Extroardinary work. There's a lot to look at. This piece will never get old.
oh my blurry eyes is look sharping after look at this awesome pixel art map game. it's curing...
wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. biggest jaw drop ever when I found this page. How is this not in the hall of fame??
Ah, what we are witnessing here is the work of a true ARTISTE! Inspired by the myriad manifestations of beauty in the cosmos and radiating it back as a collage of pixel art worlds (game or not), transformed by your creative touch. I am in awe! Smashtastic.
This is the kind of art style that I love since I'm a kid. You are an inspiration to me, sir. Great work!
It looks so seiken densetsu 3.. Still is impressive. Good job
Dude...just dude. Grats on #1 - I wasn't even aware of this piece and my jaw dropped 16 times.
Almost didn't even catch the final column!
This is astoundingly good. Please let me know if you're ever working on the art for a game - I'll be buying it. :P
Oh... That's much more than completely amazing. This is mindblowing.
@Altourus
Yes, the maps were for the most part build out of tiles with some objects/sprites placed afterwards.
Either because they were animated, destroyable or had some other special function.
Question, was this done with a combination of a tile set and a set of sprites? I ask in regard to things like the lantern in the village or the torch held by a skeleton in the graveyard. Seems like it would be a lot of duplicated images to place those pieces over different backgrounds
After further analysis of this, I've come to a conclusion, your a god damn wizard.
@Faceless
No, they are not in chronological order. But the village scene was in 2010 and the dungeon on the top left was 2013.
@Dr D
I agree that especially the older ones have some contrast issues. But in game this wasn't really a problem.
The game was also running in 320x240, so these mockups show a much larger area then what you would actually see in game.
@Elk
Yeah, now that you mention it. But it's just coincidence.
@TheInquisitor
For some designs I did some sketches beforehand, like the scenes with the shifting perspective. Or some details on the buildings. But most of the time I already have a clear picture in mind before starting drawing.
Do you sketch these designs out - say like the village buildings, before leaping into the pixels or do you just wing it?
I was very sorry to hear the project coming to a sudden end :(
Thanks for compiling and showing these.
Absolutely fantastic. You really are one of the pixel masters. I'm going to study this next time I do some RPG stuff.
Love the Desert-Town :) somehow I connect it with Friedensreich Hundertwasser ^^
Despite how much I love these, I do have a few criticisms about them:
Objectively speaking, I think for the purpose of being game art, most of these are too busy, there is too much contrast/details/overall business and I feel like the characters would get visually lost in some of these environments. It's mainly on the buildings and collidable objects. Also there are these really bright colored lights in a lot of scenes which really detract attention from the eye.
One little nitpick on second village scene - I would get rid of the small gray roof shingles. Makes it look a bit too much like the ground imo, which uses the same kind of pattern.
Again I love these, this is some of my favorite pixel art ever.. but wonder how well it really works as game art.
I wanted to add this to my favorites, but it already has 128 favorites and that is such a nice number!
Looking at this seriously makes me all giddy and happy. Your technique is amazing! Extremely beautiful work :)
I loved the beach, loved the snow floors loved loved the colors, loved everything!
I'm curious as to the dates of each of these.
Are they in chronological order?
Oh, and of course, awesome stuff. I particularly like the snow scene.
@yumbie
You're probably confusing me with someone else. I know Abysswolf's work, but never interacted with him.
I also don't have a deviantart account.
amazing.. i remember you're abyssalwolf's friend on deviant. pro
I thought my eyes were tricking me when I saw this. Incredible.
Some of this stuff is old!? O__O
This is truly amazing stuff - and I don't say this lightly. You've truly crossed a threshold with this work. Super impressive
Insta-fave. There is so much good work here, my mind is blown.
Took forever and a day to load.... totally worth it though.
Great ref material, cheers for sharing. :)
Didn't notice the fourth column of awesomeness. I'm speechless, this piece is gorgeous.
Verrry impressive!
Really really good work.
Of all the sprite I have looked lately at, this one is by far the best.
this is so sick
