AS THIS ISSUE HITS NEWSSTANDS , I will be coming up on the three-year mark of my journey with Minnesota Bride, and in taking some time to reflect, I have come to realize that one of the most rewarding aspects of this career is the acquaintances I make and have made along the way.

I started working for this amazing brand as the world, and especially events, were being put on hold. And in such a difficult time, it was also a time of growth—a time of stepping out of our creative comfort zones, learning how to come together in a time of separation, and finding a renewed perspective and appreciation of what matters most: the people in our lives.

While most daily routines have returned to normal, a new outlook on what we do day to day had a lasting effect, specifically as we cautiously forayed back into safely coordinating styled and fashion shoots. This issue is the first in a few years that we have been able to feature two full-scale fashion shoots (“Off to the Races” page 74, and “View from the Top” page 86), and despite the stunning final images, behind the scenes isn’t always glamorous. Whether shooting in the sweltering summer sun or the biting winter wind, going from dawn to dusk—the teams we work with deserve the utmost respect.

And it is also those days that are the most invigorating and motivating, thanks to those teams— the creatives who join forces with dogged determination to accomplish something spectacular. It’s the photographers, the stylists, the models and the vendors. It’s reconnecting with familiar faces and making new friends. It’s seeing a working mother wearing her sweet baby on set, or spying another working mother’s new baby bump. Hearing about their passions, their families, and their goals—it is these talented individuals and joyous moments in between shots that bring life to each issue, and at the end of those long days, it’s the heartfelt hugs all around that continue to inspire me every day.

Cheers to all of these unique and beautiful souls that I have been so blessed to work with, and thank you for all that you do to make weddings and photo shoots so magical!

The Heart of Downtown Fargo

“Hospitality is the heart and soul of the Jasper Hotel experience,” says general manager Kylee Brisch, and with all the thoughtful touches, it’s easy to see that this is the case. The hotel was designed to honor the rich history of its hometown, Fargo, while simultaneously celebrating today’s local artists and makers. When you first enter the Nordic-inspired lobby lounge, the Plains-inspired color palette and regionally curated artwork fill the space with palpable warmth.

The fifth floor event space constituting the airy, modern Continental Ballroom and sweeping terrace with a panoramic view of Broadway Street is over 6,000 square feet and can accommodate up to 250 guests. The golden chandeliers and neutral color story are ideal for accommodating various styles of wedding décor.

DESSERTS HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO

Voted “Best Southern Minnesota Venue” for the past three years, the St. James hotel in Red Wing is a wonderful option for hosting your ceremony that just got a little sweeter. Baker’s Table, featuring desserts from top-notch pastry chef Amy Zerwas, is a new service added to the St. James wedding experience.

It begins with a cake consultation where Zerwas works with the couple to learn about their vision. She then creates a 3D image of what the cake or dessert display will look like for the nearly weds to review. “Everything is completely customizable,” says social media and marketing coordinator Chelsea Lockrem. “Whatever your dream is, we can make it a reality!”

Many flavors are available, ranging from classics like lemon, almond, and chocolate, to their biggest hit, lavender blueberry sage.

If you want an additional option to accompany your cake or are looking for something different altogether, Baker’s Table also offers a wide array of dessert selections from tortes, cheesecakes, pannacotta, cookies, bars and much more.

NEW VENUE

Industrial Inspiration

Working with architects at Christian Dean Architecture, The Lowlands’ team “wanted to create a space that feels refined and welcoming,” says venue director Marlo Munch. “It’s neutral without feeling sterile and has a lot of personality to discover as you move through the space.”

Set to open in early 2023, The Lowlands is a reimagined industrial building in the River Flats neighborhood of St. Paul designed to honor the space’s history. Its previous life as a sheet metal manufacturing facility provides interesting features that give it a unique atmosphere.

There are options for an indoor or outdoor ceremony with access to both upper and lower levels and a semi-private terrace. Two comfortable green rooms are included for getting ready as

well as rentals such as custom tables and gorgeous wooden chairs. What makes this venue stand out from the crowd is the team’s many years of experience running Lowlands’ cousin venue, PAIKKA. Like PAIKKA, Munch states that they want to get clients excited about making their events more sustainable. They are planning to have organics recycling available onsite and will suggest utilizing their preferred caterers who are sustainabilityfocused, as is their bar program.

