The Jamaica Association of Vintage Artistes and Affiliates (JAVAA) has rubbished rumours that veteran singer Derrick Harriott has died.

"Unless he died three minutes ago, Derrick Harriott is not dead. I just spoke to him. Dem can kill off people inna Jamaica eh? It is fake news, they must stop it," Frankie Campbell, JAVAA chairman told Loop News.

News began circulating online Monday that Harriott, who celebrated his 81st birthday in February of this year, had died.

Harriott received the Order of Distinction from the Jamaican government in 2009.

His career as a singer started when he entered the Vere Johns Opportunity Hour. Though he was not successful as a solo act, he then joined forces with Claude Sang Jr, and they won several times. He had many number one and top five songs including 'What Can I Do',  'Fistful of Dollars', 'The Loser and Walk The Streets'.

As a producer, he worked with numerous artistes including the 'Crown Prince of Reggae' Dennis Brown.
