Jenna Elfman’s growing, but not on ‘Purpose’

TV shows are always padding six-packed stars to look pregnant and finding oversized objects to hide pregnant actresses’ bellies when the story doesn’t call for it. But what does a series do when their star is pregnant in real life and on the show — but growing too quickly in reality for the show’s timeline?

Such is the problem facing “Accidentally on Purpose,” the new Jenna Elfman series. For the uninitiated, Jenna plays Billie — a 40-something movie critic whose one-night stand with a 20-year-old results in an unplanned pregnancy. Then on Sept. 14, Jenna announced that she was pregnant in real life as well! At the time Jenna said, “my character’s pregnant the whole first season, so I said, ‘It’s a good time to have another baby, because we won’t have to hide it.'”

But given the growth of her belly (as seen on the left, at an event this weekend) in comparison to her size on the show, I have to wonder if producers would like it if Jenna could take a pregnant pause and allow the storyline to catch up to reality.
