Summer smarts

Balancing play and learning to prevent the brain drain By Sarah Huber Raised in the Rockies

T

he summer brain drain isn’t inevitable. While test scores for most kids tend to drop between May and August, parents can thwart summer learning loss by encouraging a healthy balance between exploratory play and skill-building activities. Local educators emphasize that summer, first and foremost, is an opportunity to pause and be curious. Dr. Lori Kran, pedagogical director at Shining Mountain Waldorf School in Boulder, noted, “At Shining Mountain Waldorf School, we know that healthy intellectual engagement thrives when our physical and social-emotional bodies are thriving as well, so we see summer as an extended opportunity to slow down and take a deep and delicious out-breath.” Too much summer homework may result in intellectual and physical exhaustion or anxiety about school or learning in general. “Keep the skills going – literacy, mathematics and music – but consider the notion that rich, intellectual content taught during the school year needs time to digest,” Kran continued. “You may think your student forgot, but truly, they are ruminating on content, and when the crisp fall returns again, they’ll be refreshed and ready to learn.” To attain the right balance, Kran partners with teachers and families to foster ageappropriate summer engagement. Elementary school students should focus on unstructured play, often outdoors. “Start a garden and have your child share in the work,” she said. This is also a good time to dive into music lessons, establish routines or work on life skills such as shoe tying or basic budgeting. To practice math, parents can let kids take the lead on following a recipe to make dinner or a favorite dessert. For upper and middle grades, time outdoors

High schoolers might pursue a summer job that aligns with their interests or “begin research on a capstone or passion project that could naturally extend into the school year,” Kran said. Others may wish to enroll in a testing prep course or tour colleges with a parent. Because math and spelling test scores waver most during the summer, some schools will send home math and literacy assignments. Parents can also set their children up with online math and spelling games or ask teachers for resources. Khan Academy is a teacherrecommended site for both building academic skills and allowing kids to dig into their own interests. Summer clubs, camps and activities at libraries and recreational centers maximize summer joy while providing physical, emotional and mental stimulation. Summer camps can be found for nearly every interest group, from theater, art and music camps to sports, gaming and farming workshops.

Jasmine Bailon, manager of childcare programs at Boulder Valley School District, says BVSD’s Never Bummer Summer Camp is designed to “make learning a fun and engaging adventure.” Camp is intentionally designed as an “educational journey,” she said. “The varied themes and play-based activities feel different than a traditional classroom, but children are still learning and engaging.” For all ages, daily reading is paramount. Kran suggests regular family reading time with a mix of picture books, read-aloud chapter books and audiobooks. High schoolers with assigned readings for their fall English and languages classes can start a book club with classmates “to combine social time with getting homework done,” said Kran. Reading not only strengthens grammar and spelling skills but “discussing stories and ideas can enhance comprehension and critical thinking skills,” Bailon said. Whether in front of a book or in the dayto-day freedom of summer, Bailon added, “Support your child’s natural curiosity by encouraging questions and exploration. This helps them develop a mindset of continuous learning.” Summer 2024

All Ages and Abilities

ummer can be a time of magic when you’re a child. Days spent soaked in sunshine, playing and carefree are what summers are made of. Schoolwork is not. But helping your young child retain what they learned during the school year throughout the summer doesn’t have to be tedious. You can incorporate it into the magic of summer and avoid the dip in learning that so many kids

experience after a summer off. Amy French-Troy, development and communications manager for TLC Learning Center, spent more than 15 years as a K-12 teacher and says she would see kids work so hard all year and then go back half a year in their progress when they came back and dropped off from summer. Her advice to keep your kids engaged and avoid summer drop off is to follow your child’s interests. “Follow their curiosities. Help them stay engaged by taking them outside on walks and asking them what they see. Look at bugs and then look them up. Taking kids to the library regularly for events and to check out nonfiction books about what they’re interested in helps get kids interested in learning more and makes them more apt to stick with it when it comes time to read,” she says. Other ideas she gave to keep kids engaged throughout the summer include reading to your child, listening to podcasts, engaging with and talking to your child. And while these may seem obvious, intentionally engaging with your child is very different than many of the daily interactions you will have with your child. French-Troy says cooking covers math skills and directions like “first, then” and “next,” and leads into what they’ll have to learn once they go into elementary school. Playing board games and other games is good for social and emotional development and encourages taking turns and playing together. “This is important, especially now that kids are on devices so much more. We’ve seen a big decrease in fine motor skills, so anything you can do over the summer to practice things like proper pencil grip, letters and tracing is helpful.” This can be done in a fun way with lacing cards, Play Doh, clay and even using scissors. French-Troy says using scissors and other fine motor skills play such a big part in the things kids have to do during school. “Tying shoelaces or making an art project becomes difficult when you have weak muscles in your hands. Your handwriting also gets messier and your hands get tired faster. Doing crafts puzzles and playing with Legos makes kids have to work those muscles.” At the end of the day, read to your child for the love of reading. “It’s a good habit when they get into it. It teaches them that reading is not always work and encourages a love of it,” she says. “The evening is an ideal time of day for families to practice social and emotional skills and reconnect after a busy day.” For more information about TLC Learning Center, visit learningwithtlc.org. How summer camps aid in children's self-discovery and enhance their educational experience By Wendy McMillan Raised in the Rockies

