About the Business
Established in 2016. Eating House 1849 pays homage to Hawaii's vibrant culinary heritage, a nod to restaurateurs like Peter Fernandez who, the story goes, opened one of the first restaurants in Hawaii, called the Eating House, back in the mid-1800s, using what was available from local farmers, ranchers, foragers and fishermen. It's here that award-winning Chef Roy Yamaguchi blends these two worlds: the easy ambiance and simple flavors of a plantation town with the dynamic modernity of haute cuisine.

FOOD WAS SO ONO, definitely worth it. the employees are so kind and make your dinner experience special (CJ was thee best server, tip him extra if he serves you). the truffle risotto & medley pairs perfectly w/ the steak. and the miso butterfish j melts in your mouth. the vibe of the restaurant is great, staff are friendly & even walk you to the restroom!

Restaurant: A Roy Yamaguchi restaurant, Eating House 1849 combines local foods, cultral heritage, and culinary skill to bring Hawaii's flavors to modern cuisine.
Ambiance: Upscale local dining
Parking: Lot parking at international market place.
Service: Above expectation. Servers and hosts were happy to accomodate my party's preferences and went beyond to provide many congratulatory messages to make our night special. I would highly recommend Eating House for dining events when celebrating any momentous event.
Food:
I ordered the Build you Own Local Catch Dish with Kampachi, Steamed, Sizzling Serrano Ginger. You are able to customize your meal with the type of fish, method of preparation, and choice of sauce. Delicious all around, would reccomend.
For dessert, I got the strawberry cheesecake. It was a strawberry ice jelly on the top of a cheesecake with crust. The cheesecake was as expected, but the strawberry jelly was a bit bland, tasting mostly like ice and a hint of strawberry. I was told it was a new item so hopefully they can perfect the recipe.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Apr 26, 20241 check-in
Stopped in last night for a date night with the wifey.
We had a great time, our server was awesome, and the live music was relaxing! Those were the highs.....the feel, mood, ambience, service, and experience was awesome.
The food.........for the price.......so-so. Good food, however I guess our expectations were higher....thus feeling a little disappointed.
The burata salad....unfortunately we found we are not fans of burata.
The pork and crab pillows....expected something soft and fluffy.....tasted like so so potstickers, however I did enjoy the sauce.
The rainbow roll was good.
The Kampachi and risotto with truffle caper beurre blanc sauce......cool name but good fish dish. I again reinforced that I am not a fan of risotto, haha. Just reminds me of flavored mushy rice lol.
It was more of a 3.5* because of the highs, but unfortunately the food just didn't meet our expectations.
I'd probably come back to try other dishes.Helpful 4Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 1 - Apr 19, 20241 check-in
This is only my second time visiting the Waikiki area, so yes, I still consider myself a tourista woohoo! I've never been to the OG Roy's Waikiki, but I've always wanted to go. I've heard so much about Roy Yamaguchi and his expansion of various restaurants as well. While this restaurant is at the International Market Place, and other places here were booked. I yelped this Eating House 1849 restaurant not knowing it was Roy owned, so we decided to try it. Made a last-minute birthday reservation on a Monday night at 6:30pm (in the month of April), so this would be my first "Roy's" experience. And I feel I made a very good choice!Â
:: Location ::
If you're entering the International Market Place from Kalakaua Ave, you'll find this seafood/steakhouse located in the very back, on the third floor. Next to Liliha Bakery. It's a nice escalator walk just getting here, unless you find parking in the parking structure close to it.Â
::: Atmoshphere :::
Upon arrival, it seemed busy and fairly loud, but nothing discouraging to us. Everyone seemed to be relaxed and in vacation mode. I did notice a couple of large groups or families celebrating birthdays as well. Plus another group that was having a retirement party. For the most part it was pretty chill.Â
Prior to our reservation time, we grabbed a drink at the bar while we waited. Because the dining area felt immersed with patrons and servers walking around, we decided to remain at the bar to eat instead. And I'm glad we did, or we would have never met Jared the bartender. We'll get to service and him in a minute.
:::: Entrées ::::
Started with the Kampachi Crudo ($29) which is one of my favorite fishes (that I love catching in the ocean), yellowtail. This had three different caviar which complimented the sauce well. Very pricey, but an excellent starter!Â
Next, I broke out the Yelp check-in and ordered the free Chicken Spring Rolls (normally $16), which was honored. These were scrumptious too! I'd totally order these next time. Â
For my entrée choice, I couldn't decide so I simply chose the EH 1849 PRIX FIXE ($68), and man I was excited hearing about the Market Catch being Swordfish. It was a 'must try' imo! The prix fixe came with brussel sprouts, which was OK. It's just I had that feeling of 'I can make this at home' that I didn't care for it much. I just wanted that truffle risotto Swordfish with that lemon capers already! It came out and fug me, this dish was fuggin' SUPERB! Compliments to the chef, because I absolutely loved this dish that I cleaned the plate. As for the dessert in the prix fixe, we ended with the Passion Fruit Dreamsicle which was pretty refreshing.Â
And instead of a wine pairing, I chose to sip on a double shot of Classe Azul Tequila ($55). I mean why not, it was my wife's birthday.
Oh yeah, as for the birthday girl, she ordered the Tender Beef Short Ribs ($51) which was also an excellent choice! I don't know how they do it, but it was so soft, really flavorful, and braised to perfection. Again, compliments to the chef! She loved it and I loved the leftovers the next day.
::::: Service & the Bar :::::
From the start, the hostesses were definitely nice and helpful. And I asked a few servers that passed by a few questions, and they had been cordial in answering as well. But back to the bar... All of the drinks were served by Jared, and this guy was "Tha MAN!" From the menu he created, a Hawaiian Pineapple Martini ($16), a Strawberry Kiss ($17), and a Lychee Martini ($17). And wooooo every drink was simply gorgeous and delectable with every sip. Really expensive, but worth it! I think it's gotta be the magic of Jared making these drinks with a combination of his skill and awesome personality. He made our night with these fantastic tasting drinks and simple conversations. Thank you Jared, we left here on a high note!
:::::: TL:DR ::::::
Eating House 1849 is a fast-paced, but chill place to hang out at with a fine tasting drink. It's very expensive here in my opinion, but the food and drinks are 'astounding' to say the least. Large and small groups come here to celebrate, so grabbing a table shouldn't be an issue. Service from the staff is welcoming and friendly as well. Would I come back or visit any other Roy's associated restaurants? You better believe it!Helpful 12Thanks 3Love this 13Oh no 0 - Apr 2, 2024

