Morristown Senior Honored By NJ State Board of Education

Accolades mount as Ankita Sharma prepares for Ivy League.

Morristown High School senior Ankita Sharma may have her sights set on Rhode Island, where she’ll attend Brown University in the fall, but New Jersey had one last honor to give her.

The soon-to-graduate Colonial was one of 10 students or student groups recognized by the New Jersey State Board of Education recently for achievements both in and out of the classroom.

Sharma was described by her teachers and counselors as “cheerful, ambitious, interested, and interesting; effective leader, and truly lovely person; highly motivated, and quick thinking,” according to the Morris School District.

Sharma was a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society; founder of the high school’s Model United Nations Club; Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper; tutor; volunteer; and straight-A student.

Adding to the accolades, Sharma was the first high school student selected to participate in the Summer Honors Research Program at the New Jersey Center for Science, Technology and Mathematics at Kean University. The focus of the research was to develop new approaches to the treatment of an aggressive brain cancer called glioblastoma.

“Ankita is one of our top students whose record of academic achievement, leadership and service clearly sets her apart, and thereby makes her worth of the honor bestowed on her by the New Jersey State Board of Education,” said Morristown High School principal Mark Manning.
