NEW DELHI: Distancing itself from the demand for Kuki Country by World Kuki Zo Intellectual Council (WKZIC) as well from 'individuals' and 'groups' known for their anti-India stance and radical method, the Zomi Innkuan USA on Thursday said that it firmly believes in the wisdom of Indian leadership, and the democratic processes to address the plights of the Zomi people.
Earlier in July 2023 following the outbreak of violence in Manipur since May, the WKZIC submitted a memorandum to the secretary general of the UN, requesting for creation of a Kuki State, integrating all Ku-ki-Chin territories of Chin State (Myanmar/Burma), Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Bangladesh and Mizoram (India) and Kuki Hills in outer Manipur.
In a statement the Zomi Innkuan USA said that it believes in the power of peaceful dialogue and democratic processes to address concerns and effect change, as it cited its rally in front of in Washington, DC on September 15 is an effort “to boost the morale of our people and provide support within our means to those affected by the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur (India).”
However, the group terms the demand for creation of a Kuki country uncalled for it said: “… hereby unequivocally disowns any such individuals/ organizations and their actions. Furthermore, the demand for Kuki Country by WKZIC at this point in time, under present circumstances is totally uncalled for.”
Calling for an end to the violence, and the establishment of durable peace by creating a separate administration for the Zomi people through peaceful, democratic means, Zomi Innkuan USA reiterated the belief in Indian democracy and leadership, as stated Zomi Council Steering Committee (ZCSC) a few days earlier.
“Zomi Innkuan USA firmly believes in the wisdom of Indian leadership, and the democratic processes to address the plights of the Zomi people and resolve our long-standing political aspirations in India. The systematic exploitation, and institutionalised subjugation of the tribals of Manipur in general and the Zomi tribes in particular has reached the tipping point resulting in the present state-sponsored ethnic cleansing pogrom in the State. The situation calls for urgent stopping of violence, and the establishment of durable peace by creating a separate administration for the Zomi people through peaceful, democratic means.”
