Civics in Action at Readington Middle School

As the nation prepared for the Midterm Elections, Readington Middle School welcomed various local, state and federal politicians.

Hunterdon County Clerk Mary Melfi and Elections Administra tor Beth Thompson educated stu dents on how to register to vote and the importance of engaging in the democratic process.

All students were able to meet the candidates in New Jersey’s

hotly contested 7th Congressional district when both Congressman Tom Malinowski (D) and Senator Tom Kean Jr. (R) attended stu dent-centered town hall meetings.

In Civics classes, where stu dents focus on the role of citizens in their governments, students listened to presentations from As semblyman and Minority Leader John DiMaio (R) and RMS-alum Vic Komosinski, who presented a project she worked on in her AP Government and Politics class about this year’s board of educa

tion candidates. Some students visited Holland Brook to present civics-based lessons to the young er grades.

Civics students will also have the opportunity to meet NJ Gu bernatorial candidate Jack Ciat tarelli (R) as well as engage in mini lessons with Dr. Hart about civil discourse in and out of the classroom.

Finally, in the second half of the semester-long course, stu dents will move to take action by completing community ser vice projects and working with lawmakers at the local and state level to propose research-based solutions to problems facing our town, state, and nation.

Readington Resident Gives Back

Stevenson Family Offers Blue Christmas

As a gift to the congregation and the community of Stanton and surrounding area, the Ste venson Family will be providing a Blue Christmas service at Stan ton Reformed Church, 1 Stanton Mountain Rd., Stanton, on Mon day, Dec. 12, at 5 p.m.

Sara Stevenson D’Sa grew up in Readington Township and cur rently lives in Stirling with her husband and two children. She is a professional violinist who is actively performing in several or chestras in the tri-state area and many private events.

Claudia Jaeger of Readington, a real estate agent with Keller Williams Elite, endeavors to give back to first responders in the lo cal community. On Dec. 6 she will host a luncheon for the Read ington Police Department and make a donation.

Every year Claudia selects a different police and military or ganization and donates a portion of her income to be used for po lice and military safety resources. First responders are close to her heart as her husband recently re tired from both law enforcement and 28 years of service in the Army National Guard. This year’s military portion will be donated to the Essex Troop of West Orange.

As Christmas approaches and the commercialization of the sea son is all around us, we need a time when we can, with others, acknowledge the “blue” feelings we have at Christmas time. For many who have lost a loved one, this is a time of sharp loneliness. For others, who have lost a rela tionship, health, a job, or had a financial setback it may be a time of pain, confusion, or fear.

The candles of love, peace, light, and hope will be lit inter spersed with beautiful, meditative music of the season performed by the Stevenson Family.

The Stevensons have lived in Readington Township for 24 years. Peter Stevenson teaches music at Hunterdon Central Re gional High School. Julie Ste venson has taught piano lessons for 42 years. Together, Julie and Peter serve as ministers of music at both Whitehouse United Meth odist Church and the First Pres byterian Church of Washington, sharing their gifts of choral and keyboard music.

Philip Stevenson also grew up in Readington Township and serves as pianist, organist, and violinist at the Stanton Reformed Church in addition to his full time job as Senior Business Analyst at Oticon. He lives in Hopewell with his partner and adorable kitty.

Join us for a meaningful, peaceful evening followed by an opportunity for fellowship with appetizers and mulled cider in the Fellowship Hall.

Hunterdon County Commis sioner Board Deputy Director Zach Rich announced at the Nov. 1 meeting at the Historic Hunterdon County Courthouse that the county will be investing in the rehabilita tion of Deer Path Park.

Rich, liaison to the Division of Parks and Recreation, said, “What is especially important to me about the Deer Path Park upgrade, is that the County Park system will be installing a brand-new, universal playground that will include modi fications to make it accessible and inclusive. This playground will be designed to serve children of all abilities.”

For many years, Deer Path Park has served as the flagship of the County Park System and is home to the annual summer concert se ries and numerous recreational

activities. The new accessible playground equipment will feature ramped structure climbers, slides, play panels, free standing swings, spinners, and a music center. In ad dition to the new playground equip ment, a new pavilion will be added for a quiet space, the softball field will be made accessible, upgrades to existing walking paths will be made, and a refurbishment of bath room facilities will be completed.