Mosaic in downtown Minneapolis is the perfect venue for couples looking to combine their unique cultures and personalities into one harmonious ceremony. Located within the FINNEGANS House building, The Mosaic team partnered with Lampert Architects to create a space that is both open and industrial—a blank canvas that allows you to design your dream event while accommodating up to 450 guests seated.

The team wanted to create a venue that centered on removing barriers around the vendors that clients can choose, especially for food and catering. “We want to honor the individual for who they are and allow them to represent themselves and their unions in the most authentic ways,” says co-founder Chanti Miller. “Being a minority- and veteran-owned business has allowed us to approach our business model through different lenses and provided us with the opportunity to create a space that instills a sense of belonging.”

Whether you consider yourself a craft beer connoisseur or an at-home mocktail mixologist, these local drink-slingers are serving up something for everyone with new offerings.

CORDIAL

A staple in the Twin Cities catering scene, Chowgirls has had its liquor catering license for several years, but recently made the leap to highlight this service with Cordial, a sub-brand that specifically focuses on elevated cocktail offerings with expanded bar staff. Leading the Cordial team are Eleni Beloy and Meghan Larson, who both have amassed extensive knowledge of beverages and hospitality from years of experience at various well-known local establishments.

Beloy and Larsen are experts on cocktails and beers, respectively, and work with couples to curate custom drink menus. Be it based on a couple’s color palette or an ingredient that is meaningful to them, Cordial is happy to accommodate. They also offer a cocktailtasting add-on, which is a great way for them to understand a couple’s vision and taste. This entails asking seemingly simple but telling questions, like a couple’s favorite place to grab a drink, their favorite cocktails, and what their wedding guests are like, allowing them to tailor the bar menu to suit.

“We can provide any and all bar service, no matter the event! We especially

love to do multiple events for the same wedding. It garners familiarity and gives the celebrations a family feel,” says Amy Brown, Chowgirls’ co-founder. Their services are priced per person, per hour, and they offer a variety of different packages, with optional additions such as a champagne toast, wine pour, custom signature cocktails and spirit-free cocktails. They can serve anywhere within Minnesota, and while they mostly work within an hour’s radius of the Twin Cities, they can travel elsewhere in the state for a fee. What makes Cordial stand out are the intentional details and processes that are also the backbone of Chowgirls Catering services, such as seasonality, locality and

sustainability. They source local, in-season produce whenever possible, and also have their own garnish garden for edible flowers and fresh herbs to top it all off, literally. They also prioritize working with local and BIPOC-owned beer and liquor companies, as well as women-owned and organic wineries. Their house-made tonic, syrups and other mixers are at the core of many of their concoctions.

Below the soaring 32-foot ceilings that feature the building’s original timber, they added the Mezzanine, a second level that not only boasts a view of the entire production floor but also serves as an intimate private gathering space that can comfortably fit 60 people. Along with their spirits services, their full kitchen can also provide food to suit your event needs, and for an extra charge, you can consult with a chef to curate your own personalized menu.

And, staying true to their mixer origins, the Earl Giles team is at your service for an array of customizable cocktail options, offerings and advice. With years of experience in sustainably concocting elixirs with extracts from all over the world and consulting other beverage businesses, their team is a sure shot when it comes to navigating your way to refreshments that are uniquely you. If you’re looking to add an experience to your bachelor or bachelorette weekend, try the immersive cocktail experience. Earl Giles can host up to 40 people for this event, where you and your crew can learn, imbibe, and take home your custom creations creations that you could also incorporate into your big day. Or, schedule a tasting just for you and your partner to create custom cocktails that represent your style, taste and personality.

THE FAB TAP

The mobile bar service that began with The Queen, a refurbished Airstream, has grown in many ways from developing add-ons like flower crown-making to partnering with the Vine Room to host cash bars and is now taking its offerings up another notch, in two unique ways. The first is a new, patent-pending addition to their mobile services. After receiving requests for serving in smaller spaces, owner Lindsey Pattee noticed a gap in the marketplace and along came her idea for Petite Pete an adorable mobile beverage cart that is much more compact than its Airstream predecessor. Petite Pete can serve any and all drinks, from beer to mixed drinks, and has three taps that are pressurized with CO2 to keep things fresh and delicious. They offer “Fab Favorites,” which are tried and true cocktails, but Fab Tap wants every couple’s menu to feel personalized and happily accommodates customizations. Pattee also suggests offering a mocktail version of your signature cocktail to keep it simple while still being considerate of your NA guests.