One of my favorite lunch locations in Waikiki is Eating House by Roy Yamaguchi. Why? The food is very tasty and they have a good selection of Pacific Island cuisine dishes to choose from. I've never been disappointed or left hungry at any of Roy's restaurants.
We concluded our Ferrari Club of America Hawaii drive this past weekend at Eating House. The food contained in this reel, is what our members ordered, not what I ate, so many do not have ratings. Sorry! You'll just have to try what looks good and what other people have recommended on Yelp and Google.

My bf and I ordered the date night special for 2 which came with oysters, filet mignon with crab cakes, seafood & pea risotto, & for dessert, hot chocolate soufflé. Everything item is meant to be shared. $130
We came with another couple and they ordered the same.
I really enjoyed the crab crakes with the filet mignon. The seafood & pea risotto was creamy and came with lobster, scallops, shrimp and Manilla clams. I very much enjoyed it.
The dessert was also pretty good. It was topped with vanilla ice cream and I loved the gooey hot chocolate that was filled inside the soufflé.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Apr 1, 2024
Been here twice and both times were good. Portion size is just right! The first time I came, we got a variety of things to try and our favorite was the brussel sprouts. It was crispy and the sauce for it just matched everything.
They have indoor and outdoor seating with ceiling fans (like the ones Costco has). During the cold and windy nights, I do not recommend sitting outside. The fan and wind just blows your food cold real fast.....
Service is good. They were able to explain to you about the menu and specials they have. If you are unsure of how certain protein is cooked, they will tell you chefs recommendation.
I would say it's a good place for celebration or just a date night.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Apr 17, 2024

It's a good family restaurant a little upscale but not over the top. You can dress casual or dress fancy you'll fit in either way. Upon arrival greeted by a hostess she was ok. We arrived a few minutes early and had to wait but not too long it ended up being the time of our reservation. Our waitress was very nice and explained the menu and what she recommends. My husband decided to try the selection and was impressed with how wonderful it tasted. I ordered the fish and it was fresh and delicious. You can choose how you would like it cooked and I selected grilled. Delicious food and decent serving size. We recommend this restaurant if you're ever in Waikiki. It's a little pricey but delicious.
