FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to our summer issue! We are so excited to share our magazine with you. We have spent the last three months gathering information, doing interviews, arranging and executing photo shoots and writing articles, all with the goal of bringing you the best wedding magazine money can buy. I am so proud of my staff for all of their hard work, done under extremely trying circumstances. I have never been prouder! We sincerely hope that you can find some inspiration within these pages and that the Nola Wedding Guide can help you to plan the wedding of your dreams. Some highlights of this issue include: a full length interview with John Paul DeJoria, who is the co-founder of Paul Mitchell Systems and Patron Tequila. John Paul was gracious enough to speak with us about his hair products, tequila and all of his charitable contributions to New Orleans and the world. He is a great man and I know that you will enjoy his story and insight. We have an informative article that assists full figured brides in finding the perfect dress, and a great article about finding the perfect flowers for your wedding day. Our pictorials in this issue are simply stunning and really showcase our beautiful venues, as well as the talent of the people involved in the shoots. We hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed doing them. Thank you to all involved! Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13:7 I have recently undergone some great blessings and been surrounded by the love of God and some very special people. These people supported me through some uneasy times and I am eternally thankful. They are: my family, Traci Howerton, Barbara Soto Kessel, Elly Seip, Stephany Cure, Sarah Peneguy, Heather Hagar Burnham, Melissa Estess, Bobby Asaro, Jill Mercer, No Idea and many others. God Bless,

This magazine is dedicated to the memory of Chet Pourciau and David Philastre. R.I.P.

FUN Guestbook Ideas YOU WON’T BE ABLE TOby Sarah PASS UP Peneguy

DATE NIGHT IDEAS Guests can sign in by writing a date night idea on popsicles sticks (the big ones), and then on the back of the stick sign their name – you could even go as far as asking them to place a random future date on the stick to suggest when the bride and groom should have their date nights.

POLAROID CAMERA GUESTBOOK Have your guests take a Polaroid picture as soon as they enter the reception. Make sure they sign the bottom of it and place it in the photo album. Your guests can place the pictures in the album in order of arrival, or they can be placed randomly throughout. This is a small and easy way to remember loved ones who were there during your special day.

PUZZLE PIECE GUESTBOOK A couple may have their guests sign the backs of puzzle pieces – the puzzle could be a blown up picture of a favorite engagement photo, a wedding photo, or just something that means a lot to both the bride and the groom. Every time the couple would like to reminisce, putting a puzzle back together again and again can be exciting and also therapeutic.

Love, Bob & Marcy

I love you both! ~ Lucy

WEDDING MAD LIBS GUESTBOOK Instead of having your wedding guests sign into a book, put a stack of Mad Libs by the entrance instead. Have guests fill them out. The Mad Lib could include things such as, where your guests are traveling from and what mode of transportation did they arrive in, if your guests are enjoying the reception or ceremony, and what they wish for the couple’s future together. Have them sign their name at the very bottom. Also, have a three-hole-puncher on the table so when guests are finished their Mad Lib they know to hole punch that piece of paper. Once the night is over collect all the Mad Libs, even the ones with food and drink stains and tie all of them up with ribbon featuring the wedding colors. This gives a little extra entertainment for the night, and also creates great memories to enjoy throughout the marriage.

Make your favors personal by having your guests sign the pages of your favorite book, a set of poems that are important to you or your partner. Buy an extra copy of the book, just so the one you originally love isn’t damaged by tons of signatures. The extra copy is for your guests, and for you and your partner to keep throughout the years - this copy will hold new memories, almost as if it is a clean slate for the both of you.

PLANNING Planning

Marriage LICE N SLicense E to Wed

Stacy Marks

When you apply for your marriage license, at least one party must appear in person. He or she must have all the necessary information and documents outlined below.

IMPOrTANT INfOrMATION

AGE rEquIrEMENTS

1. State law requires a cerfitied copy of each party’s birth certificate, if born in Louisiana. Passports are not acceptable. If either party was born out-of-state, a waiver can be submitted. If either party was born out-of-country, a valid passport, naturalization papers, or green card, along with a valid state ID card or driver’s license must be presented at the office, and to a judge to obtain a waiver.

If either applicant is under 18 years of age, but more than 16, the marriage is lawful and a license may be issued if the applicants provide: written consent of both parents (or custodian), or an order from a judge or juvenille court. In the event the applicant is under 16, all the above three things will be required.

2. If either party is divorced,he/she must present a certified copy of the final divorce decree. 3. If either party is widowed, he/she must present a certified copy of a death certificate. 4. Each party must know his/her social security number, but no documentation is required. 5. Both bride and groom will need to complete a marriage license application; forms can be presented by either applicant in person.

GENErAL INfOrMATION A Louisiana license is valid in any parish in Louisiana for 30 days. There is a 72-hour waiting period between the time of issuance and the ceremony. Only a district judge or Justice of the Peace can waive this. Newlyweds should order a certified copy of their marriage license two weeks after the marriage to ensure that the license has been returned and recorded.

H We met on May 20th, out with a group of our own friends at Morgan’s Bar in the Hudson Hotel. He saw me and introduced himself and invited me over to his friend’s birthday table. I remember this sense of warmth and peace, and I will never forget when he held my hand to lead me across the dance floor. We had our first real date a week later!

He proposed to me on a Sunday morning in Central Park with our son Harrison.

Msgr. Robert Ritchie came from St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York to perform our wedding ceremony at Immaculate Conception Jesuit Church. Without his help, the wedding would not have been possible in October.

Funny thing, no one was able to bustle my dress after the ceremony for the second line parade so my two gracious flower girls held their umbrellas and my train across Canal Street and all the way down Bourbon Street!

People all over the streets and balconies were cheering and taking photographs, some even joined the line. Benny Jones and the Treme Brass Band lead the parade, which made it quite a memorable experience.

The first time we said “I love you” was walking the streets of the French Quarter. New Orleans has always been a special place for me and quickly became one for Mike after his visit.

D The first time we crossed paths was at N.O.Vative Printing. We saw each other multiple times before we started dating.

Jared proposed at the Brooklyn Bridge in New York - A trip that was supposed to be a celebration for New Years. It was a wonderful surprise.

Planning our wedding was a long decision making process. We wanted to have something different, not so traditional, and to include things that have meaning to us.

