Pro Update: Robert Vaden

5/14/2020 9:13:00 AM | Men's Basketball

Basketball life tends to come full circle. This holds true for former UAB standout Robert Vaden, who at age 35, returned home to Indianapolis to play for the Indy Express of The Basketball League (TBL), a 12 team league that began play in 2018.

And he has not missed a step.

The 6-5 guard averaged 20.4 points per game, while shooting 50.4 percent from the field – including 48.8 percent from 3-point range. The Express played 11 games before the season ended in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Vaden led Indy to a 9-2 record and was second in TBL with 39 3-pointers. He recorded double-figures in nine games and had three 30-point games, including a season-high 32 point performance against Dayton in the season finale. In that game against the Flight, Vaden was 11-for-15 from the field, including 8-for-10 from beyond the arc.

Prior to his time in TBL, Vaden was a third round pick for the Aliens of the BIG3 in 2019. He played in the NBA G League with the Erie Bayhawks and Westchester Knicks as well as overseas in Belgium, Germany, Italy and Slovakia. He also played in the NBA D-League for the Tulsa 66ers and Bakersfield Jam.

Vaden was a second round pick of the Charlotte Bobcats, going 54th overall in the 2009 NBA Draft.

After playing his freshman and sophomore season at Indiana, Vaden transferred to UAB prior to the 2007-08 season, leading the Blazers to a pair of postseason NIT appearances. In his two seasons as a Blazer, Vaden finished with 1,295 points, averaging 19.3 points per contest. He still holds the single-season record for points with 695 in 2007-08 and is just one of two Blazers to score over 40 points in a game – the other being current head coach Andy Kennedy.
