ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — More children in need will be receiving homemade blankets, thanks to the Project Linus Rummage Sale on Saturday, Oct. 21.
Attendees gathered at First Congregational United Church of Christ to find bargains on books, canned goods and home décor.
All the proceeds will be used to buy craft supplies for volunteers to make blankets through Project Linus.
PROJECT LINUS SPENDS 'DAY OF LOVE' MAKING BLANKETS FOR CHILDREN IN CRISIS
The nonprofit is made up of volunteers who make homemade security blankets for traumatized children.
"It could be sickness, it could be a fire, it could be a death in the family, it could be an accident... just a child who needs a blanket hug that has been made with lots of love," said Ellen Knoefel, chapter coordinator for WNC Project Linus.
Since it began in 1998, Project Linus has given out more than 92,000 blankets across Western North Carolina. Project Linus of Western North Carolina now covers Buncombe, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, Mitchell, Transylvania and Yancey counties.
Locally, blankets from Project Linus go to hospitals, sheriff's departments, domestic violence shelters, Guardian ad Litem Program of the NC 30th Judicial District, fire and rescue squads and individual children as needed.
