carving, and his Coors Regular beer. Family was always Danny’s number one priority. He loved being with his wife, kids and grandkids. He cherished the time with his brothers and sisters. His quick wit, humor, temper, and candid commentary was always on display, ready, and enjoyed. He loved planning and attending family gatherings bringing together his 13 grandkids and his extended family from all over. He always wanted to start planning the next family event as soon as possible. A visit to Grandpa and Grandma’s house meant learning how to mow with the riding lawn mower, riding horses, fishing, Gator rides and/or just sitting in the shade outside and telling stories of past projects, coon hunting, antiquing, sports, Christmases past, panthers, horses, and grandkids. He and Nancy brought this love on Christmas day traveling to each of their kid’s homes to celebrate the special day with their families. No conversation ended without a hug and an “I love you!” and “Be sure to call when you get home!” Preceding him in death were his parents Warren and Nadine Boyd; in-laws, Victor

and Mildred Lockwood; four month old son, Joshua Dan in 1970; brother, Warren Lee Boyd; and sister, Louellen Eastin. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Boyd of Leon; children, Johnny and wife, Lisa Boyd of Waukee, Iowa, Tabatha and husband, Brett Carney of Ames, Iowa, Matt and wife, Michelle Boyd of Indianola, Iowa, and Nicci and husband, Joey Gregg of Leon, Iowa; grandchildren, Johnny’s Kennedy, Meridan, and Ben, Tabatha’s Brycen, Tyler, and Mackenzie, Matthew’s Sadie, Ansley, and Lyndon, and Nicolle’s Ashton, Kaylee, Ledger, and Tucker; sister, Janet and husband, Wayne Richman of Leon; brother, Terry and wife, Jeanne Boyd of Leon; brother-in-law, Larry Eastin of Leon; sister-in-law, Cindy Boyd of Decatur, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many, many friends. Danny’s legacy is a strong family of love and connection. If you look closely and listen well, you will hear and see Danny in the voices and faces of his kids and grandkids. Thoughts from a wondering mind... Written by Lorna (Toney) Noecker Many things have changed during our lifetime. There have been a lot of steps forward. And in other respects a lot of steps backwards. How many of you get more than a little bit nostalgic when thinking about the Leon that we knew growing up? There were so many hometown businesses that we had a choice of where we wanted to shop. Need groceries? Go to Hyde’s, Epperly’s, Rippey’s or Pyfer’s. Drugstore needs? Hopkins Rexall Drug in one block and Workman Drug in the next. Clothing and household needs? Graham’s north of the square and JC Penney south side of the square. Need a haircut? You could choose from several barbers and beauticians. New car? Hansell Chevrolet, Estes Ford Motor Company, Crouse Chrysler/Dodge and also a Studebaker dealer. Need insurance on that car? Go to Hullingers, Millers or

Whites. A place to worship? Choice of many: Lutheran, Catholic, Methodist, Brethren, Christian, Assembly of God, Church of Christ, Presbyterian, Mennonite (and I think I have forgotten a few). Low on gasoline? Stop at your local Skelly, DX or Phillips 66 station or head out north of town to Hanaco. (I think there may have been a little station at the east edge of town also). People even had a choice of funeral homes: Stewart’s and Slade’s. Not feeling well? The Doss Clinic or Dr. Kenneth Brown (he made house calls. Toothache? There were two dentists, Doc Hines and Doc Scott. Legal problems? There were a half dozen lawyers. Dry cleaners? Lula McVey or Jack Cross. Other businesses included Heller/Newman Hardware, Ben Franklin Five and Dime, Long’s Men’s store, Larson’s Creamery, Long’s TV repair, Tingley Hatchery, Walt Smith Skelgas, Fuller Plumbing, Western

