Alternatively, there are buses from Shinjuku Station to Zao Onsen Town. However, this trip can take up to seven hours.

Zao Onsen is a small, walkable town tucked into the slopes of Mount Zao. However, for those spots a little further away, or for days when you’d prefer to save your energy for the slopes, there are local transportation options available.
Buses
From Yamagata City, which is about 10 miles away, there are regular 40-minute ski buses up to Zao Onsen. During the winter season, a shuttle bus connecting major places within Zao Onsen may also be available.
Ropeway
