilion from Mineral Wells when it was first built,” said Cordray. “The new pavilions and play structures are meant to imitate that style.”
The Mineral Wells Park Improvement Project began in November of 2019 when Guthrie won a grant from the Recreation Department of the Oklahoma Tourism Board’s Land & Water Conservation Fund. Work was halted in May, due to the spread of COVID-19; however, crews resumed, and progress moved forward.
The new splash-pad is located near the front of the park and visible from Division Street. “It’s such a great alternative to the pool. What I like about our public pool in Guthrie is that it is very affordable to go to,” said Cordray, “but we now also have a splash-pad at Banner Park that is free for families who may not have even the money for Highland Park or who may not be able to get there; now we have this one, and it’s free too.”
Van Cordray of the City of Guthrie Parks Board liked the idea from the start. “I thought it was a great idea,” said Cordray. “We could not turn this down. It’s such a great use of an historic space.” When the project was presented to the Parks Board, a few changes were made with safety in mind. “We moved the splash-pad to a safer area a little further away from the pond and street,” noted Cordray, “and we moved a few things around for safety. We were very excited that we qualified for the grant. This is incredible.” The City of Guthrie matched 50 percent of the total $437,500 with some of the Capital Improvements Project funds raised by a half-cent sales tax increase.
A state Arborist was consulted about diseased and mature trees that needed to be replaced or removed, and the new sidewalks, play structures, pavilions, and parking areas are ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant. “Parks are for everybody,” said Cordray. “That’s one of the great things I like about working with the Park Board. It’s not an exclusive thing, it’s for the whole town. Anyone can come and enjoy the park, and this looks fun!”

Guthrie’s 2019 school bond continues to pay off, benefiting the community and improving the education and atmosphere of its students. This summer, the project finished the secure vestibules for all sites (with the exception of Cotteral, which is on schedule to be demolished and replaced), improving entrances and creating a safer environment. The new Charter Oak school has helped keep up with population growth and provided a much needed new space in the southern edge of the school district.
The timeline for the bond’s improvements continues, with many projects being started and/or completed ahead of schedule. Spring of 2021 will see district-wide technology updates, and new chillers for the air-conditioning at Guthrie Upper Elementary School and the Junior High.
“We love how Charter Oak has turned out.” said Dr. Mike Simpson, Superintendent of Guthrie Public Schools. “It’s a showplace for our district. The YMCA is playing their youth games there in the new, full-sized basketball court, so the community really gets to see the site.”
2023 Improvements: New HVAC units for classrooms at the Junior High, restroom renovations at the high school, and continued district-wide technology updates in the spring and summer.
“We’ve made a lot of progress,” he added, “and a lot more is being done.”
2022 Improvements: Phase II of exterior renovations at the Junior High and more district-wide technology updates in the spring.
The replacement of Cotteral Elementary School and more technology updates are expected to happen in spring of 2025. GuthrieChamber.com GuthrieChamber.com 49 49 GuthrieChamber.com 49

WORKGUTHRIE OKLAHOMA STATE BANK BUSINESS OF THE YEAR The tagline of OSB (Oklahoma State Bank) is “The Best Bank For You,” and the sincerity of that motto shows in their service and authentic banking relationships with their customers. They strive to exceed customer expectations with some of the best bankers in the industry. OSB was chartered in Mulhall in 1901, and today has four branches: Norman, Edmond, Mulhall, and Guthrie. The Guthrie location has worked hard to show our community that it puts customer service and individual relationships as a top priority. That hard work paid off when they were named this year’s Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year. “We are thrilled. We had been on a mission to grow our business and help our community. All year there had been many things planned and done to shine. We’re glad those things helped us to show our Guthrie that we care,” said Dana Hornbeck, Senior Vice President.

HISTORYGUTHRIE
y r o t s i H The e i r h t u fo G
On April 22nd, 1889, a single shot was fired into the air at the starting line of a new great hope: the race for the Oklahoma Territory. Pioneers and settlers by the thousands rushed forward on horseback, in wagons, and on foot to stake their claims of land offered, first-come, first-served to opportunists and homesteaders. The first capital of Oklahoma was originally the site of the Deer Creek railroad station on the Southern Kansas Railway line. In just one day, a town of 10,000 people was born. That town was destined to be known as Guthrie, Oklahoma, named after the jurist John Guthrie. In 1910, the capital was moved to Oklahoma City with all its growth and potential, possibly enabling Guthrie to keep it’s Victorian charm intact for over 100 years. The largest contiguous historic district in the United States is, today, full of beautiful architecture from that time, brick paved streets, and the pioneer spirit. During the early 19th century, Guthrie was a stop on the Underground Railroad - a network of safe houses and secret back roads used to help African-American slaves escape to freedom. The home of Noble Park, the neighborhood of thriving homes and businesses which was built by African-American settlers since the time of the Land Run, Guthrie was a base for abolitionists and others who were sympathetic to the cause. The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and the Woman Suffrage Association of Oklahoma were headquartered in Guthrie, and great Guthrie women such as Margaret Rees fought for women’s votes, making Oklahoma one of the first states to allow women that privilege.

The “Sooner Spirit” is a term given in remembrance of the pioneers who snuck across the state line sooner than the official gun shot on that fateful Spring day, back in 1889. Guthrie, Oklahoma, with all its determination, resilience, and beauty, has kept that spirit alive for nearly a century and a half and continues to remember that time and that hope with festivals, museums, parades, and culture. Guthrie shares its memories and invites you to make new ones.

“I got in a bicycle accident and cut my face open really bad on a fire hydrant. I was bleeding so much and it just wouldn’t stop. I‘m thankful for blood donors for giving me back all of the blood I lost. What you do truly makes a huge difference. God bless you!”