Our wedding was held at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport Terminal. On our first visit to see the Terminal, we walked up to look at one of the murals. It was of New York and the Manhattan Bridge. It was the perfect symbolism of Stacie and I’s first walk as a newly engaged couple.

Jared flew his groomsmen in on a private plane. They flew in from Louis Armstrong Airport to the Terminal.

Jared wrote his own vows for the ceremony.

Exotic

Summer Wedding Themes by Ana E. Seip

It’s official, weddings with personality are here to stay. Gone are the days of cookie cutter weddings that followed every rule and tradition. Choosing a theme that incorporates a culture you love, or is part of your heritage is a great place to start. Below are creative suggestions on how to make your local wedding seem more exotic.

Asian Theme Asian culture has always been a source of fascination to Americans because of how they respect and cherish their history. Asian events are usually filled with pageantry, yet reflect the tradition of family in a time honored way. To add some gorgeous Japanese concepts to your big day, you may wish to add some nature to the mix. If you can find blooming cherry blossoms, that would be ideal, but using faux stand ins or creating a similar look with ivy and small flowers on an arched trellis can be just as stunning. For your dress, there are many great kimono infused western dresses. Kimonos would also make fabulous gifts for your bridesmaids, and can be worn while getting ready. For the reception, you can have origami place cards and intricate paper lanterns hanging above the tables

or the dance floor. Red, orange, and purple are popular colors for weddings in Japan. You may wish to use these colors to create a fruity signature cocktail or tea. Other Asian inspiration ideas are: use orchids in the bouquets for a classic touch, and give out delicate Asian fans or special chopsticks as favors.

PLANNING Moroccan Theme For those of us who are more boho at heart, here is the perfect theme for you. Morocco calls to mind a desert theme that melds different cultures such as, Roman, Islamic and French. Any movie or cultural buff will have a good time at this event, and with such a colorful presentation it will not be a wedding easily forgotten. One word: Colorful. That really is the secret to this bohemian, eclectic theme. Bright pink, blue, purple, orange, and green are all great but the most important for final touches is gold. Lanterns are a huge part of this look, and create a great mysterious atmosphere. Jeweled headbands can be a welcome addition to this theme. Imagine walking down a candle-lit aisle with colorful fabric billowing in the wind. This colorful fabric can also include the bridesmaid’s dresses because flowing floorlength dresses are a great option for a Moroccan theme. Find a venue with plenty of interesting architecture and colorful tile flooring and then put vibrant flowers and pillows in an array of colors in every corner to make sure nothing is left neutral. Make sure the plates and glasses are as colorful as everything else in the room and go crazy when dressing the table. Be sure to use gold throughout to tie everything together.

your wedding the best party of the year, because who doesn’t love wine and calamari? Blue and white are obvious color choices that stem from the country flag as well as the white houses and blue water adorning the coastline. Navy bridesmaids dresses look great next to your white dress, and both can be draped Grecian style. Don’t be afraid to layer on the metallic jewelry because both gold and silver look great with this style. If you really want to up the glam factor, wear “crown” headbands to hold back your soft curls. Gladiator sandals also make nice gifts for your girls. You can pick any simple venue and easily add a lot of candles and stringed lights along with some greenery to set the mood. Put an olive branch in the bouquet and boutonnieres to symbolize peace and add some Greek key patterns on your invites and place cards to keep the theme in all of your details. Giving Jordan almonds, or koufeta in Greek, as your favors is a nod to tradition. With these touches you are ready for your own big fat Greek wedding. Opa!

Greek Theme In the land of tan skin and bluer than blue water, a culture of respect for your family thrives and even if you don’t have any Greek in your blood, this sentiment can be appreciated by any family. Throwing a Mediterranean themed event could make

D We attended high school together, I fell in love with him the first day of freshman year in religion class, but we didn’t exactly get along the first few years of high school. Senior year we became friends and started dating our freshman year at LSU.

The camp we always spent Fourth of July at had been gutted after hurricane Isaac, and we decided to stop by and see the progress and when we got to the front porch, I turned around and he was down on one knee. I snatched the ring from his hand, shoved it on my finger, laughed and hollered, YES! We later laughed about how we acted in the moment, he was so nervous and shaky and I had always imagined acting more romantic, but nope, not me, I snatched that ring as if he may change his mind at any moment!

The hardest part of planning the wedding was deciding on the design of the wedding cake. Because I had always dreamed of a winter wedding in the snow and my love for Christmas season, I decided on a winter wonderland scene with the bottom to replicate a snow covered gingerbread village. The cake was topped with my grandparents’ vintage wedding topper; it was perfect.

When I saw the barn at Liuzza Land, I knew that was the perfect venue for us. It is surrounded by strawberry fields and animals and it is rustic and romantic.

It ended up raining all day, but it was still the best day of my whole life. The perfect wedding I never knew I actually wanted.

traditional ideas that are no longer Traditional by Sarah Peneguy

Bridesmaid’s Dress Having your entire bridal party wear the same color and style of dress has long been wedding tradition. However, realizing that every woman has a different body type and shape may lend itself to choosing a different dress for each girl. Having the same color, just in varying styles, is a new way to go, or you could even have your bridesmaids choose a dress out of a few color choices you give them. Either way, your bridesmaids will end up feeling more comfortable and beautiful throughout the evening.

Wedding Bands Matching wedding bands for the bride and groom have evolved somewhat in recent years. Today, the idea of choosing a band for yourself and having it symbolize who you are is an idea that is catching fire. To twist it up, you and your partner could pick out a wedding band for one another – it would be a sweet surprise to see what you chose for him/her at the ceremony. Your wedding bands don’t necessarily need to match to represent the connection between the both of you.

The ‘Bridal Chorus’ Walking down the aisle to the most beloved ‘Bridal Chorus’ by Wagner is typically the thing to do for a wedding. However, it is still completely acceptable to choose whichever song pleases you. For example, walking down to other instrumental classics by Vivaldi, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, etc. is perfectly acceptable. You could even go as far as choosing a song from a favorite movie, such as Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, or even a Disney movie that means a lot to you. Instrumental, lyrical, no matter the format, choose something that you believe to be beautiful and special.