“Although Pete is relatively small, he is a bit mighty,” and requires at least a 37-inch-wide space, says Pattee. Depending on budget, Fab Tap can travel all over the state. And, if you’re looking to keep things a little more sustainable, they suggest using kegs of beer and bubbly as a more efficient way to serve large parties. For example, did you know a keg of bubbly can serve roughly 110 glasses? That’s about the same as 27 bottles of wine, sans all the extra packaging!

Fab Tap’s other new endeavor, Fab Drink Toppers, is a personalized service and an Instagram-able touch to add to your beverages. Made out of premium frosting sheets, Fab Drink Toppers are edible decorations that float on your beverage of choice. The Fab Tap team sources the sheets, and designs and produces the final products in-house. The team spent countless hours researching and testing various types of frosting sheets, and landed on the highest quality sheets to provide the most appealing experience. They offer both custom and pre-designed graphics, and even the pre-designed toppers still allow for some customizations, such as the couple’s initials. While they like to have the design files finalized two weeks prior to the event, they are open to working with couples with shorter timelines or custom shipping needs. *

You want your special day to be memorable—in a good way!—and great food is a big part of making great memories. The good news? There are no rules, so the options are unlimited—it’s all up to you!

WHERE TO BEGIN?

The first question: How important is food to you on your big day? Are you and your beloved the foodies in your circle who visit the newest restaurants and try the latest in food trends? Maybe you’re into comfort foods and want to serve up some childhood favorites. Or perhaps you’re all about appetizers and desserts and want a

wide variety of each. You might even decide you’d like to have brunch.

“Planning the menu for your wedding can be so much fun but also overwhelming for a wedding couple,” says Food Gallery Catering’s director of sales and marketing Karin Jasnoch. “It’s our goal to make this an easy and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Unique, gorgeous food is what

Once the two of you have an idea of what you want, it’s time to start the quest for a caterer. Some venues have a specific caterer they work with; if so, the choice has been made for you. Otherwise, a good first step is to consult a wedding planner who can help you from start to finish.

“We strive to develop a personalized experience for each couple we work with,” says Cheryl Wortman, Lake Elmo Inn event coordinator. “We work one-on-one with clients throughout the planning process, and work to make sure every last detail is taken care of, either by our staff or other vendors we work closely with.”

A good planner can also help you determine your catering budget. It may be a matter of priorities: Do you plan to invite everyone from Great Aunt Sally to your second cousin’s daughter’s boyfriend? If so, you might opt for economy over quantity. Or is a sumptuous repast something you really want to share with your guests? Then to make that dream come true you might be looking at a smaller guest list and a bigger food budget.

Other budget considerations when choosing a caterer might include “quality of ingredients, presentation, innovation and service,” says Christie Altendorf, D’Amico Catering’s director of marketing and senior event planner. “Couples who want to get creative with their menu and feature fun, original fare should ask about what customization options are available. Those who prioritize high levels of service should get more information on the ratio of service staff to guest.”

It’s about the food, but not only about the food. “One person’s top priority may be plate presentation, while another’s passion may be the amount of options provided at their event, and another’s may be the style of service or budget. This is why our sales team really likes to engage and get to know a couple so that we are able to personalize the overall experience with Food Gallery,” Jasnoch says.

Quality of service also matters, says Josephine Stafford, owner of Sixpence Events and Planning. “Couples should be most concerned about service when it comes to booking a caterer,” she says. “Nothing kills a vibe more than messy tables … Hiring a catering company that adequately staffs for your event is a must! Don’t scrunch your nose

at the number of servers, or try to haggle the number of chefs assigned to your guest count. Those numbers matter just as much as the ability to accommodate nondairy or gluten-sensitive guests.”

Concern for the environment is increasingly a quality couples look at when making their choice of caterer, too.