Auto, Eckerman’s Jewelry, Stewart’s Furniture, Boswell’s Cafe, E&M Cafe, the Cardinal Cafe, Hanthorn’s flower shop, Leon Journal-Reporter...and I am sure you can think of many more. I don’t remember how many bars were in town...but now there is one! Jefferson Bus Lines served our community and several trains passed through on a daily basis. Both are now gone. Not many of these businesses have survived. As our country became more mobile, people began flocking to the larger towns and cities to shop and this began the demise of small towns such as ours. As businesses failed, our population dwindled. Remember the sign that used to be at the four corners that declared we were “Leon, Crossroads of Southern Iowa, Home of 2,509 friendly people”? I think the current population is somewhere around 1800. Entertainment in the 50’s? Hanaco roller rink and cafe was a hot spot! (Met my first boyfriend there). Church and 4-H skating parties were often held there. The summertime found the old Leon Swimming pool crowded to capacity. (I was sad to see it go and the new pool being built in a different location). I spent many hours at our beautiful Carnegie Library and won several summer reading contests. Sada Stout was so very kind and encouraging to me. The library is still

3

in use today. Slumber parties and staying all night at friend’s houses were frequent good times. Lots of games of hide and seek and “Chalk the Rabbit” were played on those nights. Of course the guys could go to the pool hall and eventually there was a little three lane bowling alley downstairs north of the bank. So sad that many of our buildings are gone due to neglect and cost of maintenance. I do admire those people that have been able to stay in business such as The Leon Journal-Reporter and I am happy that we still have our school system, medical clinic and hospital. And we have several entrepreneurs operating a coffee shop, ice cream parlor, tattoo parlor, fitness center and a Mexican restaurant. Little River Lake has been a great addition to our community. Not only has it been a great improvement to that old Leon drinking water, but provides much needed recreation. The lake along with the walking trail, Leon Golf and Country Club, SCIT movie theatre and Central Decatur school activities provide the social life for locals. So we have seen a lot of change...some good...some not so good, but we still have our memories of a simpler time. And I think we were in a pretty good place to be teenagers in the 50s. Appreciate you for listening to the ramblings of my mind.

Grand River

MELINDA MACKEY Friday I was let out of work early, so I took my walk a little earlier than usual and ran into a few people. At the cemetery, I ran into some family of George and Zettie Bryant. They had traveled quite a ways to visit the Grand River Cemetery, and I think we both caught each other off guard. But it was a good visit and always nice to hear stories about years past and families in Grand River. So here’s just a little I pulled from the Gen website on the Bryant family: George L. Bryant was born Mar. 23, 1883. Zettie McDowell was born June 5, 1886. They were married April 7, 1903, in Leon, Iowa. To this union eleven children were born. There were 45 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. They lived most of their married life in and around Grand River with the exception of six years on a farm near Harold, South Dakota, in 19091915. Besides farming, they owned the stockyards in Grand River; and George bought and sold hogs in a four county area: Clarke, Union, Ringgold and Decatur, shipping by rail and later by truck to Chicago and St. Joseph. He was president of the telephone company in Grand

River from 1940 until his death. He was also mayor of Grand River for several years. Lunch at the GRCC will be Fri, July 12th fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, cake and ice cream. On Tues, July 16th it will be maid rites, baked beans, potato salad and rhubarb upside down cake. Call 773-5436 if you would like to order and if you have any news please call 641-344-9586. Have a great week!

MARGARET GIBSON Hope everyone had a fun Fourth of July! Well, the Bergman Carpenter Bluegrass Jamboree celebrated event number 20 on Saturday evening. The rainy spring weather set the mowing way behind and Liz needed a little extra help to get the grass under control, so thanks to all the help from Doug Carpenter, Matt Dixon, Bryan Craig, and Laurie Carpenter for getting the pond area all mowed up and ready for the music and everyone else that pitched in to make the event happen. The weather and setting were perfect! Everyone that attended had a lovely evening listening to music, visiting, and watching fireworks. The plan is to do it again next year! Sunday, June 30, Philinda Snethen took her grandson Kyle Booth to the senior