I

t happens every year, yet it somehow manages to take us by surprise each time: no sooner have we penned those new year resolutions than it’s time to set up the summer calendars. When school’s out, freedom beckons, and kids need things to do. When it comes to summer activities, we’re spoiled for choice throughout our scenic state. Camps entice a full range of fun in step with kids’ vibrant imaginations, offering everything from crafts to climbing, arts to archery. On a deeper level, camps provide kids with immense opportunities for learning and growth, including building independence, social skills, confidence, and more. We reached out to several local camp providers for their insights on how camps can help kids stretch and grow.

Summer 2024

KIDS ARE EMPOWERED WITH INDEPENDENT DECISION-MAKING No matter how determined we are to steer away from so-called “helicoptering”, by its very nature parenting involves a certain amount of decision-making, whether that means setting the rules or merely weighing in. Summer camp opens doors wide open for kids to make choices. “Often kids come to us used to their parents planning out their whole days,” says Blue Mountain Ranch Youth Camp Director Tim Graf. Graf ’s grandparents founded the sleepaway camp in 1946, which he now runs with his parents, Suzie Allen Graf and Bob Graf. “Camp instills fresh independence beginning with the very way it’s set up: all the activities to choose from, decisions to make from planning the day down to what to wear in the morning. Putting kids in charge of

decisions like these is a huge area where we see a lot of growth.” At Blue Mountain Ranch, campers sign themselves up weekly for their entire week of activities, choosing from the likes of archery, rappelling, an exciting ropes course, the everpopular horseback riding, swimming, arts and crafts and much more. “With five activity periods daily, we could be offering 40 activities in a single day,” Graf says. Sleepaway camp may represent the most sheer volume of time kids are faced with decisions while away from their parents in one stretch, but day camps are equally focused and impactful when it comes to facilitating decision-making within a safe environment. “Within our summer day camp model, we have structured activities that range from arts and crafts to STEM projects, outdoors, nature-based exploration, active play, field RAISED IN THE ROCKIES 9

We think choice is really important for fostering resilience and independence.” CAMP FOSTERS SOCIAL SKILLS AND NEW CONNECTIONS At camp, kids are united with peers from a wide span of areas and backgrounds outside of their usual routines. Here kids form new friendships independent of adult vetting. Moreover, the fresh, camp experiences can go a long way in establishing connections. “While trying new things and getting better at favorite activities, we’re making new friends and creating lifelong bonds,” says Holly Hansburg, owner of Rocky Mountain Day Camp. “Our campers return to RMDC year after year so excited to see their ‘camp friends’. The connections made with both our staff and fellow campers can last a lifetime.” KIDS DEVELOP RESPONSIBILITY While the foremost allure of summer camp is the pure fun of it, embedded are opportunities to take manageable risks and take on responsibilities. Kids have to do things for themselves – gathering their swim gear, putting on sunscreen, asking for help, or taking on bigger tasks. Rocky Mountain Day

