Xutos & Pontapés
Having started out as “Delirium Temens” and “Beijinhos e Parabéns”, their first real rehearsal took place on 22nd December 1978 in an old music center. The band’s live premiere was on 13th January 1979, as Xutos & Pontapés Rock ‘n’ Roll Band, as part of a “25 years of rock’n’roll” celebration, at the Alunos of Apolo room (Lisbon). They were given 6 minutes to play four songs, and shared the stage with Faíscas (considered by many as the first Portuguese punk rock band), who were retiring.
Tim (vocals and bass), Francis (guitar), Zé Pedro (guitar) and Kalú (drums) were the official members of the band after lead singer Zé Leonel left the group due to drug-related issues.
With the help of António Sérgio and the record label Rotação, they recorded their first two singles. In April 1982 they started recording “1978-1982”, a compilation of all the songs produced by the band during their first four years together.
Initially considered a punk group, Xutos became one of the most acclaimed bands amongst the more alternative fan circles. The band also started facing some censorship, as three of their songs (“Avé Maria”, “Mãe” and “Sémen”) were banned from some radio stations.
Francis left the band in May 1983, and João Cabeleira joined them in December of the same year.
They signed with Fundação Atlântica and produced the singles “Remar, Remar” and “Longe Se Torna a Espera”. They also recorded a longer version of “Remar, Remar” and the songs “Sexo” and “Formiga Branca” for a maxi-single which was never produced.
In December 1985 they released the LP “Cerco”, which included some of the band’s best songs and played three concerts in Spain.
The single “Barcos Gregos/O Homem do Leme”, one of the most famous, was produced in 1986. The gigs they played at Rock Rendez-Vous in Lisbon, on 31st July and 1st August, were recorded; however the group wasn’t happy with the outcome. Those recordings eventually went missing and the album was never produced. Meanwhile, the group signed with Polygram.
On February 1987 they released their album “Circo de Feras”, which includes songs such as “Contentores”, “Circo de Feras”, “Na América” and “Não Sou O Único”, which were met with overwhelming enthusiasm.
In November of the same year, “7º Single” was edited, including the songs “A Minha Casinha”, “A Minha Aventura Homosexual Com O General Custer” and “Eu Sou Bom”. The album quickly went platinum.
On March of the following year, along with Ramon Galarza and Paulo Junqueiro, they produced the album “88”. They played 60 gigs in four months, for more than 240.000 people. From the 29th to the 31st of June 1988 they played three concerts in Lisbon, which were recorded and released as “Xutos ao Vivo”, with a total of 28 tracks.
The compilation “Xutos & Pontapés 90” was released in Brazil, France and Spain.
The band’s sixth studio album, “Gritos Mudos” was recorded in Rio de Janeiro. After their return the band faced some management problems and went their separate ways for 6 months. At that point Tim joined the group “Resistência” and Zé Pedro opened Johnny Guitar (a bar) and played for Palma’s Gang.
They only got back together in 1991 and started rehearsing again. In November they threw a party at Johnny Guitar, in Lisbon, and Café Pinguim, in Oporto, where they played live acoustic versions of their songs for the very first time.
In November 1992 they produced “Dizer Não De Vez”, with Kalú and Fernando Rascão. The first single, “Chuva Dissolvente” was No.1 in Portugal. In December 1993 they released the album “Direito ao Deserto” and started touring the country, joined by Lisbon’s Metropolitan Orchestra.
The group’s 15th anniversary was celebrated in Coliseu do Porto, where they shared the stage with 31 portuguese bands and musicians, including GNR, Rádio Macau, Resistência, Peste e Sida, Delfins and Braindead.
BLITZ magazine granted them a BLITZ CAREER award in 1994, and the following year the band won a Best Album Award for “Ao Vivo na Antena 3”.
To commemorate their 20th anniversary, the band’s songs were covered by various Portuguese artists, and their photobiography, “Xutos & Pontapés/XX Anos” was released.
The band’s first DVD was recorded live at Pavilhão Atlântico in 2004, and in 2006 a Triple DVD was released.

Não sou o único / I’m not the only one
You think I’m an isolated case I’m not the only one staring at the sky Watching dreams depart Waiting for something to happen Pouring my anger Living my emotions Wishing for what I didn’t have Clinging to temptation. And when the clouds depart The blue sky will stay And when darkness disappears You’ll see the sun will shine You’ll see the sun will shine No, I’m not the only one I’m not the only one I’m not the only one staring at the sky You think I’m an isolated case I’m not the only one staring at the sky Listening to the advice of others And always falling into holes Wishing for what I didn’t have Holding on to what I don’t possess No, I’m not the only one… |