“Couples wanting a sustainable wedding menu should look at four aspects: local, seasonal, environmental impact and plant-based,” says Katherine Pardue, owner of Hark! Café, a plantbased and gluten-free eatery in Minneapolis.

“Focus on more than what the food consists of and ask, where does the food come from? Who produces it? What are they paid and what are their working conditions? A sustainable menu might cost more up front but will help offset the long-term environmental costs as well as support a sustainable and just agricultural industry.”

D’Amico has made sustainability a key element of their day-to-day operations, Altendorf says. Among their efforts, she cites “composting, using food scraps to support local agriculture, and

consistently connecting with Minnesota farmers to use their products within our menus.”

Some caterers extend their concern beyond food. “We offer compostable tableware, and are finding more and more couples looking for these options,” Wortman says about Lake Elmo Inn. “In addition, we recycle 87 percent of our trash, including food waste.” Similarly, “All of our disposable items are compostable,” says Food Gallery Catering’s Jasnoch.

Next, decide how you’d like to serve your guests. Maybe you and your crowd have a go-withthe-flow style, so trays of passed hors’ d’oeuvres, a buffet table or food stations are the answer. Last

summer, as COVID concerns eased and couples cautiously started returning to larger gatherings and plated sit-down dinners, Wortman saw an uptick in food stations, which she foresees as the trend in 2023. Stafford also likes food stations for the option to have multiple entrees and sides. Jasnoch agrees, and notes that it is more informal and allows guests to easily mingle.

Upscale ambience is another trend. “We’re seeing a heavy focus right now in designing menus and bar offerings that are simultaneously a true reflection of the couple and beautifully styled to enhance the overall aesthetic of the wedding,” Altendorf says.

THE SEARCH CONTINUES

If you don’t go with a planner’s recommendation, do your research and narrow down your candidates. Ask friends for their ideas, especially those who’ve recently attended or had weddings themselves. Scour the web to find caterers who check the right boxes. Obviously, if you want French cuisine you can cross off those who specialize in barbecue and burgers, but also consider whether their food presentation on social media looks delicious and inspired, and, of course, check out reviews of their services.

Once you’ve winnowed down the list—five to seven is a manageable number—it’s time to start

making calls. This is likely to take longer than you expect; caterers have been inundated now that weddings and events are flourishing once again, so start early. Determine immediately whether they can accommodate your wedding date and venue, and how far in advance you have to book. Also keep in mind that your caterer will be an integral part of your wedding day, so the relationship you build together is crucial. That means good planning and, in particular, effective communication.

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

Once you’ve got a shortlist of caterers—three is a good number—it’s time to meet and talk details. When you start talking dollars and cents, you’ll want to get some idea of cost per person.

Among questions to ask:

• Do they serve a specific geographic area?

• Do they have a minimum or maximum guest requirement?

• Do they offer a menu tasting?

• Do they provide beverage and bar service?

• Can your venue accommodate the caterer’s needs for food prep and staffing?

• Do they provide their own kitchen equipment, servingware and servers?

• Do they furnish table linens and place settings, tables and chairs, or do they have rental companies they can recommend?

• Do they use locally sourced meat, dairy or produce?

• Do they use environmentally sound practices such as recycling, composting, eco-friendly tableware?

• Can they accommodate special dietary needs, create custom menus or follow a special family recipe?

• Will they assist the venue in room turnover or in set-up and take-down?

• Do they have an on-site coordinator or day-of captain who can assist with any unexpected issues?

Choosing the right caterer might seem like a lot of work, but it’s time well spent. Knowing that your guests enjoyed the fare you curated will add to the good memories of the day. And amid all the meeting and mingling, don’t forget to take a moment and enjoy it for yourself, too. *

