Welcome back to Team Omega’s final blogpost where we give you a walkthrough of what we did during the last sprint.
Sprint 5 recap
Sprint 5 was all about realizing the Smart QR-Code concept. So, the goal was to create a minimum viable product that consists of 2 prototypes: 1 for our client, HvA Facility Services and 1 for the DSS Showcase.
Prototype for HvA Facility Services:
- A native app that could be integrated in HvA’s existing app called MijnHvA.
- A proof of concept of the Smart QR code.
- A product video to showcase the prototype.
- A research paper during the course of this project.
Prototype for the DSS exhibition:
- A webapp to show the basic principle of our concept.
- A product video to showcase the prototype.
- A screen that displays the most upvoted open-ended feedback.
Sprint 6
We considered sprint 5 and sprint 6 as one sprint, where the sprint goals are similar to each other:
“Finish the proof of concept and prepare for the exhibition!”
We’ll give you updates about the following prototypes:
- Smart QR-Code
- Web app
- Native app
Smart QR-Code
We managed to build the box, make the lights inside the box change according to the user’s input in the webapp and install the LED-strips inside the QR-Code box.
We use the LED strip WS2813 because you can individually control each LED light. The LED strips are connected to the Arduino Adafruit feather HUZZAH with ESP8266.
Not everything went smoothly, as the originally box didn’t fit together because the 2-layers of black paint made the wood thicker than planned. So, we had to laser cut the box again and left it white.
Web app
Some functionalities that have been added to the web app this sprint are:
- The Tinder feedback swiping (swipe right if you agree and left if you disagree with feedback another user has given).
- A pie chart within the app that displays the results from the multiple-choice question.
- A connection between the MySQL database that sends a signal to the Arduino to change the lights accordingly.
- Some adjustments to the font, images, colours and multiple-choice question.
- A word cloud that shows the most upvoted feedback.
Native app
The following things have been changed within the native app:
- Combining every functionality (Weekly Question, viewing the weekly question results and swiping Tinder feedback) into one app.
- Adding the new design so it matches HvA’s brand design.
- Adding an option to give your own open-ended feedback which others can upvote/downvote.
Showcase
The final exhibition took place on 23 January 2019 where over 100 visitors from all over the country came to admire all 6 projects.
These are some insights from the visitors:
- People of the HvA are interested to collaborate with Digital Society School. For example: the HvA could provide classes about DSS’ learning methodologies or give students the opportunity to do a minor at the DSS.
- People liked the interaction with the QR-Code installation where the lights grabbed their attention. What we noticed was that most of the time, they skipped the poster and kept watching until one of use approached them to give an explanation.
- People did not expect a web app to have native functionalities. So, at the Tinder feedback swiping part they kept pressing the arrows.
