Memoir of Hate Spin in 2017 Jakarta’s Gubernatorial Election; A Political Challenge of Identity against Democracy in IndonesiaThis research attempts to investigate an intermingled relationship of political interest and religious issues, particularly in the Jakarta's Gubernatorial Issues in 2017. Basuki Tjahaya Purnama or Ahok, one of the governor candidate and also the former governor was accused of blasphemy issues after his speech in the Pramuka Island becomes viral. Although this case ended with a court, which ruled that he was guilty and received a sentence of 2 years in prison, this has become an unforgettable fact of Indonesian democracy. The proposed inquiry is how far religious issues influence political tension for based non-religion countries such as Indonesia. By using approach of hate Spin, within the combination of hate speech (vilification or offense-giving) and indignation of the offense-taking framework, this paper focuses on the entanglements of a political campaign and religious issues in the election period. This issue is significant for the reason that the tension of religious and p...

The 2019 election Indonesia can arguably be seen as an intriguing election. Not only is it due to the virulent claim contestation between the presidential candidates' camps-Jokowi's and Prabowo's-especially towards the contested versions of the election results based on the real count (the process has not met its end result) and the quick count (Jokowi's votes outnumbered Prabowo), but that the contestation itself represents the long-drawn-out contention that stemmed from the synthesis as well as cleavage of discursive ideological political strands of Nationalist/Islamic(/-st?). The smear campaign regarding politics of identity (questioning their Islamic credentials, leadership capability and political platforms) propagated by both camps has perennially circulated and proliferated not only since the 2014 Presidential election, but that it also accumulated since the 2012 Gubernatorial election of DKI province. The latter contested the obscure synthesis and/versus polarization of Nationalist/Islamic(-st?) strands represented by the incumbent, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Sino-Indonesian Christian DKI's former Governor, Jokowi's Vice Governor) versus Anies baswedan (Indonesian Yemen Descent, Jokowi's former Minister of Education and Culture). The aforementioned phenomenon foregrounds the presidential candidates' billboard advertisements. This paper investigates the scopes the presidential candidates' billboards represent the symbolic identity smear campaign in Indonesia's post-truth era, deploying social semiotic and language evaluation theories. The preliminary finding demonstrates that from the six billboards investigated (two billboards represent each campdeploying stratified purposeful sampling), both written and visual texts of the presidential candidates' billboards not only represent the discursive contestation of Nationalist/Islamic(/-st?) strands, but that they also reflect the relativization of each camp's beliefs through the supremacy of softening messages aiming at shortcircuiting the voters' critical, analytical senses (in this case in the form of textual contradiction) in Indonesia's post-truth era.

Contesting Ethnic and Religious Identities in the 2019 Indonesian Elections: Political Polarization in West KalimantanDuring Indonesia’s 2019 presidential election, significant religious and ethnic contestations occurred using hatred and stigma in expressing support for favored candidates. This article focuses on the case of West Kalimantan Province which has a divided society and memories of ethnic-based bloody communal violence in the early 2000s. This article notifies that wherein ethnic Dayak, Javanese, and Chinese voters tended to support Joko Widodo (Jokowi)-Ma’ruf Amin, while ethnic Malay, Madurese, and Buginese voters tended to back Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno up in the election. However, such ethnic and religious contestations in West Kalimantan did not generate violent conflicts during the election. Instead, voters continued to interact peacefully and harmoniously among different ethnic and religious groups. This contestation coincided with the emergence of political awareness among the Dayaks, Chinese, and Malays of West Kalimantan, which further contributed to Jokowi’s electoral vict...

Jokowi's Populism in the 2012 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election2014 •
Joko Widodo's victory in the 2012 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election could be seen as a populist phenomenon. An outsider to Jakarta politics, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) beat the incumbent, Fauzi Bowo (Foke), who had received strong support from political parties. Using populism as an analytical tool, this paper argues that the following four factors enabled Jokowi to emerge as an alternative leader in Indonesia's capital: (1) social breakdown and declining capability of the government; (2) corrupt, draining political traditions and a negative image of political parties; (3) societal changes; and (4) the emergence of forms of political representation outside of traditional political institutions. Those situations led Jakarta voters to more easily accept Jokowi's offer – “New Jakarta” ( Jakarta Baru) – as a new identity against the established regime. Populism can help explain Jokowi's victory in the election, but also the leadership of his administration after he was elected.