I’m always drawn to fun colors and unexpected color palettes. This was actually inspired by my 3-year-old. He’s obsessed with the color purple, and my favorite color is orange, so I kept seeing the two together around my house. When Jessie Diggins, an Olympic gold medalist in cross-country skiing, attended a fellow Olympian’s wedding in Canada, it wasn’t long before Wade Poplawski noticed the woman in the daring red dress at the giant Jenga game, where losers had to kiss if they knocked over the blocks. After Jessie and Wade “lost” a game, they made a bet: The loser had to rent a car and drive to visit the winner. A few months later, Wade made the drive from his home in Boston to Jessie’s front door in Vermont. Their five years of dating were full of memory-making and traveling around Europe

before Wade proposed in Monadnock State Park in New Hampshire amid beautiful mountain views. Flowers abounded at the enchanting event, and guests were treated to “appetizers from the world” to showcase the couple’s memories of their travels together. The first look was a favorite moment for both bride and groom: “I’ve been madly in love with him for seven years, and seeing the love and commitment in his eyes is something I’ll never forget,” Jessie says. Christmas 2020 was the best one yet for Matthew Ellison and Alexandra Philipsek, since that’s the day he proposed. The couple, who had dated for five years, tied the knot at McNamara Alumni Center, transformed into a winter wonderland with a grand floral installation at the ceremony and a sea of twinkling lights and bright candles to illuminate the space. Centerpieces with lush florals and pops of gold perfectly represented the couple’s winter garden theme. Music lovers Alex and Matt carefully chose songs for the day, adding special tributes

throughout. Their first dance as newlyweds was to “January Wedding” by the Avett Brothers, a group they saw together. The couple also included a nod to their pup, Willie: Cocktail napkins showed a drawing of him, with the message, “Cheers from Willie!” Playing off the venue’s angular architecture, Ink Sweets created a delectable display of desserts decorated with intricate lines to match the gold and blue palette. Nature provided perhaps the loveliest décor with an evening snowfall. “I don’t think either of us stopped smiling all day,” Alex said.

With their beloved dog, Birdie, in attendance, Lee Nagorski proposed to Aliki Vrohidis on a bitterly cold day on Artist’s Point in Grand Marais, eight years after meeting at the University of Minnesota. “Of course, I was crying when he asked, and it was so cold out our tears turned to little icicles on our eyelashes,” Aliki recalls. On their summer wedding day, potted plants—many of which were given as favors— took the place of cut flowers. Aliki held a bouquet of astilbe to match the fern centerpieces as she and Lee exchanged

vows during their first look to make the moment even more special. (They said them again at the ceremony.) The bride walked down the aisle to “Songbird” by Fleetwood Mac, a tribute to the couple’s first concert together. Dove motifs appeared throughout the day, a sign of good luck in both Greek and Polish cultures; a paper dove installation at the reception guided guests to their seats, and more than 1,000 paper birds were suspended from the ceiling. Espresso minimartinis served as the perfect nightcap to their dreamy day.

Amanda Dahl and Connor Harreld went to the same high school and college, but they didn’t click until after they’d graduated, when the two were at a bar with mutual friends and he finally mustered up the courage to ask her to dance. Four years later, the day of his proposal started off as a re-creation of the couple’s first date, with brunch at East Side Bar in St. Paul. A hike at Willow River State Park followed, where Connor proposed, but the real surprise was an engagement party Connor had planned. Blessed with lovely spring weather, their wedding at The Sinclair on Grand in Northeast Minneapolis was full of personal touches: the wedding rings were from their late

grandparents, Amanda’s “something old” butterfly hairpin belonged to Connor’s late grandmother, she wore “something borrowed” earrings loaned by her mother, and a pin that she and her high school best friends have shared at each of their weddings for “something blue.” The couple went for a timeless look, with a classic black and white palette, soft greenery and gold accents. To showcase their love for Minneapolis, they used as many local companies as possible, and tables were named after local breweries while a food truck served dinner. Amanda’s reception dress was a hit, as was the reception itself, as everyone gathered on the dance floor to celebrate the couple.

When Don Stalter left for a work trip to Berlin in 2015, he didn’t know he would meet the love of his life, Carolin Kubanke. After their first date at a tapas restaurant, followed by a night of dancing, it was clear their connection was something special. Four years later, Don pulled off a surprise sunrise proposal during a California weekend getaway. With friends and family from around the world, the couple’s elegant midsummer reception at the Glensheen Mansion overlooking Lake Superior harkened back to memories of

Stalter family summers on the lake (his grandmother’s home is just down the street). Carolin’s grandparents made their first trip to the U.S. to attend, and a wildflower theme paid tribute to the bride’s grandfather, a beekeeper who preaches the importance of biodiversity. The blossoms appeared everywhere, from the welcome signs and sweetheart table to the floral installation above the dance floor. Guests wore name tags with a funny tagline to jumpstart conversations, so no one was a stranger when it was time to dance.

