Say Bye to Betelnut, Closing After 20 Years in Cow Hollow

It’s the end of a Union Street era.

This Sunday, September 27 marks Betelnut’s final day serving San Francisco Asian street food. Owner Bill Higgins confirmed to Tablehopper that after 20 years, the restaurant’s lease is up and the building owner did not renew. “We had a good run, with many periods of glory — the restaurant was emulated by many, and accomplished a lot. And it was a lot of fun. I think we showed many people a great time,” he said.

Betelnut went through a few chef shakeups in recent years after trying out a new concept with Hutong, which closed very quickly after a poor review from Michael Bauer. It turned back into Betelnut, and shortly thereafter longtime executive chef Alexander Ong left. No word yet on what will take Betelnut’s place in the neighborhood, but stay tuned for news on that front.