Two-sided Seating (for Guests) Traditionally, having your guests separated and seated on either side of the aisle for the bride and groom was the way to go. Allowing your guests to mingle and sit wherever they please has become more fashionable. It creates a sense of togetherness and mixing of families. The guests are able to have a better vantage point of the couple, and the couple has the great sense of literally being surrounded by their loved ones.

Diamond Rings Even choosing a diamond engagement ring isn’t a tradition you have to stick with if you don’t want to. Having a diamond as the stone for your engagement ring is still the most popular gem to choose, but recently brides are starting to branch into sapphires, pink amethysts, and also opals. Choosing any type of stone for your ring is justifiable since it’s also something that reflects who you are.

White Wedding Dress Besides the bride and groom, the bride’s wedding dress is the star of the show and normally it’s a white wedding dress. This idea is slowly changing to incorporate colors such as blush, off-white, cream, and occasionally colors as outrageous as red and black. No longer does the dress have to be white – you can choose whichever color you like. Even if you would like to remain traditional, choosing a colorful sash, or belt for the dress is a great way of expressing yourself even more. Also, having colorful shoes is another way to add pop to your ensemble.

Unfortunately, knowing what to do to get into the best shape possible can be a very daunting task. Most people do not know where to start, or know how to keep going after the start. Once the progress stops, motivation will dwindle and a lot of people will give up all together. That is where the professional fitness coaches at Revolution Fitness Nola would love to help! Imagine if you had a fitness coach guiding you and motivating you everyday to help you reach your goals. Based on your needs and ability we would create a program for you and ensure that you are properly executing the program so that you get the

One on One with John Paul DeJoria Interview by Ana E. Seip

John Paul DeJoria is known the world over as a businessman and philanthropist. He is the cofounder of Paul Mitchell Systems and Patron Tequila. We sat down with John Paul days before Mardi Gras and asked him about his success in the beauty and tequila industries. We were joined by Laurie Spellman, owner of Ultimate Face Cosmetics and Mark Palermo of Vanguard Salon Systems. NWG: Give us a brief history of your success, the story behind the hair products. JP: We were trying to start a company and needed half a million dollars and the backer pulled out. We started the company with $700 in 1980. It took us two years to pay our bills on time, not even break even. But we believed that what we had was the best hair care products, and that hairdressers would like them so much that they would recommend our products to their customers. That’s how we started John Paul Mitchell Systems. Today, we are the largest independently owned professional hair care company in the nation, perhaps the world. NWG : If you were to style your ideal bride, what would she look like? JP: She would have beautiful hair that didn’t get in her face. She would be perfectly made up without going overboard. She would be dressed in a gown that fit her personality, as well as

68

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

her figure. And lastly, she would have a big smile on her face. It’s very important that anyone getting married should make sure they go to a professional hair stylist. A lot of times they have friends do their hair. MP: Another good point is that a Paul Mitchell hairdresser would be proficient in Ultimate Face cosmetics. Ultimate Face was developed for professional makeup artists, who are more discriminating, yet the line is also very user-friendly for everyday consumers. LS: The goal is for the bride to get a good result, and to get back those photos and love them for life. That’s one of the most critical aspects of the school, by having a great hair stylist and makeup artist, you won’t look back on your day and think, 1990. You want your man to recognize you. A real professional knows how to split the difference. If you just say yes to a bride, and you make an error, it’s still your error. They’re counting on you to steer them in the right direction. Same thing with hair. If they want an up-do and they just don’t have the hair for it, you have to be realistic with your bride. While at the same time, you want to give her the fantasy of her dream wedding coming true. The goal is to be kind of invisible as a pro. You don’t even see all of these things going on and yet the bride looks flawless. That is always our goal and then we vanish away, and you never even know we were there.

JP: Marilyn Monroe made an interesting statement when she said “It takes me three hours everyday to become Marilyn Monroe. Three hours every day with hair and makeup to become me.” LS: And she had a very specific persona of that classic beautiful look. And it’s still the most emulated look in the entire world. And for a bride, a more dialed down but similar look is a great look. NWG: We know that you are building houses and giving so much to our community with your St. Bernard Project. What made you feel like you needed to come down here? JP: Because it was the thing to do. We feel that, in philanthropy, it’s not only giving something back, but showing up is much more important. Last time I was in New Orleans, we were working with hammers and nail guns building a house. We feel that success unshared is failure. And just to send some money is great, but to give them some of your time is better. Your time is much more valuable than your money. And we are just lucky enough, blessed enough, to do both. NWG: As the owner of Patron, can you suggest a signature Patron drink for someone’s wedding or party? JP: I sure can. The perfect drink for a wedding: 1 pt Patron silver, 1 quarter pt Patron Citronge, 1 whole squeezed lemon, and because we are in New Orleans, 1 pt orange juice. Shaken up in a bunch of ice, just shake it till the ice falls off. Serve it with the ice. No salt. The orange juice cuts the tartness out, and it’s just so smooth and delicious. The JP special....Repeat. Repeat in half an hour. LOL!

NWG: A lot of men and women today don’t have a lot to spend on extravagant weddings. What advice would you give them for achieving the wedding of their dreams? JP: The most important thing is how you look, not where you have it. One could have it in a beautiful park, or on the bayou, with these beautiful trees behind them. It’s how the bride looks, not what you spent to put on the wedding. LS: New Orleans is one of the most naturally beautiful places in the country. The reason why movies are so big down here is because there is every type of look and environment readily available. NWG: How has the beauty industry changed since you started in 1980? JP: Tremendously. Fashion has changed; hair changes on an ongoing basis. We find today that people want to do more things quicker. Therefore, we create products that work faster, and better than before.

New projects on the horizon:

“New is our Marula product line. And you’ll love to hear this, all ladies would, it repairs split ends up to 80%, increases shine in hair up to 80%, and it has 50% more antioxidants than any oil on the market today. And it works instantly.”

NWG: Tell me a little bit about Ultimate Face Cosmetics and how you became interested in makeup. JP: We saw how excited the Hollywood community was about these unique makeup products, and we have an “in” to some of the top salons, as well as schools, throughout the nation. In Louisiana, we have three Vanguard Paul Mitchell schools: Slidell, Metairie, and the new one in Baton Rouge, all of which offer a makeup course. LS: My husband, Gary Spellman, and I founded Ultimate Face in 2002. In 2011, Eloise DeJoria joined as a shareholder. Our company is based on education, philanthropy and fashion. The products are driven not only by fashion trends, but also classics. Everyone will always need a great concealer. We just launched an amazing product under the Eloise banner. She has a collection within our line that is very consumer oriented, and more natural and bridal.