Cody Preisler and Juhaan Johar knew there was something special when they connected on Bumble in 2017. After a seven-hour first date of talking and brewery-hopping in Minneapolis’ North Loop, it was obvious this was to be the first of many outings. After two magical years together, Cody proposed on the beaches of Juhaan’s hometown in Sri Lanka during the golden hour. “We were lucky to have our family and friends there to capture the moment and celebrate with us,” Cody said. Their early spring wedding—delayed several times because of COVID—started with brunch and a party

bus stopping at picture-perfect spots around Minneapolis for photo ops. Lush greenery and hints of dusty blue transformed the venue, while eucalyptus, white roses and ferns with accents of baby’s breath created an elegant display in the bouquets, boutonnieres and ceremony arch. Cody and Juhaan’s brothers gave heartfelt speeches and helped introduce both sides of the family to each other. The night ended with a packed dance floor (including Cody’s grandma tearing it up!) with the DJ playing hits from the ’80s and ’90s and popular Bollywood songs.

Fate was on Andrew Wolak’s side when he sat behind Jordan Weiss on the first day of physical therapy school in 2018. They wound up being partners for a semesterlong project and soon became partners in romance. Four years later, family and friends from across the country converged on an ideal day for a wedding, with the natural beauty of rolling cornfields and a serene lake as the setting. Jordan held a bouquet of O’Hara, Quicksand and Amnesia roses as an accent to their palette of neutral tones, with

matching florals on the ceremony arbor. As cocktail hour began, newlywed bliss came over Andrew, who walked around asking everyone, “Have you met my wife?” At the reception, table numbers were accompanied by photos of the couple at the age of the table number. Wedding photos from their parents’ and grandparents’ weddings hung on a window as a tribute to their marriages, and the newlyweds’ cake used Jordan’s grandmother’s famous carrot cake recipe for a sweet ending to their family affair.

A party fortuitously brought Sara Trautz and Lucas Yamamura together at Dartmouth College in 2011. Although sparks didn’t fly immediately, the two often saw each other on campus, and “we would laugh about it every time we ran into each other and finally decided to go on an official date,” Sara says. Nearly nine years later, Lucas proposed to Sara with a booklet of cartoons depicting their relationship. Their bright summer wedding day brought loved ones from near and far, including Lucas’ family from his home country, Brazil; their ceremony included a major surprise when the officiant announced that the couple had legally married two years previously

during the COVID pandemic. Elements of Brazilian culture were evident throughout, from Sara’s welcome speech in Portuguese to cookies with the Brazilian flag. Pink and white blooms with wild strawberries filled the bouquets, centerpieces and boutonnières, a lovely contrast with the pastel-blue palette. To show love for their pup, Rocky, cocktail napkins featured her likeness. Songs from their college years and music from Brazil helped Sara and Lucas fulfill the “college dance party” vibe they were going for. The couple put together a rumba routine for their first dance, to “Dancing in the Moonlight,” then guests kept the dance floor full until midnight.

Mitch Seiffert met Melissa Hoiberg when he swiped right on a dating app; a year and a half later, he went to an unplugged leadership retreat and after a getaway full of clarity, he realized on the flight home that he wanted to propose to her. He didn’t waste any time, calling her parents for their permission as soon as he landed, and proposing to Melissa later that day when she got home from brunch with her mother. The couple turned tradition upside down with a morning ceremony at Loring Social followed by a brunch—followed by a trip to Ireland with 40 of their guests. Inspired by a floral arrangement photo, the bride knew she wanted romantic hues

of pink and mauve for their big day, which extended to their stunning wedding cake. “Since there was no dance or formal dinner, we wanted the food and atmosphere to be an experience,” Melissa says. Live music played while guests noshed on delectables such as chicken and waffles and delicacies from a roaming seafood cart. After arriving in Ireland, the newlyweds and their guests continued the party with a fairy-tale formal dinner and dance at Kinnitty Castle, with an abundance of flowers and candlelight. After the reception, the couple and their guests spent a week of adventuring around the stunning Irish coast.

