HATBORO, PA —Crooked Eye Brewery has made a name for itself in the borough.

The business at 13 E. Montgomery Ave. was recognized at the Borough Council's committee meeting recently for its community contributions. Crooked Eye Brewery received a certificate and a "Shop Small Hatboro" basket at the meeting.

Crooked Eye Brewery began as a hobby for Jeff Mulherin where he messed around in his kitchen with a 5-gallon system.

Mulherin realized how much he loved the brewing process and how good the beer was. Others recognized that too as they drank and loved his beers.

He continued to learn, research, and brew but the kitchen started to get a little overrun with equipment.

So he decided to move into his parents’ garage and bumped up to a 30-gallon pilot system.

His father, Paul Mulherin, and his uncle, Paul Hogan, tasted the potential of the brews and knew that if only he had space to expand and produce on a larger scale, they could quench the thirst with tasty beers.

In early 2013, they found the perfect spot and moved into their Hatboro location.

For almost a year, they brewed and gave away beers at borough events while waiting for their brewer’s license to get filed and approved.

In February 2014, they were finally licensed to sell to the public and this is when Hatboro residents really began to take notice of the family-owned brewery right in their little town.

In December 2014, a game change occurred for the microbrewing industry as the laws in PA changed to where microbreweries could sell pints in their brewpub space as long as the brewery could be closed off to the public while brewing is taking place.

Since then, thousands have passed through their doorway to drink, toast, and celebrate. Their focus is on crafting great-tasting beer, proclaiming “Good for what Ales you.”

There are always eight of their core beers on tap.

Crooked Eye is a sponsor of Hatboro events and has helped fundraise for several local causes, including for the Hatboro Police Department's K9 Officer Louie in 2019 when they released a special brew for Louie called K9 59 in which all proceeds sold were donated to the K9 unit.

"The Borough of Hatboro thanks Crooked Eye Brewery for all they have done for our community to help make it a great place to live, work and play," borough officials said.