Eloise DeJoria and Laurie Spellman

NWG: Can you give our readers an idea about the latest hair and makeup trends for 2015? LS: For brides, it’s very romantic right now and for summer, it’s true romance. Everything is really soft, the curls are really pretty and everything looks kind of period vintage. The makeup is either Hollywood glamour with a red lip and clean black eyeliner, or it’s a beautiful smoky eye with a nude lip. We have launched a new lip color called Bella, which is marsala, so it’s a purple base and we have a lip-gloss called Porto, which is exactly like straight wine, but giving you the shine. I always feel like burgundy wine is classic, and they’re calling it the trend color of the year. To me, wine is always in. NWG: I know you do a lot of work in Africa… JP: Not only Africa, but Asia, Central and South America, as well as all over the United States. Everything from building houses in Louisiana to helping people in the Appalachian Mountains through an initiative I founded called Grow Appalachia. It’s about getting thousands of families growing their own vegetables. I buy their equipment, their seeds and fertilizer and pay to get people to educate them on how to grow their own gardens. We have programs for the homeless, to get them back to work, as well as programs to help save the oceans. Our motto is “Success unshared is failure,” and whether it’s at Patron, Paul Mitchell or local Vanguard schools, everyone shares that motto. It is part of the curriculum, part of the culture. Learning how to give back and help your community.

NWG: What exactly made you want to go into the tequila business? JP: I was sitting around with a friend of mine, who was going down to Mexico, and I asked him to find some tequila that the aristocrats drink. This was in 1988/89. He came back with these very plain looking bottles, but it was the smoothest tequila I had ever tasted. He had met this fellow named Francisco, who was the chief of all tequilas. He wanted to make what we tasted even smoother, and we agreed that if we could put them in recycled glass bottles, I’d certainly be interested in looking at it. So, I ordered 1,000 cases, which is 12,000 bottles. They were very expensive to make because of the quality of the agave that we used, however it was smoother than any tequila we had ever experienced. When we came out with it, the average bottle of tequila sold for 5 dollars.

Our tequila sold for 37 dollars a bottle. My thinking was that people are not used to premium tequilas in the United States and they will love it. If not, then everyone I know for the next ten years will get a beautiful bottle of tequila as presents. Well it took off, and today Patron is the number one ultra premium tequila in the world, by far. We still make it the old fashioned way, the way we did in 1989 in Mexico. NWG: Is there anything you would like a New Orleans bride to know about you? JP: That I want them to be happy, healthy and financially successful. Happiness and health are the number one priorities, everything else is not important. God wants you to be happy and healthy. That’s how I preach it! Hallelujah! That’s my interpretation of the Bible. He wants us to be happy and healthy. On top of that, Do unto others as they do unto you. Do whatever you want as long as you don’t hurt anybody. Even if it’s naughty...Can I have that third drink? It’s a little naughty, but its not hurting anybody. As long as you’re not going to drive!

Dress to Impress

PLANNING

The thing that makes the Ball Gown Wedding Dress, a.k.a, the “Fairy-Tale wedding gown” a truly idyllic style is its flattering adherence to practically any body type. Usually matched with fitted bodices, these dresses flare out from the hips, providing just the right amount of sensational and over-the-top glamour. A fitted waist works best for this design, and petite body types may find these dresses a bit overpowering for their small frames. However, if high drama and spellbinding impact are what you’re striving for on the big day, you can’t go wrong with this dress!

88

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

The Modified A-Line features a skirt that slips lightly past the hips and gradually flares to the hem, forming an “A shape. Slightly less forgiving than the A-Line Wedding dress-which flatters most body types-the modified A-line fits more snugly against the body. Petite women love this dress because of its elongating qualities and ultimate figure flattery!

The Trumpet Gown, like the Mermaid, hugs the body and really emphasizes the shape. However, the Trumpet dress is easier to walk in as it is slightly fuller and flares higher on the leg. If you’re not the most graceful of brides but still want the sleek, sexy look that the mermaid gown provides, the trumpet gown is your best option.

PLANNING

The Sheath Gown is made to fit close to the body, with little accoutrement. Usually falling to just around the knees or lower thighs, this gown is especially great for summer weddings, but can also be great for the fall. Its basic column-like design makes it easy to dress up or down and accessories like satin sashes can be easily added to cinch the waist and accentuate most figures.

The Mermaid is snugly fit through the bodice, down through the hips, all the way to the knees before flaring out at about the mid or lower calf. This curve-hugging gown is certain to show off all the right parts of the female form. Hourglass figures or women with athletic, boyish body types will love this dress, but petite women may find that it makes them appear shorter. If you are fit but buxom, this sexy gown is for you!

P I was having a girls weekend in Mobile, and we went out one night. When we walked into the venue, I was in front and he came up to me and said, “You must be the boss...” We talked on the phone and had a few dates while we were long distance, but started dating full time in 2012.

While vacationing in Jamaica for my birthday, I was getting a massage when the masseuse told me to open my eyes, and when I did, there was Terence with the ring. I screamed because I didn’t expect to see him there and then he asked me to be his wife and I said yes!

Most of our guests had traveled far to come and celebrate with us on our special day and planning the wedding with that in mind, I wanted to give them a taste of New Orleans. We had the wedding outdoors on the lawn, with carriage rides, fireworks, a second line band and Mardi Gras Indians. The best surprise of the night was when Terence played his trombone with the second line band. Our guests told us that they had the time of their lives and so did we.

My most memorable moments were the ones where I saw my children participate, from doing my makeup to walking me down the aisle.

Another very special moment was when I was on the carriage and saw Terence waiting at the end of the aisle. The scenery was so beautiful it took my breath away.

My dad was so hilarious. He made everyone laugh when it was time to announce “We Do.” He forgot what he was supposed to say... and I said “I Do” too soon and the pastor told me, “I know you do, just not now...”