Camp’s Counselors in Training Program offers older campers leadership experience, splitting their time between assisting counselors and being campers. At Blue Mountain Ranch, kids develop responsibility for caring for animals, too, Graf says. “Kids always want to help out in our horse program – pitching in, mucking stalls, grooming, feeding. A lot of kids who have never been around horses find their way to the corral, really connecting with the animals.” CAMP ENCOURAGES KIDS TO DISCOVER THEIR BEST SELVES Self-growth may now always look “fun”, Vella says. It can be tough and uncomfortable. It may start with a child clinging to their parent’s leg. Ultimately, camps work tirelessly to facilitate environments, trusted teams, and activities that give parents peace of mind knowing their children are cared for and set up to thrive. “Our programs focus on social-emotional learning,” Vella says. “We use a specific curriculum that encourages children to tap into their individuality, find their identity, and build resilience.” Outside of facilitated growth, camp uniquely encourages kids to check in with themselves away from their typical expectations and roles and be presented with whole new arrays of choices. Here is a

boundless opportunity for kids to discover who they truly are. “Joining a new group of peers from Boulder County and beyond, campers can find new passions, hone their skills, step out of their comfort zones, and engage in new activities, all of which in turn fosters their independence and selfconfidence,” says Hansburg. rt and music camps and programs at places like Rocky Ridge Music, Studio Arts Boulder and pARTiculars help students build their confidence in being creative and innovative. “Sometimes to express yourself can be scary because you’re putting yourself out there,” said SoYoung Lee, executive director of Rocky Ridge Music, 465 Longs Peak Rd., in Estes Park. “We create a safe environment and ample opportunities for students to perform in a casual setting, so they don’t feel intimidated performing and expressing themselves.” Rocky Ridge Music, a nonprofit founded in 1942 in Estes Park, started as a summer residential music camp focused on teaching piano. The music camp operates in the summer with sessions five days to four weeks in woodwinds, strings, piano and composition for all ages from middle school to adult. There are also year-round programs, master classes, college prep study and a pedagogy series. Originally, the teachings at the summer camp were in classical music, but six years ago jazz was added, followed by mariachi two years ago and beginning strings last year. Jumpstart

for Strings teaches students the fundamentals of playing open strings and holding and tuning the instrument and gives them an opportunity for ensemble playing. “This is an educational program not just for the students but for the parents, so they can support the students,” Lee said. “They need to have an instrument and a nice place to practice.” The Summer College Intensive Program is geared toward advanced students who want to develop their solo instrument and chamber music skills and build their careers in music. “Everything is on-site, meals, lessons, rehearsals and concerts,” Lee said. “We still have a retreat-like feel whenever you enter the campus. It’s a very serene, supportive place.” Students attending the camps are at all levels of skill from beginner to advanced and are interested in simply learning about music or making it a career. “What we like to see is not necessarily creating professional musicians, but taking what they learn and applying it in other fields,” Lee said. “It has to do with the fact you’re developing different parts of the brain. You’re also engaging your heart and your feelings.” Studio Arts Boulder is a nonprofit education organization that offers ceramic programs to RAISED IN THE ROCKIES 11

Starting this summer, the nonprofit will offer summer camps at all three of its facilities, including the newest at 3750 Canfield St. scheduled to open this spring. The camps will include printmaking with lessons in block carving and cyanotypes, ceramic hand-building using low-fire clay to create functional pottery and creative sculpture, and wheel-throwing, trimming and glazing pottery. The camps are offered half-day for five days and are for ages 6-16. “We feel like everybody should be making art and has a right to. We work hard to provide a safe and supportive environment to do so,” said Aaron Winston, artistic director of Studio Arts Boulder. Studio Arts Boulder was founded in 2009 to create Sterling Circle, a campus that houses different art studios and art forms that require an investment of equipment and space, including pottery, metal and blacksmithing, glass and wood. The nonprofit took over the Pottery Lab in 2015 from the City of Boulder to teach ceramic classes there and is opening a new campus for additional classes and camps in ceramics, wood, metal, printmaking and glass. The nonprofit also offers adult programs, youth and family programs, workshops, date nights and private parties. “Our whole mission is to be an arts education facility,” Winston said. “The whole purpose of our existence is artistic expression.” Lafayette-based arts cooperative pARTiculars is an artist-run gallery and classroom space, where summer camps are offered for youth and adult art classes are held year-round with space for teens. “As a cooperative in general, part of our statement is to bring art into the community and bring our community into being part of art. We are getting the community involved in artmaking, and kids want to be part of that,” said Jeanne Hougen, co-owner of pARTiculars Art Gallery & Teaching Studio, 401 S. Public Rd. The pARTiculars Art Summer camps, which are taught by professional artists, are for four days and are divided into two age groups, 8 to 11 and 11 to 14. This summer, the camp topics will include building and decorating dollhouses, making dollhouse miniatures, drawing and painting, and for the older kids, bookmaking and art journaling, and the younger kids, multimedia. “None of our things are curriculum-driven. They’re all kids doing their art. We’re giving them some ideas and things and encouraging them to take that and run with it,” Hougen said. “Creativity increases math and problem-solving skills. It opens up that right side of the brain and gets that active.”

