Born at the stroke of midnight: meet Quebec’s first babies of 2024

The traditional search for the first baby born in 2024 in Quebec continued on Monday. For part of the day, it was believed that the first birth had taken place in Outaouais, but it seems that it instead took place in Montreal.
The CISSS de l’Outaouais announced on its Facebook page that little Mylan Lagacé was born at 12:01 a.m. and that he weighs 3.18 kilograms.
However, on Monday evening, the CIUSSS de l’Est-l’Île-de-Montréal announced that it had recorded a birth that occurred at midnight at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital (HMR).
“The baby was born at midnight sharp,” confirmed Ariane Perry-Guénette, clinical nurse in the HMR delivery room. “It is a boy, weighing 3.95 kilograms and named Mateo,” the CIUSSS said in a press release.
The CIUSSS did not go so far as to say that this was the first baby born in Quebec in 2024, but it specified that little Mateo was the first baby born “on Montreal territory.”
Also at the stroke of midnight, a baby girl born at Montreal’s St. Mary’s Hospital Centre.
“The first baby of the year in our CIUSSS was born at St. Mary’s Hospital Centre at 0h00,” wrote the CIUSSS de l’Ouest de l’Île de Montréal in a Facebook post. “It’s a beautiful little girl of 3.425 kg named Julia.”
“Congratulations to the parents,” they added. “And happy new year!”
The first baby born at Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital this year was also a girl.
Born at 12:45 a.m., Luz Gaia Graciano Gaona made her grand entrance on New Year’s Day — weighing 7.6 pounds.
A few hours later, a family welcomed the MUHC’s first newborn of 2024.
“Lina-Maria Ben Amor was born at 3:19 a.m. on January 1, 2024, weighing 3.68 kg,” they wrote on their website.
“Both the baby and her mother Olena are doing well,” they added.
“New Year’s good news has arrived at the McGill University Health Centre,” they said. “In the form of a baby girl.”