Dress Shopping Tips for THE Full Figured Bride by Melissa Estess

Wedding dress shopping for any bride can be as daunting and stressful as it is exciting, but if you are a plus-size bride in a boutique filled with sample size 10 gowns, it can sometimes seem impossible. Shopping for your perfect gown should never be an unpleasant experience. Every body type is beautiful, and you should not settle for anything short of your dream gown! Below is some advice to help keep your shopping experience as pleasant and memorable as possible.

Call in Advance Don’t be afraid to call ahead before you visit a store to see if they carry larger sized samples. At The Bridal Boutique by MaeMe, we recognize the importance of having gowns in a variety of sizes to try on. Holding a gown in front of you in a mirror just doesn’t have the same effect as feeling a gown on your body! Our plus-size department offers over 50 gowns ranging in sizes from 18-28 to accommodate all figures! Also, calling in advance to schedule a weekday appointment allows for a more relaxed, one-on-one experience with an expert stylist, and cuts down on feeling overwhelmed in a sea of gowns with crowds of other brides also in search of their dream gown!

Choosing your shopping partner(s) Shop with someone you trust, who listens and supports you, but can still offer their honest opinion. Limit your entourage to three or fewer. Too many opinions can cause confusion and insecurity. Remember: this is your special day, so the focus should be on what you want and what makes you feel confident and beautiful!

bring your support Start with a solid foundation of the undergarments you plan to wear for your wedding. A well fitting bra and smoothing shape wear can dramatically change the fit of a gown. Give yourself permission to explore different styles, because you might be surprised with the looks you can wear! Use your stylist to your advantage! Ask for recommendations and explore your options to customize a gown by adding sleeves or straps to achieve the most confident you!

Saying YES to your dress After you’ve had your moment and found THE dress, your measurements will be taken to select the proper size gown. A lot of brides might think that buying a smaller wedding dress will motivate them to shed weight before the wedding, but the truth is, it only adds a lot of unnecessary stress! Remember that wedding dress sizes are not the same as your everyday clothes, so be prepared to wear 2-3 sizes larger than you normally wear. Ignore the number, and order for your current measurements! Your fiance’ loves you just the way you are, and he would rather have a happy wife, than a stressed out, hungry wife trying to fit into a gown that is too small!

Your wedding gown is a symbol of your big day, a day that will change your life forever. Focus on the marriage Our last bit of advice is to stay focused on why you are getting married in the first place. The love of your life. The single person you want to share every morning with! Your wedding gown is a symbol of your big day, a day that will change your life forever. The forever is what your dress is really about! Have fun, feel beautiful, and be proud of the woman that you are, because that woman is loved!

King Louis Sun King Cocktail Ring

Reagan Charleston is an artist in every sense of the word. She is a bold woman, whose design collection reflects her personality perfectly. Reagan’s designs are for the woman who wants to make a statement! As a child, Reagan spent many hours in her grandparents French Quarter metal smith shop. At the time, she didn’t particularly like being there, but her early exposure to her family’s business would later have a profound impact on her own artistic aspirations.

Queen Victoria Serpent Ring

While studying at Louisiana State University and preparing applications for law school, Reagan began creating her own designs as fashion statements. She viewed them mainly as an outlet for her creativity. However, her travels to Europe would ultimately inspire her to forego her law aspirations and decide to start her own design business. Creating wearable art became her passion. Speaking of inspiration, she says, “I have always loved nature and the elements and often draw on them for my pieces, but really inspiration could come from something as

simple as a doorknob in a small Italian village.” A self proclaimed accessory girl, she describes her designs as, “Edgy, but beautiful and ornate. This is jewelry for a girl that wants to make a statement.” A particular piece to note is Reagan’s Queen Victoria Serpent Ring. She designed this ring specifically to be worn as a wedding band or with a wedding set. It’s part of her Royals Collection. Classically, the twoheaded serpent represents eternity. When Price Albert proposed to Queen Victoria, he did so with a doubleheaded serpent ring, which brought the snake motif back into vogue during the Victorian Era.

Sterling Silver Leone Necklace

Reagan’s jewelry and handbags are handcrafted in precious metals and feature precious and semiprecious stones that she personally selects for color and character. She can also custom design any piece and has done custom pearls for weddings. She has cufflinks for men and her designs make the perfect bridesmaid gifts. Reagan loves New Orleans and is married to former New Orleans Saint and Super Bowl champion, Jeff Charleston, and cites him as her strength and support system as she furthers her business. Reagan says, “Jeff is always so positive and supportive. He is still waiting for me to design an alligator belt for him.” www.reagancharleston.com Emerald Adorned Medusa RING

ADVICE

W i sb er i d e Bridesmaid’s Dress Budget

Q

I am really worried about asking my bridesmaids to spend more than they can afford for their dresses, what is a good budget for a bridesmaid’s dress? ~ Anna Poluzzo, New Orleans, LA

A

Choosing a bridesmaid’s dress is a little bit different than choosing your own wedding dress. When choosing your dress all you have to worry about is your own budget and how much you can afford, but with bridesmaids you have to worry about how much they can afford. You should be respectful and considerate when choosing a bridesmaid’s dress. Yes, this is your day and ultimately about you, but just remember others are involved in your day and want it to be special for you. Help them make it special for you. A good budget for a bridesmaid’s dress would be $175-$225. And remember, they will be more likely to be happy about buying an expensive dress if they actually like the dress, so listen to what they have to say about style, color, etc. If you communicate with them about price, style and color choice it can go a long way to alleviating any issues.

Who Should Give Me Away?

Guest List: Who Makes the Cut?

Breaking Tradition

Q

Q

My fiancé and I just chose a smaller venue than we originally thought, how can I reduce my guest list so we can all fit? ~ Jessica Marie, Metairie, LA

A

Reducing your guest list can be difficult, but just try to think in terms of the present. If it’s been 2-3 years since you’ve last seen someone, they probably can be cut from the list. Also, set rules with your partner concerning the guest list and stick to them. Pick an even amount of people for each of you, and put everyone into categories: immediate family and friends, relatives, children, or even acquaintances. Try trimming your list down by cutting out categories and by asking yourself which categories are most important.

