FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK We wish to call the attention of our contributors of written material to be published in the Vestnik to the new deadline on page 2, bottom of column 2. Our sincere thanks for your cooperation. The State YAD (Arts, Crafts, Science and Educational, Talent and Beseda) at Lodge Praha No. 29, Taylor, Texas, Sunday, August 17 was very well presented and well attended. It secured to be enjoyed by all and accomplished a good amount of good-will for the spisT, The youth seemed to appreciate what the Society is doing and trying to do for them. Just read their letters of thanks to the Supreme Lodge for the camping days which they enjoyed. We must remember that they are the future of our Society. It is a good idea that the Royalty will be held separately, Sunday, September 14, at Seaton since having it on the same date would surely tire the audience and also the youth very much, even though the hall was air-conditioned and comfortable. The arts, crafts, scientificeducational, talent and Beseda that your editor saw certainly speak well for our youth. We wish to congratulate

That man is the richest whose pleasures are the cheapest. It is characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things. There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root. Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify. Simplify. Rather than love, than Money, than fame, give me truth. It takes two to speak the truth — one to speak and another to hear. —Henry David Thoreau all, not only the winners, but all, for it shows that you are sportsmanlike, and will very likely try that such harder next year. Keep up the good work and remember the old motto: "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." Here is a thought: Thomas Edison had tried an invention 90 times and each time it failed. His friend told him, "I guess you'll give up now, will you not?" Mr. Edison replied, "Definitely not, I have found 90 ways that it will not work, so I'll try some

others." He was the inventor of our electric bulb, as we all know, among many other inventions, too numerous to mention. The Third Czech Spectacular at Linden Hall, Lodge 66, on August 24 was well- attended and seemed to be well accepted by the audience. The day was overcast and much cooler and, therefore, more comfortable than the previous days had been. The atmosphere of friendliness and fellowship was enjoyable to see. The performance of the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra tinder the direction of Brother Sid Pokladnik, with their wonderful presentation of many , enjoyable numbers was certainly something that we do not hear every day. The Dallas Lodge Pokruk No. 84 Choral Group with their songs, under the direction of Brother Frank Henzen were wonderful to listen to, the Beseda group of youngsters in their presentation, the West majorettes, the Sokols from Ennis, Dallas, C. Christi, and Houston in their performance, and the clear-spoken speech in Czech of Brother Kleprlik of San Antonio are all to be commended for a job well done. Last, but certainly not

least,, we must appreciate . the hard work of all the members of Lodge 66 who took part in the effort to have everyone made comfortable. The average citizen had the privilege to see the more intellectual side of the Americans of Czech descent, and we feel certain that those who were in attendance enjoyed it all, and probably learned a few facts and things that they will remember with peasant thoughts of the day. Brother Nick Morris, president of the Supreme Lodge, SPJST, acted as Master of Ceremonies and kept the program moving, and yours truly had a few words to say and we hope they were of some value to some of our listener& That these kind of ventures cost money. and are a rather risky endeavor to undertake is no secret. Linden Lodge 66 is to be commended for undertaking such a program. The cost no doubt was rather high but it was not lost, not when we can present a . better side of our heritage and our Society, then we have to admit that the profit gained by our people is greater than any financial profits we might reap. We certainly could see that the day was not one of any great monetary gain to the lodge with all the expenses it bore. We hope it was rewarding to those hard-working and dedicated, members for their efforts certainly are to be appreciated by one and all. a a It may sound that we are repeating ourselves, but it's true: dreams are made real by people who plan ahead with life insurance. A complete sound holding is the key to financial seicnudrity and guarantee of peace of m Insurance dollars work like dollars in trust. No matter how much is paid in towards the face value of the policy, in case of death the beneficiary gets the , full sum. And all the while (in life) the policy is being paid for its cash value goes up. Life insurance planning is the means by which people share the common risks of "dying too soon" or 'living too long" — dying . while loved. ones depend on our income, or outliving our span of earning years so that we become dependent on others, .as .another writer so aptly put it. When this insurance is purchased thru a fraternal, it is also endowed with a "heart" — the heart of a compoSite - minded group of people who look to each other in the sense of "brothers" and strive for e a brotherhood community.

Wednesday, September 3, 1969 That is why invariably the organs of the fraternals set high examples of charity, the love of country, the importance of home and family as the core of the strength of American free society. At the same time emphasis is placed on independence, resourcefulness, self-reliance. The fraternals are proud of the fact they take care of their own. The SPJST certainly is such a fraternal society which practices all of the above mentioned with its rest homes and enthusiastic youth program, etc. The fraternals have a wonderful future if all the members work together. The proud past then can evolve into a greater future.

