HI G HLA ND P AR K H IGH S C H OOL Here at Highland Park have been spent four yearsl short, to bc sure, yct their influencewili be felt throughout our entire life. Ifere we have gained knowledge, and formecl frienclships, some of which may last forever. Here has been the small perhaps to sceneof our happinessand of our successesl the eye of the outsideworlcl, yet inspiring us to face the future, each with his individual ambition. Here we have come in contact with men and women of noblest character, who have helped us mold our lives with encouragemerltancl leadership. llere contestshave been won-and lost, too-yet undauntecl, our spirit has always risen to the occasion, whethcr it was victory or defeat. We have been glacl to give our all for Highland Park, as it has been glad to do for us. Here has been laid the foundation, the stepping stone,of the future. N{ay Highland Park, with its fine faculty and ofiicials, live forever to serveto this end! Here will always remain our hearts, for we, like Ulysses, are a part of all we have met!

\s thc first whistle blew for the opening of the football sea-,,n, the Highlancler grid team cleparted for two weeks of -trcrluouswork at Camp Kiwanis. '[']re prospectsat the opening of the seasonwere not very pr,'nrising, as there were many positionsto bc filled and the c,,:rchcshaclmuch hard work to do in developingcapablemell :,'r thcsejobs. From a very small nucleusof returning letter:rrcn it was necessaryto make a squaclcapableof reprcsenting I I i shla n d P ark. 'l'hc line was macleup of exceptionallygreen material, and rirc hackfield showed a definite lack of prospects, making it "t,,rrgh sledding" for the coaches. There were many men who i:.r,i never before been out for football, which fact, coupled s ith a new district and strangeteams, made the seasonone of iirc nrost dilficult in the history of our school. Rcgardlessof these handicaps, however, NIr. Trigg, head
coach, anclMr, Hume, assistanthead coach, hacla well-trained tearnbn the field for the opening game. The Highlanders had a very pleasanttimc at Camp Kiwanis. The boyswere fed the bestof food by thc mother of the football squad, NIrs. Garver. T'he players showed marked improvement from the very first game, duc to the fact that a lack of expericnce was thc only obstacle to hinder them from rnarching to the top. 'fhe squad made a very poor start, but coached by the untiring elTortsof our two finc coaches, thc boys soon rcached their stride and stayed thcre. 'fhe team was a perfect example of frne coaching anci showedthc true value o f t h e No t re l)a me s h if t . This shift, due to th e p e rf e c t io n t h a t h a s b e e n re a c h e d in playing it in Highland Park, has attracterl rnuch attcntion. -\lthough many other teams employ a shift, our team is the only one in this sectionthat uscsthe true Notre Damc shift as taught by the late Knute Rockne.

Highland Parkts grid team met an invading Royce City team with a badly crippled squad as a result of the battering received the week before at Sherman. -fhe main change in this ganle was the switching of Johnny Blaine, regular guard, to the fullback position, replacing Morrison who was absentwith a severehead injury. The Highlanders, however, broke through with a crushing defeat over the light Royce City eleven, registering their initial win but still failed to look impressive. A 7 5-yardgallop by Loring was the longest touchdown of the day, while Shapard,Iiulghum, Startzell, Hoffman and Blaine alscr made touchdowns.

Led by Bob Startzell, the Highlanders were an easy victor over Sulphur Springs. The Highlanders displayed surprising offensive strength and brilliant defensive tacticsthat held a well-balancedSulphur Springs eleven at bay. This made the Highlander's third victory of the season. The team played the best game of the seasonin defeating the \\Iildcats, compiling a total of twelve first downs as compared with four for the Wildcats. Shapard and \\tiley were the stars for the Hiehlander eleven. \J

Surging acrossthe goal twice in the early minutes of the game to register a commanding lead that withstood the threats of a persistent invader, the Hi Park eleven defeated the Gainesville Leopards zo to r3. The game was well played throughoutand there were frequent substitutes, due to the savageway the two teams followed the ball.

This game showed that the Highlanders had made fine progresssince their early seasonreverses. The Highlanders made two touchdowns in the first quarter, Floffman and Startzell putting over the counters. In the secondpart, the invaders, with their backsto the wall, galloped to make two touchdownsin the final quarter-score I4 to I3, Hi Park. The Highlanders scoredagain in the final quarter when the invaders launched a passingattack, only to have Stebbinsintercept the heave and carry the ball to the eleven-yard line. Morrison then carried the ball on for the touchdown. Hoffman, Startzell, Stebbinsand Morrison rvere the principal stars of the game for the Highlanders.

fought, and revealedsome teamrryorkwhich made it very evident that they were playing the best ball of the season. The game ended with the score of. z4-zo in favor of Hi Park. Delafield was high-point man with r r points. Our boys had a very hard assignmentin this tournament becausethey had to play three games to get to the finals, whereasthe other teams played only two. The next game was with Arlington, a team which was cracked up to be pretty good, and they were pretty cocky over playing the Highlanders. Again showing beautiful basketball,Hi Park downed the enemy by the tune of. z8-zo. Delafield still held the high-point honors with 7 points. Now, the exciting part of the tournament had just begun. Hi Park was to play the Great Denton Broncs, the next morning in the senior-finals. Everyone but the Highlandersseemedto think it would be just "abreeze" for Denton. The game openedup with the tall, lanky boysof Denton having a two or thrâ‚Źe point margin over the Highlanders. Our boys played with wonderful teamwork and outstanding defensive play throughout the entire game, which was considered the most exciting and probably the hardest fought game of the tournament. At the end of the game four regulars were out on account of fouls. In the last two minutes Haughton was sent in and rung up four points for the "Blue and Gold," but the final score was 28-27 in Denton's favor. With the outstandingofiensive work of Delafield, the defensiveplay of Lee, combined with great teamwork of King, Richardson, Loring and Gray, the tournament was a great ending to a slow season. At the BasketballBanquet, Delafield and Lee were awarded trophiesfor being the most yaluable players to the team.