Q

I’m having trouble choosing who walks me down the aisle. Should it be my biological father or my stepfather. I am closer to my stepfather. What should I do? How do I choose? ~ Bethany Smith, Houma, LA

A

This is tricky. How about allowing them both to walk you down the aisle? Be sure to discuss it with each one of them beforehand to avoid any awkward feelings. Another option would be to have your real father start your walk, and then hand you off halfway to your stepfather. You may also choose to do the same thing for your father/daughter dance.

My family is very traditional but my fiancé and I are really relaxed and just want a fun wedding. Should I follow my family’s strict wedding traditions? ~ Shea Patterson, New Orleans, LA

A

Not necessarily. If the thought of following those traditions makes you unhappy, then I would suggest forgoing those traditions in favor of your own happiness. But if including some semblance of tradition would make your parents happy without ruining your day, I would suggest that you, at least, think about their feelings. Consideration of others feelings, and learning to compromise are great traits that will help you throughout your life. Also, traditions have more meaning than you may realize. Compromise is the key.

unique ideas for wedding Favors

by Sarah Peneguy

Coffee Bean Set Another great favor for your wedding guests would be assembling a variety of coffee beans. Maybe add a special meaning to some of them on the package, such as the first coffee date we ever went on, or the first coffee the groom bought for the bride, and vice versa. This is also a cute way to allow your guests to experience some part of the journey the couple shared together.

Succulents in Teacups These teacups could be found at the table, doubling as place cards as well as decorations. Have your guests’ names on the teacups, or have a card placed on the side so the guest will know where their seat is and also that this plant is theirs to take home. The succulents add a nice, calming color to the tables, and they give the room an outside feel, even if the wedding is inside.

Coasters

Thank You Place Cards Write a personalized thank you note for your loved ones and use it as a place setting card. The guest’s name could be written on the front and on the back a note expressing your appreciation to the people who helped the bride and groom get to where they are today.

Sweets Buffet Make your favors of the sweet variety with a cookie or candy buffet near the exit. Have to-go containers on the table so when guests leave they know they can take the couple’s favorite sweet treats with them. Other ideas for your sweet buffet are cake pops, donuts, jars of homemade jam, a s’mores kit is also quite simple and thoughtful, or even some Café Du Monde Beignet Mix would make great favors for your guests, especially for a New Orleans’ wedding. Remember to put initials of the bride & groom, or their wedding colors on any containers for the sweets.

Spice Set Give your guests a set of spices at the end of the night. In a city known for it’s highly seasoned food, giving out spices such as cayenne pepper, garlic, salt, onion, celery, thyme, basil would be considerate and classic. Even adding some vanilla extract to the combination would make a sweet addition.

Have pictures printed onto coasters for your guests. Make the pictures meaningful to the union of the bride and groom, not necessarily pictures of them per se, but along the lines of images of their interests, such as maybe the groom/bride plays guitar, maybe they first met on a cruise, or the bride/groom loves the outdoors. These coasters can symbolize the couple’s journey from when they met to their wedding day.

G We met at a Halloween party in 2008, and started chatting on Myspace after that. From that, we went on our first official date for sushi at Sake Cafe.

He took me to the Windsor Court Hotel’s restaurant. As I’m looking out the window waiting for our food, I saw an elderly couple getting out of their car and the husband held his wife’s hand as they walked into the hotel. I told Jose to look how cute this couple was and that I hope we will still be as romantic as they are when we’re that age. As I say that, I turned around and there he was on his knee and he said, I would love to do that, will you married me? I was in shock, shaking and crying with joy. Before I could even say yes, I asked him if he had hired the old couple!

There was a lot of preparation because my family is Vietnamese and his is Hispanic. We really wanted both families to be happy, and luckily for us, his family loved that we were going to do a traditional Vietnamese wedding. For months, our parents would meet and talk to each other about the wedding and it was a great opportunity for them to get to know each other.

The best part of the wedding day for me was the tea ceremony. It was truly beautiful and very emotional. I’m so happy that I did it that way, keeping my culture even though I was born and raised here in America. The tea ceremony left everyone full of joy and tears.

The reception to me was just about fun, and celebrating with everyone. We also went to each table and made a toast with everyone and thanked them for coming to celebrate with us, and most guests gave us an envelop with money in it, which is tradition. Instead of bringing gifts they all come and give you cash as if they are helping you with the wedding.

summer Flowers for your wedding

One common thread throughout most weddings is flowers. Whether its flowers cascading from the ceiling, or just the simplicity of the bride’s bouquet, flowers make everything more special and give us a connection to the earth. As your wedding day approaches, making a decision about which flowers to hold, wear, and decorate with, can be an arduous task. Here are our five picks for summer wedding flowers.

sunflower Originally classified as the ‘adoring’ flower, the sunflower is unwavering in faithfulness due to the lovely fact that it is always facing the direction of the sun, following it throughout the day. It is also a sign for cheerfulness and happiness. This is a good flower to use as a boutonniere for a summer wedding or even a great flower to have in your bridesmaid’s bouquets. This is the flower to hold when you’re feeling loyal to your friends, or adoring to your partner. A symbol that let’s them know you will follow them wherever they decide to go, or vice versa.

by Sarah Peneguy

beautiful in a bride’s bouquet or a groom’s boutonniere representing the worthiness they have for each other.

zinnia Zinnias usually mean affection for your friends. They, like tulips, come in many different colors. An assortment of zinnias with multiple colors represents thoughts about an absent friend. Yellow zinnias, for example, mean daily remembrance. Zinnias are beautiful and unique-looking summer flowers. These flowers would look beautiful in your bridesmaids’ bouquets; a flower that will hold that special meaning for them.

Forget-Me-Nots

tulip Tulips come in wide array of colors, all of which have different meanings. Yellow tulips represent cheerfulness, purple represents royalty, white tulips mean forgiveness, or just to assert worthiness for another, and red tulips represent eternal love. Tulips originated in Turkey as well as Persia. So it’s not that hard to believe that a legendary tale about a Persian king, an Armenian princess, and a sculptor who falls in love with her is how the meaning of the red tulip begins. It is said in the tale that the sculptor – thinking the princess was dead – killed himself by flinging himself off a cliff, but each drop of blood on the way bloomed into red tulips. Symbolizing his eternal love for the Armenian princess. Tulips would be great flowers to have in your wedding decorations. Especially for the diverse colors and their diverse meanings. White tulips would be

your summer wedding.