Capt. Joe Bush, Jr., of Temple was killed February 10 at Moung Soni, Laos, as he single-handedly defended an American compound against 20 North Vietnamese commandos after his sergeant was seriously wounded. For this he won a Silver Star Medal and Purple Heart. The Silver Star and Purple Heart, plus a Bronze Star Medal with V device for valor, were posthumously presented to Capt. Bush's wife during

the North Vietnamese commandos, the citation accompanying his medal said. Capt. Bush realized only he and the sergeant were adequately armed to defend other Americans in the compound who had no p rotective cover as the North Vietnamese at tacked the camp with grenades, small arms, machine guns, .satchel charges and B-40 rockets. He quickly established a defensive position in Hie compound from which he could supress enemy fire. Both men tossed grenades at the enemy and covered each other as they attempted to reach that position. The sergeant was injured. Capt. Bush charged the enemy raiders by himself, killing two enemy soldiers as he advanced. It was during his assault that he was mortally wounded. But the sergeant was able to escape while Capt. Bush drew fire away from him and the other Americans. On the night of Dec. 31, 1968, the captain volunteered as the night aerial artillery observer when the scheduled observer bonne ill. The Bronze Star was the result. When Capt. Bush's aircraft went up the enemy opened up on him with intense antiaircraft fire. Yet, he remained aloft for two and a half hours — directing artillery fire on enemy targets and antiaircraft locations. Capt. Bush was a member of SPJST Lodge No. 47, Seaton. It is our sincere, heartfelt and fraternal wish, with this letter, to thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts who attended the funeral, tool: such sincere interest in our well-being, helped in so many ways and extended your sympathy to us on that unexpected day of August 15, 1969, when the light of life died forever and the heart

According to the provisions of Art. 131 of our SPJST By-Laws, this is official notification that a meeting will be held to consider and vote on this proposed merger. The meeting will be held Monday, Sept. 8th, at 7:30 p.m., in the William Temple Foundation Hall 427 Market, Galveston. Our lodge's regular meeting falls on

President Morris reported that on the first six months of premium refund checks there was a large blank space between the dollar sign and the figures but that this has been corrected by the computer printing asterisks in the blank space on the check. Recessed fur lunch at 11:45 a. m. Re-convened at 1:25 p. m. Architect Charles Voelter was present in the meeting to submit the plans and the estimate of the cost of the building. Architect Voelter displayed the plans and explained same in detail, and the estimated cost of the building as per specifications was $535,000.00. He suggested the following alternate bids to bring the cost of the building down: use carpeting instead of terrazo and re-plan the plaza in front of the building, use acoustical ceiling instead of decorative plaster ceiling, use plain glass instead of bronze glass, and to use plaster instead of the white pre-cast rock on the outside of the building above and below the windows. It was decided to authorize the Supreme Lodge officers to work out any other reasonable alternatives with Mr. Voelter. It was decided to have the bid opening at 1 p. in. on Oct. 8th in the First National, Bank Director's Room. The bids are to be addressed to Nick A. Morris, President, Supreme Lodge SPJST, and the envelope should be marked "Sealed Bids", or the bidders may bring the bids in person. It was decided that when the construction of the building is started the SPJST will have a sign constructed on the site. It was agreed to authorize Mr. Charles Voelter to advertise for bids on the new SPJST building, based on the specifications presented in the meeting. Vice-President Hejny reported that he contacted Bill Barnes of the Steck Company concerning the furnishing and interior decoration of the new building. It was agreed to work with a Steck Company representative and make a report to the body in the October meeting. It was agreed for the Supreme Lodge officers to work with the architect on the selection of color schemes, materials, fabrics, furniture, and fixtures for the new building. A question came up whether or not the Society would sell any of the lots which will not be used for our building.

