History of chassis 4301030

Chassis 4301030 was the eighth M1 Procar built and the only example originally painted blue.

It was ordered by amateur German racing driver, Wolfgang Schutz, who had previously contested the Volkswagen Scirocco Junior Cup. Schutz secured backing for his 1979 Procar campaign from AirPress who manufactured window and sunroof air deflectors for a variety of European cars.

4301030 was signed off on May 9th 1979 and immediately dispatched for the opening Procar race of the season at Zolder where Schutz finished eighth.

For the rest of the year, Schutz had his car prepared at Project Four run by Ron Dennis. His best Procar results in 1979 were fifth at Monaco and sixth at Monza. However, as a consequence of four mid-season DNFs, Schutz only managed to place 16th in the championship standings having accrued 17 points.

Schutz was more successful in the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM) where he picked up two wins in the RT Group 4 class. The German also claimed a class win at the big money Norisring Trophy having crossed the line seventh overall.

Aside from a fourth place finish in the 1980 season-ending Procar race at Imola, Schutz had a disappointing campaign. His best results were a trio of ninth place finishes at Hockenheim, Zeltweg and Zandvoort. He also scored a tenth at Donington.

In the DRM, Schutz recorded a class win at Zolder plus podium finishes at the brace of Hockenheim events.

Chassis 4301030 was subsequently sold to Jurgen Kannacher for the 1981 season. That year, Kannacher also campaigned a second M1 Procar (chassis 4301066). Both cars were used in the DRM series.

Meanwhile, Wolfgang Schutz went on to become a prolific entrant in one-make Renault Cup championships such as those for the 5 Turbo, GTA Turbo and 21 Turbo.
