UX / UI Design Project Case Study Wellness App / Meditation App MINDSPACE

The group of three students at Bootcamp Berlin took a challenge to create a meditation App on behalf of a client IMTTA. This project waked up our big interest, knowing that the meditation as an approved technic for relaxing, stress reducation and well being helps especailly in that time of stressful work, lack of free time, lonely. I had a great pleasure to work together in team with my colleagues Diana Boada and Felix Schweizer.

Meditation is known to have numerous benefits for overall well-being.It’s important to note that meditation is not a cure-all, and individual experiences may vary. However, integrating regular meditation practice into your routine can support your overall well-being and provide a range of positive effects for your mind, body, and emotions.

Stress reduction: Meditation can help reduce stress by activating the body’s relaxation response. It helps calm the mind, relax the body, and regulate the stress hormone cortisol. Improved mental health: Meditation has been found to be beneficial for mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. Increased focus and concentration: Regular meditation practice has been shown to enhance focus, attention, and concentration.Enhanced self-awareness: Meditation cultivates self-awareness by encouraging you to observe your thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations without judgment.Better sleep: Many meditation practices, such as mindfulness and relaxation techniques, can promote better sleep. Increased resilience and emotional well-being: Meditation can contribute to emotional resilience by helping you develop a greater capacity to handle life’s challenges and bounce back from adversity. Physical health benefits: Beyond mental well-being, meditation has been associated with various physical health benefits.

Creating a digital product as meditaton App included complete process following the phases: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.

Firstly the group started with Secondary Research to understand different Apps which are available at the market to know their features, market range, design. We have recognised few meditaton apps on the market that are our direct competitors:

  • Headspace: Headspace is one of the most well-known meditation apps. It offers guided meditations for various purposes such as stress reduction, better sleep, and improved focus. The app also provides mindfulness exercises and techniques for daily life.
  • Calm: Calm is another popular meditation app that offers guided meditations, sleep stories, breathing exercises, and relaxing music. It covers a wide range of topics like anxiety, stress, and self-care
  • 10% Happier: 10% Happier is an app designed for skeptics or those who want a practical approach to meditation. It offers guided meditations and courses taught by experienced teachers. The app also includes talks and interviews with experts in the field.

Understanding user- needs deeply, we conducted both type of user interviews: qantitative and qualitative. The Quantitative Interview was created by Google.doc, 36 people between 30–45 years old answered 18 questions which were related to meditation habits, benefits, duration of meditation, feelings, etc. The survey took 8 min, and connected us with interesting data, giving us clear picture of meditation habits by people. The purpose of meditation is reduction of stress and anxiety, focus and productivity , enchance well-being. The time of meditation is various, as 35 % of people mediate in the morning, 30% mediate in the afternoon and 35% mediate in the evening.

The next step of research was Qualitative Research, that was conducted with 6 people who meditate daily, 3 of them use meditation app, 3 of them don´t use meditation app. The age of intrviewees was the same as in quantitative research between 30-45 years old. The interviews took 20–30 min time, conducting via Zoom and Phone.

From our collected interviews data we created Affinity Diagram, clastering data according to their similarites. Using data from Affinity Diagram we organize them in categories to create Emphathy Map. As a result of those two steps we created our User Personal. Bianca is our User Persona, who is an experienced saleswoman who recently moved to Berlin to work at Amazon, and despite trying to maintain a work-life balance, is under constant pressure and has limited personal time, which has led to significant sleep issues. Bianca goals are to stress relief, improving sleep quality, maintain a work life balance by setting clear boundaries between work and personal time, improve sleep quality and sleep routine exploring relaxation techniques.

USER PERSONA

Bianca´s Journey Map displays a simple day in Bianca´s life from wake up at 6 am till bed time at 10.30 pm. The phases inculde a daily activities before work, during the work, after work and before going to bed. Bianca wakes up not fit at 6 am, after her breakfast which is important for her, she starts to work from home office at 7.30 am. At noon Bianca takes a break for a lunch, the working day is finishing successfully at 6:30 pm Bianca is satisfield with her performance at work today, and she can jump to sport before she meets close friend of her at 8 pm. Before Bianca goes to sleep she is self motivated to study Spanish, finally at 10.30 pm she is going to bed, ready for new challenges tomorrow.

JOURNEY MAP

We came up with a Problem Statement which isBusiness professionals, who have constrained and limited time want to improve and track thier mental health because they are struggling to maintain a stable mood and manage their emotions”

Using a Moscow Model, we defined different features of our product: Muss have: personalization feature, timer, quided meditation, progress tracking, compatibility. Should have : reminder, easy navigation. Could have: gratitude journey, sleep meditation. offline meditation, multi language support. Wont have: forcing update, texting other users. complexity.

MVP Statement: 1.Our meditation app offers a library of guided and non-guided meditations, led by expert instructors. 2. With a variety of soundscapes to choose from, our app is designed to help users alleviate their stress and improve their overall well-being.

With the help of Crazy 8 we skretched our ideas, collecting best options to create the Low Fidelity Wireframe. The testing phase is important part of the process, we tested our Low Fidelity Prototype with help of 3 colleagues of us, and got very useful feedback: 1. visibility has to be improved, 2 adding narrows for navigations, 3 good personalized features, 4. good meditatation options, 5. features of the product are totally new on the market what differentiate the app of other apps.

LOW FIDELITY

Using Figma we created Mid Fidelity Wireframe using improved features of testing phase of Low Fidelity Wireframe. Crucial important in this project phase is Usability Testing which helped us to collect information of our product to improve and start the next phase Hi Fidelity Wireframe.

MID FIDELITY

Before starting High Fidelity Prototype we made a Style Tile /Guide, which incudes fonts, buttons, colors for our product. Style Tile / Guide presents a main direction in final phase of building our product visualy.

STYLE TILE

In the last phase we built Hi- Fidelity Prototype and conducted Desirability Testing to understand what users think about the aesthetics and visual appeal of a product . The Desirability Testing confirmed that all characteristics of our product are well done and product is ready to be presented to our client.

Four screen down show first steps opening the MINDSPACE App. The digital product wants to understand user needs and issues. The user has to click on options to give a feedback the system for next action to start meditation journey.

MINDSPACE

The actions before start of meditaton shown in screen down after log in in system. The App shows a user in the last screen, how to use App, adding goals as well as types of services.

MINDSPACE

The MINDSPACE App offers the user to choose a type of practices which includes: meditation, widsom, focus, progress, sleep, and breating as well as time 1–3 min, 3–5 min, 5–10 min, 15- 20 min. Based on previous review of your needs and issues, the App suggests a user appropriate service.

MINDSPACE

The progress option is crucial important to evoluate the meditaton. The system in first screen down shows days, minutes and practice showing user mood analyses. The user feedback is important too for further App improvements.

MINDSPACE

The user profile pages show different features like describe user, user goals, and likes. The App provieds user with new suggestions based on profile.

MINDSPACE

Our mission was successfully done, creating an App on behalf of our client respecting client order and wishes. Our product was developed following all design thinking phases as well as following users needs and expectations. We built an App which features allow users to use it easy, simple, visual design like colors are relax and calm as well as typography. We are sure that our product will fulfill users expactation with features and help them to enjoy using it. The big challenge in this project was to create a product which is practical to use, respecting client expectation and users need.