Division Head of Parks and Rec reation Daniel Bush, who is helping to spearhead the Deer Path Park project noted, “Adding playground equipment that is both accessible and inclusive will allow for more Hunterdon County children to be able to enjoy our beautiful park system. I am very proud to be a part of this endeavor and appreciate the board’s support for this project.”

MERRY AND BRIGHT

Readington's 18th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting will take place on Friday, December 9th at 7:00 pm in front of the Township Municipal Building. This much anticipated event was started by Township resident Maryann Lacamera in memory of her late husband Nick.

There will be caroling under the direction of Ed Jankiewicz before the tree lighting. Cookies will be provided by Readington Girl Scouts and hot chocolate courtesy of The Rail at Readington will be served.

And there is a rumor that Santa himself, with the assistance of the Whitehouse Fire Company, might make an appearance.

Come join in the festivities to mark the beginning of the Holiday Season.

OPERATION BLUE ANGEL

The Readington Township Police Department is proud to announce a new program which allows officers quick access to residences of senior citizens and other eligible residents in the event of an emergency. The program, Operation Blue Angel, is free for eligible residents 55 years of age or older and live alone or will be alone for extended periods of time on a regular basis; or persons with a medical condition(s) that could lead to incapacitation and who live alone or are alone for extended periods of time on a regular basis; or live with another individual and meet any of the requirements.

If a resident is eligible for the program, a lockbox, which is owned and maintained by the Police Department, will be placed on the participant’s doorknob by an officer. The lockbox will contain a key to the residence (which the resident must supply). The key will only be accessed by responding officers in the event of an emergency where officers cannot gain access to the residence by traditional means. The Operation Blue Angel program lockbox will not be accessed by anyone for any other reason.

Participation is completely voluntary, free, and may be stopped or started at any time. In addition to providing emergency services access in an emergency, where seconds count, the program promotes safety and peace of mind at home.

If interested in applying for the program, applications are available at the Readington Township Police Department or accessible through the Department ’s website.

The Department would also like to remind residents of our other free programs which include: Project Medicine Drop, a drop box located in our lobby for unused medications, child seat inspections and house checks while residents are away.

Readington Renames Property in Honor of Fallen Hero

At its November 7th meeting, the Township Committee officially renamed the Whitehouse Greenway, the Lieutenant Dale Haver Whitehouse Greenway. Dale Harry Haver was a Readington native son and served his country during the Vietnam War after entering the US Army in July of 1967. Parents, Buelah and Harry, raised Dale with his twin brother, Donald, and a brother and sister, Barry and Bonnie on Old Highway 28.

Lieutenant Haver received his training to pilot helicopters at military facilities in Virginia, Texas and Alabama. He was deployed to Vietnam on November 1, 1968 to fly missions there as a pilot. His twin brother was also serving in the war. In April of 1969, Lieutenant Haver piloted a mission to rescue wounded soldiers when the engine failed. The helicopter crashed and Haver safely escaped. Upon realizing his gunner was still inside the helicopter and unconscious, he ran back to rescue his fellow soldier. While inside, the helicopter exploded, and Lieutenant Haver and others perished in service to our nation. Lieutenant Haver performed over 25 aerial missions in hostile territory. He was awarded two Air Medals, a Bronze Star and a Distinguished Flying Cross.

Lieutenant Haver was honored on Veterans Day this year at the Hunterdon County Complex on Route 12 with representatives from the Township Committee to commemorate the occasion. As Congressman Malinowski explained at the event, many of his medals had gone missing or were stolen over the years. The Congressman and his office worked to have all of the medals reissued to the family. Many of his medals and accommodations are currently on display in the Readington Municipal Building lobby display case.

In addition to Lieutenant Haver, the following Readington residents were also honored at the event for their service to our Country: Don Haver (formerly of Readington and Dale’s twin brother), Christopher D. Jaeger, Joseph Lowery, Stanley M. Mleczko, Gregory E. Owen, Robert J. Sanantonio.

Links For Lex Exceeds Goal

The second-place foursome of the first annual Links For Lex Golf Outing in cludes, from left, Mike Triano, Flemington; Kyle Radzinski, Flemington; JR Vernick, Tewksbury; and Darren Jones, Clinton. - Submitted by Linda Artale

The first annual Links For Lex Golf Outing & Dinner, held at the Stanton Ridge Country Club in Whitehouse Station on Monday, Oct. 17, raised funds well beyond the goal of $15,000 for the Iron Girl Project scholarship fund. Darren Jones of Annandale made a hole-in-one on Hole #6, but no one had the good fortune to win the free two-year lease on a 2022 Ford EcoSport that was offered by Ciocca Car and Truck Country of Flemington with the Hole In One contest on Hole #7.

