P rofile the Class Zack Doyle Being in the region that Hickory Grove-Sharon Elementary School is in, Mrs. Jones’ class is not very diverse. Both her class and the school as a whole are lacking in diversity in socioeconomic status, gender, and race. Most of the students in Mrs. Jones’ class dress “down”, with the exception of one or two students. One student has worn the same sweatshirt every day that I have been in the class. On the other hand, another student looks “dressed up” every day. Her hair is always done and I have never once seen her wear the same thing. It is evident that the first student I spoke of has financial issues in the family and the second is pretty well-off. The girls in Mrs. Jones’ class outnumber the boys thirteen to six. So the class is definitely lacking in gender diversity. Mrs. Jones’ class is also lacking in racial diversity. The majority of the class is Caucasian. There are three African-American students in the class. There are no other minorities in the class. Most of Mrs. Jones’ class is pretty bright. She said that this class is the best class she has ever had. There are five or six students in the Merit program and two students that are LD. The whole class seems to have a grasp of what they are learning. The student that touched me the most would have to be Keyurshia Johnson. Every day she greeted me and would smile at me throughout the class. She got along with everyone and taught me that no matter rich or poor, white or black, we can all be friends.

Another student that touched me was Stephanie Moore. I have a tendency to judge people by their looks. Stephanie’s clothes were stained and tattered and her hair was always a mess. She was constantly off task and was kind of the outcast of the classroom. One day she came up to me with a very graphic book about snakes. I was astounded to see that a nine-year-old girl was absolutely fascinated with it. She showed me several pictures, very excited to see my reaction. She taught me that every student is worth getting to know. She was also the only one who hugged me on my last day. The student who was not on my list of favorites was Anna Mattingly. She sat at the very front of the class and was always on task. Despite her good work effort, she got on a lot of the students’ nerves. She was the typical know-it-all. She would constantly tell her peers how to do things and would get frustrated when people did not do things her way. It was very hard for me to relate to most of the students in my class. The students taught me how to deal with people who are different from myself. It would have been interesting to be in a more diverse learning environment.