high camp at Guthrie Grove. He returned the following Saturday. Report is he had a great time! Monday morning Optimist Club members Philinda Snethen and Liz Carpenter took a load of cans to Corydon to the Can Due Redemption Center. Little Benson Parkhurst has been teething this week and has cut another tooth. He has also started crawling and is pulling up to everything. He visited Grandma Traci Tuesday. Looks like we have another traveling man in the neighborhood! Monday evening Liz Carpenter helped Deb Silver with horseback riding lessons. Tuesday morning Liz Carpenter joined Linda Perkins and Holly Howell at North Park to watch some of the Lamoni Middle School girls’ softball game and some of the Lamoni Middle School boys’ baseball game. Fun to watch their students play! Tuesday Liz Carpenter traveled to Clarinda, Iowa, to meet up with Jeanine Bradley and return a Whiz Bang Chicken Plucker machine to Tim Inman at Randolph, Iowa. When they returned to Clarinda, they met up with Jim Bradley and enjoyed visiting while eating supper at a Mexican restaurant. Lots of family time for the Osborn family this past week. Wednesday Gary and Sandy Osborn attended the Leon rodeo to watch grandson Coy in the mutton busting competition. No report on how he came out but he did have fun! Friday night Cotton and Coy Osborn stayed all night with Gary and Sandy Osborn and the littlest brother Cole stayed 1/2 the night. Saturday Chad, Haylie, and Cole came and spent the day with Gary and Sandy and Cotton and Coy. Sunday Chad, Cotton, Coy, and Cole spent the day with Gary and Sandy. Liz Carpenter had another fun farm adventure Wednesday evening when she traveled to Eagleville to pick up nine piglets to bring home to the farm to raise. Let’s just say Liz really needed to take a shower after that adventure. The pigs, however, got to play in the mudhole. July 4th Philinda Snethen hosted a lunch and parade watching party at her house in Lamoni. Great location for a parade! Those in attendance were Ruthie Welch, Teeny Gibson, Grant Gibson, Mary Ellen and Gary Silver, Harold Green, Liz Carpenter, Doug Carpenter, Kay Herring, Carl Evans, Amy and Carissa McBirnie, Penny Worthington, Jeffrey Thomas, Stuart and Deb Silver, Melissa Silver, Nathan Silver, Lindsey Barney, Ruby Smith and her son Garrett Smith, Lisa Kolb, William Kolb, Hannah Kolb, and Ann Stous. They enjoyed a very tasty lunch of tacos and hotdogs and all the fixins and then enjoyed watching the parade go by. For the 4th, Holly, Dylan, and Benson Parkhurst went to Tanner and Tessa Bowen’s for a barbecue and fireworks display. Then Friday they visited Grandma DeLila and Grandma Nicky for a barbecue and fireworks display with cousins Daxon and Kayson. Saturday they all went to Cousin Amanda Young’s house for a fish fry. Holly reports it was nice to see the Parkhurst family. It’s

a good thing we have holidays because they bring families together! Guests of Liz Carpenter over the weekend were Doug Carpenter, Jimmie Carpenter, Tom and Brett Manning, Jerry Bergman, Tom Bergman, Burt and Wendy Beardsley from Tucson, Arizona, Jay, Lisa, and Annabelle Carpenter from Sacramento, and Laurie Carpenter and her dog, Steel. Have a good week, be kind to each other, and now we all can start planning our Labor Day weekend events. Sounds like a good camping trip is in order. (No, you cannot start working on Halloween plans, yet.)

Cardinals Soar Past Eagles

Carleigh O’Dell utilized her wheels stealing second and advancing to third base before finishing the diamond on a wild pitch against I-35. O’Dell leads the team with stolen bases earning 21 so far this season with a perfect record.

Perfect 2-0 Week for the Cardinals The Cardinals hosted the I-35 Roadrunners last Monday, July 1 winning the battle 6-2. The Cardinals traveled to Chariton on Wednesday but Mother Nature’s lightning storm canceled the game that was already re-scheduled from earlier in the season. The Cardinals ended their regular season with a 14-13 record after beating the East Union Eagles again 10-1 on Friday, July 5. The beginning of the game against the Roadrunners didn’t start out the best with the first at bat reaching first on balls. The second at bat reached first on a Cardinal error while the Roadrunners reached home on a couple Cardinal errors. After re-grouping, the first out was made on a throw down from Maizee Lindsey as catcher with a nice tag by Carlee Hamilton at second. Kylee Rockhold on the mound took charge of the next two outs sending the batters back to the dug out. The Cardinals answered back with a run of their own to tie the game 1-1. On one out, Hamilton smacked a ball through the right side of the field earning a single reaching second on the error by the right fielder. Rockhold earned a single scoring Hamilton. Jordan Proctor was substituted in as courtesy runner for Rockhold. Riley Bell and Eily Hall were disappointed at the plate

