About the VU can
VU Amsterdam, like later Amsterdam UMC - location VUmc, literally became big thanks to the countless nickels and dimes saved in many households in the famous green VU can.
On April 1, 1932, the first VU can was distributed. From then until 2007, many generations of women worked within the organization Women VU Aid to develop and sustain VU Amsterdam. During that time, they raised tens of millions for the university with which they felt connected. Throughout the country, Reformed women set aside dimes and nickels in VU cans. At first they collected for the establishment of a Medical Faculty, later for the laboratories of Mathematics and Physics, and still later for projects such as better accessibility of the VU Main Building for the disabled.
