SCENIC BYWAY

Big Smoky Valley Scenic Drive

99.9 miles: 1 hours, 25 minutes

The Big Smoky Valley Scenic Drive (SR 376) bisects the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s snow-dusted Toiyabe and Toquima mountain ranges as they rise from the desert. The byway then passes the foothills of the San Antonio Mountains before descending into desert and the town of Tonopah.

The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest dominates the byway with 6,343,735 acres of mountain ranges, alpine lakes and forests. On most of the trip, mountains as high as 11,000 feet loom east and west of SR 376; expanses of sagebrush separate the road from the mountains. At Round Mountain, view a striking gold mine that looks like the bottom half of an Egyptian pyramid.