lit81".'NtK The board reaffirmed the action of the July meeting concerning the sale of lots which will not be used by the Society. President Morris urged all directors to attend as many fUnctions in their districts as possible, especially district meetings and the State Youth Achievement Day. President Morris commented on the tragic conditions in Czechoslovakia, this being Au g ust 21st. Vice-President Hejny stated that he 'had nothing else to report, except to convey thanks from Sister Hejny for all that has been done for her during her illness. He reported that she was improving. Director Kubena stated that he had nothing to report, but that he admired the architect's rendition of the new building and that he thought it was beautiful. He further stated that he enjoyed the association with the members of the board. Director Sraila had nothing to report, but said that we made a lot of progress in this meeting. Director Vitek had nothing to report and he thanked President Morris for the ride to Corpus Christi to the Holasek funeral. Director Koliha apologized for being late for the meeting and explained that he had car trouble. Director Broz stated that we have made the second hurdle, that we are Progressing nicely, and he enjoyed the meeting. Director Hanka stated that he was glad we got our differences with the Insurance Department corrected. He further stated that he expected the estimated cost of our building to be much higher than it actually is. He also reported on the progress of the rest home in Needville. Director Pokladnik said that he enjoyed the meeting. Director Pokladnik complimented President Morris and Director Koliha on their performance in conducting the funeral services for Sister Betty Holasek. President Morris reminded the directors that we would meet for 2 days in October, the session to start at 9 a. m. Oct. 8, 1968. We were sorry our youth leader, Mrs. Mary Shenburn and her family were on vacation and missed the party, but believe it or not, youth leaders get vacations, too. Congratulations to all the winners at State YAD, especially to Carolyn Veselka and Randy Havran from Lodge 142 in District V. On Saturday night, August 23, we attended a Back-to-School Dance at New Tabor Hall. It was sponsored by the New Tabor Youth Club. We want to thank them for inviting us. Everyone had a nice time. Dear Readers, My, how time does fl y ! I want to thank everyone in our lodge and youth club for the nice reception they gave me at our last meeting for doing' such a good job as youth leader the past two years. I said then and I say again, I slid not bring all of the honors to our club myself. It was the children and most of all the parents who backed their children. I want to ask the parents to support Judy Shenkir and Mary Fisher as much as you supported me. They need you. The cake and ice cream you served, ladies, was delicious. I enjoyed seeing and talking to so many of my SP friends at the state meeting in Taylor and am looking forward to seeing a lot more at our Royalty meet. Congratulations to all the state winners, you all deserved the honor. Oh, yes, congratulations to Bro. and Sis. James Janousek on their new arrival. In West for this past sum mer we had a total of 57 days of 100 degree weather or better. With the end of summer comes the end of all the youth club's summer activities. I hope that all the youngsters who participated in our activities enjoyed them as much as I have this summer. Now we need to start planning for fall activities. Let me remind all the club members and friends that the next youth club meeting will be held this Sunday, Sept. 7, at 3 p.m.. On this day the adults will have

Part of our destination was reached as we pulled into Holiday Beach, and stopped to collect three more people, one youth and two adults, Mr, and Mrs. -James. We were able to change our clothes and manuver a few last minute preparations at We James' trailer house. Before we reached what was our seemingly sole destination, we stopped and toured a- wildlife museum aquarium. There were- many interesting fish and facts viewed by the youth. Finally, at about a quarter 'til eleven, we reached Rockport Beach, and that table, that would be ours for the day. Much slamming of car doors and shouts of joy were silenced as there was a "Rise in the Water", and quite an enormous splash! Later, somewhere around three in the afternoon, after a day of swimming, eating, resting, and more swimming, we all piled back into cars and went sightseeing. We saw many, many beautiful homes in the residential sections, such as Key Allegro. Then we viewed historical places, like, "The Fulton Mansion" and some old Spanish buildings, and later the famed "Big Tree". After stopping for sodas we returned to the trailer house for supper. Items of Interest IIAJEK'S VISIT IN WASHINGTON AND CANADA Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Hajek of Seymour have recently returned from a wonderful threeweek trip to Washington and Canada. The Hajeks flew to Seattle where they visited with their daughter and her husband, Arlene and Larry DeYoung and with Larry's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Milford DeYoung. While in the Seattle area, they did a great deal of sightseeing. They toured Seattle's harbor, Todd's Ship Building Yard, the beautiful Snoqualmie Forest and Falls, which are taller than Niagara Falls, the majestic snowcapped Mt. Rainier and Whidbey Island. They also toured the Olympic Peninsula, visiting scenic Hurricane Ridge, the Victorian Homes in Port Townsend, and the lumber mills of Port Angeles. The Hajeks were accompanied by Arlene and Larry on their trip to Vancouver and Victoria, B. C., Canada where they visited the famous Stanley Park, the beautiful sunken gardens in. Queen Elizabeth's Park, and the Lions Gate Suspension Bridge in Vancouver. In Victoria they visited the "worldfamous" Butchart Gardens, the ornate Parliament Building, Undersea Gardens, and the Wooded Wonderland. The temperature in Seattle and Cannada averaged in the high 60's and low 70's during their visit, which made the trip even more enjoyable. David also spent several days visiting in Washington but flew home earlier, while his parents remained for

a more extended visit. Larry is in the banking business, and Arlene will be teaching in the business department at Bothell Senior High School in Washington this fall. The Hajeks are all members of Lodge 73, Seymour, Texas and Jesse is an organizer of that lodge. SP.TST-

