These shops have been around since a long, long time, to the extent that a sweet called ledikeni was in fact created for Lady Canning during the British era. Bhim Chandra Nag, Strand Road

The first thing that will strike you upon entering this hallowed place is an English clock made by Cooke and Kelvey that has Bengali numbers. The sweet shop was established way back in 1826, and has been the pride of the city since then. The most interesting item here is the ledikeni that was first crafted in 1858 when Lady Canning, the wife of the then Viceroy of India, Charles John Canning, wanted a special candy prepared for her birthday. With time it has come to be known as ledikeni today.

Balaram Mullick & Radharam Mullick, Bhowanipore

Established in 1885, this incredible sweet shop in Kolkata was first started by Ganesh Chandra Mullick. Today it has numerous branches all over the city, but this one is the original one that still stands to this day. The sweet shop started by making jaggery sondesh, known as nolen gurer sondesh, and korapak sondesh. Today Balaram Mullick & Radharam Mullick is a name everyone recognises, and in fact, it is still known for its high quality jaggery sweet. So much so that industrialist Lakshmi Mittal ordered the sweet treat to be delivered at his London residence.

Nalin Chandra Das & Sons, Nutan Bazaar

The original shop that was opened way back in 1841 still stands, even though they have opened other branches across the city. Known for their incredible sondesh sweets that come in a huge variety, you have to come here to experience the best of sweets. There are some great fusion sweets here that you must try, including mango sondesh.

KC Das, Baghbazaar

The original creator of the incredibly tasty rosomalai, KC Das is a household name in Kolkata. The first shop was set up way back in 1866, and ever since then, this historical sweet brand has been dishing out exclusive sweets for the city. KC Das is also known for something else that the city is known for, and that is the humble rosogolla. In fact KC Das revolutionised the sweet by starting to sell them in vacuum cans. You can get as many cans as you want and take them home!
