    Posted: 11 August 2021 at 9:40am

Pixeljoint is holding another palette competition which is open to everyone and is quite simple.
Submit your 19 color unique + original color palette.
The winning palette will be used in PJs next Isometric collab: CarnISOl - which is about amusement park, zoo and circus. Other award winning palettes may also be used in other events and challenges.

Add a rare trophy to your profile.

Competition closes in 2 weeks, August 25, 2021. (CLOSED)

- The winning palette will be used on PJs next ISOcollab project. If you submit a palette you acknowledge that it will be used by others for the purpose of this project and credit may not be posted by participants if they submit their project piece to their gallery but you will get overall credit for it. These palettes are not to be considered art so please do not submit to your galleries without an artwork. It's best to assume that others may use your palette beyond this project. By entering you are giving permission to others to use.

- Win a spiffy trophy + points which are rare and will look great in your profile.
+1000 Pts+500 Pts +250 Pts+100 Pts-HM*

* multiple honorable mentions may be awarded.

- Judges are your PJ Mods and select invited PJ members.

- Palettes will be judged on the basis of how it would work on the project theme, which is Carnival. Multi-purpose palettes always have a better chance.

- You may enter more than once but quality is better than quantity.

- Posting works using your palette on this thread is a very good way to show how your palette is supposed to work. You can post your original or existing works or other people's work, even pieces from old ISO collabs recolored by your palette.

- A unique + original palette is the goal but a well balanced palette is very important even if your entry is monochromatic.

- Use this template for your submission.

- While not mandatory, it would be cool to give your palette a name.

You must name the HEX values and NO black - 000000 or white - FFFFFF

DYSTOPIA19

I wanted to make a palette that was 'out there', bright and fun to use (like a carnival or zoo), but also maintaining versatility and flexibility.

Here is the palette applied to two previous ISO collabs:

And here it is applied to the works of vierbit and Retronator respectively:

A reminder: for anyone using GrafX2, there's a script in the Toolbox for automatically generating the palette-template (with all the hex-values).

Coney Island

Inspired by old posters for Coney Island.

Here's the analysis (is there a link to a full explanation of what this shows, by the way? As a colouring novice, there are a couple of things I don't understand e.g. the section to the left of the indexed palette and the brightness match):

Here are a few previous collabs in the palette:

The 4x3 Primary colors spectrum/gradients are...
1. (b65%) colormatched with 65% brightness weight
2. (b10%) colormatched With 10% brightness weight
3. 50% Saturation
4. 50% Lightness
(In all honesty, I usually don't pay much attention to these, at least not for smaller palettes).

The vertical Brightness-match diagram (bri-match) matches all levels of brightness (vertical) with increasing amount of brightness-matching (horizontal).
That is, as we move right we allow more and more saturated colors, as long as their brightness match.
This will let you now all the options in your palette for filling a gap in the brightness gradient.
The plots to the right of the diagram is every color's brightness level.

To explain this further:
Colormatching is normally done by colordistance (whatever that really is)...but the most important aspect of a color is its brightness. So by weighing in brightness with the colordistance the matching can find more useful (or perceptually accurate) colors

Thanks! That's made it a lot clearer, and I think it's also illuminated ways I could use the analysis to improve future palettes.

If I may ask one more question, what does the HLF row indicate? I think I've got everything else now.

HLF simply stands for "Half Shades", which is a very important concept in palette design. You want every color in your palette to have at least one other color that could work as a believable shade/darker value (except the darkest one, ofcoz).

Half-shade is not as straightforward as just cutting rgb-values in half. Brightness is exponential in (computer) nature. So things need to be gamma-corrected. You may also have different contrasts in mind.

The first three rows uses gamma-correction of three different values {2.6, 1.9 & 1.3} to find a match...or even better; a selection of options.
The bottom row uses a different algorithm that focuses more on saturation and hue.

This is the part we are talking about:

Thanks so much for taking the time to explain. I need to give GrafX2 a proper try so your scripts are to hand (and for lots of other reasons too).

So...I decided to play around. And got a good palette working pretty fast...actually it was excellent, almost magical...it would remap most pictures in a great way!

Then I realized the lack of a good bright gray is too limiting for isometrics...so I went berserk and butchered the whole thing!

It's not safe around children, and you probably don't want it to meet your mother...but it should do a decent job in an iso-collab!?

behold AMUZE-ISO19

@Gecimen: Yeah, I might revisit it at some time and perhaps expand it into a 24 color palette or something.
