If you're like me, you covet beautiful garments. You love to go to clothing exhibits and ooh and aah over the gorgeous clothes and are fixated on the details. You sketch, take a mental picture (even a cellphone photo if its allowed) and promise to try them at home.

And then real life happens and you realize, you don't have the time! Or the expertise to create those details yourself.

I have good... no GREAT news for you. This book by Lynda Maynard is made for us! Before this book, even the mention of the word couture would get this reaction from me ... "Too much work, too difficult, who has the time?"

Truth be told, this book sat on my desk for more than a month before I finally sat down to read and review it! But once I opened it, there was no going back. Life as I know it will never be the sameI know I seem a little too dramatic right now but tell me this, have you ever seen a table of contents with clear thumbnails? That itself was a seller for meI know which technique to refer to quickly.

And you know we love spiral bound sewing books so thank you for that Interweave

Lynda explains each of the 39 techniques in this book with large clear photographs which tells me how much work went into this book. And speaking of techniques, there are 8 techniques just for different types of neck bindings!

Style suggestions are scattered throughtout the book...

If I had to pick my favorite technique from this book, it would be Ribbon-Trimmed Collar Band. I mean just look at this beauty!

Couture techniques are divided into the following for easy reference.

1. Bindings and Finishes

2. Design Details: On Show

3. Design Details: Concealed

Lynda hasn't missed a thing... Even the essentionals are explained in depth.

This book is definitely a Couture Techniques book but you'll also find inspiration from the fashion runways...

And you'll learn about Linings and Luxury Fabrics...

And last but not the least, How to make a muslin!

The Dressmaker's Handbook of Couture Techniques was an eye opener for me. I'd never heard or seen the Organza Bubble Hem before but know that I know, there is no going back :)

This book will NOT even find its way into my bookshelf. It will REMAIN on my sewing table! I can't wait to try some of the binding techniques in my next project.

Negative response to book -- it's lovely and photos help explain the techniques, but not very useful to the medium to advanced sewer wanting to learn more. Not terribly expensive ($18+ at Amazon) but not very useful either. The best section explained treatment of high-end fabrics, like silk velvet, which don't fit into my washable life. Some techniques looked impossible or really strange (padding darts, for instance). Get it from a library and look before giving it room in your house!

This book would be useful to any sewist, and especially to those who are "visual learners," as I am. Much experience has taught me that when it comes to sewing techniques, I need to *see* what is being discussed, not just read written instructions. It appears that this book does a great job of facilitating both finding the appropriate technique to use, and using the techniques to make our own garments much more professional-looking.

Lynda Maynardd also has an excellent book Sew the Perfect Fit and i am so disappointed that i will miss that workshop at PR weekend. She is a charismatic teacher that explains so thoroughly and clearly and makes perfect sense of the fitting process. she adjusts from top to bottom and clearly explains what corrections are neeed based on how the fabric is hanging or pulling in specific areas. i learned so much from her book on fitting. for those lucky enough to go ---enjoy the workshop.

Even though I've been sewing for almost 50 years, I still am working on taking my sewing to the next level. I've never wanted to quilt or do crafty things. What I do want is beautiful clothing for myself and my family. I admire the couture and have taken one couture class which has allowed me to sprinkle those techniques throughout my sewing. I really want to learn more and to have detailed beautiful things. If I'm sewing, I want it to be gorgeous and it looks as if this book would help me get there.

I have been toying with buying a couture methods book recently (Prom approaches and I have a niece with a strapless that needs altering) - this is perfect! Thanks for the screen shots of the pages - it was great to see the images included - it helps me decide whether I should order it or not. [yes, this review helped!]

Deepika, I have been wondering if I wanted to own this book and your review convinced me that I do. I am currently taking a university course in flat pattern making and couture sewing techniques. There is barely adequate time to learn making our slopers and completing our class project. Couture techniques are not even really being discussed. I swooned over the photo of the ribbon trimmed collar band because it is the hidden elements of couture that excite me most.

I have one book on couture (won't mention the name) but this one trumps it many times over. The photos you've shown are exceptional and it looks like a perfect primer for some new techniques. I caught the couture bug last year and now realize it's one of those never ending learning process addictions...just the thing us sewists love! I'd be thrilled to add this to my library.

I must say that the book is very concise, to the point, with short descriptions of the couture techniques accompanied with clear pictures. I am sure I will read it from cover to cover very quickly, and keep refering to it for my next projects. Good book for the learning curve !

I'm a perfectionist when I sew. Therefore, I appreciate couture sewing. If I had this book, it could take my sewing to a whole new level. All that great information at my fingertips. I just love all the photos in the book. That alone caught my eye. I recognize some of the photos in the book from concepts taught in her Craftsy class, "Sewing on the Edge: Finishing Techniques". I certainly wouldn't mind having this book so I could learn even more from Lynda.

Sometime during my mid 50's daughter and I went shopping for me-- searching for a simple black dress for me. Something good for business meeting or cocktails and dinner. We looked at everything in every store. Then while moving down the escalator I spotted it across the main floor on a mannequin in a corner. No sparkles, no frills, nothing. Nothing but great couture skill and sewing techniques. I said to DD--there look way over there do you see it? That's what I want something like that. DD so wanted something nice for her mom. When she hit the escalator landing she darted across the room. By the time I toodled over to her she was standing at the mannequin holding the price tag in her hand, her face was white. "MOTHER--how do you do that--how do you pick out the most expensive black wool in town?" Easy I said it has an elegant soul. That's what this book will help me to accomplish for both DD and myself ! ;-)

It is interesting that the word "couture" brings with it such trepidation from sewists. I love that Maynard details 8 different techniques for neck binding - especially v- necks. I've always made a mess of V-necks and would really benefit from reading her book.

Oh, that table of contents is great. I'd also have thought that 'couture' meant too difficult and/or time-consuming but the illustrations and examples here seem to make it possible...
