Welcome to the Niagara Regional Learning Centre.
The Niagara Regional Learning Centre provides free instruction for adults 18 years of age and over to improve their literacy and digital skills.
Volunteer, trained tutors work with learners to enhance their reading, writing, comprehension, numeracy, digital/computer and life skills.
All profits from the Trivia night will go toward learning materials, obtaining current materials for higher level learning, updating computer software and ensuring that our learners have all they need in order to succeed with their goals.
Niagara Regional Learning Centre was founded in 1978. Often referred to simply as The Learning Centre, we are a community-based, not-for-profit, organization dedicated to increasing literacy. The Learning Centre has a wealth of trained volunteer tutors who assist adults with reading, writing, numeracy, workplace, computer and life skills.
Niagara Regional Learning Centre assists adults 19 years of age and over to improve their literacy skills:
- Assessment to determine learners’ literacy needs
- Learner and tutor are matched based on the learners’ needs
- Trained volunteer tutors following the guidelines of Laubach Literacy Ontario
- Create a Learner Plan based on the learners’ needs
- One-to-one instruction in reading, writing, math, or G.E.D. preparation
- Instruction in Computer Basics (email and Internet use), Microsoft Word and Excel
- Workplace and Workforce literacy training
- Support for both learners and tutors
The Facts Surrounding Low Literacy…
The need for literacy and essential skills training has never been greater. 42% of adults in Canada do not have the minimum literacy skills to cope with everyday life and work.
Of those 42%, the 15% with lowest literacy levels have serious difficulty dealing with any printed material.
Low literacy skills are directly linked to poverty, poor health and high unemployment.
When our learners improve their literacy skills, their self confidence returns and their job prospects are greater. Improvement in literacy levels has a rippling effect which benefits families, employers, the local economy and society at large.

The Learning Centre offers a variety of workshops and training opportunities designed to create and maintain a well coordinated literacy system within our service area.
Our Literacy Tutors…
Work with an adult learner for a minimum of 2 hours per week using a learner plan that has been designed around skill levels and goals of the learner.

I was 19 years old and needed to graduate from high school. I had taken the GED twice before, but just couldn’t pass the math portion. My mother recommended the Niagara Regional Literacy Council. They helped me find a math tutor. I have since passed and now have my GED. The 1 to 1 individual instruction has helped keep me focused in order to pass. They also found me a tutor to help with essay writing so I could apply to university, and with that help I was accepted into my dream school.

Fund Raising
The Council raises funds through participation in Bingo sessions (City of St. Catharines) and promotion of various fundraising events.