Coming in as the first-place four some was Anthony Giordano, Jason Jung, Chris Migliaro and Mike Migliaro. Second place went to Mike Triano, Kyle Radz inski, JR Vernick and Darren Jones.

Iron Girl Project was specifical ly created to honor the memory of Alexea “Lex” Karpinski, an aspiring two-sport D1 athlete and Hon or Roll student in her junior year at Hunterdon Central Regional High School who passed away suddenly in November of 2020. It supports high school student athletes in their journey to create

their own legacy, one which has a positive impact on their team mates, families and communities. Alexea’s parents and IGP founders, Danielle and Mike Karpinski, wrote, “We are so proud that so many people have chosen to sup port the Iron Girl Project. This is a testament that our community values coaches and athletes. Be ing a part of a team, a sport can truly influence a student athlete on and off the field. They learn about hard work, empathy, kind ness and leadership. They will take this with them beyond their high school years.” They con tinued, “Everything that the IGP stands for is based on our daugh ter’s experience as a student ath lete.”

All proceeds raised benefit the Iron Girl Project, Inc. (IGP) scholarship fund for graduating senior athletes who demonstrate true grit, understand the value of teamwork and exhibit leadership on and off the athletic field. With several IGP fundraising events scheduled throughout the year, the goal of the organization is to award multiple scholarships to student athletes across New Jer sey. Scholarship amounts, timing and essay topics will be released via the Iron Girl Project website and social media in January 2023. The scholarships will expand and change each year based on event participation and funds raised.

For more information on the Iron Girl Project, sponsorship op portunities, and upcoming events, see irongirlproject.org or email irongirlproject@gmail.com.

Hunterdon Health Participates in Lyme Disease Vaccine Study

Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness that can cause serious long-term symptoms if untreated. For people who live in areas where ticks are common, a preventative vaccine might be bet ter than current measures like insect repellants and checking for ticks. This clinical trial will evaluate if an investigational vac cine is safe and effective for preventing Lyme disease in people 5 years and older. By choosing to volunteer, you will represent others like you – in age, race, ethnicity and from communities like yours.

Who may participate:

Healthy children (between 5 years and 17 years) old and adults (18 years of age and older) who live in places or participate in activities that increase their risk for Lyme disease. Risk factors for Lyme include:

· Outdoor occupations such as landscaping, forestry, or wild life and parks management

· Frequent outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, camp ing, fishing, hunting, or gardening

· Living in or frequently visiting wooded areas, tree lines, tall grass, open fields, lakesides, or riversides

· Owning a pet that may return from outdoors with attached ticks.

There are other requirements to participate in this study. A study team member will help determine if this study is a good fit for you.

Residents Asked to Destroy Lanternfly Egg Masses

New Jersey Department of Ag riculture Secretary Douglas Fisher is encouraging New Jersey resi dents to help take part in eliminat ing spotted lanternfly egg masses. While the adult spotted lanternflies cannot survive the freezing tem peratures, they do lay egg masses that survive the winter and then hatch in late April or early May.

“The more of these egg masses that can be destroyed now and before spring, the less of these nuisance pests there will be next year,” Secretary Fisher said.

Spotted lanternfly egg masses hold between 30-50 eggs of the invasive species. One sign to look for to see where spotted lanternfly has been is a black sooty mold on a tree. The spotted lanternfly pre fers the Tree of Heaven, which is common in New Jersey. The egg masses can be found on almost any kind of surface, including on vehicles, park benches, steps or outdoor stairways, or on the sides of buildings. The egg masses can be scraped with a credit card (or something similar). It is impor tant to press against the egg mass and hear the eggs popping as they are being scraped. The popping sound signifies the eggs are being destroyed. Scraping cards are available at the Rutgers Extension office in each county.

Since October 1, 2021, NJDA and USDA staff have scraped nearly 340,000 egg masses and treated almost 20,000 acres.

While the Spotted Lanternfly is not a threat to humans or animals, it is known to feed on numerous types of vegetation.

For homeowner and business resources, and other information about spotted lanternfly go to www.badbug.nj.gov.