Teens are introduced to rowing form, technique and terminology. “The Learn to Row summer program is an encouraging and supportive atmosphere for teens to try the sport without committing to a full competition season,” says CJC’s Gena Welk. Building on summer work, athletes ages 13 to 18 then have the opportunity to join the crew team in the fall for practice three to five days per week and an invitation to row in competitive regattas.

Lessons to learn from nature And how you and your child can learn them this summer By Emma Castleberry Raised in the Rockies

S

pending time in nature makes us better humans. It helps us relax, disconnect, and discover the depth of life. This summer, prioritize the following lessons for your child through the natural experiences offered by these local camps and organizations. Nature Teaches Us That We Are All Here to Give “All life on this planet is here to give and contribute, which all forms of life, save humans, do naturally and organically,” says Mark Fox, owner of M&M Equestrian Center. “Humans however operate from the ‘What’s in it for me?’ mindset, the root and cause of most of our problems here. Animals and nature show us how to stop operating from this mindset.” M&M offers six weeks of summer camp for kids this summer, as well as RV camping for families and adults on the M&M property. The horse boarding facility has goats, a mini donkey and a mini horse for visitors to interact with and learn presence and grace.

NATURE TEACHES US THAT WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PLANET “Understanding and appreciating nature fosters a sense of responsibility for environmental conservation,” says Jennifer Quermann, director of communications and marketing at Butterfly Pavilion. “Programs like Butterfly Pavilion’s Outreach Programs play a crucial role in bringing awareness to the importance of invertebrates and the ecosystems they inhabit.” The multitude of outreach programs at Butterfly Pavilion teach an important conservation lesson to children and adults, creating a meaningful connection with nature and its inhabitants to encourage stewardship and responsible behavior. This summer’s calendar includes adult classes such as Beginner Macro Photography and Adult Nature Journaling. Rosie’s Discovery Summer Camp at Butterfly Pavilion includes a variety of themed camps with a nature focus for children between 5 and 12 years old. Butterfly Pavilion also offers family workshops so children and adults can learn alongside each other! Summer 2024

Engaging in nature-based activities is not only fun for all ages, but it’s also proven to have abundant health benefits. “There is a growing body of research that shows that spending time outdoors helps people thrive physically, emotionally, and mentally, to name a few of the benefits,” says Carrie Riesberg, marketing manager for Thorne Nature Experience. Thorne offers nature-based Summer Camps for children ages 5 to 15 in Boulder, Lafayette, and at its new Longmont location. There is also a summer session of Thorne Nature Preschool in Lafayette and Boulder for children ages 3 to 5 and a variety of

opportunities for youth of all ages through Nature Kids/Jóvenes de la Naturaleza (NKJN). In June, Thorne will be opening the Lafayette Nature Center. “The center will include a nature programming space, a nature play area, a community gathering space, and Thorne’s offices,” says Riesberg. “Our center is designed to get kids outside to experience nature rather than having them come inside to learn about nature through exhibits.” NATURE TEACHES US HOW TO USE ALL OF OUR SENSES “Providing children with opportunities to immerse themselves in nature allows them to love nature in tangible ways,” says Flagstaff Academy teacher and greenhouse manager

Allison Cole (affectionately referred to as Farmer Cole). “Kids form relationships and remember places, living things, and positive experiences through their senses of touch, smell and taste.” Flagstaff Academy’s Summer Camp Program offers abundant experience in the school’s outdoor organic learning garden and greenhouse classroom, as well as naturebased field trips like crawdad fishing at Left Hand Creek and hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. In addition to a traditional summer camp, Flagstaff Academy also offers weekly half-day specialty camps with themes such as gardening, outdoor adventures, yard art, and survivalist skills.