A friendship that started in accounting classes at Miami University of Ohio and continued during a study trip in Europe is where it all began for Stephanie Urness and Kevin Murphy. Fate intervened when the two ended up in the same apartment building in Chicago postgraduation, and nearly three years later, Kevin proposed on a trip to Amelia Island, Florida. The couple and their families—who watched the proposal from afar—popped the Champagne and the celebration began. On the couple’s big day, the backyard of the Urness residence was transformed into an idyllic wedding venue. Their dog, Ziggy Marley, acted as flower girl and wore an elegant collar of greenery,

maintaining the formal dress code. As a nod to Kevin’s Nashville roots, Stephanie’s family participated in a traditional “bury the bourbon” ritual, where the spirit is buried at the reception site a month before the wedding; during the rehearsal he dug it up and everyone took a shot to kick off the weekend. White and green botanicals abounded, and glass chandeliers shed a warm glow inside an enormous tent. Drinks flowed from the circular bar that Stephanie had visualized and was built as a gathering spot, while she and her bridesmaids changed into short sequined dresses to kick off the dancing. The band ended the evening with “Purple Rain” by Prince, a tribute to Minnesota.

Dulari Roopnarine and Patrick Lo wed in a vibrant celebration that combined their cultures and personal styles. They started as co-workers, but after a few years, romance blossomed. Patrick pulled off a surprise proposal in Punta Cana after three years together. Fast-forward to their nuptials at Shri Gaatyatri Mandir, where the pair paid homage to the bride’s culture with a Hindu ceremony. Both bride and groom wore red, a color of good luck in both cultures. The bride participated in Hindu traditions, including application of the henna (mehndi) two days

before the festivities, and the haldi kumkum, a social gathering the night before the ceremony, where she received blessings from her family and priest. At the end of the Hindu ceremony, guests blessed the newlyweds by sprinkling flowers on them as they walked around the sacred fire. The next day, to honor the groom’s culture, they held two virtual Chinese tea ceremonies with relatives in Hong Kong who couldn’t attend in person. Their modern take on two traditional weddings was a magical representation of their fused cultures and love for each other.

“Sam, have you met Sam?” That was how Samantha Hansen and Samuel Meidl’s mutual friend introduced them in 2018. “It is a beautiful thing how life works,” Samantha reflects: Earlier that day Samantha had attended church, and the message was named, “New Beginnings.” After their first dinner date, the pair was caught in a wild snowstorm where Sam literally swept Samantha off her feet so she wouldn’t have to traipse through the snow in her heels. “The hopeless romantic in me was instantly smitten,” she says. On a trip to Denver three years later, Sam asked Samantha to spend forever with him; a snowstorm delayed their flight home leading to a five-

day engagement celebration full of excited calls to inform loved ones of the news. Their sunny May nuptials featured a black, white and beige palette with white floral installations. After exchanging vows, flower cannons went off as the new Mr. and Mrs. Meidl were introduced to the guests. At the reception, “In loving memory” cards and candles honored lost loved ones, and Samantha changed into her late grandmother’s wedding dress, with some modern alterations, to dance with her grandpa, much to his surprise and delight. Their day was unforgettable, from the emotional first look to the crowded dance floor.

Tommy Astrup and Abby Sekus had been dating for about a year when he proposed to her on the Stone Arch Bridge one snowy night a couple of days before Christmas in 2021. They tied the knot on a perfect May day followed by a reception at the Minikahda Club amid idyllic lake views, fulfilling a dream Abby had had since childhood. Guests were welcomed with blooming tulips and colorful flower boxes—including one with a live duck that greeted everyone as they walked in! Abby took inspiration from her gown to create a “garden party” theme. Featuring blush tones, white flower appliqués and pearl

and crystal elements, the dress details were incorporated into the décor of the day. “I wanted it to feel bright and cheerful,” she said. The couple opted for white blooms and greenery, with white baby’s breath adding an ethereal touch, while the bride and bridesmaids held elegant bouquets of white peonies. Clear vessels with orchids adorned tables at the reception for contemporary flair. Abby’s favorite moment of the day was seeing her groom for the first time when she came down the aisle. “It was a surreal feeling, and it felt so special having all our friends and family there during that moment.”

The Countdown Begins

FIRST THINGS FIRST:

Tell friends and family. Set the date.