Forget-me-nots are a classic bunch of flowers that share the symbolism for remembrance, but instead of friendship, it’s for the one you love above all else. Whether that’s the love for your partner, or a child, this flower represents that all-encompassing love you hold for them. Unconditional love. This flower symbolizes, in simple terms, to remember the ones you love in everyday life and the love you have for one another – a flower that needs to be represented somewhere in

gardenia This flower only comes in pure white, or some have a little bit of a pink tinge to them. Gardenias represent beginnings – or the feelings associated with the new beginnings. These flowers symbolize the beginning of falling in love with someone. It portrays the feeling before the fall – the tingling in your stomach that spreads through your whole body. Gardenias represent that budding romance and what it could eventually turn into.

Richie Scheuermann

F E AT U R E D C O U P L E

We love to feature real couples as much as we can in the Nola Wedding Guide. Their stories and ideas serve as inspiration to our readers, and we also enjoy hearing all about their love and wedding planning experiences. One of the most popular ways to tell these stores is through our Featured Couple Facebook Contest. Since we started the contest a few years ago it has grown into a much anticipated and highly coveted staple for each issue. We had upwards of 5,000 votes on the three finalists, but of course we can only have one winner, and that couple was Kaylin Burrows and Richie Scheuermann. Their wedding will be November 15, 2015, and we are happy to share their love story and upcoming wedding plans. NWG: How did you meet? Kaylin: We actually met on social media. We had a lot of mutual friends and he started flirting with me and messaging me. He tried to be cool and started asking me about my work. I told him I worked at a dancing school, and when he asked where, we realized I teach his godchild and he had been to all the dance revues! We hit it off from then on. Richie: At the time, I was on a strict diet and I was looking through my Instagram and I saw a plate of some pretty good looking food posted by Kaylin, so I commented on it saying something like, I need to get on your meal plan. From then on we started talking and realized we had a lot of the same friends

and a lot in common. I asked her out numerous times until finally I talked her into the first date. NWG: Describe your first date. Kaylin: I personally hate first dates and I even tried to cancel on him because I was having a hair malfunction and because I was so nervous. But he kept insisting and wouldn’t take no for an answer and I’m so glad he didn’t. We went out to eat downtown at La Bayou and had a great time. From then on I knew he was different and I wanted to get to know him better. Richie: Our first date was actually very good considering she tried to cancel on me for the second or third time, but somehow I talked her into coming anyway. I took Kaylin to La Bayou, where I used to work. I chose this particular restaurant because one of my really good friends works there, and I knew it would be a little easier to break the “first date” awkwardness with him waiting on us. NWG: Describe your courtship. Richie: Our relationship was amazing, I would have been a fool not to pop the question. Kaylin is truly everything that I was looking for and more. Kaylin: We were inseparable! He became my best friend and we fell head over heels for each other.

NWG: How did he propose?

NWG: Tell us about some of your wedding vendors.

Kaylin: I teach at a dancing school and I went to teach class just like I do every Monday night. My boss asked me to come in her room to see a new dance she was working on. I went in and watched the dance she choreographed to “Single Ladies” by Beyoncè and at the end of the dance she told me she wanted the teachers to pose in the middle of the floor. As I posed, out came my dog Louie wearing a tux with the words “Will you marry my daddy?” on it. I turned around and Richie was on one knee.

Kaylin: We are getting married at Southern Oaks Plantation, our photographer is Stacy Marks, and all of the dresses are from Linda Lee Bridal. I would recommend all of these places and people to everyone I know. They are all very helpful and know their stuff!

NWG: How has the planning gone so far? Kaylin: The planning is going great! Everything is pretty much done, just a few things here and there left to do. Richie: It is going great. We should have made the wedding sooner!

130

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

Richie: My groomsmen and I will be getting our tuxedos from Rome’s Tuxedos, Andreas G. Frentzos will be the videographer, and Kat’s Cake will be doing my cake. NWG: Any advice for future couples? Kaylin: Communication and compromise are key. You get what you put into the relationship. Richie: Always trust your partner and communicate. It’s okay to agree to disagree, but never go to bed mad at each other. Stay up all night to talk it out if that’s what it takes.

HONEYMOON & TRAVEL

PLANNING

Thank You NOTES It’s been a wonderful journey. You started with finding your soul mate, then planning the wedding of your dreams and now you are settling in to start your life anew. Well, you still have one more wedding related task before you - thank you notes. Most people cringe at the thought of writing a personal note thanking each person who gave them a wedding gift. Keeping it simple and personal will make the task much less foreboding. Let your appreciation shine. Here are some tips to make the task a bit easier. North Productions

You can either have personal thank you notes made (perhaps with your monogram) or you can buy preprinted ones from your local stationery store.

Handwrite each note in blue or black ink only. They are much easier to read than other colors.

Mention each gift and how you will use the give, if possible. Try not to start with “I”. Use the word “you” more than “I” or “me” in the note.

Mention any special effort the giver may have put in for you such as traveling a long distance, giving a special toast, or throwing you a party or shower.

134

nola wedding guide

www. n o l a we d d i n g g u i d e. co m

If someone was unable to attend your wedding, but still sent a gift, mention how sorry you were that they couldn’t be with you. Maybe offer to send them some pictures. Viewing your pictures online is standard for most photographers these days.

Always send separate notes for your shower and wedding gifts, even if you received them both within a short time of each other.

Try to be timely. It is proper etiquette to send a note within 2-3 weeks of receiving a gift, or 6-8 weeks at the very longest.

C Kenny and I met through a mutual friend in New Orleans. A few weeks later, I challenged him to a tennis match, which he won, and we have pretty much been together ever since.

After four years of dating, Kenny proposed one evening during the summer. We had just eaten one of our weekly meals - Chinese takeout - when he kept insisting that I read my fortune. Inside the fortune cookie and unbeknownst to me, was a fortune that he had made and asked me to marry him! It was a complete surprise!

Everything was perfect! I enjoyed the day stress-free thanks to my wonderful friends and family and the group of professionals who helped to create the best day of our lives. I’m so glad for Oscar Rajo who was able to capture our wedding day perfectly.

Walking down the aisle with my dad towards Kenny was one of the best moments of the day.