Katie Adamson Conservation Fund

A synergistic approach to wildlife protection and community sustainability

I

n Colorado, an organization rises above traditional wildlife conservation methods, blending education, community development, and innovative technologies to protect endangered species. The Katie Adamson Conservation Fund, established in 2014, honors the legacy of Katie Adamson, a conservation ally who lost her battle with cancer. Led by Zookeeper Dave Johnson, the fund has since embarked on a global mission intertwining wildlife protection with cultural compassion. Unlike conventional conservation groups, the Katie Adamson Conservation Fund adopts a multifaceted strategy. Its core mission is the protection of endangered species, but the approach is far-reaching and inclusive. The organization leverages youth education, community sustainability projects, and even virtual reality technology to create an immersive educational experience. Moreover, it facilitates career development for individuals

(Photo: The Katie Adamson Conservation Fund). passionate about conserving the species at the heart of the fund's mission. This Denver-based community conservation group is more than a collection of wildlife enthusiasts; it's a melting pot of various ages and mindsets united by a singular goal – to leave the world better than they found it. The species sharing our planet not only deserve protection but also the dedication and voice that the Katie Adamson Conservation Fund tirelessly provides. In the words of Katie Adamson, the fund embodies the spirit of making the

world a better place. The fund's activities are as diverse as its approach. From educational programs in schools to building beehive fences to protect gardens from elephants, the organization's efforts are as unique as they are impactful. Training local communities in sustainable practices to reduce poaching, organizing speaker presentations and fundraisers, and even embarking on physical challenges like mountain climbing and races, the fund leaves no stone unturned in its quest for conservation.

A critical aspect of the Katie Adamson Conservation Fund's work is its focus on "conservation karma," a belief that positive actions towards wildlife and the environment can reverberate globally. By advocating for coexistence and respect for all species, the fund emphasizes the interconnectedness of all life forms. The Katie Adamson Conservation Fund stands out in the realm of wildlife conservation. Its approach goes beyond mere preservation; it's about creating a harmonious balance between humans and wildlife, ensuring a sustainable future for both. As the organization continues to grow and expand its influence, it holds true to the belief that every species matters and no journey is too far in the pursuit of conservation. The echo of their unified voices continues to spread, from shore to mountain peak, in a relentless effort to make a lasting difference in the world. How to have good oral health while camping or away at camp By Linda Thorsen Bond Raised in the Rockies

W

e reached out to Samantha Graffeo Gardner at South Boulder Pediatric Dentistry for her tips on maintaining oral health this summer. Dr. Sam, as her patients call her, said maintaining good oral health is a common problem during the summer months. “I often have kids who admit they fall behind on their brushing when they're away at summer camps,” she said. “It happens all the time. Kids come for their check-up the last week of summer before school starts and we ask them how brushing has been going but we know the answer before they tell us. It's hard to remember to brush during camp, and when they’re sitting in the dental chair at the end of summer, we can tell how well they have taken care of their teeth by what we see during our exam. The best thing we can do, then, is to establish a routine that works for them before

summer starts.” Dr. Sam suggested “temptation bundling” as a good training tool. She said, “We’ve learned that bundling something you love

and do every single night, like watching TikTok or reading, with something that’s important but you don’t want to do, like toothbrushing, can be very effective. A kid makes a promise to themself that they won’t do that thing they love unless they brush their teeth first. They make it contingent on doing that. Then when they go to sleep-away camp they continue the habit.” She also recommends a foldable travel toothbrush. “If the toothbrush is an unwieldy thing and messy when it’s stuck in your child’s tote bag, they might not want to use it. A foldable one doesn’t have a second piece to lose, it’s always together, and the top covers the bristles. Sometimes they don’t floss while they’re in camp, but we tell them to at least use mouthwash.” Learn more of Dr. Sam’s tips for teaching kids to be responsible for their dental health at the new South Boulder Pediatric Dentistry opening in South Boulder in February. 805 S. ummer camp can be a chance for growth, enrichment and progress – for parents as well as kids. Sure, a kid’s trip to camp may seem like the perfect opportunity for parents to take a deep breath and relax. Why not take a load off when the little ones are away? But a child’s getaway at a sleepaway summer camp is the perfect opportunity for parents to practice self-improvement, specifically when it comes to spiffing up the homestead. We’ve assembled some ideal home improvement projects for the summer months, measures that can augment the home living experience even as they increase property values. These projects are sure to make life better for the entire family, including the kids when they return from a summer away. Home improvement projects don’t have to be epic in order to be impactful, especially if you’re the kind who specializes in do-ityourself projects. Focusing on small areas within the home is a good way to kick off