Choose the type of wedding you want (formal, semi-formal, informal; which season).

Set a wedding budget and decide who will be able to contribute and how much. Visit, choose and book your ceremony and reception sites.

Pick a photographer/videographer. Have engagement photos taken.

Start shopping for your gown.

Start working on your guest list. Arrange for both sets of parents to get together.

9 TO 12 MONTHS BEFORE:

Sign up for any pre-marital counseling or classes.

Announce your engagement in local newspapers, if desired.

Choose your wedding party members. Arrange the first meeting with your minister, priest, rabbi or officiant and

wedding planner (if using one). Throw an engagement party. Gather wedding inspiration. Start a Pinterest board. Search magazines and websites for ideas.

Begin adding the names of vendors and their contact information into a master contact list.

6 TO 9 MONTHS BEFORE:

Select a caterer.

Choose a baker, schedule cake tastings. Order your gown and schedule fittings (remember to bring your shoes). Shop for bridesmaid dresses. Hire a florist.

Book a band/DJ.

Start researching honeymoon spots. Finalize the guest list. Book a stationer (and calligrapher, if using one).

Mail save-the-date cards.

Purchase your shoes, headpiece, jewelry and lingerie for the big day.

Book hair and makeup artists for the big day.

Reserve event necessities. Book portable toilets for outdoor events, extra chairs, linens, lighting and so on. Start making a day-of timeline, determining what should happen when (speeches, first dance, etc).

Book a block of hotel rooms near the reception site for out-of-town guests. Register for gifts at two to three places. Start to keep track of favorite songs.

4 TO 6 MONTHS BEFORE:

Order all wedding stationery (invitations, envelopes, thank-you notes) and work out pricing for programs, menus and place cards, which will be printed closer to the date. Hire wedding-day transportation. Book flights and hotel reservations for your honeymoon.

Arrange the rehearsal dinner.

Schedule any beauty treatments (browwaxing, facials, teeth-whitening) that you’d like to have done before the wedding. Send a guest list to the host of your bridal shower.

It’s never too early to start planning. Follow these steps and you’ll be well on your way to matrimonial bliss.

Order passport, if necessary.

Purchase wedding rings; order engraving. Remind mother and mother-in-law to start shopping for their dresses.

2 TO 4 MONTHS BEFORE:

Order the suits for the groom and groomsmen. Meet with the caterer or facility manager to discuss menus, wine selections, serving style, etc.

Choose and order wedding favors and welcome baskets, if desired.

Order the wedding cake.

Meet with your officiant to discuss your ceremony; invite loved ones to perform readings, if appropriate.

Choose songs for the ceremony and reception. Buy thank-you gifts for your attendants. Confirm group hotel rates for out-of-town guests.

Book your pre-wedding and wedding-night hotel.

Finalize your honeymoon plans. Send invitations to the calligrapher if you’re using one.

Plan your bachelorette party with your attendants.

Send a day-of timeline to your vendors so they’ll have ample time for tweaks and feedback.

Sign up for dance lessons, if desired.

1 TO 2 MONTHS BEFORE:

Mail invitations.

Do a hair and makeup run-through (with headpiece).

Meet with the caterer to finalize a menu. Send programs, menus and escort cards to the stationer to be printed (if not using a calligrapher).

Send your wedding announcement to local newspapers, if desired.

Write thank-you notes as you receive gifts. Maintain a list of all presents received and thank-yous written.

2 TO 4 WEEKS BEFORE:

Plot the seating for the reception. Confirm times with all vendors.

Have your final dress fitting.

Write your rehearsal dinner toast. Compose your vows, if desired. Visit the salon for one last cut and color. Send escort cards and the seating chart to your calligrapher to fill in guests’ names and table numbers.

Enter RSVPs into a guest-list database, and call invitees who haven’t yet responded.

Get your marriage license. If you’re changing your name, order several extra copies.

If changing your name, make arrangements

with Social Security, Department of Motor Vehicles, credit card companies and your bank. Mail the rehearsal dinner invitations, if applicable.

Stock the bar using your final head count as a guide.

Send out as many final vendor payments as you can.

Provide addresses for drivers of transport vehicles.

Create a must-take “shot list” and discuss it with your photographer.

Compile the fees that will be due on the wedding day.