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE F.B.I. With the beginning of the new academic year, it is disturbing to know that a primary concern of many college and university administrators will not be the scholastic achievement of students but rather how to prevent the seizure and wreckage of educational institutions by would-be insurrectionists. The decrease in campus disorders during the summer months must not be misconstrued. Just as soon as the firebrands can muster a caucus of dissidents, we will witness a continuation of the senseless plunder which caused more than $3 million of damage to colleges and universities last academic year. Between September 1968 and April 1969, one major university alone suffered damage in excess of $1 million. Some 4,000 arrests were made in connection with violent demonstrations, untold numbers of people were injured, and at least two deaths resulted from campus riots. Certainly, criminal statistics reflect no credit on the academic community. However, unless college and university authorities take positive action to control campus violence, it will not subside in the coming months. The split in the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) ranks during the socalled national convention in Chicago last June resulted in the election of two slates of national officers. The expelled pro-Peking Progressive Labor Party wing set up its own SDS organization. Thus, opposing forces, each claiming to represent the true SDS, will clash on campuses throughout the country for controlling power. Since clamor and agitation are proven techniques for attracting new members and support, violent disruptions will come as no surprise. Although the SDS convention in Chicago was, organizationally, a fiasco, the feuding factions did not for a moment lose sight of their joint objective. Their goal is the destruction of "U.S. Imperialism" and the achievement of a classless society. The SDS considers the rebellious youth of our country as part of an "inA

WedrieSday, beptenibei 3, 1969 ternational liberation army." It regards young people, mainly college students, as a means by which the revolution can be accomplished becaase "in general, young people have less at stake in a society . . are more open to new ideas . . and are, therefore, more able and willing to move in a revolutionary direction." The issues are now clear. Time and the internal wrangling of the SDS organization have brought one basic and important truth to the surface. The youthful idealism of "participatory democracy„" so frequently espoused by SDS while striving for student approval, has been cast aside. SDS now calls for outright revolution. Inasmuch as breaking the law is a customary part of revolutionary tactics, many enforcement agencies will become involved in campus strife. In most instances, the nature and degree of involvement will depend on whether school authorities desire to protect their institutions and the rights of the majority of students who would rat'ier study than riot, or forsake their responsibilities and give in to mob rule. J. Edgar Hoover, Director SP./ST--

A PROBLEM OF OUR NATIONAL SOCIETY Father probably will leave dependent children when he dies; latest statistics still show that women live longer than men. Minnie Bell, Extension" specialist for aging, explains that loss of a father and widowhood still remain a social problem. Age is tre determining factor, she explains. A husband probably will outlive . his wife if she is five years older than ha. But if they are the same age, the wife has a 64 per cent chance of becoming a widow. If parents are both years old, a new baby has a three per cent chance of becoming a maternal orphan and a five per cent chance of becoming a paternal, orphan before he reaches 13 years of age.

V/ESTNtE GLASS SHINGLES Glass, no longer a limited-use material in the building construction industry, now forms a new product -ceramic shingles. One of the leading glass manufacturers has introduced and is testing currently traditionally shaped shingles of foamed glass, reports Jane Berry, Extension housing specialist who works with Texas A&M University. Because of the extreme durability pf the new formed glass shingles when handled and installed properly, the manufacturer offers a 30-year guarantee. The glass provides good insulation, will not deteriorate in the sun and extreme heat, is unharmed by freezing and thawing, and resists fire, the manufacturer reports. Color is an integral part of the roamed eramic, so there is no fading of discoloration even in continuous sunlight, Mrs. Berry adds. The shingles cast heaVy shadow lines much like those on a heavy weight wood shake roof and they appear heavy. But the cellular glass is light weight and easy to handle and install. The wedge-shapped shingles are five inches deep and nine inches wide. Tapered ends are laminated to asphalt sealing strips. They are attached with nails like conventional asphalt shingles.
