History of chassis 4301062

Chassis 4301062 was one of two M1 Procars delivered to Manfred Cassani (the other having been chassis 4301072).

In 1979, chassis 4301062 contested the inaugural Procar Championship and two rounds of the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM).

It was driven by Hans-Joachim Stuck who, since 1973, had been a factory BMW driver. Stuck dovetailed his 1979 M1 drive with an F1 campaign for the ATS team.

For chassis 4301062, Cassani secured backing from German audio equipment manufacturer Uher. It appeared in a handsome white and dark blue livery while the sister car (for Manfred Winkelhock) was yellow and sponsored by Kreis Telefonbuch / Irmen Werbung.

Stuck was one of five drivers to win a Procar race in 1979. Elio de Angelis, Jacques Laffite and Nelson Piquet took one victory each, Stuck won twice and Niki Lauda secured a hat-trick of wins on his way to the title.

Stuck’s victories came in the last two rounds of the year at Zandvoort and Monza. He finished five points behind Lauda in the standings and twelve ahead of third-place man, Clay Regazzoni.

Two weeks after the Procar season finale in Italy, Stuck took a class win in the DRM race at the Nurburgring. It was his second DRM class win of the year after victory at the Norisring back in June.

For 1980, chassis 4301062 was switched to a new white and blue colour scheme. HIS Jeans sponsored the car which had another crack at the Procar series and contested just over half that year’s DRM races. Manfred Schurti, Manfred Winkelhock and Christian Danner all appeared in the driver’s seat.

Highlights were a win for Schurti in the Procar race at Avus and six class wins in the DRM (two for Schurti and four for Danner).

Cassani sold chassis 4301062 to privateer Kurt Konig for 1981.

Over the next three seasons, Konig raced the car extensively and picked up half a dozen class wins including victory in the GT class at the 1981 Nurburgring 1000km (round seven of the World Sportscar Championship). For 1982, chassis 4301062 appeared in iconic orange colour scheme of Jagermeister.

Konig sold the M1 to Helmet Gall for 1984.

Gall mostly entered 4301062 for World Sportscar Championship events where secured numerous wins in the rather poorly-attended Group B class.

During 1984 and 1985, Gall’s BMW most notably took back-to-back Group B class wins at the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Chassis 4301062 was retired from competition duty at the end of the 1986 season. It bowed out as one of the most extensively raced M1 Procars. With over 25 outright and class wins in eight years of competition, it was also among the most successful.