Specifically, adding a new, water-resistant floor to an entryway, bathroom or kitchen could be the perfect way to take advantage of an empty house during the summer. “If a consumer is a handy ‘do-it-yourselfer,’ redoing a small bathroom floor or entryway is a perfect away-at-camp project,” said Kelley McDonald of McDonald Carpet One. She pointed specifically to Luxury Vinyl Plank, or LVP, as an ideal option for those with a knack for installation, as well as water-resistant laminates. “One of the categories of flooring that’s been the most popular with customers is the water-resistant laminate, which is very kid and pet-friendly. It’s very stable in our dry Colorado climate, as opposed to wood, which needs humidity to perform properly.” What’s more, the option is affordable, and McDonald offers custom bard doors to match any new hardwood or laminate floors. When it comes to home improvement, the summer months offer the perfect opportunity to focus on outdoor spaces. Longmont-based Budget Home Supply offers all the tools and resources needed to make a backyard or patio the perfect place for family gatherings. Whether it’s a matter of adding a new deck, spiffing up outdoor landscaping or giving that patio a new shine, Budget Home has plenty of options. Specifically, Budget’s Vernetta Angelo points to the best materials for building a new

deck, elements that will withstand the unique pressures of a Colorado climate. “Composite wood for a deck is a great option,” Angelo said. “Composed primarily of wood fibers and recycled plastic, composite wood comes in a wide range of colors and stains, and it won’t warp, split or crack.” She also pointed to the latest trends in outdoor design, specifically “hardscaping,” which refers to any non-living elements (concrete, rocks, bricks, pavers, stone and wood). “Hardscaping is the new trend,” she said.

“When selecting hardscape products, think about the architectural style of your home, surrounding landscape, size of the project and future projects you want to complete down the road.” Finally, improving the air circulation within the home itself can make a critical difference in quality of life, no matter the time of year. The right filtration and purification system can be critical in Colorado, whether it’s during the hot months when smog, smoke and other elements are intense, or during the winter when furnaces and heating systems work extra hard. Longmont-based SAC Mechanical Heating and Air Conditioning offers a wide array of options to improve indoor air quality, measures that can make all the difference for those in the home who may have allergies, asthma or other breathing issues. “As an HVAC repair and service company, SAC Mechanical offers humidifier installation, air purification and other air quality services to homes and businesses throughout the Boulder area,” SAC states on its website. “Our goal is to improve both health and comfort at home and in the workplace, allowing Coloradans to breathe freely.” Whether it’s a new floor, a revamped backyard or an improved indoor air circulation system, all of these measures are sure to make the entire family happy and make the quality of life even better for kids returning from camp.

COMMUNITY SAILING OF COLORADO – LIL PUFFS SAILING CAMPS

For our youngest campers, these weeklong camps introduce sailing, water safety, and boating. This is a great introduction on how to have fun and be safe on the water. Sailing together as a group with the instructor and taking turns with each job in a larger Venture Keel 18 or Capri 14 sailboat, is a great way to teach the fundamentals with this age group. We understand that campers this age may not be strong swimmers so we recommend that they come feeling comfortable in and around natural water such as lakes and reservoirs, have experience and feel confident floating where they can't touch with a PFD on, and have emerging skills in kicking and paddling in an intended direction. Camp Dates: June 3-5, June 10-14, June 17-21, June 24-28, July 1-3, July 8-12, July 15-19, July 22-26, July 29-Aug. 2, Aug. 5-9 Ages: 5 to 6 Gender: Coeducational Type: Day Camp Camp Location: Boulder Registration Deadline: Cost: $299-$499 Phone Number: (303) 757-7718 Website: communitysailing.org

COMMUNITY SAILING OF COLORADO – LIL PUFFS SAILING CAMPS

For our youngest campers, these weeklong camps introduce sailing, water safety, and boating. This is a great introduction on how to have fun and be safe on the water. Sailing together as a group with the instructor and taking turns with each job in a larger Venture Keel 18 or Capri 14 sailboat, is a great way to teach the Summer 2024

RAISED IN THE ROCKIES fundamentals with this age group. We understand that campers this age may not be strong swimmers so we recommend that they come feeling comfortable in and around natural water such as lakes and reservoirs, have experience and feel confident floating where they can't touch with a PFD on, and have emerging skills in kicking and paddling in an intended direction.

Sail Camp. At this level, campers practice capsizing and righting boats so it is required that campers have previous swimming experience. This includes the ability to swim in an intended direction while wearing a PFD for 25 meters (width of a standard pool) and being comfortable in and around natural water such as lakes and reservoirs.