ending the inning. The next two innings, the Cardinals went three up three down. In the second inning, Rockhold took charge fielding the first hit and making the successful throw to first before striking out the next two batters. During the third inning, Emily Cornell had a strong glove catching back to back fly balls before Hall had a shoestring catch. During the second inning, the Cardinal bats made some noise taking the lead adding 2 more runs. Alaina Applegate started the rally with a hard double to center field. On one out, Mya Applegate reached first on an error by the short stop, while advancing A. Applegate to third. While Carleigh O’Dell was up to bat, M. Applegate easily reached second on the steal with A. Applegate on third. On two outs, Lindsey drove the ball to the right side of second earning a base hit while scoring the Applegate sisters. Hamilton was able to get the bat on the ball but was unable to beat out the throw. Cardinals were ahead 3-1. In the third inning, Rockhold lead off smacking a ball to the right side of second for a single. Proctor in to run for Rockhold reached second on the sacrifice bunt by Bell. Hall and A. Applegate both hit the ball hard but were stripped of the hit when the right fielder caught both

balls. The Roadrunners were able to take advantage of another couple Cardinal errors in the fourth inning with the lead off batter earning first on an error then advancing around the diamond to score on another Cardinal error. With one on base, Rockhold was able to earn the first out with a strike out followed by A. Applegate catching the fly ball for the second out before Hall made the play and throw to first for the third out. The Cardinal bats were able to make some noise scoring another 2 runs. Cornell lead off with a single through the left side of the field. M. Applegate reached first on balls. On one out, Lindsey loaded up the bases on a single to right field. Hamilton followed the lead hitting nearly the same spot Lindsey did earning a single with the hit that landed on the right field baseline, then reached second base while scoring 2 runs. Rockhold and Bell were able to both get the bat on the ball but were disappointed with the catch in right field and center field, respectively. The Cardinals held the 5-2 lead after the fourth inning. The Cardinal defense continued strong allowing only three at bats for the final three innings. In the fifth inning, Rockhold record-

ning. On offense, the Cardinals had lost the momentum and were unable to answer back with any more runs, losing the game, 8-12. D. Albia The Cardinals lost a nail biter 7-8 game against Albia. Hill lead the bats with a double and 2 singles. D. Adams followed with 2 hits along with Fallis, Walker and Hullinger with 1 a piece. RSVP Receives Funding Southern Iowa RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) received funding for the 2020 grant cycle from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Southern Iowa RSVP volunteers serve in a variety of community volunteer positions in four counties in southern Iowa; Decatur, Ringgold, Union and Clarke. Southern Iowa RSVP is sponsored by Graceland University. Kelly Everett said on behalf of Graceland University “As the Vice President for Institutional Advancement which includes the RSVP program, we are thrilled to receive the continuation Grant so that our community members 55 and over can continue to make a difference in the lives of all of those who live in the areas we cover in Southern Iowa.” Shirley Kessel, Graceland’s authorized representative to the program, received the letter of approval and stated “We are excited about the growth of the Southern Iowa RSVP Program over the last few years.” Southern Iowa

RSVP is beginning its third year with its Program Director, Lisa Kolb, about to begin her second year with the program. “Southern Iowa RSVP has an amazing group of volunteers who serve their community with distinction. We are looking forward to seeing what this next year holds for Southern Iowa RSVP volunteers and our community.” Southern Iowa RSVP is dedicated to connecting senior and retired individuals 55 years of age and older with community organizations in Decatur, Clarke, Union and Ringgold counties in southern Iowa. These connections allow volunteers to serve as much or as little as they want in both longterm or short-term volunteer opportunities.