Everything was perfect, except for one thing: my zipper would not stay and the clasp above it was broken. And so, here we were, trying to watch the bride putting on her dress, the photographer was ready, the videographer was filming everything, and we all froze. It was the first time I felt nervous all day. Luckily my good friend /bridesmaid/seamstress stepped up and saved the day.

Our first dance was to the Beatles, “If I Fell”

2015 OUTDOOR WEDDING Almanac In New Orleans, outdoor ceremonies are as common as roast beef poboys. Our sub tropical climate keeps our weather pleasant year round and contributes to making our city an ideal backdrop for your special day. However, an outdoor ceremony can sometimes be tricky to plan. Knowing some basic information such as which months are the rainiest, the average temperature for each month and what time the sun sets, may mean the difference in planning for a spring wedding or holding off until the fall to get your ideal climate conditions. Also, knowing the sunset times can be crucial for getting your wedding photos just right. We have put together an almanac to assist you in planning your outdoor wedding ceremony.

Second Line Parade If you want a traditional New Orleans wedding, you want to hire a brass band for a Second Line Parade. It is a way of expressing the unique local flavor of the city. The Second Line is the parade of people following the musicians, who are called the “First Line.” The sounds of the instruments (trumpet, tuba, trombone,

sax, banjo and clarinet) are coupled with a snare and bass drum. A Grand Marshal will lead your wedding guests around a French Quarter block announcing and celebrating your event. These parades began back in the 19th century, with organizations advertising for burials and honoring the deceased all in one announcement. Many newlyweds can be seen with their umbrellas, white for the bride, black for the groom, and their guests holding handkerchiefs as they follow the band.

Quick and Simple Ways to look Lighter on your Special Day by Sarah Peneguy

BREAK OUT THE HEELS Let’s be honest, high heels automatically make a woman look taller and slimmer. Even if it’s a 3” heel instead of 6” – they still serve the same purpose. So choose a height you’re comfortable with, but if you want those beautiful pumps that are 6” be sure to practice before the big day.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT LINGERIE

Although you choose a dress that flatters you the most, choosing lingerie that also compliments your body type for underneath your dress is just as important. If you’re not a fan of your stomach or thighs (even though I’m sure they are both amazing) choosing a corset, or even some high-waisted shape wear can make you feel better on your day. Also, make sure your lingerie is the right size, in most cases when women feel uncomfortable, its mainly because the lingerie is not the right size. Take extra care to be sized correctly.

MAKE THE MOST OF PHOTO OPS Taking photos on your day is one of the most important aspects of the day. You want to remember feeling beautiful and you want these pictures to show that. Knowing how to pose with your body type is a good tidbit of info to gather before the day. For example, facing straightforward at the camera isn’t very flattering for most people. Considering the extra weight the camera adds to your body in the photos, remember to turn sideways a little – keep your body at a slight angle. Another good idea is to practice taking photos beforehand, but keep it light and fun. Don’t stress about it since that could also ruin a picture.

PRACTICE GOOD POSTURE Elegance is all in your posture: how you stand, sit, pose, etc. A slight change in your posture can make you automatically look more refined and slender. Make sure to keep those shoulders in line and your back straight. Don’t strain yourself though – if you feel uncomfortable you should probably lessen that rigid stance. Don’t be a stiff board, just hold onto some of that confidence you’re hiding and hold your head high on you day.

K We met my freshman year at Indiana University at a ZBT party and had mutual friends. I wanted to marry a “nice Jewish boy,” so I was very excited when I found one. We would stay up all night chatting on AIM and we realized that we had a class at the same time at the same building so we started walking together, which turned into lunches together...

He popped the question on our rooftop over some wine before going to dinner. Turns out, the whole family was in on it and when I showed up at the restaurant everyone was there to dine and celebrate. He also arranged for all of our friends to meet us out at the Columns afterwards. It was one of the best nights ever.

I planned everything myself. All of my vendors and the hotel were very helpful. I went to New York City and found the perfect dress.

I didn’t want typical hotel photos and I was excited to get some unique outside natural lighting shots on the street car line with the palm trees. It started to rain, but the sun quickly dried up everything. The bridesmaids had a blast outside and we even got photo bombed by a street car!

We had a traditional Jewish ceremony. We incorporated Shane’s grandfather’s old tallit to be wrapped around us. Shane broke the glass at the ceremony and we danced the Horah. The band was incredible and had everyone dancing until the very end.

It was important for me to give my guests the true New Orleans French Quarter experience. I provided them with hospitality bags filled with Zapps, beads and pralines and included a list of things to do in the city.

1. you can either have your dress professionally preserved, or you can do it yourself. Either way, your dress should be cleaned within six weeks following your wedding day. Even the smallest stains cause the dress to yellow over time.

2.

Professional gown preservation costs between $150 and $500, depending on the amount of soilage. It is recommended to bring your dress to a reputable dry cleaner who cleans about 100 dresses or more a year.

If you choose to take things into your own hands, then you must first decide between box and hanger. storage. It may be more practical to store the dress in a box, but hanger storage is the best way to prevent hardto-remove creases. Either way, buy plenty of acid-free tissue paper.

For box storage, line an acid-free cardboard box with the tissue paper and lay the hem of the dress in the box. Fold the dress like an accordion, putting tissue paper between each fold. stuff the bodice of the dress with crumpled tissue. Put some layers of tissue on top and put on the lid (make sure the lid is solid and does not have a plastic window). store the box in a cool, dry closet. Check the condition of the dress each year, and re-pack so the folds are in different places.

It was love at first sight, the perfect fit for your perfect day - your wedding dress. Although you wore it only once, if you take as much care in preserving your wedding dress as you did in choosing it, then it can be enjoyed as a family heirloom for years to come-symbolizing love and family. here are a few tips to keep your beloved garment as beautiful as the day you wore it.

5.

For hanger storage, wrap a wide hanger with cotton batting and cover it with muslin. Buy an acid free cardboard “dress shaper” and place it over the hanger. Wrap it in tissue and place the dress over it. stuff the bodice of the dress and any deep folds with the acid-free tissue paper. Cover the dress with a muslin garment bag and hang it in a cool, dry closet, taking care not to crush it with other clothing. Check the dress each year and wash the muslin cover.
