OLIVER TANK | Past Present Future

Oliver Tank posted a new down-tempo electronic track, “Past Present Future”, on soundcloud. He says it’s a track he did for a new show on FBi radio called “Ears Have Ears: Unexplored Territories In Sound”. It’s 15 minutes long, and there’s ambient guitar, synth, and a gorgeous hollowed-out sound that ticks away like time itself. It’s a song about love. About two and a half minutes into the track, the rhythm fades away into spoken word, where an interviewer asks Duke Ellington, “Where did you get your ideas from?” The response: “The ideas? Oh, man, I got a million dreams. That’s all I do is dream. All the time.” The man then asks, “I thought you played piano?” Ellington responds, “No, this is not piano. This is dreaming.” Tank uses that segment to segue beautifully into his own type of dream of love. The conversation is muffled slightly, or distorted. But that response from Ellington is so memorable to me. It’s quite an ingenious usage of the clip. Like time, Tank’s song too comes back to itself, in the form of the original beat before the fade out into the clip. It’s also a nice link to Tank’s EP “Dreams”, a record that made Their Bated Breath’s list of ‘Best EPs of 2011’. You can follow Tank at facebook, twitter, and tumblr. — David D. Robbins Jr.
